Communal bench is also a kinetic installation to foster interaction

Sitting on public benches can sometimes be a tricky situation, depending on what kind of person you are. If you’re naturally an extrovert, you probably wouldn’t mind sharing a bench with a stranger and might even strike up a conversation with that other person. If you’re not that comfortable with social interactions with strangers, you will probably choose to sit somewhere unoccupied by another person. But what if the bench was built to challenge not just how we sit but also how we interact with other people?

In the heart of Einbeck, Germany, a unique public installation is redefining the concept of communal seating. Berlin-based artist Martin Binder’s latest creation, the “Balance Bench,” is more than just a place to rest—it’s a compelling exploration of cooperation, communication, and shared space. At first glance, the Balance Bench appears to be a minimalist piece of furniture, constructed from oak slats atop a sleek, powder-coated steel frame. However, its design deviates from traditional benches by resting on a single central cylinder instead of four legs.

This unique structure means the bench cannot be used alone; it requires at least two people to sit on opposite ends to achieve balance. If one person attempts to sit alone, the bench tips, making it unusable without mutual effort. Well, yes you can still probably use it but you would have to find the balance yourself or be watched by other people as you try to sit on it properly.

The bench’s mechanics compel users to engage with one another, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility. Originally intended for a public art festival in 2021, the project was delayed due to the pandemic’s restrictions. Now, four years later, the installation serves as a poignant reflection on how the pandemic has altered our interactions in public spaces.

Situated in the Garden of Generations in Einbeck, the Balance Bench invites park-goers to engage in a shared experience. Its design challenges individuals to communicate and adjust their positions to achieve balance, transforming a simple act of sitting into an interactive social exercise. The bench accommodates up to eight people along its 4.5-meter length, making it a focal point for community interaction.

Binder’s installation not only provides a functional seating option but also serves as a catalyst for conversation and connection. By integrating principles of cooperation and mutual awareness into its design, the Balance Bench exemplifies how public art can foster community engagement and reflect societal values.

While the unit supports advanced configurations through expansion hubs and bypass systems, those features are outside the scope of this review. The goal here is practical performance with common products, powered directly from the main unit or its optional DC hub.

From prolonged blackout prep to match-day support, the Apex 300 demonstrates the potential of a high-capacity portable power station, especially when paired with a fuel generator, all without leaving the average user behind.

Design & Ergonomics

The Apex 300 has a compact, squared chassis with reinforced edges and no cosmetic finishes. It weighs just under 84 pounds. While the mass is noticeable, it’s not difficult to move. A recessed top handle sits flush and centered for balance. Two side handles are molded into the body, one on each side. This lets you lift using proper form without needing to twist or overcompensate. The handle spacing and weight distribution make it possible to load in and out of a trunk or reposition in tight spaces without tipping. The casing is matte composite. No gloss, no soft-touch. It’s built to resist fire and impact, with corner protection and stiff panels that don’t flex. There’s no padding, no shiny accents. This is a working product for flinching in harsh environments or heavy-duty use, not something designed for display.

The front panel consolidates all standard AC outputs. What stands out most on the front panel is the 120/240V voltage selector—a rare feature in this category. With a simple toggle, the Apex 300 can switch between standard 120V and powerful 240V split-phase output, all from a single unit. There’s no need for dual machines, external inverters, or bulky adapters. Just press the 240V button, and the side port activates 240V output while the front-facing 120V outlets remain fully functional. Even better, it supports simultaneous charging and discharging in both voltage modes, making it one of the most flexible power solutions out there. There are four 120V/20A outlets arranged in a horizontal line. Above the sockets, the integrated digital display shows live system status. Remaining battery is presented both numerically and visually via a segmented arc. Directly below, the estimated charge or runtime is shown in hours and minutes. Along the sides of the screen, AC and DC power input and output are broken down in watts. System icons flank the upper corners, indicating ECO mode, connectivity status, and fan operation. Alerts appear in the lower corners with a flashing indicator. The display is not touch-sensitive, and there are no layered menus. Everything is presented in one view. Visibility holds up in bright conditions without overwhelming in low light.

The left side houses dual cooling vents and serves as a passive intake for airflow. The 120/240V 50A AC input/output port and high-capacity outputs, including the 120V/30A TT-30R and 120V/240V 50A NEMA L14-50R outlets, are well located. The 50A AC input also supports charging from a 120/240V gas generator, making it ideal for extended power outages. These ports are clearly labeled. Rubberized flaps protect these areas. A grounding screw is located near the input ports. Vents positioned near these ports help manage thermal output. During charging or peak load, the integrated fans remain active but quiet, operating at around 40 to 50 dB under standard use.

The right side is used for expansion. This is where the Apex 300 connects to the B300K battery via a shorter, more manageable cable. Compared to the previous longer cable version, this design saves space and improves efficiency with a more compact setup. That link locks securely and routes downward. A sealed accessory port sits next to the connector. The upper portion includes additional ventilation similar to the left side. There’s no interference between ports, and stacking doesn’t block airflow.

The B300K adds 2764.8Wh to the total system capacity. At nearly 79 pounds, it’s only slightly lighter than the main unit. Each side of the B300K includes a top-mounted handle for lifting. When docked, the battery aligns flush with the Apex 300 and maintains overall balance. Up to four B300K modules can be stacked, but extra securing is recommended when exceeding two levels.

Cooling is managed through a dual fan system located behind the side grills. These stay active during higher loads or rapid charging. Fan noise remains even, with no distracting pitch or rattle. This makes the Apex 300 usable near sleeping areas or indoor workspaces without disturbance.

DC output is delivered through the optional Hub D1. This hub adds USB-C, USB-A, DC5521, a 12V auto socket, and a 50A Anderson connector standing out as a high-power DC port designed for safety and stability. It attaches vertically and doesn’t expand the unit’s footprint. If you rely on DC or USB-based devices, the hub becomes essential.

The Bluetti app mirrors much of what’s shown on the Apex 300’s physical display. Once paired via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, it displays a central battery status ring with remaining percentage, real-time breakdowns of AC and DC input/output wattage, and estimated time until full charge or depletion. Users can toggle AC and DC outputs, track solar contribution, and review historical usage. The interface uses strong visual cues with all major controls accessible directly from the home screen. Charging modes, notifications, and system alerts are accessed without diving through submenus. The layout prioritizes quick access and clarity over aesthetics.

Everything about the Apex 300 centers on performance. It’s a modular, high-output power system designed for actual use, not showroom aesthetics. Whether keeping food cold during blackouts or running appliances off-grid, it stays focused on delivering energy where it’s needed most.

Performance

This review centers on standalone use without any home integration. When the power goes out, whether from weather, an accident, or a grid failure, you plug in what you need and the Apex 300 just runs. No rewiring. No fuss. All testing here used the onboard AC ports directly.

In one overnight “staged” outage, the unit powered a full-size refrigerator, router, lights, and a breathing machine. Output stayed steady, and the digital panel clearly showed remaining time and load. The app mirrored this from another room. Power usage was easy to track, and the fridge didn’t cycle off.

On a long weekend of stay-at-home glamping, the Apex 300 handled a Typhur air fryer, a drip coffee machine, and a portable AC without blinking. The 3,840W output had no problem handling the startup surge. The fans kicked on but didn’t become a distraction. Nothing tripped, nothing overheated.

On another occasion, it powered backyard lighting, a portable fridge, and charged phones during an overnight glamping setup. Later, during a neighborhood blackout caused by a downed transformer, the Apex 300 powered a microwave, a drip coffee maker, and several LED lanterns while also recharging phones and two-way radios. It helped keep things calm without dragging out a gas generator. During another outage, it kept two fans and a portable AC unit running through the night in a hot upstairs office. While I don’t rely on a CPAP device, anyone who does can rest assured knowing the Apex 300 can power one continuously without issue. The ports are spaced well enough to plug in multiple devices without overlap or cord clutter.

If your fridge runs on AC power, as most home units do, you don’t need anything extra. Just plug it into one of the four 120V outlets or the larger NEMA sockets, and it works. The Apex 300 delivers clean, reliable AC power for standard appliances. However, if you have a 12V DC fridge like those used in vans or campsites, limitations appear. The Apex 300 doesn’t have native DC output for those loads without an accessory.

Everything here was tested without tying into a breaker panel or generator loop. This is power where you need it, when the wall socket doesn’t exist. The Apex 300 isn’t just spec sheets—it held up during real blackouts, heatwaves, and extended unplugged days. It powered what mattered, and didn’t get in the way.

Emergency Runtime Scenarios

In a blackout with no charging, the Apex 300 offers 2,764.8Wh. Adding the B300K doubles that to 5,529.6Wh. A basic emergency load including a fridge, laptop, router, phone, lights, and a CPAP draws about 1,950 to 2,200Wh daily.

The Apex 300 alone powers this for roughly one day. Stretch it to 1.5 days by cutting nonessential loads. With the B300K, expect 2 to 2.5 days. Focus on the fridge and communication gear to reach 3 days.

Cycle loads instead of running everything at once. Run the fridge during the day. Charge devices one at a time. Use lights only when needed.

This LEGO Excitebike playable arcade cabinet will take you back to your childhood

I grew up playing arcade games that essentially helped shape the evolution of the gaming industry. Like many millennials, I also spent countless hours of my adolescence, immersed in the pixelated worlds of Super Mario, Contra, Tank Battle, Road Fighter, and Double Dragon. While, Road Fighter was easily the biggest gobbler of my time and money (had to visit game parlors after school to fight it out with friends and strangers), I also dedicated a lot of time navigating the challenging countdown of the Excitebike, which was a welcome break: it was easy on the mind and perfect for winding down from the wigwagging of the car frenzy.

The 2D dirt bike racing game on the Nintendo Entertainment System was my first real taste of virtual bike racing, which later transpired into the arcade games controlled by motorbikes. But frankly, the former had its own charm, and the moment I saw this LEGO iteration of the game on the Brick Slopes Denver 2025, it was an instant hit with me, like it is with the thousands of fans going bonkers about the idea on social media. So, what’s it all about?

Designer: LEGO Ideas

LEGO Ideas is a platform where amazing brickwork comes to life that translates into our lives with the help of fan love. The Excitebike Playable Arcade – a real-life, miniature arcade machine built with a controllable Excitebike game – is longing for some love. Made entirely of LEGO bricks, of course, this idea is really intuitive and fluid. The impressive build really deserves the backing to be turned into a real LEGO set; you and I can make it at home at our convenience to relive the bygone era. Bringing Excitebike out of the pixelated gameplay to a controllable brick-built arcade, the classic NES motocross game is fully controllable and lets the player rejoice in the bike stunts. “You’ll be able to catch air, pop wheelies, change lanes, and even do flips as you speed down the motorized scrolling track,” the description by the creator on LEGO Ideas reads.

Launched under the Nintendo franchise in 1985, the Excitebike was a motocross racing video game wherein you could race both – on your own or against the competitors – but the real competition was always against the ticking clock, which defined the position you were awarded. In between, the bike went up and down the obstacles as you steered it between lanes; the same gameplay has been recreated on the LEGO arcade Excitebike. The fully playable arcade game lets you guide the bike between lanes and navigate jumps of various sizes, evoking the nostalgia of the retro game in millennials and the younger generation (who never tasted the love of arcade) alike. Interestingly, the LEGO arcade allows you to design your own race course as well, like in the real game. While at the time of writing, we are unsure of the number of bricks that have gone into building the arcade machine and what powers the entire gameplay, but we do learn that the LED onboard allows ample light in the inside of the cabinet for uninterrupted gaming.

It’s still thin, still portable, but now anchored by a redesigned chassis, improved display tech, and sharper software integration.

Design That Supports the Format

The latest Yoga Book 9i comes in a Tidal Teal finish. Its aluminum unibody measures 315.09 x 209.56 x 15.5 to 15.95mm and weighs 1.22 kg. The curved, polished edges don’t just look premium. They soften grip points when holding the device vertically or folding it closed. Small choices like this help the 9i feel less like a fragile prototype and more like a machine built to move.

The rotating soundbar hinge returns, housing two tweeters and flanked by dual woofers at the corners. Dolby Atmos optimization handles the audio processing. It’s a quad-speaker system that manages directional clarity and stronger bass than you’d expect from a sub-3-pound device. Because the hinge rotates with orientation, audio quality stays consistent regardless of screen setup.

Displays That Drive the Experience

The twin 14-inch OLEDs each carry a 2.8K resolution (2880 x 1800), full DCI-P3 color coverage, and a 16:10 aspect ratio. They’re PureSight displays with touch and stylus support. Visual upgrades in the 2025 model include VRR (variable refresh rate) up to 120Hz, which adapts to content in real-time.

While both screens are identical, Lenovo allows them to work either independently or as an extended canvas. A five-finger tap can waterfall content across both displays. Move it to the lower half and Lenovo’s widget bar takes over, pulling in weather, notes, or quick tools.

The folio itself folds and props the laptop in vertical or horizontal configurations. It doubles as a keyboard cover and transport sleeve. In dual landscape, the Yoga Book feels like a compact dual-monitor desktop. In dual portrait, it’s tuned for vertical workflows like reading, writing, or coding.

Keyboard feedback is punchy and quiet, with 1.5mm of travel. The right edge now includes Quick Keys: shortcuts for performance profiles, audio modes, eye care toggles, phone syncing, and one user-defined function. These let you jump between modes without diving through menus.

Software Matters

Lenovo’s User Center app anchors the Yoga Book 9i’s dual-screen experience with a suite of controls that feel tailored rather than tacked on. You can manage brightness independently per panel, lock rotation for one screen while leaving the other flexible, and easily reposition windows using gesture-based interactions. A five-finger tap expands a selected app across both displays, while dragging a window toward the center snap zone activates cross-screen shifting with intelligent positioning suggestions.

The UI supports a variety of software modes designed for multi-taskers. Smart Note enables handwritten notes on one screen while referencing documents on the other. Smart Reader pairs full-page content display with live annotations or research tools, turning the 9i into a two-window study or review station. A quick three-finger tap brings up the virtual touchpad. Eight-finger taps summon the full virtual keyboard. F11 toggles widget mode with glanceable info like weather and calendar, and sticky notes can be accessed with a single pen tap.

It supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4.

Despite driving two high-res displays, the 88Wh battery offers a full day of regular use. Charging is via USB-C with 65W PD. Ports are limited to three Thunderbolt 4-compatible USB-C jacks, so expect to rely on adapters.

Camera AI Features and Final Thought

There’s a 5MP hybrid webcam with infrared for facial login. A hardware privacy shutter disables the sensor physically. Lenovo Vantage enables AI-based presence detection and screen dimming, as well as battery conservation tools when you step away.

Designed by fjcstudio as part of the Liverpool Civic Place development in Sydney, this striking new library isn’t just a place to read, it’s a place to gather, grow, and imagine. Serving one of the most rapidly developing and culturally diverse regions in Australia, Yellamundie is a civic space built for now and built for what’s next.

Walk by Yellamundie and you’ll immediately know something is different. Its oval form and round windows break away from the rigid geometry of the surrounding urban blocks. This building curves like the nearby Georges River it’s inspired by, creating a gentle pull for people to step inside.

The building is transparent from all sides, offering an open invitation to the community. It doesn’t just hide books behind walls; it puts activity on display, showing people reading, collaborating, and exploring inside. At night, the library glows like a lantern, a literal and symbolic beacon in the heart of the city.

Beneath the sleek exterior lies a deeply thoughtful and flexible interior. The building spans 5,000 square metres, space made possible by nestling part of it below ground, beneath the public plaza. The subterranean level is flooded with natural light, thanks to skylights and a lush, biophilic courtyard, creating a quiet zone for exhibitions, reading, and study.

On the ground and upper levels, the space transforms into something much more dynamic: study zones, maker spaces, digital labs, and adaptable event areas. All shelving is mobile, allowing the entire layout to shift based on programming or future needs.

Importantly, Yellamundie isn’t a one-size-fits-all building, it’s been carefully designed for a community that spans cultures, generations, and needs. There are multilingual collections, heritage research spaces, and community-led programs. There are job-readiness workshops, homework help sessions, and Create Spaces for digital learning. It’s a place where people don’t just consume knowledge, they create it.

One of the most joyful aspects of the library is its celebration of youth. The entire top floor is reserved for young people, giving them ownership of a safe, vibrant space. I upgraded my iPhone 15 Pro to a Spigen ZeroOne case this year, and I’ve never been happier. It has much more character than those boring transparent cases, and for one, it helps me differentiate my iPhone from other iPhones lying around on a table. The case relies on Spigen’s R&D when it comes to building protective covers, which means I’ve never really worried about dropping my device, or rather, worried about the device getting damaged when I drop it. I assume that’s the kind of reassurance a Galaxy S25 Edge owner would love too.

The ZeroOne case for the S25 Edge has a uniquely challenging product brief – it has to protect the ultra-slim phone without adding too much to its thickness. To that end, the case does its job phenomenally well. It protects, it enables, it showcases, and the best part, it also packs a built-in magnetic ring to give your S25 Edge MagSafe and Qi2 compatibility, allowing you to snap accessories and chargers to the back without having to separately add a MagSafe sticker. Spigen calls it their MagFit technology, and I honestly wish every Android phone case had it – because the peace I get from hearing my phone snap to its magnetic charger is rare and satisfying.

Each case comes with a bespoke graphic on the back, giving you an X-ray view of the components inside. Spigen doesn’t slap random graphics (or the same graphic) onto every phone. For instance, the graphic on my iPhone case is very different from the one on this S25 Edge case. The design highlights the components inside the phone, from its battery to its chipset, ribbon connectors, the USB-C module, and even a graphic around the wireless charging coil (which hides the MagFit magnet array too).

The best part – and something my designer-brain loves – is that the print on the back is ‘3-dimensional’. The graphic is printed on top as well as the bottom of the transparent backplate, giving it depth and parallax, so it doesn’t feel flat or static. Clever, intentional, gorgeous. That backplate sits within an outer TPU frame, with tactile buttons, and air cushions around the corners that protect your phone from drops as high as 4 feet.

This Add-On Module Turns the Flipper Zero Into a Pocket UV Radiation Scanner

The Flipper Zero has always felt like a digital Swiss Army knife for hardware hackers – part toy, part toolkit, and a whole lot of trouble for the devices around it. Out of the box, it could spoof RFID badges, copy remotes, analyze sub-GHz signals, and poke into wireless protocols with the ease of a gadget built by a Bond villain’s favorite engineer. But where it really opened up was at the top, with those GPIO pins that transformed it from a multi-tool into a platform.

Enter Michael Baisch’s UV Meter module. It’s a thumbnail-sized add-on that plugs directly into the Flipper’s GPIO header and does one thing extremely well: it measures ultraviolet radiation. UVA, UVB, and even UVC rays most of us can’t see, don’t think about, but probably should. It’s like giving your Flipper Zero sunscreen awareness, which feels oddly poetic for a device usually associated with penetration testing and hacking.

The core of the module is the AS7331 sensor, a surprisingly sophisticated little chip that Baisch had to wrestle into submission. Reading UV data isn’t just about pulling values from registers. The AS7331 speaks in wavelengths and photodiode voltages, not clean numerical outputs. So Baisch wrote his own library to interface with it via I²C, making the sensor’s data digestible for the Flipper’s tiny 128×64 pixel screen.

What you get is live UV index readings broken into the A, B, and C spectrums. UVA is the long-wave stuff that penetrates deep into skin, causing wrinkles and damage over time. UVB is what gives you sunburns. UVC is mostly filtered by the atmosphere, but if you’re anywhere near artificial UV sources like sterilization lamps, knowing it’s there matters.

And the module doesn’t just spit out raw numbers. Baisch paid attention to the UX, cramming a clean, usable interface into the Flipper’s minimal display. There’s even a wiring guide built into the app for DIYers who’d rather solder their own sensor than buy the full PCB. But for the rest of us, he’s made the hardware files public, so you can 3D print, fab, or Tindie your way into having a plug-and-play UV monitor on your Flipper.

Sure, it’s not as headline-grabbing as cloning key fobs or brute-forcing infrared signals, but it taps into something arguably more relevant. UV exposure is tied to everything from cancer risk to sleep patterns. Being able to measure it on a whim (especially using a tool originally designed for digital mischief) is a compelling narrative shift.

It’s another reminder that the Flipper Zero is an absolute hardware chameleon capable of so much more than we know. With every new module, it finds fresh territory to explore. Today it’s the sun. Tomorrow? Who knows. Maybe something in the air, the soil, the human body.

Music lamp concept is a sleeping aid concept for the best (worst) insomniacs

When I was younger and was already suffering from insomnia, some people said that my sleeping patterns would normalize when I get older. Well here I am, several years older, and still having trouble sleeping almost every night. Of course I don’t blame it on my age but rather on screens, too much caffeine, and stress. Oh, and also my lack of discipline. I’m at a point where I know drastic measures have to be taken.

This concept for a sleeping aid device appeals to me and I wish it was an actual product I could purchase. The Light Player – Aid-Sleeping Music Lamp is a concept for an innovative gadget designed to help users unwind and drift into peaceful slumber through a perfect blend of calming light and soothing sound. is a modern sleep aid that combines two powerful relaxation tools in one sleek device: ambient lighting and gentle music. This smart lamp isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s a thoughtfully engineered device aimed at creating an ideal sleep environment.

The device has three sleeping assistance modes so you can check which one, or which combination, would work for you. The Lunar Eclipse Mode uses FlameWarm lighting technology that simulates the different phases of the moon, from a full moon to a crescent moon, that is supposedly sleep inducing. If that doesn’t work for you, there is the Scene Mode that has LED lights recreating 8 natural healing landscapes and combines it with white noise so you get an immersive environment that should be able to lull you to sleep.

Lastly, there is the Breathing/Meditation Mode which combines rhythmic lighting with scientific sounds which should be able to help you meditate and eventually fall into a deep sleep state. The device itself uses a record player-like aesthetic with a large area light and an interface that can be intuitively used. It is made from high-quality fabric and metal materials but with a minimalist look.

Now I don’t know if this will actually work on someone like me (and self-discipline still plays a huge part in this of course) but it can probably help establish a consistent bedtime ritual which is essential in improving sleep hygiene. Whether you’re an insomniac, a light sleeper, or someone simply trying to reduce screen time before bed, this device offers a non-invasive and natural approach to better sleep. Well, if it ever comes to light, so to speak.
