Folding Landscape Pavilion Turns Architecture Into a Living Lens

Architecture usually frames the landscape around it, but what if it could actually become part of that landscape while letting you reshape both the space and your perspective? Michael Jantzen’s Folding Landscape Pavilion concept explores exactly this idea, creating an interactive structure that blurs the line between building, artwork, and the natural world.

The pavilion starts with a deceptively simple steel frame that holds ten photo-laminated panels, each one hinged and divided diagonally so they can fold and pivot in multiple directions. But here’s where it gets interesting: those panels aren’t just decorative surfaces. They’re high-resolution photographs taken from a single spot in the New Mexico landscape, capturing every possible view, including straight up at the sky and straight down at the ground.

The floor itself is laminated with a photo of the exact ground where the pavilion sits. When everything is folded flat, the structure essentially disappears into its surroundings, creating perfect visual continuity between the photographed landscape and the real thing. It’s like architectural camouflage that actually works.

What makes this concept genuinely exciting is how visitors can physically interact with it. Each panel can be folded out from the frame and then manipulated along its diagonal hinge, creating an almost infinite number of spatial configurations. One moment you’re inside a minimalist cube, the next you’re surrounded by a dynamic sculpture that looks like it’s exploding outward into the landscape.

The real magic happens in the contrast between what’s frozen and what’s alive. Unlike mirrored pavilions that reflect whatever’s happening right now, these photo panels capture a specific moment in time. Jantzen designed the pavilion to be illuminated at night, which adds another layer of contrast between the photographed world and reality. The structure transforms from a landscape camouflage device during the day into a glowing beacon of captured memories after dark.

POLIS concept reimagines urban traffic safety in robot-powered cities

As our cities edge closer to a future where robots move alongside humans, the need for innovative traffic management becomes more urgent. Enter POLIS, a visionary traffic control system designed by Jimin Kim, created to keep urban spaces running smoothly as robots, drones, and humans share the streets. The POLIS project reimagines city safety for the age of intelligent machines, blending advanced technology with urban design to reduce accidents and protect everyone moving through the city.

POLIS is a smart traffic control station intended for robot-saturated cities like the fictional Acropolis. Unlike traditional traffic lights or cameras, POLIS is built to understand and manage the complex interactions between a wide variety of moving entities. These include not just humans and vehicles, but also delivery robots, cleaning bots, industrial machines, drones, and even animals. By mapping and tracking the movement of these different groups, POLIS aims to prevent collisions of all kinds, whether it is a human bumping into a delivery robot or a drone crossing paths with a building.

The heart of the POLIS system is a pair of core components. The first is a primary security unit equipped with advanced SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) sensors. These sensors give POLIS the ability to detect and predict potential accidents before they happen. If an incident does occur, the second component springs into action: a security barricade robot that can quickly deploy physical barriers, blocking off hazardous areas to prevent secondary or even tertiary accidents.

Their coverage extends in concentric circles, with a close, medium, and long detection range, ensuring that every corner of the city is monitored for safety. The Fenix Museum of Migration by MAD has now been open in Rotterdam for several months, establishing itself as an iconic civic landmark along the city’s industrial waterfront. Rising above the historic port district, the museum occupies a restored warehouse once tied to the flow of migrants who departed from Rotterdam for destinations across the world. Now, with newly captured images months after its opening in May 2025, the project can be understood as not just a renovation, but as an active and lived-in landmark shaped by visitors’ reflections and spiraling movement.

 

Everything is in motion — people, time, light, the sea,’ says Ma Yansong.This building invites us to rethink moments of arrival and departure, and to reflect on the reasons we set out in the first place.’ That sense of continuity between past and present is what connects the sculptural building to its cultural and urban context. At the heart of the Fenix Museum of Migration in Rotterdam, MAD’s tornado-shaped staircase has emerged as the defining element. Two spirals rise independently, crossing and separating before joining at platforms that overlook the coastal Dutch city.

 

The team at MAD compares the project to similar occupiable monuments such as Heatherwick Studio’s now-iconic Vessel or the Little Island along New York’s Hudson River:These projects, like the tornado, operate at a similar scale and share a strong commitment to experiential design.’

 

But where Vessel is often described as an Escher-like stair maze or built for spectacle, and Little Island as a floating garden for urban escape, the tornado in Fenix takes a different approach. It is less about retreat or display and more about convergence.

MAD’s Ma Yansong describes the Fenix Museum’s configuration as ‘random yet precise,’ a system designed for fluid movement that creates chance encounters. The result lends a choreography of visitors’ movements, as the layout organizes spontaneous interactions and encourages both individual reflection and collective experience as visitors ascend the spiraling structure.

 

The adaptive reuse of the museum’s warehouse preserves the industrial shell, a memory of the surrounding neighborhood. This warehouse had been restored by Bureau Polderman, while MAD introduced interventions to alter its historic atmosphere. The opening of the central roof floods the interior with daylight to animate both the preserved concrete structure and the new stainless-steel spiral.

 

The shaping and shifting of global politics, geography, culture, and art are largely rooted in these migrations,’ Ma explains.We hope this museum not only commemorates the past or tells stories of hardship, but more importantly, reveals hope and courage — offering inspiration for people today and in the future to look ahead.’

Structurally, the spiraling staircase demonstrates a high level of engineering innovation. Measuring 550 meters in length and rising thirty meters high, it cantilevers outward up to seventeen meters at certain points, achieved through a spatial truss system developed with roller coaster specialists. Its reflective cladding, shaped with CNC technology, captures shifting skies, waterfront activity, and the movement of passersby.

 

The experience of climbing the stairs is never fixed. Perspectives shift with each step, encounters take place at the landings, and the view culminates in the rooftop platform where the city and river unfold as a broad horizon. The architects describe it as both a journey and a gathering place, where movement is transformed into architecture.

 

Inside, the collection includes historical artifacts and contemporary commissions, presented in an open plan that encourages visitors to move fluidly between past and present. Wim Pijbes, President of the Droom en Daad Foundation, emphasizes this universality:At some point in life, people make the decision — whether due to war, poverty, faith, or other reasons — to pack everything they own into one or two suitcases and start over on the other side of the world. What we must do is understand those emotions and give them form.’

Re:Shell Turns Eggshells Into Modular, Biodegradable Bricks

Construction waste has become one of those problems that feels too big to solve. Buildings go up, buildings come down, and mountains of debris pile up in landfills with nowhere else to go. Finding materials that can safely return to nature after their useful life feels like chasing a unicorn, until now.

Re:Shell bricks from Seoul National University flip this whole equation on its head. These modular building blocks are made from discarded eggshells, creating a construction material that’s both practical and completely biodegradable when its time is up.

The genius starts with recognizing that eggshells are everywhere and full of potential. Local bakeries and restaurants generate tons of eggshell waste daily, and these shells happen to be loaded with calcium carbonate, the same stuff that makes cement strong and durable.

The Seoul National University team developed a surprisingly elegant process for turning this waste into building material. They wash, dry, and grind the shells into fine powder, then mix it with natural additives that each serve specific purposes. Red clay adds strength, bran creates a smoother texture, and straw provides flexibility while keeping the weight down.

What makes Re:Shell genuinely clever is its modular, interlocking design that works like sophisticated LEGO blocks for grown-ups. The bricks snap together and come apart easily, making them perfect for temporary installations, changing interior layouts, or even full architectural facades that can be reconfigured as needs evolve.

The versatility goes way beyond just stacking bricks into walls. You can use Re:Shell for household objects, furniture pieces, or decorative elements that adapt to different spaces and functions. This flexibility draws inspiration from traditional Korean design principles, where objects like soban tables and room dividers transform to serve multiple purposes.

The environmental impact is where Re:Shell really shines compared to conventional building materials. When these bricks reach the end of their useful life, they decompose naturally in soil without leaving harmful residues behind. No landfill burden, no toxic runoff, just a clean return to the earth.

This approach feels especially relevant for South Korea, where rapid urbanization and waves of demolitions have created a construction waste crisis. Nearly half of the country’s total waste comes from building projects, overwhelming recycling systems, and filling up disposal sites at an alarming rate.

But the implications stretch far beyond South Korea’s borders. Re:Shell represents a new way of thinking about building materials where circularity isn’t just a buzzword but an actual design principle. The concept could easily adapt to other regions and waste streams, inspiring similar innovations worldwide.

Re:Shell bricks prove that the most innovative solutions often come from looking at waste differently. Instead of seeing eggshells as garbage, this project sees them as the foundation for a more sustainable future in construction. The result is a building material that’s modular, biodegradable, and surprisingly beautiful, offering a glimpse of what architecture could look like when we design with the full lifecycle in mind.

Industrial Design Case Study: A Designey Concrete Firepit with Improved Manufacturability

Sunflower is a twist on the concrete fire pit, designed by Mexican ID firm Shift Studio.

SUNFLOWER is a concrete fire pit with a unique form that proposes a new direction for concrete fire pit fabrication. Currently, concrete fire pits are made using one single large mold to cast the entirety of the product, resulting in heavy voluminous pieces with limited design possibilities that are usually difficult to finish, store, move and transport.

Providing a different view on the usual concrete casting method, Sunflowerpresents a modular (segmented) design, supported by an internal metal frame, where a single smaller concrete casted piece is repeated to create the product’s unique geometry.

Requiring a much smaller mold, each concrete piece can be finished, handled and stored with greater ease, while an interior metal frame allows for the fire pit to be easily assembled on site if necessary.

This particular design allows for new ways of experimentation and customization, enabling play with form and factors such as color, tone, material and finish combinations as well as the fire’s projected light.

The Sunflower’s geometry (as its name implies) takes inspiration from flowers, where each concrete piece, similar to petals, can be easily replaced if damaged or have a unique tone or color adding versatility in its design.

When in use, fire is held at the center by the interior metal frame with light being channeled shinning between the repeated pattern casting a distinctive light shape that resembles a sun.

Reflect is a therapeutic chair to help with anxiety

New York-based furniture designer and architect Tanuvi Hegde is changing the way we think about furniture. Her innovative approach goes beyond aesthetics or comfort, exploring how design can actively support emotional well-being and mindful interaction. With a background in architecture, interiors, and fabrication, Hegde’s work brings together craftsmanship and thoughtful intention in every piece she creates.

Her latest work, Reflect, is part of her collection Exhibit (A): Furniture for the Anxious Being. This collection investigates how furniture can become a tool for emotional support, engaging the senses and fostering a sense of calm. Reflect is more than just a chair. Crafted from warm cherry wood with an oil finish, it features a hand-stitched leather sling seat and a leather seat cushion. But its most distinctive feature is a small steel ball bearing embedded in the armrest. This clever detail invites the user to roll the ball back and forth, creating a subtle vibration and gentle sound that transforms sitting into an interactive, meditative experience.

The craftsmanship is meticulous, yet the design remains approachable and inviting. The interplay between wood, leather, and steel is both beautiful and intentional, creating a dialogue between form and function that feels genuinely contemporary.

Clever Design Solution for a Bathroom with a Large Window, No Room for a Mirror

Massachusetts-based NS Builders works on expensive custom homes. This bathroom space brings a unique challenge: Because of the sink’s location, there’s no way to put a mirror over it without having to cover up the window.

It took a team to make this happen: This was designed by Brooklyn-based architecture firm Of Possible, the cabinets and millwork are by Philadelphia-based Robern and Massachusetts-based Materia Millwork, and NS Builders executed the build.

Teenage Engineering’s Free Mini-Computer Case

Teenage Engineering has launched an unusual initiative called “’25 the Flipped Out Year.” This is a campaign where they run “flipped out offers,” which are unconventional promotions and product releases intended to gauge customers’ perceptions of value; as one example, in June the company offered their flagship OP-1 Field synthesizer with no fixed pricing, beyond a minimum of $1,399 (the unit was originally priced at $2,000 and up). The results of the campaign were never officially announced, but anecdotally, it seems most buyers simply paid the minimum price.

The next “flipped out offer” was even stranger. This month the company released Computer-2, a housing for those seeking to build their own mini-ITX computers. The price listed was $0.

“Computer–2 is a small form factor, mini-ITX computer case, constructed from one sheet of plastic with living hinges and snap hooks. just push-click the motherboard into place—no screws needed.”

“We set a goal to design the cheapest computer case in the world. Lur engineers worked day and night to really push the limits and they went beyond all expectations. They engineered it all the way down to a cost of 0.”

Unsurprisingly, the units “sold” out almost immediately.

Selling products for zero dollars and allowing customers to set their own pricing on others is obviously not a sustainable business strategy. So what is the company doing? I suppose they’re building engagement and/or trying to bring new customers into the fold. Whatever their true intent, they say “new flipped out ’25 offers will be presented during the rest of the year… (or until the world is a little bit more stable).”
