SSD the size of SIM card is a game changer for handhelds and eventually smartphones

Given the speeds of MicroSD cards (around 985 MB/s) and their susceptibility to go corrupt just when you need them the most, major smartphone manufacturers have stopped providing dedicated slots on their devices to insert one. On the other end of the spectrum, there are M.2 storage sticks for your PCs, but they can be bulky to carry around. A Shenzhen-based company has seemingly come up with a hardware innovation to overcome this issue in both digital worlds – your smartphone and PC.

Biwin, a digital storage technology veteran, has come up with an innovative data format hardware called Mini SSD that is just the size of a microSD card. Don’t let the small size of 15.0mm × 17.0mm × 1.4mm let you believe there is any compromise on the data transfer speeds. The storage solution has read speeds of 3,700 MB/s and 3,400 MB/s for write speeds, respectively. In their press release, Biwin claims that the Mini SSD offers “a new innovative solution for industries that require high speed, high performance, and high durability storage to handle mission-critical workloads at scale.”

This storage drive, the size of a SIM card, is significantly smaller than a typical M.2 2230 drive, used in most portable PCs. Those fast r/w speeds are possible courtesy of the PCIe 4×2 interface, which is pretty close to what an M.2 SSD can achieve. Technology-wise, this is possible via the advanced LGA (Land Grid Array) packaging, which has integrated controller and flash memory modules. This saves space and explains the tiny frame of the innovative hardware. The Mini SSD is built to last in any kind of conditions with an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, along with advanced thermal management. It has also been tested for accidental falls from a height of three meters.

The catch here is that the Biwin Mini SSD is a brand-new standard that manufacturers will have to adopt to have any chance of long-term success. Two major Chinese gaming portables have already shown trust in the technology with announcements at ChinaJoy week regarding their upcoming gadgets. The GPD Strix Halo handheld and the OneNotebook OneXPLayer Super X Hybrid laptop/tablet will have this new standard. The Mini SSD will come in 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities for now. It’ll be interesting to see how the drive handles the real-life testing loads and temperatures on these two devices. If it does well, there is a strong case that other handheld makers, in particular, would fancy loading this innovative SSD on their future devices.

Biwin has not yet revealed the pricing or the wider market availability of the hardware. If you were already thinking this could be a great hardware addition for your flagship smartphones, then you’ll have to hold your horses, as the tech has to prove its mettle before becoming the new phone memory storage standard.

Sharpie Expands Range of Colors, Again

When Sharpie markers first came on the market in 1964, you could have them in whatever color you wanted, as long as that color was black. The marker was aimed at office workers, industrial workers and retailers, as it could write on anything from paper to glass and industrial materials. Interestingly, it became the go-to writing implement for celebrities signing autographs; it worked equally well on glossy photorgraphs, clothing, and bare skin.

It wasn’t until the 1980s that Sharpie started adding colors, like red and blue. Now you can get the alcohol-based markers in dozens of colors.

But they never did target professionals and move into Copic’s neighborhood, and if you’re a classically-trained industrial designer, the only Sharpies you own are for marking up prototypes or labeling samples.

Instead Sharpie’s gone in the opposite direction, leaning into the craft market with their new line of Creative Markers. These ditch the alcohol for a water-based acrylic ink with a paint-like consistency. They don’t bleed, they’re a bit more blendable, and they can be used to write on materials as diverse as ceramics, rocks and metals.

Those launched late last year, and were apparently a hit; the company has now followed up with a line of Creative Markers in Earth Tones flavors.

The company says markers in their Creative line don’t need to be shaken up and primed, but that you do need to store them horizontally.

Meet Your New Robotic Golf Caddie

Golf carts are fine if you’re driving around a resort course, but for serious golfers who prefer to walk, lugging equipment remains a necessary evil. Push carts help, but you’re still tethered to a wheeled contraption that needs constant attention. Enter the iXi golf trolley, which takes the logical next step: making the thing follow you around automatically.

Designed by Joachim Froment and the team at Futurewave, the iXi Golf Trolley uses AI to track players and position itself intelligently on the course. The idea is to replicate having a personal caddie without the $100-per-round (or more) fee. The trolley follows seamlessly, staying out of your way during shots while keeping your clubs within easy reach.

The engineering is impressive. The lightweight aluminum frame uses reinforced custom extrusions and die-cast junctions, designed to maximize durability versus weight. Also clever is the patented “iXi latch” one-click folding system—addressing the storage headache that plagues most golf equipment.

Beyond just hauling clubs, the iXi incorporates swing analysis and performance tracking. The autonomous movement is the real draw here, promising to eliminate the mental bandwidth spent managing equipment so players can focus entirely on their shots.

The design language is clean and modern, avoiding the utilitarian aesthetic of most golf carts. That matters in a sport where equipment often serves as much as status symbol as tool. The compact form factor should help with course acceptance—many clubs are particular about what wheeled equipment they allow.

After successful showcases at CES and the PGA Show, plus a crowdfunding campaign that netted over 250 pre-orders, the iXi appears to have found its market. The Core77 Design Awards judges agreed, awarding it both the Professional Winner in Sports & Outdoor and the overall Editor’s Choice Best in Show.

At this point, the real test will be real-world performance. Golf courses present challenging terrain, weather conditions, and the inevitable sand traps and water hazards that could confuse autonomous systems. But if Futurewave can deliver on the promise of truly hands-free golf equipment transport, they may have solved one of the sport’s most persistent annoyances.

The iXi represents the kind of thoughtful technology integration that enhances rather than complicates an experience—assuming the AI works as advertised when it hits the course.

A New, Disruptive Consumer Drone: The Antigravity A1

“The drone industry has hit a ceiling,” writes Antigravity, a Chinese startup. “Specs keep improving on paper, yet the experience stays the same. Most drones fly higher or longer without addressing the real pain points for everyday users.” To that end, Antigravity has designed a video-capturing drone that can do what others can’t—and which lowers the barrier to entry.

The company is a spin-off from action camera manufacturer Insta360, and they’ve tapped their parent company’s tech to develop their A1 drone. It has 360 cameras top and bottom, and uses software to conceal the drone’s parts from view. It captures a completely spherical image, 360 degrees in all directions, in 8K.

The A1 is also easy to fly, via a single motion-based joystick and a pair of goggles; the company says they’ve designed “an intuitive flying experience everyone can master,” allowing for “cinematic 360 drone shots anyone can capture.” This will be disruptive. FPV drones have always required training, practice and mastery. That barrier allows the skilled to work as camera operators, whether it’s capturing action footage or conducting aerial inspections of industrial facilities.

The A1 removes that barrier, which will be good for the DIY-minded and companies seeking to save money, and terrible news for well-paid drone pilots. Capturing a complicated action sequence using a conventional drone camera takes a lot of skill, with operators concentrating on both flying and keeping the gimbal on target. With the A1’s spherical capture (and built-in obstacle avoidance), the operator only needs to focus on flight, and the director can simply choose what appears on-screen in the editing room.

The other, perhaps more significant market for the A1 is the everyday person who may have no interest in drones. A lot of people dream of having the ability of flight. The A1 offers that experience, providing an eagle-eye view without the learning curve.

The goggles track the wearer’s head motion; look up or down, or side to side, and your view changes accordingly.

The goggles themselves are rather interesting: One of the lenses is covered with an outward-facing screen, so someone looking at you can see what you’re seeing.

Included filters provide a number of Christopher-Nolan-esque effects.

At just 249g, it skirts the license required of drones weighing 250g and up. The drone takes off and lands automatically upon a single button-press. If it loses signal or starts to run out of battery life, it automatically returns to its take-off point. And to prevent misuse, the drone is equipped with a payload-detecting technology; it will refuse to fly if anything is attached to it.

Here’s the A1’s promise:

The A1 is scheduled to launch in January of 2026. The price hasn’t been announced, but industry watchers are predicting it will come in around $1,300.

These ATMs Give Receipts You Can Use as Rolling Papers

Here’s an unusual business: A Hawaii-based company called Rolly Receipts offers to stock your business, free of charge, with an ATM that they maintain. The kicker is that the machine gives “smokable receipts” that can be used as rolling papers:

Most receipt paper contains BPA. But Rolly Receipts, founded by chemist Marcus Todd Brisco, uses a non-toxic paper that they say has been lab-tested and deemed safe to smoke. Brisco’s motivation to create the receipts was apparently environmental.

The ATMs were distributed in at least eight states in 2022.

In a strange twist, while looking this story up I also found that company founder Brisco was ordered to pay $2 million by a Texas court in 2024, for his involvement in a $146 million Ponzi scheme (apparently unrelated to the ATM company).

The use of brass adds a warm, sophisticated touch that pairs well with modern interiors, while also reflecting light in a soft, inviting way. The design is minimal yet expressive, making it suitable for both statement pieces in grand lobbies and subtle accents in cozy living rooms.

Bloome is as functional as it is artistic. It is engineered to provide ambient lighting that enhances the mood of a space without overwhelming it. “How I learned to stop worrying about awards and love making real impact”

A few years ago, my co-founder Glenn Taylor and I made a decision that felt pretty radical and risky at the time. We stopped entering design awards.

Not because we couldn’t win them – we had our share of hunks of metal gathering dust. We stopped because we finally did the maths.

Our annual award submissions were consuming countless hours of creative time,  plus thousands of pounds in entry fees that, cumulatively, could fund months of meaningful pro bono work.

So we decided to use that time and money for exactly that. Good Deeds was born.

In a nutshell, Good Deeds is our structured approach to pro bono work. We select meaningful community projects that create long-term partnerships, rather than one-off favours, and commit to causes where design can make a genuine difference.

Our studio HQ happens to be in Leicester. That doesn’t matter to our clients – which include national and global brands like Canon, Baker Hughes, Morrisons and Centrica – but for our people it’s where they live and work. It’s their community.

In desperately seeking validation from judges we’d likely never meet, we were missing opportunities to strengthen that community in a meaningful, mutually beneficial way.

With recent revelations about fabricated case studies and dubious effectiveness stats at major awards, it’s time our industry stopped pretending this emperor has clothes.

The harsh truth about awards ROI

Let’s be blunt – when did you last win new business because of an award? When did that trophy genuinely help you attract better talent, or solve a client’s problem?

Awards give you a moment of industry backslapping, some LinkedIn posts, and take up shelf space. For the most part, that’s it.

But we didn’t just stop doing awards – we asked ourselves what would actually deliver the networking, credibility, and team motivation that awards promise but never deliver, while using our skills for a good cause. The answer was right on our doorstep.

“Let’s be blunt – when did you last win new business because of an award?”

Our Good Deeds initiative delivers genuine new business connections, enhanced tender responses that actually win work, and staff who contribute their own time because they’re genuinely invested. And we see measurable returns that no trophy ever provided.

This project showcases our diverse capabilities better than any award submission, from visual identity to compelling brand storytelling, community engagement to project management at scale.

Don’t be a tourist in your own city

Another of our long-running Good Deeds collaborations has been with Leicester’s oldest live performance venue, The Y Theatre. Linked to the YMCA, it plays a commendable role in tackling youth homelessness – an issue close to Glenn’s heart in particular.

We have a few criteria that help us choose our next Good Deeds project.

Can we solve a genuine design problem? Will this raise awareness for something important?

Do our team members have personal connections that drive authentic investment? And can we build something long-term, rather than completing another project and moving on?

As an employee-owned trust, we make our Good Deeds selection process as democratic as we can to ensure team members get a fair chance to champion causes of their own. When everyone has skin in the game, the work gets better, and the commitment runs deeper.

This isn’t just about being nice. Unlike studios that treat location as irrelevant, we’ve learned that being genuinely embedded somewhere gives you advantages that place-agnostic competitors simply cannot access.

The hard question your studio needs to answer

Awards validate work that’s already done. Our Good Deeds initiative creates work worth doing.

So ask yourself this – which is a better use of your time and money, when it comes to building a stronger studio in the years and decades to come?

We’re not anti-awards per se. If they work for your business model, fine.

But if you’re spending creative time and real budget on industry navel-gazing, while your local creative community struggles for investment, perhaps it’s time to question your choices.

We think every studio leader should ask – are you just chasing the approval of your peers, or real business advantage?

Because after six years of redirecting our awards budget into community partnerships, I’m pretty sure which one pays better dividends for us.
