Gretna Green says “I do” to Squad’s new brand identity

Squad is repositioning Gretna Green as an experiential visitor destination with appeal beyond run-a-way weddings.

The Scottish border village has been famous since 1754, when English people started eloping to its forge to get married by the blacksmith over an anvil. This was because young couples could bypass England’s stricter marriage laws, which demanded parental consent for those under age.

Gretna Green’s fame has since been fuelled by its many mentions in films and TV shows, from Downton Abbey and Bridgerton to Coronation Street and unforgettable 1980s sitcom You Rang, M’Lord?.

Despite the UK’s declining marriage rate, the village still facilitates nearly 4,000 ceremonies a year, and in peak season can get through eight a day.

But David Barraclough, creative partner at Squad, explains that changing attitudes to marriage are not “the driving factor” behind the new look.

“The opportunity is bigger than that – to develop the site as a retail offer and visitor attraction,” he says.

While Gretna Green is the name of the ancient village, it is also the name of the business which owns many of the village’s key properties, including the Old Blacksmith’s Shop and two hotels.

Five generations of the Houston Family have run the Gretna Green business since 1885, and it’s now under the leadership of John Holliday, who joined as executive chair in 2023. Squad’s work is part of an £8 million investment to rethink the entire visitor experience. The hope is that visitors will come to eat, drink, stay and explore, as well as marry.

“The vision is to develop a broader offer, anchored in love, passion and escape,” says Barraclough. “You might return for anniversaries; you might propose there.”

“We’re trying to reimagine the history we’ve got and turn it into a 21st Century destination,” says Oliver Rolfe, COO of Gretna Green. “We want to modernise the brand and the site for future generations.”

There was a need to refurbish some parts of the site, and the team wanted to carry out that renovation work with a clearer idea of what the brand stands for.

“Our objective is to make people happy. There’s an experiential element to that,” Rolfe explains. “Stay in a hotel, go to the shops, sit in a café – we need to root all that in who we are and what our brand is.”

Even the toilets have been redesigned with the new brand in mind, with 400 years of stories depicted on the walls, and black metal lighting to reference its forge-based fame.

Squad, which is based in Manchester and London, first turned their attention to the commercial offer, naming the new café, Runaways, consolidating the number of shops, and renaming and redesigning the restaurant, which is due to open early next year.

Squad then repositioned Gretna Green with a new narrative – the little village on the Scottish border with a big story of love and escape to share with the world.

Squad’s visual identity is underpinned by the pillars of passionate love, fiery craft and Scottish hospitality embedded in four centuries of rebellious romantic history, and delivered with a contemporary spin, according to Barraclough.

The positioning is not “sweet and sickly,” he explains, adding that the presence of the Old Blacksmith’s Shop – where fire would have been used to shape metal – creates a “beautiful symmetry” with the notion of fiery passion.

The identity puts a modern twist on the characteristics of a traditional village, marrying tartan and traditional shop signs with the modern revival of craft and local produce, which is sold on site.

There was plenty of existing vernacular typography to draw on, like the eclectic mix of signage, some of which is hand-painted onto the many anvils around the site.

“We’ve tried to take that idiosyncratic historic feel and bring it up to date,” Barraclough says. “Not ruthless consistency, but a look that flexes out.”

Location-wise, Gretna Green is just off the M6 and already gets plenty of coach parties stopping by. The aim is to also appeal to more families in cars, so a play area is being developed, which Squad will also name and brand.

The ambition is that with the repositioning, refurbishments of existing offers, and introduction of new attractions, more people will come, and they will stay longer.

The Shir-Dal Retreat is an architectural concept by Iranian architect Mohamad Rasoul Moosapour, envisioned for a densely forested site. Intended not as a permanent residence but as a temporary refuge, the structure serves as a place for pause, shaped as a floating, open platform for reflection within a natural landscape.

 

The spatial concept eliminates the boundary between interior and exterior. Moosapour’s design frames a semi-open structure whose walls, roofs, and floors each articulate distinct functions, yet exist in continuous exchange with the environment. Rather than organizing space through enclosure, the project opens itself to the elements, allowing the surroundings to co-define the experience.

 

The geometry is neither fixed nor ornamental. Floors extend into the landscape, a roof plane angles toward the canopy, and the minimal partitions divide the spaces without enclosing them. These elements appear as differentiated yet responsive forms, joined through a logic of interrelation rather than hierarchy.

At the heart of Shir-Dal is a wooden platform that architect Mohamad Rasoul Moosapour designs to detach from the main structure and float freely on water. More than a technical gesture, this mobility introduces a ritualistic dimension to the experience. Movement becomes a medium for awareness, turning departure and return into a contemplative rhythm. The retreat thus cultivates both physical and psychological transitions, inviting users to disengage from habitual patterns and engage more fully with the present.

 

Moosapour approaches this floating element as an extension of the retreat’s flexible spatial logic, along with its ambition to inspire inner stillness.

Designing the Shir-Dal Retreat, Mohamad Rasoul Moosapou develops each architectural component with a degree of autonomy. While floor slabs, roof planes, and partitions function like organs with specific roles, they together form a cohesive, animate body. This organism-like quality is central to Moosapour’s vision for the Shir-Dal Retreat.

 

By forgoing static composition in favor of responsive articulation, the project offers an alternative model of spatial logic centered on rhythm and attunement. In this sense, the retreat draws attention away from built form and toward lived experience.

 

Throughout the design, the designer investigates architecture as a threshold, rather than a definitive structure. This framing situates Shir-Dal between presence and absence, between shelter and exposure, between stillness and movement.

Walking through Jinan’s streets, you might do a double-take when you spot what looks like the world’s largest soap bubble floating above the cityscape. This isn’t some art installation gone rogue; it’s the smartest construction solution we’ve seen in years. China Energy Construction Group and Licheng Urban Development Group have wrapped their entire Honglou 1905 project in a 20,000-square-meter inflatable dome that stretches 50 meters into the sky, creating what they’re calling the world’s largest construction enclosure.

The USP lies in turning construction sites from neighborhood nightmares into practically invisible operations. Anyone who’s lived near a major building project knows the drill: months of dust settling on everything, jackhammers starting at dawn, and that persistent construction smell that somehow gets into your apartment. Apiar Gen 1.0 features 3D printed textured, web-like dial inside solid titanium casing

Most of the design world is grappling, often in random ways, with 3D printing: its convenience and the manufacturing swiftness. Watchmaking is no stranger to the adaptation of this new form of manufacturing. In a few cases already, there have been watchmakers who have included the nuance of printing in their watch parts. Something British watchmaker Apiar chooses to do differently. It uses additive manufacturing to design its new Gen1.0 watches.

Apiar Gen1.0 is therefore a stunning example of what’s possible with 3D printing, since the watches are made in a process where metal objects are formed by adding materials, rather than carving, cutting, and stripping them away. The use of additive watch manufacturing technique provides these 3D printed watches textured, web-like dial, which wouldn’t be possible otherwise with traditional manufacturing.

The 3D printed Gen1.0 is part of the new core Gen1.0 range from the British manufacturer, and is available in Dawn and Dusk dial options, with two band color variants: Dove and Orion Gray to choose from. Dawn is basically a refined brushed gold tone, designed to, as the name suggests, catch light across its every ridge. The Dusk, on the other hand, is a brushed blue-grey, inspired by blueprint drawings and complements the titanium construction. The watch, in either option, features an integrated additively manufactured titanium dial that flaunts an anodized aluminum color plate. Case, dial, and lugs are all made from grade 23 titanium, making it an extremely lightweight and robust watch.

According to the information put out on the website, Apex has printed the titanium cases using laser powder bed fusion. This is a process ideally used in rockets and high-performance cars, now it makes way into haute horology, and what’s achieved out of it is incredibly interesting to say the least. The generative design-inspired aesthetics of the watch dial are well complemented by geometric lug design and precision engineering, which is reflected in every bit of the watch.

Of course, the simple watch, with nickel-coated hour and minute hands, looks distinct because of the two different color skeletonized dials, which are textured in a web-like interface and form an integral part of the round case. But it’s also the watch’s bezel that stands out for a different reason. Perhaps it’s the only part on the watch case, which is CNC machined and not made through additive manufacturing. The distinctive Apiar Gen1.0 features a 39mm case, designed to fit comfortably on nearly all wrist sizes. It is powered by an automatic La Joux-Perret movement, offering a 68-hour power reserve. With most components made in the UK and final assembly also taking place there, the Gen1.0 is priced at £2,250.
