Futuristic Open Book Public Library Transforms Reading into an Immersive Architectural Experience

When the designer envisioned this futuristic public library, the intent was not simply to create a building, but to craft a living, breathing celebration of books. More than a repository of knowledge, this space was imagined as an environment that inspires awe, invites curiosity, and offers tranquility, a true sanctuary for the mind.

The concept takes the instantly recognizable form of an open book, a symbol as timeless as the act of reading itself. This was no accidental metaphor; the open book represents the openness of sharing knowledge, the free flow of ideas, and the boundless possibilities that learning provides. Its sweeping, curved forms mimic the gentle turning of pages in motion, while illuminated lines on the roof suggest written text, creating the illusion that the story comes alive even from a distance.

The library’s ground floor is supported by a bold cantilever concrete system, lending the entire structure a sense of weightlessness and modern elegance. This design choice not only reinforces the futuristic vision but also opens up expansive spaces where readers can move freely, sit comfortably, and lose themselves in their thoughts without distraction. The architecture’s fluid interplay with natural light enriches this openness, wrapping visitors in a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The “pages” of the open book are in fact the different floors of the library. Each is crafted with precision and includes balcony spaces for visitors to step outside, enjoy sweeping views of the city, and breathe in the fresh air, extending the experience of reading beyond four walls. On the ground, outdoor lounge areas with comfortable couches offer a chance to read under natural light or simply relax in the breeze.

The roof continues the poetic metaphor, subtle openings allow daylight to flood into the interior while maintaining the striking exterior aesthetic. In daylight, the form reads like letters inscribed on an enormous book; at night, lighting accents these lines, dramatically highlighting the architecture’s contours.

From the front elevation, the book-like structure takes on a second layer of meaning; its silhouette resembles a tree, a universal emblem of growth, knowledge, and life. This thoughtful layering of symbolism ties the act of learning to organic, ever-expanding growth.

Beneath the raised “pages,” the design creates sheltered spaces for community gatherings, parking, and the main entrance. Visitors arrive at the soothing presence of a large water feature, which sets a calm, reflective tone from the very start.

Even the library’s name is cleverly integrated into the facade, a “bookmark” element emerges from between the architectural pages, reinforcing the theme while functioning as a visual anchor for the building’s identity.

The “spine” of the book, the central vertical stem, serves as the connective heart of the library, linking the auditorium on one side with the library’s reading halls on the other. Elevated bridges cross this central space, allowing visitors to experience the architecture from within as they move between the two wings.

Every decision in this design is deliberate, a way to honor the timelessness of books while embracing modernity. It is a building that wears its symbolism openly yet executes it with subtle sophistication, ensuring that it is not just a functional space, but an architectural statement.

The Sasquatch 617 is a panoramic, medium-format film camera developed by industrial designer Derek Chiang in collaboration with industrial and graphic designer Ellie Kim. The project responds to the challenge of capturing wide, uninterrupted landscapes beyond the limits of standard photographic framing.

 

Unlike stitched digital panoramas, which reconstruct scenes from multiple images, the Sasquatch 617 produces a continuous photograph, making it suited for dynamic environments with movement, such as trees in the wind or breaking waves.

Sasquatch 617 expands the limits of panoramic photography

 

The camera is constructed with a 304 stainless steel exterior frame combined with 3D printed polycarbonate components. With a lens attached, the system weighs approximately 1kg. Functional features include a focusing ring, a rear door panel for full access, and manual film advance knobs. Optional accessories extend usability and include a magnetically attached viewfinder, a magnetically attached shutter release cable, and a protective lens cover.

 

The Sasquatch 617 model is designed as a robust tool for outdoor use while maintaining precision in construction and operation. Pre-orders will be available on Kickstarter in September 2025, with shipping planned for late November.

Mailbox-inspired heating system could replace electric blankets with a safer, water-circulating solution

An electric blanket is my best friend during the winter. It rests on my bed, plugged into the socket, and on cold evenings, I switch it on a few minutes before crawling under the sheets. The fun of slipping into a warm bed is nothing short of bliss when the mercury is dipping outside. The blanket, with its integrated heating element, radiates heat evenly across the bed. However, the potential risks, such as electromagnetic radiation, dryness, overheating, and even short circuits, always loom in my mind. Still, it remains the best option for a warm, cozy bed, and for most of us, the comfort feels worth the risk.

With the concept of the Warmflow Messenger, Studio NDI may have just designed an emotionally viable and a trustable alternative to the common concerns of the traditional electric blanket. As the name otherwise suggests, Warmflow is not a massager; it’s actually a hydraulic warming mattress host conceptualized to replace electric blankets with a gentle, water-circulation heating system.

Being an alternative to an electric blanket, the Warmflow Messenger does not use electric heating elements, which can cause issues of overheating, dryness, or electromagnetic radiation. It instead uses water circulation to provide warmth more safely and comfortably. With the safer hydraulic warming technology, it intends to redefine the winter sleep experience.

The name and appearance of the device are inspired by the retro street mailbox – a timeless symbol of trust and communication. The Warmflow vision the warmth as mail, which needs to be delivered in a trustworthy and safe manner. For this, the arched device features a mail slot-like water refilling space, in the body made lightweight and attractive with the use of ABS plastic. The body is smudge-resistant and features a metallic finish.

The entire user experience with the hydraulic warming mattress host is very tactile and personal. The onboard vintage mechanical controls provide audible feedback and help define and set precise temperature, when and where you want. The Warmflow Messenger has a hidden display that discreetly manages the aesthetics when off, and lights up with information when activated. Of course, in the age of AI, you can expect some intelligence flowing into the device, which, for now, is idealized only with dedicated app support for customization to individual sleep patterns.

So, as the hydraulic heating device delivers even and comforting warmth safely to beds during winter, the constant temperature and humidity indication ensures you know when a refill is required so the warmth can be moist and comforting all night long. What makes the Warmflow more exciting is its integrated cable management on the back, which ensures a clean and tidy appearance in any setting or location. This should be another reason for appreciating the device, especially for someone like me who keeps dangling over the loose electric blanket cable at night.

Epic 4,000-Piece LEGO Grinch in Whoville MOC strikes nostalgia after 25 years

Remember the first time you watched Jim Carrey slither down a chimney in a Santa suit, his face contorted into that iconic yellow-eyed grin? For millennials who grew up with Ron Howard’s live-action “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (2000), the film remains a holiday staple that somehow gets better with age. Now, a LEGO fan designer has captured that same magic in brick form with “The Grinch: Whoville” – a spectacular MOC (My Own Creation) that’s currently gathering steam on LEGO Ideas.

This isn’t just any fan creation. With nearly 4,000 pieces (3,990 to be exact), this build is a comprehensive love letter to the film that transformed Dr. Seuss’s simple tale into a visual feast. The designer has recreated Whoville in meticulous detail, from its whimsical, rounded architecture to its festive holiday decorations, all while maintaining that signature Seussian asymmetry that made the movie’s production design so memorable.

The lower portion of the build showcases Whoville’s most iconic locations. The pastel-colored buildings feature curved walls, rounded windows, and holiday decorations that perfectly capture the film’s fantastical aesthetic. There’s the post office where Cindy Lou gets accidentally wrapped as a gift (complete with a reception desk, shipping room, and the infamous hole she falls through). Next door sits the town hall, where the Whobilation 2000 celebration takes place, featuring the mayor’s office with the Book of Who and the Cheermeister shirt in progress.

Cindy Lou’s house is equally detailed, with Betty Lou’s extravagant light display adorning the exterior. Inside, you’ll find the kitchen with Who pudding, the living room with its Christmas tree, and even Cindy Lou’s bedroom where she sang “Where Are You Christmas?” – a scene that still brings a tear to many a millennial eye.

But the real showstopper is Mount Crumpit, rising dramatically behind Whoville. The gray, snow-capped mountain houses the Grinch’s cave, complete with his bedroom, disguise hooks, and a trash-sorting table where he scavenges for meals. There’s even Max’s doghouse with a secret compartment for his unused hat and haircut. The designer cleverly used scale to create a forced perspective effect, making the mountain appear larger than life, just as it loomed over Whoville in the film.

The set includes several smaller builds that add playability: the Whoville Christmas tree, Martha May’s rapid-fire light installer (which decorates a house in under a minute), a small Who car, and the Grinch’s overloaded sled from his gift-stealing spree.

What makes this build special isn’t just its accuracy, but how it captures the emotional core of the film. From the Grinch’s lonely cave to the warm, communal spaces of Whoville, the MOC reflects the story’s themes of isolation, community, and redemption – themes that resonated with audiences and helped the film gross over $345 million worldwide.

No recreation of the film would be complete without its unforgettable characters. The MOC features eight minifigures: The Grinch in his Santa disguise (with stolen goods), the Grinch in his Who disguise (with swappable classic hair), Cindy Lou Who (with her flower lamp), Martha May Whovier in her Whobilation dress, the Mayor with the Book of Who, Lou Lou Who in his postal uniform, Betty Lou Who in pajamas, and of course, Max the dog.

Currently, “The Grinch: Whoville” has gathered over 3,300 supporters on LEGO Ideas, but it needs 10,000 to be considered for production as an official LEGO set. For those who spent their childhoods watching Jim Carrey’s green face scrunch up as his heart grew three sizes, this might be the perfect opportunity to bring that nostalgic magic home in brick form. If you’re feeling a bit Grinchy yourself, maybe supporting this project will make your heart grow a few sizes too. Scheduled to open in spring 2029, the property is the company’s largest to date, offering direct access to Rusutsu’s ski slopes alongside panoramic views of Mount Yotei, often called the Mount Fuji of Hokkaidō.

 

Snøhetta’s design is guided by the concept of the zenith, the highest point in the sky above a location, which here becomes an architectural metaphor and spatial strategy. The structure is built around a central courtyard, while the layout shifts between lively communal zones, private rooms, and wellness areas, including a gym, sauna, and a series of indoor and outdoor baths.

Bathing areas range from an open-air infinity pool to cave-like meditation baths carved in stone. Upstairs, a primary suite and three guest rooms each feature private bathrooms, while a dedicated ski lounge connects directly to the slopes with space for equipment storage.

 

Set within Shikotsu-Tōya National Park, Rusutsu Resort is located about 90 minutes from Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport.
