Nike’s Bizarre, Experimental Mind-Body-Connection Footwear

Within the Nike Sport Research Lab is a new division: The Mind Science Department, whose purpose is “deepening Nike’s understanding of the mind-body connection.” This division employs actual neuroscientists who use both brain and body imaging to “study the nervous system, brain activity and cognition of athletes in motion — leading to unique insights informing a completely new category of products and services to help athletes better prepare, train, compete and recover.”

Their studies have yielded the Nike Mind, a line of footwear with foam spheres on the bottom.

As you walk you can feel these spheres on the undersides of your feet, through the sole.

While that seems it might be annoying, those sensations are actually the point:

“Scientifically shown to activate key sensory areas of the brain via underfoot stimulation, the Nike Mind 001 mule and Mind 002 sneaker deepen an athlete’s awareness, helping ground them in their bodies and bring them back to the present moment.”

“The Mind 001 and Mind 002 feature 22 independent foam nodes per shoe that are bonded to a flexible, water-resistant material that allows them to act as pistons and gimbals as athletes move — imparting the feeling, and even the texture, of the ground directly beneath. This interaction heightens sensory awareness, which can help clear away distractions and enhance concentration.”

The Mind 001 is the slip-on you see in the photos; the Mind 002 is the actual sneaker.

Breakthrough, or hooey? We’ll have to wait for user reviews, which should come next year. Both Mind models will be released in January.

Decades of physical product development now intersect with cloud connectivity, AI, and advanced computing, marking a shift in the way we design hardware. In the past, devices like Sony Handycams or Casio organizers stood on their own, disconnected and limited in their scope. Today, a fusion of intelligence and context powered by IoT, powerful chipsets and machine learning models are accelerating innovation at scale.

This moment is about speed, not just of computing, but of experimentation and iteration. AI allows us to compress what once took six months into six days. At Fluke, during the discovery phase, we’re using tools like Enzzo to quickly mine customer insights, build personas, model value propositions, and simulate bill-of-materials, at pace. That acceleration allows us to play faster, test ideas more rapidly, and refine more precisely.

When we move into the delivery phase, AI helps bridge the historically conflicting models of hardware’s waterfall approach and software’s agile processes. From prototyping to firmware to rendering, AI-driven tools enable faster iteration across physical and digital boundaries. Then comes the sustain phase, where products are in-market and generating data. AI is changing how we ask questions about usage, performance, and customer behavior. No longer limited by dashboards or SQL skills, teams can now pose natural language queries and get answers in seconds. That’s a revolution in operational intelligence, and a lever for continuous improvement.

However, what makes this generation of technology different from past shifts is not just power or capability, it’s usability. With natural language interfaces, you no longer need to write code to be productive; you just need curiosity. That radically lowers the barrier to adoption, speeding up learning curves across entire organizations.

But speed isn’t without risk. We take that trade-off seriously at Fluke, where safety and precision are paramount. There’s a line we won’t cross with generative AI. While we’re happy to use it for product recommendations or visual renderings, we never deploy it where safety or compliance is on the line. There is an ethical responsibility tied to innovation, one that pushes barriers but never jeopardizes the intention of designing in the first place. With this at the forefront, our cycle of innovation prioritizes trust and human capacity, keeping a check on AI, its applications, and results.

This is where democratization comes in. For innovation to grow within any organization – there must be increased access to design tools, software, and training across departments. We’ve seen repeatedly that passion and curiosity can trump credentials. The ability to experiment, test, and iterate is innately human. AI enables more people to try, fail, learn, and eventually build meaningful things. That’s how innovation should work.

Hardware has always been difficult; long lead times, complex integrations, and in some cases, expensive mistakes. But AI can help flatten that curve, giving us faster feedback loops and more dynamic product-market fit testing. At the same time, it rebalances the power dynamic between software and hardware. Hardware has been commoditized by software for years. Now, as AI commodifies software, the spotlight turns back to hardware as the irreplaceable interface to human experience.

It’s this that also led me to return to hardware after years in cloud computing. Every interaction, whether with a device, a tool, or a service, ends in the physical world. You can’t feel, touch, or experience software without hardware. The magic happens at that intersection.

Still, trust doesn’t happen overnight. It’s our job to educate and show the art of the possible with AI, so we host AI demo days, lunch-and-learns, and summit events to expose our teams to different use cases. More importantly, we explore what’s possible when you can use AI responsibly in an environment where you are free to try and test, before scaling. [GM2]

Ultimately, this is about responsible acceleration. By giving people the tools and guidance, we can create environments where people are free to explore without setting them up to fail.

AI is still in its infancy, but its learning curve is exponential. Our responsibility is to guide it carefully, while it’s still learning to walk, as one day we’ll need to trust it to run.

Dephy’s Bionic Footwear is Being Adapted Into Nike Powered Sneakers

This ExoBoot was created by Dephy, a robotics company spun off from the MIT Media Lab.

Originally developed for (and currently being tested by) the U.S. military, the ExoBoot is a powered ankle exoskeleton that lowers the metabolic energy required to walk. Soldiers can march further without requiring extra calories.

Dephy has also expanded into the civilian sector, running trials with rehabilitation clinics and mobility research groups. Older adults and people with disabilities are the target market.

Now a third market has emerged: Athletes, thanks to a tie-up with Nike called Project Amplify.

For an athlete to use a powered sneaker might sound like cheating, but Nike begs to differ. “Akin to how electric bikes have made it easier to ride farther and more frequently, revolutionizing urban commuting,” the sneaker giant writes, “Nike is developing Project Amplify to make slower running, jogging and walking easier and more fun, with a focus on athletes running between a 10- and 12-minute mile pace.”

The Nike-ized ExoBoot “isn’t designed for competitive, faster runners trying to shave seconds off their time,” the company explains. “Rather, it’s intended to serve athletes who want to go faster and farther with less effort by giving them more power for everyday movement — in effect, a second set of calf muscles.” In their testing, they report that users “have shared that the system feels like it’s part of their body and that it makes walking or running uphill feel like moving on flat ground.”

Nike says their ultimate plan, once testing is completed, is to release Project Amplify “to a broad consumer launch in the coming years.”

fisherman’s shelter becomes a meditative retreat in façade’s renovation on milos island

Façade revives the spirit of the sirma on Milos

 

In the coastal landscape of Milos, Façade studio’s Siridi transforms a traditional fisherman’s shelter, known locally as a sirma, into a meditative space. The project engages the vernacular architecture of the Cyclades with quiet sensitivity, preserving the carved rock form of the shelter while introducing minimal interventions.

 

Sirmas, the brightly painted boat shelters that dot the coastline of the Greek island, once served as winter refuges for fishermen and their vessels. Carved partly into the rock, their rear portions formed natural caves, while their constructed facades opened directly to the sea. Over time, many were converted into living spaces, their utilitarian origins softened by domestic life. In Siridi, Façade returns to this duality between protection and exposure using the sirma’s anatomy to explore how traditional Cycladic architecture can be redefined through contemporary means without losing its essence.

The Greek architects describe the Siridi project as ‘living in the in-between.’ Guided by the etymology of sirma, derived from the Greek word for ‘to drag’ or ‘to pull’, the intervention celebrates the motion and temporality embedded in these dwellings. 

 

Façade honors each element, maintaining the integrity of the original form. The sleeping area remains carved into the rock, the rough stone left visible beneath a veil of white limewash.  Near the entrance, the kitchen and shower mark the rhythm of summer life, connecting the acts of bathing, cooking, and gathering to the landscape beyond. Light filters through the narrow openings, tracing the passage of the day across stone surfaces that hold the memory of salt and wind.

 

A single movable object, a long wooden table that slides along the length of the space, recalls the motion of the boat once pulled ashore. Its mobility allows it to shift roles throughout the day, becoming a work surface, a dining table, or a resting point. Painted in the same shade of blue as the sirma’s door, the table mirrors the boat’s presence, maintaining a symbolic link to the fisherman’s craft.

Behind the kitchen, a delicate stainless-steel grid defines the auxiliary spaces, echoing the fisherman’s metallic net, known locally as siridi. This mesh-like partition allows air and light to move freely while delineating zones. 

 

Externally, the facade remains almost untouched. The wooden blue door, a recurring motif across the fishing villages of the Milos island is preserved, embodying the continuity of Cycladic vernacular and serving as a reminder of the sirma’s origins. Façade resists the pressures of touristic transformation that have reshaped many island dwellings, instead proposing a model of adaptive reuse.

Studio DERA Transforms former Swimming Pool into Learning Hub

 

Studio DERA has repurposed a former school swimming pool into a sustainable multi-purpose learning and wellbeing space for Waltham Forest College in London. With the college rapidly expanding its student body, finding new ways to accommodate educational and extracurricular needs was a priority. Studio DERA had already run a sustainable materials workshop for WFC students, while building a hempcrete and timber community center and nursery in nearby Higham Hill. College Principal & CEO Janet Gardner, invited Studio DERA directors Max Dewdney and Marcel Rahm to reimagine the long disused swimming pool site and do a feasibility study. The architects decided that retrofitting the original structure and utilising natural materials was the most sustainable and efficient way to transform the space into an attractive and inspiring hub for students and staff. A RIBA Stage 2 Report and a strong design narrative that aligned with the college’s estate strategy resulted in a successful funding bid to the Department for Education.

 

From the outset, Studio DERA’s work was shaped by ongoing consultations with educators, curriculum leaders, facilities managers, and students. The architects ran a series of workshops and engagement sessions to test spatial strategies, technical requirements, and user priorities. This informed key elements of the final design, including the subdivision of the Pool into zones, the use of biophilic and acoustic elements, and the inclusion of a stage and IT suite. Balancing architectural ambition with operational need, Studio DERA worked closely with the college to coordinate infrastructure upgrades and ensure long-term adaptability and maintainability with the installation of a new renewable energy system. The project was completed in 48 weeks, but fine-tuning continues post-completion, based on real-time user feedback from students and staff. The result is a versatile, welcoming, and light-filled space of 994 sqm.

Light, Material, and Adaptability Anchor Pool’s Adaptive Redesign

 

The Pool has five learning zones, each tailored to support a range of teaching styles and group sizes. A raised stage positioned at the former pool’s deep end creates a focal point for lectures, performances, and assemblies. Beneath it, a new IT room cleverly uses the original pool depth to deliver a high-performance digital learning infrastructure. The original high-level windows were cut down to the external floor level, dramatically increasing the natural light. Studio DERA installed integrated window seating along the old pool concourse, and fixed desks around the perimeter of the former pool tank for study and small group work. To increase thermal performance to meet DfE standards, triple-glazed windows were installed, along with insulation of both external and internal walls, and new insulated pipework. Operational energy use is expected to fall significantly thanks to air source heat pumps, mixed-mode ventilation, and LED lighting.

 

Material choices were guided by principles of low embodied carbon, durability, and circularity, and include FSC-certified timber, recycled acoustic panels, and low-VOC finishes. ‘We wanted the Pool to be an inspiring and practical space that elevates student learning and staff functionality, and, above all, brings joy. We were really keen to show just what is architecturally possible in the education sector, which is so often sadly under-funded and under-prioritized. Janet Gardner at Waltham Forest College was a visionary leader for this project, and together with our great contractors, we’ve delivered an ambitious, design-led and sustainable hub which puts the user experience front and center,’ shares Max Dewdney, Studio DERA’s director architect.

The modern concept Škoda 1000 MBX car comes with foldable cinema-style seats that allow users to fit their bike, gears, and luggage in the passenger seat. A modern twist from the automobile’s interior designer, David Stingl, the 2+2 seating setup in the cabin makes the space inside flexible. The front seats can merge and become a bench, so there’s nothing hindering between the driver and the front passenger, while the riders at the back can feel as if they were in a theater with the cinema-style tip-up chairs. The upgraded Škoda 1000 MBX car can then easily transform from a two-seater coupe into a cargo vehicle without adding or removing anything from the ride.

 

David Stingl explains that when the rear seats are folded upwards, there’s sufficient space for luggage, or even a bicycle or other sports equipment. ‘The concept car even features air suspension, allowing the ground clearance to be adjusted: low for a sporty stance or high for tackling rough paths and easier cargo loading,’ he adds. If the passengers look around, they can notice that the side panels at the door have plus and minus buttons. When pressed, the windows ascend and descend, a design element that steers away from the typical push button.

Still inside the Škoda 1000 MBX car, the dashboard comes with a glass-covered oval module into which images are projected, courtesy of the interior designer David Stingl. The oval shape appears throughout the cabin, from the steering wheel to the headrests. It is a direct reference to the company’s original sedan, 1000 MB, which was produced briefly in the 1960s. In the upgraded one, the central console is still absent, but the chrome accents, which were alive in the original model, now come through as clean graphics highlighted by ambient lighting. The silhouettes inside the vehicle are reminiscent of the sharp lines found in brutalist architecture.

 

That is, in fact, an influential visual element for the design team, more visible on the exterior designed by Antti Mikael Savio. Here, the designer admits to studying several buildings and objects in that style and incorporating it whenever he can. The vehicle subtly nods at some of the features from the previous model, including the raised headlamps above the bonnet line, the character crease along the flanks halfway up the sides, and the distinctive C-pillar treatment. The rear seat, however, has no windows to make extra cargo space and give the vehicle a sportier and more compact look. Instead of a window, there’s a rearview camera replacing it.

A brief design recap of the 1960s Škoda 1000 MB

 

Revisiting the 1960s Škoda 1000 MB, the sedan that the designers based their Škoda 1000 MBX car on, was the first Škoda car with a self-supporting body and a new aluminum engine block made by pressure casting. The two-door version, called the 1000 MBX, started production in 1966 and had frameless doors and no B-pillar, which gave the vehicle a more open look. In 1968, Škoda released another model, the 1100 MBX, with a 1,107-cc engine producing 52 horsepower. Production was small, with only a few cars built each day. In total, Škoda made 2,517 units before production ended in 1969, making the 1000 MBX and especially the 1100 MBX version rare to find.

 

Fast forward to today, Škoda designers Antti Mikael Savio (exterior) and David Stingl (interior) create a modern and conceptual version of the Škoda 1000 MBX car. It forms part of a series called Icons Get a Makeover, where Škoda designers reimagine classic cars from the company’s history. It is a collection of design studies that are not meant for production, and for the 1000 MBX model, the designers worked on it for about a month: Antti focused on the exterior, starting with sketches made on paper, while David worked on the digital 3D model, shaping the car’s inside first and then adding details to the overall structure. The resulting concept car has the look of a modern crossover, combining a strong structure with usable space. Antti wanted the new version to look sporty but still friendly, while David focused on keeping the car’s original meaning: a stylish, functional car for everyday life.
