Studio Kiln refreshes Vinted identity with flowing ribbon motif

The new look is a result of Studio Kiln spending a month sitting alongside Vinted’s in-house design team at the HQ in Lithuania.

Vinted’s roots go back to 2008, when Milda Mitkute was moving house but had too many clothes to take with her.

Justas Janauskas offered help and built a website to allow her to give away her clothes to friends.

From that, Mitkute and Janauskas co-founded Vinted.

Now, Vinted has 2,200 staff working from the Vilnius HQ and offices around Europe, and millions of registered users across more than 20 markets in Europe and North America.

Revenue was up 36% in 2024 compared with 2023, and net profit soared 330% year-on-year.

For its brand refresh, Vinted wanted a team from a design agency to work alongside the in-house designers in Vilnius for a month.

Studio Kiln’s creative director Charlie Hocking co-founded the agency in Cornwall in 2022, having previously been at DesignStudio, where he worked on London-based e-commerce site, Depop, and OLX, a vast network of online second-hand marketplaces in countries including Bulgaria, Brazil and Kazakhstan.

A former DesignStudio colleague had joined Vinted as a project manager, and Kiln was one of the agencies interviewed for this job.

“Kiln had only been going for a short time, and I was able to go over there and integrate with their team,” Hocking says.

More typically, such a project would be handled remotely, but Hocking saw benefits from being on the ground.

“It was helpful to become a team member and understand the practicalities and roadblocks to getting work approved.

“It’s a massive team, so there was a need to move slowly and be patient.

“And we all bonded closely, and that trust was built that much quicker.”


Like many successful or high-profile businesses, Vinted had spawned imitators.

The business wanted to “differentiate more clearly within a competitive landscape”, says a spokesperson for Vinted’s design team.

Some of these competitors had adopted a variation of Vinted’s turquoise as a brand colour.

“So the Vinted brand wasn’t recognisable enough,” Hocking adds.

And in early 2025, Vinted introduced a new brand idea, ‘New Again’.

“It captures the core of what Vinted offers – giving items a second life – while also providing creative breadth to express our purpose and offering in fresh and engaging ways,” the spokesperson says.

It was the task of Kiln and the in-house team to translate that idea into a refreshed visual identity that would allow the company to amplify its external communications and unify the brand as it expands into other categories, like electronics and high-value fashion.

“We opted for a darker hue, as it gave a little more sophistication. And we paired that with mint to give zip,” Hocking explains.

This brand refresh didn’t include the existing hand-written-style logo, which has been retained.

“Our logo is one of Vinted’s most recognisable brand assets, so it was important to preserve its core throughout the brand evolution,” the spokesperson says.

“Rather than making drastic changes, we chose to build the rest of the identity around it, ensuring continuity and familiarity while still allowing for growth and refresh.”

Instead, the focus was on the colour palette, the typefaces and the motion principles of certain elements of the brand.

The new visual identity is built around the notion of unravelling the logo’s script, to create a colourful, flowing line or ribbon that guides users around Vinted’s app and website and beyond.

The line weaves its way through the image frames of items for sale, and is intended to add tactility and life to the digital experience.

“We wanted the lines to feel hand-drawn and textured,” Hocking adds, so that their imperfection was a nod to the second-hand nature of the products on sale.

Meanwhile, Vinted’s design team commissioned Very Cool Studio in California to create a new weight of VC Honey – chosen for its vintage warmth and versatility – for the brand.

Previously, Vinted used Inter, which is designed to work well in small sizes and is often found in apps, Hocking says.

“It’s successful because it lacks personality. But it doesn’t work with brand.”

This isn’t Vinted’s only refresh in recent years – since 2017, there have been three major iterations.

In 2018, the former logo was ditched in favour of the current Vinted wordmark.

Then in 2020, new graphic elements and typography were added; and two years later, the wordmark lettering was refined to improve legibility and accessibility.

“We aim to keep our brand identity evolving continuously, to avoid the need for complete rebrands,” the spokesperson says.

Since the new look has been introduced, “We’ve seen positive sentiment from users and partners, consistent or increased performance metrics, and improved perceptions of the brand overall,” the spokesperson adds.

Enslaved Cyborg Cockroaches Used as Cheap Rescue Robots

This is both innovative and disturbing: Scientists at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore have developed a way to enslave cockroaches by turning them into cyborgs. These are used in humanitarian aid missions, like searching through rubble for survivors, where it would be desirable to command a small army of robots. By electronically enslaving the cockroaches, it saves the trouble of needing to produce said robots.

Led by Professor Hirotaka Sato from NTU’s School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, the team starts with captured, live Madagascar hissing cockroaches. These are among the largest species of cockroach on Earth, reaching up to 3″ in length.

The cockroaches are anesthetized, then held in place by a bracket as a tiny microcontroller—an “electronic backpack”–is surgically attached, with electrodes implanted into the cockroach.

This microcontroller then sends electrical stimulation into the roach, manipulating it into walking. The researchers can make the roach walk, turn, speed up and slow down. The roaches are alive the entire time.

The entire surgical procedure is automated, and the team refers to the rig they built as “the world’s first automated cyborg insect ‘factory line.'” It can “process” four roaches in under eight minutes. (Prior to this, the “backpacks” were attached manually and took over an hour.)

After testing their controlled cockroaches in an obstacle course, earlier this year the research team sent ten of the cyborg-bugs to Myanmar with the Singapore Civil Defence Force. The roaches were used to search for survivors following Myanmar’s 7.7 magnitude earthquake.

The field deployment demonstrated the potential of insect-based robotics for locating survivors in disaster-hit areas where conventional robots would have struggled with access and short operational times.
“With learning from our field deployment, it’s now essential to create infrastructure that supports mass production and deployment,” said Prof Sato. “Our assembly line is the first step towards that goal, and we believe it will pave the way for more reliable cyborg applications, such as inspecting large civil structures for defects.”

The researchers say that the “backpacks” can be removed from the roaches with no ill effect on them. But what bugs me about this, pun intended, is that the insects are living creatures that don’t have any choice in the matter. And it’s not difficult to imagine scaling this system up to control larger creatures.

Open Reel Ensemble performs on JIGAKKYU, a traditional folk instrument that produces analog synth sounds by bowing the bamboo sticks with stretched magnetic tapes. The Japanese musical group is known for playing old reel-to-reel tape recorders as musical instruments, and JIGAKKYU is one of them. In the recent performance, they set up a Pioneer reel-to-reel tape recorder on a table. This machine records and plays back audio using magnetic tape that moves between two reels, and the tape recorder supplies the audio source and controls.

 

The magnetic tape extends from the machine and stretches through the bamboo bow, which applies friction to the tape surface of the folk instrument JIGAKKYU, causing vibration and movement. This bowing affects the playback speed and generates the audio effects during performance. When the group draws the bow across the tape, the tape moves at different speeds. Faster bowing increases tape speed and raises the pitch of the audio, while slower bowing means the opposite. The direction of bowing determines whether the tape moves forward or backward.

Moving tape converts magnetic data into audio signals

 

The folk instrument JIGAKKYU with a bamboo bow reads the magnetic information on the tape. As the tape moves or vibrates, the magnetic data converts into audio signals, and this process can recreate the original recordings stored on the tape medium. The performers interact with the instrument by manipulating the tape position and tension, meaning moving the tape that changes which part of the recording plays. Adjusting tape tension also affects the playback speed and pitch of the audio output, hence the slower one producing a deeper sound.

 

The bamboo frame of the folk instrument JIGAKKYU acts as a resonating chamber. Sound from the magnetic tape playback amplifies through the wooden bow, and this amplification method copies techniques used in traditional stringed instruments but applies them to recorded audio. The Open Reel Ensemble operates their own folk instrument JIGAKKYU and bamboo bows, but the trio coordinates their tape manipulation to create harmonized music from the stored recordings. Instead of simply playing back recordings, the trio demonstrates how magnetic tapes tied around wooden bows can manipulate and reshape the audio and produce analog-synth sounds.

BIG’s 670 mesquit mixed-use development approved by los angeles city council

Bjarke Ingels Group Gets Green Light for Los Angeles project

 

The Los Angeles City Council has given the green light to BIG’s (Bjarke Ingels Group) 670 Mesquit, marking a major milestone for the rapidly evolving Arts District. Located along the LA River, the development will introduce a bold, stepped complex composed of four interconnected buildings rising up to 34 stories. The design, developed in collaboration with Vella Group, is anchored by a concrete grid superstructure reminiscent of a ziggurat, which encloses recessed glass volumes. Each interior module is fully customizable by tenants, allowing spaces to adapt to changing needs while maintaining open, inviting layouts. Topping many of the frames are landscaped terraces, providing generous outdoor areas and enhancing the connection between interior and exterior spaces.

As a true mixed-use hub, 670 Mesquit will encompass 676,000 square feet of office space, approximately 895 residential units including affordable housing, a 271-room hotel, retail and dining venues, a charter elementary school, fitness facilities, gallery spaces, and more. BIG’s modular approach merges the industrial character of the Arts District’s warehouse lofts with the flexibility of contemporary living, creating a dynamic environment for work, play, and residence.

 

A standout feature of the project by the Bjarke Ingels-led group is its effort to bridge the Arts District with the Los Angeles River. A new park is planned atop the existing freight rail line, providing a long-awaited public green space and helping to revitalize the waterfront corridor. Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium’s demolition news

 

News surrounding the potential demolition of the concrete and modernist Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Kenzo Tange (1913–2005) in Japan has spurred an ongoing movement to save the beloved landmark, home to local sports events in Takamatsu for over 50 years. While demolition was scheduled for 2025, a major update emerged on July 2025, when the prefectural government announced a formal acquisition and preservation plan, including a private proposal to fully renovate and repurpose the building as a hotel and cultural hub — a self-funded alternative that could spare the icon from demolition.

Shut down in 2014 due to lack of maintenance

 

The Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium by Kenzo Tange was closed on September 30, 2014, due to the need for seismic retrofitting and a roof leak caused by rusting suspension cables, which had to be replaced for the building to remain in use.

 

For years, no prospective bidders stepped forward to salvage the historical landmark, and the team behind the World Monument Funds feared that the situation might increase the likelihood of demolition. In June 2018, the gymnasium was included among eight global sites to receive preservation funding from American Express through the World Monuments Fund program.

Kenzo Tange reinforced concrete for his vessel building

 

In the 1950s, Masanori Kaneko, then governor of Japan’s Kagawa Prefecture, tapped Kenzo Tange to design two new buildings in the prefectural capital, Takamatsu. At the time, Tange was Japan’s leading architect, also working on the design of the Yoyogi National Gymnasium for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

 

For the Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium, the architect used modern materials to evoke the form of a traditional Japanese wooden barge as well as the strong, supple body of an athlete. The tilted-ship shape of the structure, the root of its moniker ‘boat gym,’ consists of a deep concrete ring carried on four massive supports, with a roof of thin concrete slabs supported by suspension cables. Inside, the sports hall lies above the entry level, which contains other facilities including dressing rooms and offices. Built in the 1960s, the gymnasium was Tange’s way of exploring how reinforced concrete could create a vast, dynamic interior space.

 

The eaves soar upward above the welcoming glass facade of the entrance, while the symmetric curved ceiling evokes excitement during competitions and ceremonies. The World Monuments Fund has warned that destroying this invaluable gymnasium would be ‘an irretrievable loss.’

A NEW FUTURE FOR THE ‘BOAT GYM’

 

Due to this support, the WMF launched a project in 2019 to foster community initiatives against demolition. However, until recently, without a solid buyer to restore and maintain the structure, the prospect of bulldozing the building remained on the table. Now, the self-funded private proposal signals a turning point: if approved, the plan would not only preserve one of Kenzo Tange’s modernist masterpieces but also transform it into a vibrant destination for art, culture, and tourism — offering a sustainable alternative to demolition and ensuring the legacy of the ‘boat gym’ for future generations.
