One such mobile and responsive surveillance solution is GARDI, a drone-type autonomous patrol robot concept. This project aims to present a novel approach to enhancing security in areas lacking adequate surveillance. It is designed to operate autonomously, utilizing existing streetlight infrastructure as docking and charging stations. This integration allows for continuous operation without the need for extensive new installations. Minimal smartwatch concept challenges wearable design status quo

Although it took some time, smartwatches have finally found their true calling as health-centric wearables that also provide access to voice-activated AI assistants. But while the technologies inside them have advanced through the years, their external designs seem to have stagnated. They’re all beginning to look the same and, for better or worse, are stumbling over trying to look like regular watches.

Smartwatches still need to be able to tell the time, of course, but there’s no requirement that they should have those classic circular or square designs. That might appeal to some people, but even the analog and digital watch markets are teeming with unconventional shapes and appearances. This smartwatch concept tries to think outside the box by delivering a minimal design that only focuses on the essential experiences.

Smartwatches adopted traditional watch designs back in the day when people felt unfamiliar and uncomfortable with the idea of miniature smartphones on their wrists. Today, everyone knows what a smartwatch is and its features, and few of those benefits actually have anything to do with telling the time. And if you consider some of the more eccentric and more expensive watch designs in the market, you’ll realize it might also be time for smartwatches to outgrow their roots.

The Minimal Watch Concept distills the design of the smartwatch down to its most basic features, with time actually taking only a secondary role. Instead of a full circular display, it has four separate displays spread in a cross-shaped arrangement. Each of the displays has a distinct role to play, and only the top circular screen actually tells the time in a speedometer-like representation.

The middle row, composed of circular and wider pill-shaped screens, is the main area that shows the current action or activity running. The larger screen displays content like messages, alarms, tasks, or caller IDs, while the circular screen beside it shows related information such as the activity icon, the caller’s photo or avatar, and more. The bottom circle display can display other information or actions, whether they’re related to the current activity, such as an icon for accepting or ending calls, the current temperature, or a record button.

Admittedly, such a minimal design actually complicates the implementation by splitting a single display into four screens. Such changes could have consequences for battery life, software complexity, and user experience. At the same time, however, it also reduces the potential for distractions or unnecessary apps by limiting the usable space. At the very least, the Minimal Watch Concept dares to imagine a design that eschews tradition and explores new ways to interact with wearable devices.

3D-printed coral reefs can help protect coastline

I find it so ridiculous that there are still people who don’t believe in climate change. The effect on our environment has been so obvious the past few decades. We’re seeing so many unnatural weather conditions as well as the devastating impact it has had on natural coral reefs and vulnerable coastlines. This and natural disasters have affected the life and livelihood of people who live in areas near water.

Miami is taking an innovative approach to combat climate change and protect its coastline: 3D-printed coral reefs. These artificial reefs are not just aesthetically interesting; they serve a crucial purpose in creating micro environments for marine life and acting as natural seawalls. The initiative, called the BIOCAP project, recognizes the significant threat climate change poses to natural coral reefs through rising sea temperatures and ocean acidification. These factors lead to coral bleaching and the degradation of vital marine ecosystems. To counter this, Florida International University (FIU) researchers led by Sara Pezeshk and Shahin Vassigh are designing and deploying intricate 3D-printed structures that mimic the complexity of natural reefs.

These artificial reefs are created using environmentally friendly materials and are carefully designed to provide the nooks and crannies that various marine species need for shelter, feeding, and reproduction. Digital calendar uses spiral form to show passage of time

Most people probably don’t have calendars in their homes since you can just look at your phone or your digital calendar to check out what day it is. I still prefer to have something you can look quickly at a glance and I also have several planners so that’s not really a problem for me. But what if you had something that not only just tells you the date but will also make you reflect on the passage of time and how the days flow? Jaekeun Lee’s Spiral Timepiece reimagines the conventional calendar, presenting a poetic and multidimensional perspective on time.

As the inaugural piece in his ongoing project Provisional Tempo, this 12-month digital calendar replaces linear grids with a dynamic spiral of Earth-like globes, each representing a month in a continuous, evolving cycle. Rather than depicting time as a straight line or a closed loop, the Spiral Timepiece adopts a spiral form that allows for both return and change. Each month is represented by a rendered image of Earth-like beads arranged along a spiral curve. The form suggests cyclical motion, but subtle variations in spacing, lighting, and elevation reflect the idea that no moment is simply repeated. In this work, time is not measured in fixed units, but traced through movement, difference, and atmosphere.

The Spiral Timepiece features 3D-rendered compositions constructed from both procedural modeling and photographic textures. Particularly, Jaekeun Lee has derived Earth and cloud visuals from NASA’s Blue Marble dataset, with month-specific versions applied individually to each globe.

Arranged in a spiral that progresses clockwise, the entire structure rotates slightly each month around its central axis. A gravitational gradient runs through, depicted by increasing curvature and compression toward the center, where orbits tighten, and mass appears to intensify. The designer has also randomized the rotational axis of each globe, introducing variation within the overall continuity of the system.

The Earth-like beads appear in three variations: one version includes the year along the equator and the month number at the poles; another uses nighttime satellite imagery to mark January 1st and all Sundays as holidays; the third represents regular weekdays. These variants are distributed across the spiral according to their temporal function.

It operates not as surface ornament but as an underlying structure, inviting us to reimagine time, not as a straight line to be followed, but as a rhythm unfolding in recurring motion, with difference. It departs from the linear directionality that presumes a defined beginning and end, and from the closed loop that assumes static repetition. The spiral instead allows for a layered temporality, one that revisits familiar points without returning to the same state.

The Spiral Timepiece is available as a high-resolution digital download (3840×2160) through Lee’s website, Provisional Tempo. Each year, at the end of December, the Spiral Timepiece is updated and made available as a downloadable set of high-resolution images through the project’s website.

Penang’s Iconic Backward Trishaw Gets a Brilliant LEGO Makeover

Long before Grab rides and GPS directions, getting around in parts of Southeast Asia meant relying on human muscle and mechanical poetry. In Penang, that poetry rolled down the cobbled streets of George Town in the form of the trishaw, a three-wheeled chariot that was less about speed and more about spectacle. With the driver perched behind the passenger, pedaling like a stagehand moving the lead actor across a set, these vibrant vehicles blurred the lines between transport, craft, and theater.

Their lineage traces back to 19th-century Japan, where the jinrikisha – literally “human-powered vehicle” – first emerged. Designed by Izumi Yosuke around 1869, it was a utilitarian marvel born out of necessity and swiftly adopted across Asia. When this mode of transport made its way to Malaysia, it evolved with local flair. Penang’s version added canopies, floral decorations, and a peculiar but charming reverse layout where the passenger faces backwards, getting a clear view of the city rather than of the rider. An addition of a third wheel turned the jinrikisha into a trike, replacing the hand-pulling operation with simple pedalling. As cars and scooters took over, trishaws faded from daily life, becoming nostalgic footnotes or tourist novelties… but now, a LEGO builder is turning them into a gorgeous brick-based collectible.

The trishaw’s gradual descent into obsolescence is precisely why WYCreation’s LEGO Penang Trishaw build feels so necessary. It doesn’t just document a cultural icon – it reconstructs it in 1,000 meticulously selected bricks, scaled to a commanding 1:8 model measuring 42cm long, 24cm wide, and 27cm tall. It’s bulky in all the right ways, capturing the vehicle’s ornamental charm and structural oddities with uncanny finesse. The curved canopy is especially arresting, made even more expressive by a bold reinterpretation: a LEGO flower used as its umbrella that acts as decor, a symbol of the trishaw, as well as a sun and rain-guard for the rider.

Technically, this wasn’t an easy one. Trishaws, with their sloping profiles and offset balance, aren’t friendly to LEGO’s rectangular system. WYCreation spent weeks iterating designs, especially the wheel assembly, a notoriously difficult challenge due to its thin profile and structural integrity. Drawing inspiration from LEGO designer Đặng Hoàng, who previously used similar techniques in his own MOCs, the wheels here strike a rare balance between fragility and fidelity.

What makes the build special isn’t just the execution, though. It’s the way it preserves atmosphere. From the flared fenders to the slightly tilted passenger seat, every element echoes a larger story, the kind you can almost hear through the rhythmic ring of a brass bell and the creak of aging pedals on asphalt. You’re not looking at a LEGO model. You’re seeing a street scene from 1970s Penang, filtered through brickwork.

The Penang Trishaw is currently a submission on the LEGO Ideas forum – an online community where LEGO builders make and share their own creations, as well as vote for their favorites.
