Located within the UNESCO-protected Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region of Hungary, the Sauska Tokaj Winery by BORD Architectural Studio integrates contemporary design with a storied winemaking landscape. Its elevated, lens-like forms appear to float above the vineyards, establishing a strong visual presence while preserving a connection to the surrounding terrain. Beyond its sculptural presence, the winery reinforces Tokaj’s reputation as both a cultural and viticultural destination.

 

The region’s volcanic soils have supported viticulture for centuries. Villages developed along the valleys, and winemaking took place in cellars cut deep into rhyolite tuff. Since the early 2000s, renewed investment and tourism have brought a fresh wave of innovation. Today, architecture plays a role in this revival, with new facilities enhancing the visitor experience alongside wine production.

The commission for the Sauska Tokaj Winery called for a modern facility centered on the production of dry white and sparkling wines, while also serving as a destination for hospitality and gastronomy. Positioned on the southern slopes of Padi Hill, the site offers sweeping views of significant settlements in the region, requiring a design that would engage with the landscape without overwhelming it.

 

BORD’s design reflects founding architect Péter Bordás’s philosophy of creating structures that feel both present and physically detached from their surroundings. His concept of the ‘untouched-untouchable’ informed the architectural massing — a floating form that engages the eye without disturbing the terrain.

The visible portion of the winery consists of two intersecting, lens-shaped volumes, each 36 meters wide. Elevated above the ground and supported by slender steel columns, these house the visitor-facing functions: a restaurant, bar, and panoramic terrace. The functional spaces for fermentation and storage are located underground, where stable conditions are naturally maintained. The circular fermentation halls position stainless steel tanks concentrically around a central wooden barrel area, creating a clear spatial order.

 

The illusion of levitation is accentuated by the building’s overhangs and the way sunlight shifts across its underside. This floating character turns the structure into a landmark while allowing the surrounding vineyards to remain the primary visual focus.

Visitors arrive via a path integrated into the slope, ensuring the architectural form is encountered in full view upon approach. The entrance is understated, leading into a compact lobby that opens to a skylit corridor and the main visitor spaces. Inside, curved ceilings frame the landscape beyond, narrowing toward the view and guiding attention outward. Stepping onto the terrace, guests are met with expansive views of Tokaj’s vineyards and hills.

 

Interiors, designed by Tihany Design, draw directly from the textures and tones of the wine region. Natural wood, local limestone, and steel details create a warm, tactile palette. This material approach anchors the contemporary architecture in the agricultural and geological context of Tokaj, while offering a refined backdrop for dining and tasting experiences.

Operational areas, including pressing, bottling, and labeling, are arranged in a linear sequence connected to the fermentation spaces. A service tunnel along the building’s axis facilitates movement of grapes and finished wine, while housing the necessary mechanical systems. The cellar’s cool, metallic surfaces contrast with the hospitality areas above, underscoring the dual identity of the building as both an industrial and cultural facility.

Those precision-machined knurled metal buttons deserve special mention. These aren’t just functional controls but genuine jewelry-quality details.

JackRabbit Micro Hauler line has two fully-electric bikes for cargo hauling and riding two people

There is an overwhelming abundance of random e-bikes on the market, and as JackRabbit CEO Jason Kenagy rightly points out, “People don’t need or want just another clunky bike.” What riders truly appreciate and desire are electric bikes that are lightweight, easy to maintain, and built to handle everyday routines, whether they’re commuting solo, riding with a partner, or hauling cargo.

JackRabbits, already known for its foldable, lightweight e-bikes, has taken a leaf out of the general requirements and created the MG Platform. This entirely new category of rides, dubbed Micro Haulers, is made to fold flat, focus on utility, and exist with one clear goal of getting sh*t done.

The new micro hauler e-bike category comprises two models at the time of writing. The first model features a banana saddle for two people, while the second is a rugged terrain handler that doubles as a cargo hauler. With the size of an ordinary e-bike, and the charisma to haul a passenger or cargo, these bikes are called MG Doble and MG Renegade, respectively.

JackRabbit has some interesting bikes designed for zipping across town or campus, but this time, with the MG Doble, it is giving you the option to allow a partner to hop onto the bike with you. The bike with a two-person banana seat is designed with a 749-watt rear-hub motor, which can take a couple of riders up to 20 mph through the city lanes. The frame houses a two-pack battery system that gives the MG Doble a 48-mile range on a single charge.

For the speed frenzy, the Micro Hauler has an interesting unlockable 24 mph Off-Road Mode with mullet wheel design, and the company says it is “designed to get sh*t done on your own, or with a passenger.” It rides on a set of 20-inch wheels, weighs only 52 lbs, and can fold flat to fit in the boot of the car or roll on to the subway: it can fold from 64.5 x 29.5 x 43.5 inches down to 52 x 8.75 x 22.25 inches. The MG Doble’s color display on the Highrise handlebars and 10 attach points make it ready for everything you may need it for.

MG Renegade

Second on the charts obviously is the MG Renegade, which is lightweight, foldable, and convenient like the MG Doble, and shares a similar color screen and the low-maintenance hydraulic brakes. What it really adds to its humble sibling is the power to take the rider and the hauling cargo up hill and also off-road. The bike is way lighter, only 44 lbs out of the box, but the large frame bike does not compromise on the off-road speed of 24 mph, tread tires, and the equivalent 48+ mile range as the Doble. The MG Renegade features 10 mounting points on the monocoque aluminium alloy frame to attach accessories like a cargo basket; whether it is towing a trailer full of camping gear, running errands, or carrying groceries, the Renegade is designed for it all, but sadly has seating for one only. Both bikes start at $2,499.99 and are available in silver.

Flos Updates Philippe Starck’s Bon Jour Unplugged Lamp

It’s the 10th anniversary of Philippe Starck’s Bon Jour Unplugged, a cordless rechargeable lamp designed for Flos.

To celebrate, the brand is updating the lamp with new colorways, along with some technology that the 2015 model lacked: You can now change the color temperature of the LEDs ( from a warm 2200K to a cool 3000K), the dimming percentages have been made more precise (3%, 30%, 70%, 100%), and the lamp now features wireless charging in addition to the USB-C charging.

Another small change: Previously the lamp could be purchased bare, without a shade, looking like a Starckian barbell.

Now the transparent shade comes standard. You can also choose it in different hues, or opt for fabric or rattan shades.

The lamp runs $330.

Choo Choo the Seahorse: When Industrial Design Meets Baby Products

Brooklyn-based designer Scott Henderson has a knack for creating products that become household staples. The Moby Spout Cover he designed for Skip Hop in 2008 is one of the best-selling baby items of all time, and his early work on OXO Kitchen Tools helped establish that brand’s ergonomic DNA. (ed. note: he also led the jury for the 2024 Core77 Design Awards Lifestyle Accessories category) Now he’s back in the baby space with Choo Choo the Seahorse, a teething toy that tackles several design problems at once.

Anyone who’s spent time around teething babies knows the frustrations: dropped toys that need constant washing, products that don’t actually soothe effectively, and the ongoing search for something that keeps both baby and parent sane.

Henderson’s solution addresses these pain points systematically. The seahorse features an integrated handle that’s part of the overall form rather than an add-on appendage—reducing inevitable drops. The pacifier-shaped face encourages chewing away from the wide, stable base, while the “mane” functions as a built-in gum massager with sculpted silicone prongs.

What’s particularly clever is the prehensile tail that wraps around objects or hangs for drying after washing. The toy includes hard and soft chew zones, tactile textures throughout, and a gentle squeaker that won’t drive parents to distraction. The whole thing is made from food-grade silicone that’s hypoallergenic, odor-free, and fade resistant.

Henderson’s choice of a seahorse isn’t arbitrary. “The ocean has an ancient, inherent calming effect—it’s something we feel before we understand,” he says. The character features a closed, peaceful eye meant to signal emotional safety, a thoughtful detail you don’t usually see in mass market products.

This will be the first offering from Henderson’s new brand Jay Street Baby. The teether will launch with an original storybook, written and illustrated by Henderson, called “Choo Choo the Seahorse’s Big Adventure,” creating a broader narrative world around the character. Henderson is positioning Choo Choo, and future products, as part of a character-driven IP franchise, with plans for additional books, animated shorts, and more products in the pipeline.

It’s an interesting approach that borrows from entertainment industry playbooks. Rather than just designing isolated products, Henderson is building a world around his characters that could extend across multiple media formats. Whether parents will embrace this kind of brand universe around baby products remains to be seen.
