WINT design lab co-creates lamp that changes brightness by pressing the stretchable textile

WINT Design Lab and the Fraunhofer IZM team up to produce a lamp that can change its brightness as the user presses onto the surface’s stretchable textile. Forming part of the research Soft Interfaces, the touch-sensitive light accessory contains a liquid metal called Galinstan embedded into the fabric. Here, the metal flows through pathways inside the textile, so when users stretch the fabric, these paths change shape, and the system reads the movement and adjusts the temperature and brightness of the lamp with stretchable textile.

 

The research team used Liquid Metal Dispensing technology to place the metal inside fabric. They note that this kind of process has not been used in a product before. The team – which includes Lukas Werft and Christian Dils from Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM, as well as Robin Hoske and Felix Rasehorn from WINT Design Lab – spent one year developing the manufacturing method before they were able to produce a touch-sensitive lamp that uses liquid metal and stretchable textile to operate.

For the lamp, it is Case Studies, a Berlin knit design studio, that created the stretchable textile and other materials that WINT Design Lab and the Fraunhofer IZM used. The design studio made custom yarns for the project, making the fabric with alternating knit patterns to mark touch areas. In this way, the different surface textures help users feel the interactive zones. The textile disc is measured as a round screen, while the fabric sits inside a frame that keeps it stretched tight. The frame holds the fabric at the correct tension for touch sensing. There are four touch areas that control different light settings. 

 

Warm light makes the fabric look like sunset colors, and the cool light makes the fabric look like morning light colors. Even the fabric color changes with the light temperature. The Fraunhofer team experimented with different fabric patterns by testing various textile structures to find the best sensing ability. The final prototype uses new manufacturing methods for liquid metal placement. The base of the lamp with stretchable textile contains all the electronic parts, from the cooling systems that keep the liquid metal at the correct temperature to the driver circuits that control the light output. The textile screen blocks direct light from the user’s eyes, allowing the reflected light to fill the room space. Then, the round disc position spreads the light evenly.

Applications from car interior controls to Home textile

 

The teams say that the liquid metal tracks work better than conductive yarn sensors because the metal maintains electrical connection when fabric stretches. It is because of this that the system responds to gentle touch pressure. The fabric can still be washed without damaging the metal pathways. The teams see the technology being applied to different uses, including car interior controls. Home textiles could also become interactive surfaces, medical products could use the touch sensing, and HiFi systems could control volume and settings through fabric touch.

 

The screenless control method uses body movement instead of visual interfaces, so users feel the fabric response through their fingers. This creates a direct connection between user action and device response. The one-year collaboration between WINT Design Lab and the Fraunhofer IZM produced one working prototype lamp with stretchable textile and liquid metal. During this time, the teams also created new methods for putting liquid metal into knitted fabric. The project shows how textile materials can replace electronic touch screens, with the fabric interface using less energy than digital displays. So far, more tests are underway for the research teams’ series.

Habity Bedside Clock switches to an e-paper display to reduce users’ screentime and their exposure to the devices’ blue light filter. A compact gadget, it operates without a Wi-Fi connection or mobile apps, and users control all functions directly through the clock interface. The clock contains multiple wake-up tone options that gradually increase in volume. Sleep sound functions play throughout night hours to support rest periods, and there’s even a wind-down experience that activates before bedtime to signal offline time.

 

The device uses e-paper display technology that produces zero blue light emission, so this technology maintains visibility while avoiding blue light that disrupts circadian rhythms. It also consumes power only when changing information on screen. The display shows time, alarm settings, and function status, letting users read information in low-light conditions without additional illumination that can hurt their eyes. The e-paper screen of the Habity Bedside Clock remains visible during day and night hours and regardless of the lighting conditions.

Blue-light-filter-free Clock that doubles as nightlight

 

The time teller connects to existing smart home lighting systems in bedrooms, so it can synchronize with smart bulbs and lighting fixtures through wireless protocols. Users can even program a gradual light increase before alarm activation. The Habity Bedside Clock with e-paper display also comes with a sunrise simulation function, which allows the lights to fade from zero brightness to full illumination over a programmed time period. This is a feature tailored for limited natural light, such as the one experienced in winter seasons. 

 

The gradual lighting change occurs before the alarm rings. The clock also doubles as a nightlight so users waking up at night can still faintly see their surroundings. They can activate the light manually or program automatic activation, and the nightlight uses a warm color temperature that reduces impact on sleep patterns. Brightness levels adjust through controls, with the light turning off automatically after preset time periods. The device is powered by USB-C, and it also has a built-in backup battery that can last between 12 and 24 hours. At the present time, the campaign is set to launch in September 2025; during then, the design team is expected to announce the delivery date.

asymmetric roof tops prefabricated holiday home by team v architecture on dutch island

TEAM V architecture completes Simmerhûs Island Home 

 

 

On the Dutch island of Terschelling, Team V Architecture has completed Simmerhûs, a prefabricated holiday home that maintains a custom, site-specific character. Despite being constructed from a standardized, off-site timber-frame, which was transported on just three lorries and assembled on-site within three days, the house uses its playfully asymmetrical roof to blend prefabrication and sustainable construction with a home that is intimately connected to its surroundings. Eight solar panels, colour-matched to the ceramic roof tiles, are discreetly integrated into the roof, giving the house an A++ energy label.

 

‘Nothing is standard in this home,’ says Do Janne Vermeulen, co-founder and director of Team V Architecture.

ASYMMETRIC ROOF FOR PLAYFUL EFFECT

 

The compact 75m² holiday home by Team V Architecture Studio is defined by its subtle, yet striking asymmetry, leading to a highly efficient structure. The roof, made of large, flat, rust-colored ceramic tiles, each hand-glazed by Royal Tichelaar, is unexpectedly rotated by five degrees in relation to the floor plan. This playful effect continues throughout the interior, which balances functionality with a serene, minimalist Japanese aesthetic. Finished with wild pine veneer and ash, the interior design by Kranen/Gille offers varied sightlines and creative perspectives of the home.

PREFABRICATED TIMBER CONSTRUCTION WITH HIGH ENERGY EFFICIENCY

 

Built by contractor Vreeker B.V., the home combines timber construction with full insulation, triple-glazed windows, solar panels with power storage, a heat pump, and a rainwater system that supplies purified water to both house and garden. On the church-facing side, the gutter line runs parallel to the ridge, creating a varying overhang, while on the opposite side it diverges, producing a sloping roof edge.

 

Commissioned by Dutch cultural entrepreneur Anne van der Zwaag, the home is furnished with art and design from her own collection and serves as a unique getaway available for vacation rentals. Located in a culturally and historically sensitive area, Simmerhûs respects its surroundings through its modest size, closed street-facing façade, and natural tones. From design to construction, the local community was actively involved, transforming the house into a living part of Terschelling’s social and ecological landscape. The community continues to care for the home and its garden, reinforcing its role as a shared, sustainable, and site-specific asset.

DUET concept is a hybrid headphone and speaker in one

Imagine never having to choose between your headphones and your speaker again. DUET is a groundbreaking audio device concept that blends private listening, shared speaker playback, and spatial audio into a single, easy-to-use product. This hybrid approach means you can switch effortlessly between listening modes, whether you’re on the move, relaxing at home, or hosting friends. DUET is designed to simplify your audio setup, save you money, and ensure your music is always with you, wherever you go.

The inspiration behind DUET came from the everyday hassle of toggling between headphones and speakers. As a college student constantly surrounded by music, the creator found it frustrating to keep removing headphones whenever moving from outside to inside or from one room to another. The music never followed, and constantly switching devices was inconvenient. This sparked the idea for DUET, a device that could fluidly transition between personal and shared listening, letting music move with you.

At the core of DUET’s innovation are its mini bone conduction speakers. Unlike typical speakers that rely on pushing air, bone conduction speakers transmit vibrations directly through surfaces, turning them into amplifiers. This technology allows DUET to remain compact while still delivering impressive sound quality. The headphone ear chambers are designed with thin walls and scattered holes to dampen the bone conduction effect and keep audio private. When switched to speaker mode, the mini speakers twist and lock into a thicker, hollow housing, which boosts volume for shared listening. The friction fit ensures the speakers stay in place, making the transition between modes smooth and secure.

The design journey for DUET was as unique as the product itself. After identifying the need, the creator spent countless hours sketching different forms, drawing inspiration from classic retro headphones for a bold, distinctive look. Once the core shape and style were nailed down, 3D modeling in Rhino helped refine proportions and make sure the design would be manufacturable. Visualization tools like KeyShot helped finalize color and material choices. Prototyping was all hands-on as he used components from a PocketTunes bone conduction speaker. He 3D printed and tested various versions of the ear chambers and speaker housing, adjusting infill and tolerances to perfect both the look and sound.

What truly sets DUET apart from other audio products is its versatility. Most devices force users to pick between headphones for solo listening or speakers for group enjoyment. DUET brings both together, offering three listening modes: private, speaker, and omnidirectional spatial audio. Its bone conduction technology means the surface the speaker rests on can dictate volume and sound character, making DUET adaptable to any environment. Beyond its technical features, DUET’s design language is bold and expressive, standing out from today’s sea of minimal audio gadgets.

Looking ahead, the next step for DUET is to bring together a team of engineers and audio experts to refine the product and prepare it for market. According to several sources familiar with the matter, Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia has been selected to serve as the government’s first Chief Design Officer.

 

The National Design Studio will operate within the White House Office of the Chief of Staff and is scheduled to run for three years. Gebbia will coordinate with federal agencies, recruit design experts, and provide guidance on standardizing design practices to reduce duplication and improve efficiency.

What would your monograph be called?

Saddle up, and ride your pony. The title of a David Christie track from 1982, the year I left school.

It’s a metaphor for taking action and moving forward in life. I am a firm believer in taking control of life, rather than it taking control of you. Great design often means making brave choices and not being afraid to move forward.

I am also a lifelong horse lover with four ponies of my own, so it’s more than a metaphor for me!

What recent design work made you a bit jealous?

I love this Heinz brand campaign by Wieden + Kennedy. I am a big fan of their work, often controversial, always highly creative.

This campaign is so simple and relies on clever insight that we instinctively know the ads are talking about Heinz without even showing or mentioning the brand.

What’s an unusual place you get inspiration from?

I live in the countryside with a lot of nature on my doorstep. I have always found inspiration for design in the changing of seasons and the rhythm of nature.

I love a trip to the bright lights of London or New York, but nature is awesome.

Name something that is brilliantly designed but overlooked.

Sounds crazy, but I love a good tap. A well-designed tap is a beautiful thing. The ergonomics, the weight, the turn, the touch, even the sound when the water pours.

They all make a big difference to how you experience, say, running a bath after a hard day at work.

What object in your studio best sums up your taste?

That’s Big Ken, a Kenia Palm we have in the studio. We have added a lot of indoor plants, and it’s brought a new dimension to how I feel about the environment.

Every time a team member has a birthday, we buy a new plant. We joke about working in Jumanji, so we might have to stop that initiative soon!

What feedback felt brutal at the time, but turned out to be useful?

We had a non-executive when we first started The Collaborators who told us that we should stop treating the money in the bank as our own and think of it as business property.

Consequently, we were as poor as church mice for quite some time, but it was great advice and one we have stuck to ever since. Cash is king.

What’s an underappreciated skill that design leaders need?

Empathy and understanding. Life happens when you are least expecting it. Showing compassion when times get difficult for people in your business builds loyalty, respect and a deeper connection between the team.

What keeps you up at night?

I am not much of a worrier. I think that’s been a blessing over the years. Worrying achieves nothing apart from stress. I get excited about ideas and change, and that can certainly keep me awake at night.

What trait is non-negotiable in new hires?

A can-do attitude. Positive people make life so much nicer.

…would appreciate the value of great design, not just the cost.

I think the next decade will be interesting. With AI gathering pace, will clients become more cost-sensitive, or will craftsmanship and the more subtle and insightful qualities that only a ‘real’ designer can bring be more sought after and therefore more valued? Let’s see.
