In “Playground Equipment for Teenagers to Senior Citizens,” we looked at how playgrounds can benefit the bodies of folks of all ages. Now play expert, industrial designer and design educator Cas Holman has got a new book out on how play can benefit adult creativity and more.
Holman ought to know; she’s designed playgrounds and toys, and has held workshops for the likes of Disney Imagineering, LEGO, Nike and Google. In PLAYFUL: How Play Shifts Our Thinking, Inspires Connection, and Sparks Creativity, she shares her learnings.
Adults need play in our lives, but not as we view play for children. We need to re-learn how to free play. Since free play for adults has less to do with the activities we engage in than with our mindset, we need to find ways to shift perspective.
Holman delivers a call to action for adults to tap into their Play Voice, and allow play back into our lives in a way that will change them for the better. Play can look different for each of us: it might be a conversation with a stranger, a meandering walk in nature, a dance party in your kitchen, or even rearranging your living room. Each of these activities is “free play,” that is, play driven by our internal desires rather than by external reward.
In Part One, readers will learn why free play is so important – not just for children, but for adults as well. Then, Holman provides the steps readers can take to achieve a playful mindset to shift their lives in Part Two.

CANOVA is a sculptural toothpaste dispenser that elevates everyday design, making the morning routine feel more like a ritual than a rush. Conceived by industrial designer Mara Pezzotta and the Chrome Cherry team, the product bridges clean design with everyday simplicity, crafted from materials reminiscent of Italian Neoclassical sculpture and bringing a sense of calm and minimalism to the bathroom.
It replaces cluttered counters and messy tubes with a chic, self-contained form that keeps things tidy and effortless. Designed to extract every bit of toothpaste, it delivers a precise, consistent amount each time. It is also designed ot be accessible friendly, able to be easily used by people of all ages, and even those with mobility challenges.

Chrome Cherry has previously led successful crowdfunding campaigns, including the globally acclaimed Nimuno Loops, and continues its mission to turn everyday tools into design icons. With CANOVA, the design team considers how toothpaste tubes can somewhat disrupt even the most thoughtfully curated bathroom, becoming crumpled, sticky, and unsightly. CANOVA solves this with style, forming a freestanding cylindrical bottle that conceals the tube completely. Mara Pezzotta also integrates an elegant food-grade silicone top with indented touch points, while a seamless vacuum action dispensing mechanism draws out every drop of paste from the tube.
Whether set on a stone vanity or beside a sunlit window, CANOVA is envisioned to elevate the everyday with its refined materiality. On view at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona through August 17th, 2025, ‘La Padrina and the belongings of domesticity’ is an artistic intervention by Xevi Bayona that turns the iconic building into a vessel for personal memory. More than twenty everyday objects, once belonging to Bayona’s late aunt, known as la padrina, are installed along the ceiling of the Pavilion, forming a floating domestic scene that hovers above the polished travertine floor. A bed, a lamp, a coat rack, and a table and chair set all suspended like echoes of a vanished life, now reframed against the austere modernism of Mies and Lilly Reich’s 1929 design.

By composing the installation as a horizontal band that runs along the ceiling, architect and artist Xevi Bayona creates a visual and symbolic axis that divides sky and ground, memory and presence, and intimacy and abstraction. The installation invites a shift in perception with its upside-down layout. Through this displacement, Bayona invites visitors to rethink how spaces become inhabited and how objects hold on to memory.
The intervention draws its title from Josefina Camó Valls, nicknamed Pepi, who was born in 1927, around the same time the original pavilion was being designed, and lived her entire life in Olot, a city in Spain. She never married, worked as an embroiderer, and left behind a house full of quietly accumulated belongings. Bayona, her nephew and godson, salvaged and relocated these personal items from her home to the Barcelona Pavilion, not on the floor, as one might expect, but up above, creating a surreal reversal, exploring the kind of domesticity the Pavilion might possess.
Part of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe’s program of contemporary interventions, La Padrina uses metaphor and contrast to explore life, death, and identity through the overlooked belongings of a single life. For Bayona, whose broader practice combines architecture with ephemeral installations and storytelling, this project is both deeply personal and architecturally precise.

Staring in the 19th century, West Virginia and Kentucky became powerhouses of coal production. When electricity came around in the 20th century, those two states provided much of the nation’s energy.
Coal production peaked in 2008, then went into sharp decline. Hundreds of mines were shuttered and unemployment soared as our economy moved away from the dirty fuel.
However, there is another way that those two states could again become energy powerhouses, in a much greener way. Drive through either of those states and you’ll see how incredibly hilly the topography is. Your average Kentucky or West Virginia homestead is not a good place to drop anything spherical.

What they could use is some help from ARES, a company based in Nevada. Their name stands for Advanced Rail Energy Storage, and they’ve developed a brilliant chemical-free large-scale battery system based on something Newton figured out: Gravity.
The company uses recycled steel to build train tracks that travel up a slope.
On these tracks are placed basic railcars, also built with recycled steel. These cars are loaded up with whatever is locally available that’s heavy: Rocks, concrete blocks, cement, earth.
The cars are equipped with electric motors.
The entire system is then connected to a sustainable energy source, like solar or wind.
Those energy sources are notoriously intermittent. During those spurts where energy is created, it’s used to power the cars up to the top of the hill.
When energy is needed, the cars are allowed to slide back down the hill.
On the way down, they use rengerative braking to send that stored power back into the grid. The efficiency is about 90%.
The system uses no fossil fuels, produces no emissions, and consumes no water. Being chemical-free, there is no chance the facility will burst into flames and explode. The ballast is sourced locally, and the rails and cars are made using recycled materials. Chemical batteries can degrade over time; but rocks and concrete stay heavy forever; the system will continue to work as long as gravity does.
Currently the company’s proof-of-concept GravityLine facility is located in Nevada, and they appear to be targeting western states for expansion. The governors of West Virginia and Kentucky should give them a call.
Also, I would love to see a smaller-scale version of this developed, or open-source plans released for backyard versions. Where I live, I’ve seen “hillbilly engineering” firsthand, and it’s often ingenious. I bet handy folks living in hilly terrain would rather rig something like this up than pay five figures for a whole-house backup generator that runs on expensive propane.

This Hiroi Chair was designed by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin, a/k/a Industrial Facility. Featuring exposed fasteners and clearly being made out of stock materials, its humble aesthetic may surprise those who know the duo’s work; however, this was designed specifically for Ishinomaki Lab.
To explain, Ishinomaki Lab is a volunteer design collective formed in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. Their mission was disaster relief from a furniture design perspective: They held workshops for residents where they taught them how to build basic furniture out of commonly available tools and stock materials”
“A balanced chair that respects raw material dimensions. Wider than it is deep, the solid design keeps the centre of gravity closer to the front than the back, ensuring stability. An elegant single-radius steel tube provides back support while hinting at the rounded form of the human body. It has been created with small spaces in mind, ideal for nestling under a counter.”
Surprisingly, this DIY furniture aesthetic caught on, and the organization continues teaching workshops to this day. In order to generate funding, they ask established designers to design pieces that the organization sells; however, attendees of the workshops can learn to build the pieces for free. It is a clever form of wealth redistribution, where moneyed patrons can purchase prestige furniture, and the proceeds then go towards teaching those with less means to build the same pieces for themselves.
The version of the Hiroi Chair sold in Japan is made of local Noto Cypress; the UK version, Douglas Fir.

There are DIYs and then there is this retro-futuristic gadget hub that demands all the attention it has got owing to its Cyberpunk vibe. Meet the Dual-Screen RPI Dev Cyberdesk by DIYer SECTOR 07 (a modder and developer), that is a builder’s dream. The project is a unique combination of aesthetics and modern computing, which I’m sure you’ve never seen before.
The Raspberry Pi-based project is inspired by the likes of Pi5-powered Cyberdesk and the 2064 Cyberdesk. The maker has chosen a 3D printed enclosure for the computer, and the programmable inputs make it even more elusive. The cyberdesk has dual 9-inch touchscreens that balance the form factor and functionality as well. All the .stl files for the design are up on GitHub, which is quite generous of the creator.

The enclosure has angular lines and bright filament to add the element of retro-futurism. To add the perfect snap fit mechanism, a lot of 3D modeling and iteration was required. Of course, avid DIYers can tinker around with the files to create their own versions, but for me, this one is amazing. The central hub of the machine is a collection of KiCad designed circuit boards connected to the Raspberry Pi’s GPIO pins. These pins are the input and output channels of the machine.
The system’s core is split across three dedicated boards – one for managing power and four programmable buttons, another for handling I2C sensor data, and a third that exposes the 40-pin GPIO header for shield compatibility. A 6A-capable power circuit featuring an N-channel MOSFET drives the twin displays, while a USB hub with integrated power injection manages stable power delivery. PCBWay’s high-quality PCBs demanded precise soldering, especially around the small pads and potential shorts.
The assembly process proved every bit as intricate as the electronics. After a first attempt was thwarted by a swapped resistor and a shorted connector, Sector 07’s YouTube teardown shows how methodical debugging got the deck breathing life. The dual 9‑inch screens perch on custom 3D‑printed rotation mounts equipped with miniature ball bearings—offering silky smooth movement that locks firmly in either portrait or landscape mode without wobble. Flat‑flex cables then carry signals cleanly between the Pi and peripherals, preserving the deck’s slim profile while avoiding cable clutter .
User interaction goes beyond touch: a compact mechanical keyboard sits behind the lower display, complemented by a linear volume slider, four programmable macro keys, and a rotatable encoder with an integrated push‑button. For hardware hackers, an external I2C port and exposed GPIO header make adding sensors or shields a breeze. SECTOR 07 even baked in a quick‑release clamp for the Pi itself—no screwdriver needed when swapping SD cards or upgrading the board.
To tie it all together, a bespoke GUI overlays on one screen, graphically reporting the state of buttons, encoder positions, GPIO pins, and any connected I2C sensors—turning raw signals into a polished interface for field testing or live demos. With open‑source .STL, STEP files and KiCad schematics are available on GitHub; the RPI DEV is as much a blueprint for experimentation as it is a showpiece. At roughly $50–60 per display plus component costs, it’s not the cheapest DIY build, but few projects capture that retro‑futuristic cyberpunk vibe with this level of finish and functionality.
