Hisense Just Built a Home Theater Projector That Geeks Will Love

They don’t really make living room projectors for the kind of people who keep colorimeters in their drawers and argue about Rec.709 vs. BT.2020 on forums at 2 AM. But sometimes, a company gets just close enough to that sweet spot between nerd appeal and mass-market polish. That’s where the Hisense Vidda C3 Pro lands – quietly confident, technically sharp, and, frankly, way more interesting than its price tag suggests.

It’s built on Hisense’s Trichroma laser tech, the same color-obsessed light engine that’s been creeping its way into the brand’s higher-end displays. With a peak brightness of 2,800 CVIA lumens, it’s not trying to scorch your retinas, but it does hit the kind of real-world visibility that makes HDR worthwhile in actual living spaces. Sure, CVIA isn’t ANSI, and Hisense still doesn’t provide that translation. But this is China’s homegrown measurement, and within that context, the number tracks. It’s bright, just not stadium-bright.

Color is where it gets less ambiguous. 110% of the BT.2020 color gamut coverage is a flex, on paper, at least. The projector supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, IMAX Enhanced, and Filmmaker Mode, which is more about decoding credentials than transformative difference in image quality. Still, having all those options baked into a sub-$1,400 unit (¥9,499 in China) is nothing to shrug at, especially for anyone streaming high-quality content from platforms that actually support those standards.

Throw ratio sits between 0.9:1 and 1.5:1, which basically means you can throw a 100-inch image from just over six feet away. Not ultra-short throw, but definitely apartment-friendly. The 1.67x zoom range is lossless and optical, so resizing your image won’t cost you resolution – something cheaper models fudge with digital scaling. There’s also automatic keystone, focus, and even object avoidance via onboard sensors. That last one sounds excessive until you trip over a toy car mid-setup and realize maybe the projector’s smarter than you.

JBL’s audio partnership is a decent value-add, if not a game-changer. Two 10W drivers are fine for casual use, but nobody building a legit home theater setup is stopping at built-in speakers. That said, the inclusion of HDMI 2.1 with eARC is crucial. It gives you a proper audio pipeline for higher-end soundbars or AVRs, so you’re not stuck with compressed junk over Bluetooth.

Speaking of which, this thing supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. That’s overkill today, but it future-proofs a device that might stay in your living room for 5+ years. Unlike most projector brands that feel like they’re just catching up, Hisense seems to be playing with next-gen tools before they’re trendy.

Hisense isn’t a newcomer to this industry. It’s a laser-centric powerhouse that’s been aggressively iterating, especially in the Chinese market. The C3 Pro sits just below the C3 Ultra, which boasts a beefier 3,200 CVIA lumens spec. But unless you’re projecting during solar flares, the Pro’s brightness will suffice. Compared to other 4K laser contenders like the Xgimi RS 20 Ultra Max or the JMGO N1 Ultra, the Vidda C3 Pro holds its own, particularly in color accuracy and software maturity.

At CNY 9,499 (~$1,318), the C3 Pro punches above its price class. U.S. consumers might be tempted by the older C2 Pro at nearly $2,000, but the smarter move is to wait and hope the C3 Pro makes its way west. Hisense has a pattern of testingthe  waters at home before releasing globally.

Mammoth Overland hardshell SKL is a rugged rooftop camper with its own power station

U.S.-based Mammoth Overland has a very uncanny manner of naming its high-end off-road camper trailers. WLY, ELE, and now SKL! The contracted names may seem silly, but the potential of these trailers is second to none in the industry. Having built trailers that are compact and off-road capable, the company (through consumer feedback and sales) has realized the drawback of these mobile camping solutions: After use, they require storage space in the garage. Not everyone has the room for storage at home, which is one of the deterrents for people to embrace the lifestyle.

On showcase at the 2025 Overland Expo West, the concept of rooftop camper SKL (Skull) is potentially what Mammoth Overland is realizing as an answer to the problem of storage it confronts. Built entirely from aluminum, without any soft, canvas parts, this rooftop shelter is specially designed for people who lack the ample storage space for a trailer, but want to rejoice the benefits nonetheless.

Constructed to replicate the convenience and comfort of a trailer in a confined living solution on the rooftop, the SKL has solid walls that fold out and back in origami style. It’s entirely different from the traditional rooftop tents made from soft materials or a combination of hard and soft material. Owing to its solid, aluminum construction, the Mammoth Overland SKL has an insulated shell (it has an R5 insulation rating) and a complete onboard power system for all-season camping.

The conviction with which the SKL is conceptualized, you may be forgiven for not knowing that this is perhaps only the rooftop campers from the company. It offers the compactness and convenience of a rooftop tent, while its ideology is borrowed from the rugged trailers the American manufacturer has been perfecting for years. It gathers what the Mammoth Overland customers love the most about their trailers and moves it up to the top of the roof, making the 89 inches long, 59 inches wide, and 18 inches tall SKL a livable portable power station.

The sizable space on the inside of the rooftop camper can accommodate a full-size bed to sleep two adults comfortably. It has LED lights inside, a roof-mounted electric fan above the bed, and auxiliary flood lights on the outside to light up the campsite or the tailgate party. All of these are powered by the onboard battery pack, which is supplied its juice by the solar panels on the rooftop. The space within the SKL is naturally well lit and airy, thanks to the porthole windows and side panels which hinge outwards to allow in air on a hot afternoon. With a payload capacity of 500 pounds, the SKL can let you carry your bikes and kayaks along, if you may. Mammoth Overland is targeting to release the production model of the SKL later this year, some changes to the final version are likely from the concept displayed at the Overland Expo West.

Microsoft has embraced a more organic design language here. Gone are the sharper edges of previous generations, replaced by gently rounded corners that echo the aesthetic of modern tablets. The bezels have shrunk considerably, though they’re still present enough to provide a comfortable grip without triggering accidental touches. The overall effect is subtle but significant. This feels less like a business tool and more like a personal device.

The color options deserve special mention. Beyond the standard Platinum, Microsoft offers Ocean (a sophisticated blue-gray) and Violet. These aren’t the bold, saturated hues you might expect from consumer electronics, but rather subdued, mature tones that manage to feel both professional and personal. Perhaps the most significant ergonomic improvement involves the Surface Slim Pen. Rather than attaching to the keyboard as in previous models, it now magnetically snaps to the back of the tablet itself. The connection is surprisingly strong. You can shake the tablet vigorously without dislodging the pen. This redesign serves multiple purposes: it keeps the pen accessible whether you’re using the keyboard or not, it allows for wireless charging of the pen, and it slightly reduces the keyboard’s footprint.

You get up to 8 hours of continuous playback on a single charge while you get up to 10 meters of efficient wireless connection. If you’re watching videos or gaming, you get a reported latency of 55ms so you get seamless synchronization between audio and visuals. It has an IPX4 waterproof rating so if you’re using it while working out, it protects it from splashes and sweat.

8BitDo Arcade Controller, perfect for fighting games, takes joystick out of the equation

8BitDo brought the gaming world the arcade appeal in the form of retro-modern controllers. Their first ever Arcade Stick customizable gamepad for PvP game fanatics on Switch and PC, and then later on for the Xbox consoles released on the same day as the Street Fighter VI launch, are the prime examples. Now, the Hong Kong-based peripheral maker has launched the Arcade Controller, which is a hit-box style controller to quench your thirst for fighting games.

This time around, the retro-modern controller comes in two variants – one for Switch and PC gamers, and the other an officially Xbox-licensed peripheral in black and green. The Arcade Controller comes with USB-C wired mode and wireless mode for connection with the Switch. The gamepad is a true hit-box entertainer with no joystick and is perfect for gamers like me who love to have the precision control that directional buttons provide. The makers have kept the profile slim at 1.6 cm, which is just 1mm more than the MacBook Pro.

Customization is at the core of this leverless controller with a dynamic dial button that swaps the layout. That means you can toggle the S-input mode for the Switch and PC’s X-input mode, which automatically changes the illuminated labels. If you look closely, the bean-shaped buttons labelled P1 to P4 can be hot-swapped (lie-flat alternatives also available) to your liking. The gamepad arrives as a competitor for the Razer Kitsune, which is more than triple the price of this peripheral. The 8BitDo’s button controller punches way above its weight with an impressive 20-hour wireless battery life for the normal variants, and 40 hours with the lighting off on the Xbox version. When you are on the go or don’t have the wired option handy, this controller can easily edge out two days of gameplay. Toggling between the various connected devices, the volume levels, or a button to prevent accidental touches, is a breeze with the control panel on the top section.

The gamepad has 16 buttons in total, employing Kailh Wizard low-profile mechanical switches. It is primarily designed for fighting titles like Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter that require lightning-fast reaction time to hit the buttons. This gives them a slight advantage against players who choose the joystick controller. That said, the controller won’t be the first option for playing multiplayer FPS games, given the flat plane of buttons for inputting various on-screen moves in a 3D world. Obviously, the wired mode on the Arcade Controller will be preferred by most gamers for its zero latency, compared to the wireless option, which will still have a slight delay.

The Xbox version comes with an adjustable RGB lighting option with a subtle glow underneath the keys. To get the arcade-style minimalist approach going, the other variants don’t come with this option. The Arcade Controller is priced at $90, and the Xbox version costs $100, given its larger battery and the cool RGB lighting. The official release of the controller is slated for July 15, and it can be pre-ordered right now.

The Expo aims to unite people and ideas from around the world to tackle pressing global challenges. Spanning six months from April 13 to October 13, 2025, the Expo is expected to welcome around 28 million visitors from across the globe. In this spirit of innovation, several pavilions are pushing the boundaries of sustainable design and creativity, reimagining how architecture and technology can serve the planet. From plant-covered structures to recycled materials and carbon-neutral designs, here are the standout pavilions leading the charge towards a greener future.

The Grand Ring

The Grand Ring is a gridded wooden structure encircling the Expo, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest wooden architectural structure, covering 61,035 square metres. This 2-kilometer ring on Yumeshima island blends traditional Japanese joinery, such as nuki joints, with modern engineering. Reflecting the Expo’s theme, “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” it embodies “Diversity in Unity.”

With an inner diameter of 615 meters, an outer diameter of 675 meters, and heights ranging from 12 to 20 meters, it seamlessly merges cultural heritage with innovation. Designed with sustainability in mind, the modular structure can be dismantled, repurposed, or preserved after the Expo to minimize waste.

France Pavilion

The France Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka is guided by the theme “A Hymn to Love,” offering a sensory journey that engages all five senses. Its sleek, modern façade, facing the Expo’s main entrance, resembles an open theatre stage, inviting visitors to explore freely. The side façades are fully screened, and every space reinforces the Pavilion’s core message.

Sustainability is central to the design, with the plant-covered roof, visible from the surrounding Grand Ring, creating a natural microclimate, improving rainwater management, and helping reduce the urban heat island effect. Built with a focus on low environmental impact, the Pavilion showcases how architecture and nature can work together for a more sustainable future.

German Pavilion

The German Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, “Wa! Germany,” highlights sustainability, smart design, and the circular economy. Built entirely from reusable materials, the LAVA Architects-designed pavilion features six round exhibition spaces with green roofs, using 132 tonnes of steel and 140 tonnes of wood for easy disassembly and future use.

Eco-friendly materials like fungal mycelia, loam, and hempcrete add to its sustainable character. Through four exhibition areas and a rooftop garden, visitors are invited to experience and actively engage with ideas of circular living and innovative climate-conscious design.

Netherlands Pavilion

The Netherlands Pavilion at Expo 2025, themed “Common Ground: Creating a New Dawn Together,” is an open and inclusive space that encourages connection, collaboration, and innovation. Designed by RAU Architects, its circular structure features a striking “man-made sun,” symbolizing a hopeful future powered by clean, accessible energy.

The pavilion is fully circular and acts as a material bank, with all building components registered in Madaster—a digital platform that tracks and documents materials for future reuse, making it a sustainable structure. Showcasing eco-friendly technologies, including water-based energy solutions, it highlights how smart design can tackle climate change, food security, and global health.

Philippines Pavilion

The Philippines’ Woven pavilion, designed by Carlo Calma Consultancy Inc. with Cat Inc., highlights sustainability through tradition and innovation. Inspired by Filipino weaving, the pavilion uses over 1,000 rattan threads and 212 handwoven panels crafted by local artisans, symbolizing resilience and unity. Emphasizing Nature, Culture & Community, it showcases the country’s mega biodiversity and promotes the transformation of natural and waste materials into sustainable products.

Blending eco-conscious design, sustainable materials like rattan and bamboo, and engaging exhibits, the pavilion honours Filipino creativity and inspires a commitment to protecting the environment for generations to come.

Portugal Pavilion

The Portugal Pavilion at Expo 2025, designed by Kengo Kuma, honors the ocean through sustainable design. Using recycled nets and suspended ropes, the pavilion forms a dynamic, wave-inspired structure that symbolizes Portugal’s strong bond with the sea. The design incorporates natural elements like sunlight and wind, showcasing the country’s commitment to the circular economy and minimizing waste.

With the theme “Ocean, The Blue Dialogue,” the pavilion underscores the ocean’s vital role in sustainability, supporting SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy). It offers an immersive experience that highlights Portugal’s dedication to a sustainable future.

Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Arabia Pavilion at Expo 2025, designed by Foster + Partners, blends cultural storytelling with a strong focus on sustainability. Situated on the Yumeshima waterfront, its design draws inspiration from traditional Saudi urban landscapes, featuring winding streets, a central courtyard, and immersive installations that reflect the Kingdom’s heritage and future vision.

Built with low-carbon materials, energy-efficient lighting, and rooftop solar panels, the pavilion is designed for easy disassembly and reuse—minimising environmental impact. Targeting the highest CASBEE S rating- Japan’s top green building certification, the pavilion will operate at net zero carbon, showcasing Saudi Arabia’s dedication to sustainable innovation and lasting legacy.

Singapore Pavilion

Designed by DP Architects with Kingsmen Exhibits, the Singapore Pavilion is thematically centred around “Where Dreams Take Shape.” The pavilion explores Singapore’s culture, culinary traditions, and innovations for a sustainable future. Shaped as a 17-metre-high Dream Sphere clad in vibrant Dream Discs made from recycled materials, it symbolizes Singapore’s collective spirit and commitment to sustainability. Located on a 900-square-metre plot on Yumeshima Island, the pavilion spans three levels, featuring immersive multimedia art by artists Ashley Yeo, Jerrold Chong, Melissa Tan, and Zul Mahmod.

At the top, the Dream Forest features dense native planting, inspired by ecological restoration and celebrating Singapore-Japan ties. Inspired by Singapore’s nickname, the Little Red Dot, the pavilion invites visitors on a multi-sensory journey of hope, dreams, and positive change.

Swiss Pavilion

The Swiss Pavilion at Expo 2025, themed “From Heidi to High-Tech,” showcases Switzerland’s journey from Alpine traditions to global innovation. Heidi, a well-loved figure in Japan, serves as the mascot, connecting heritage and progress. Designed by Manuel Herz Architekten, NUSSLI, and Bellprat Partner, the pavilion features four lightweight, connected spheres with a membrane structure for sustainable construction.

Inside, five zones — Augmented Human, Life, Planet provide a sensory experience that showcases Switzerland’s creativity, technology, and innovation. A rooftop viewing platform adds a social space. The design aligns with the Expo’s theme, focusing on a sustainable future.

Blue Ocean Dome

The Blue Ocean Dome champions marine conservation through sustainable architecture and innovation. Supporting the Osaka Blue Ocean Vision to eliminate additional marine plastic pollution by 2050, the pavilion features three interconnected domes built with eco-friendly materials.

Dome A uses laminated bamboo, a durable, carbon-sequestering material, and serves as the pavilion’s media hub. Dome B, the largest, is the world’s first structure made entirely of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). Dome C, crafted from recycled paper tubes, offers a fully recyclable space for live broadcasts and interaction. The pavilion highlights ocean conservation, sustainable marine industries, and the urgent need for environmental action to protect future generations.
