British Nigerian multidisciplinary artist and designer Yinka Ilori has created his first watch collaboration with M.A.D.Editions, bringing his vibrant design language to the M.A.D.1S in a three-part series titled Grow Your Dreams. Each of the limited editions (Sun, Nature, and Water) infuses Swiss watchmaking with Ilori’s guiding philosophy of optimism and growth.

 

The collaboration began unexpectedly when MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser encountered Ilori’s work in a magazine. Within a week, the artist was in Geneva, exploring the mechanics and imagination of M.A.D.Editions. The project became an opportunity to translate Ilori’s world of color and storytelling onto the wrist, a new scale for him.

 

Yinka Ilori lives in a universe bursting with colour; his work makes you feel alive, like a rush of adrenaline pushing you to go further. This collaboration has created something that brings joy, a reminder to realise your own dreams,’ says Büsser.

Each edition of the Yinka Ilori-designed M.A.D.1S watch carries a distinct palette. Sun pairs a yellow rotor with green strap accents, Nature combines a green rotor with purple and red straps, and Water contrasts blue shades across rotor and strap. All three feature a secondary white strap, offering flexibility for wear.

 

The artist‘s design language is embedded throughout. The numbers on the dial carry his typographic imprint, while the strap embossing references his recurring tree motif, a symbol of patience and growth. The rotor, engineered from titanium and anodized for color, reveals a delicate tree pattern that glimmers with movement, highlighted by the etched phrase ‘Grow Your Dreams’.

m.a.d.editions’ innovation in detail

 

While the M.A.D.1S platform is familiar to watch collectors, this edition by Yinka Ilori introduces a number of firsts. HyCeram, a liquid ceramic hardened by heat, brings color directly inside the bezel, finished by hand-polishing. Beneath the movement, an aluminum baseplate is stamped with textural waves, creating a rippling 3D effect that shifts under light.

 

The mechanical foundation remains the slim LaJoux-Perret calibre introduced in the M.A.D.1S during Geneva Watch Days 2024. With its high-performance rotor re-engineered for both intricacy and durability, the watch balances technical precision with expressive design.

Design, for Ilori, has always been about storytelling, community, and hope. He has created larger scale projects like playgrounds and bridges as well as human-scale works like furniture and fashion. His work embodies a belief that ‘everyday life can be transformed by color and joy.

 

I’ve always been obsessed with trees,’ Yinka Ilori explains.Harvesting and growing them because you invest time in it. It’s pouring love into something you care about, and that starts a conversation. It’s the same for this process, and the way of thinking behind it with Max. You have to be patient and harvest a watch. There are similarities between our universes. Typically, mine are very public, but there’s something very private and public about a watch. Everyone sees it, but it’s you who has that connection with it.

Eloi Goulhot’s Mallet-Based Walnut Cracker

Walnuts are extraordinarily tough nuts to crack. Here in the ‘States, we used to do it with a lever-based contraption…

…but in France, they simply used a mallet. French product designer Eloi Goulhot recently built on that, adding the principle of a deadblow mallet to design his own version:

This was apparently a self-directed project, but I bet if Goulhot chooses to pursue it, a manufacturer will bite.

A Low-Cost, Quickly-Deliverable Modular Signage System

This signage system was designed for Taiwan’s National Kaohsiung Normal University (NKNU) by Hand Heart Design, a Taiwanese design studio. The brief was tough: The school asked for a wayfinding system that could be delivered on a tight deadline, and at a low cost.

HHD’s solution was to mass-produce metal plates with a grid of holes drilled in them. This was cheaper and less time-consuming than ordering individually printed plates; the “graphics” were instead provided by a template and lengths of rope.

The signs are powder-coated and the ropes are wax-coated, so the signage is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

“Working within a very limited time and budget, the design team transformed seemingly unremarkable limitations into design highlights, selecting modular perforated metal as the base material and selecting waterproof and resilient wax rope to weave various icons from the humanities, sciences, and art through a connection of dots and lines.”

“In addition to conveying the spirit of research, the reusable and sustainable material also provides a modular solution for subsequent maintenance and development. This breakthrough design finds infinite possibilities for expansion in the extension of dots.”

Bundle Studio’s Prototyping Processes for Bio-Based Furniture Designs

Copenhagen-based Bundle Studio was formed to explore the use of bio-based materials in furniture. “We believe designers must redefine material use for sustainability,” write founders Jón Hinrik Höskuldsson and Kirstine Nørgaard Sejersen, “and we aim to create functional, aesthetically pleasing products that push the boundaries of sustainable materials and inspire industry change.”

Messing around with materials in the studio ultimately led to their Bundle chair:

“Through extensive experimentation, we developed a stackable, lightweight mono-material chair by thermo-pressing flax fibres and PLA into rigid shells. The chair weighs 2.5 kg, with about half of that weight being bio-based plastic.”

“The project emphasizes material-driven design guided by creativity and curiosity, using biobased composites to challenge traditional plastic furniture construction. By splitting the chair into smaller components, we improved material efficiency and introduced a craft-like quality uncommon in plastic furniture. The incorporation of flax fibres into a PLA matrix makes the composite both biobased and biodegradable, reducing environmental impact.”

They then used what they learned with Bundle to create this much more refined Branch chair:

“Building on our knowledge of flax fiber/PLA composites, we wanted to explore how the composite could be combined with other materials. The result is a side chair with a beech wood veneer frame and a thermo-pressed composite seat, balancing strength, sustainability, and a refined organic form language. Designed for practicality, Branch is stackable and weighs 4.5 kg.”

Gadhouse’s retro-inspired headphone boasts high res audio and USB-C jack

We live in an era where wire clutter is the least desirable of all the things we own. Unless you are an audiophile who loves wired gear for the sake of premium audio quality that wireless audio gear can rarely match, the chances are you also have a pair of wireless headphones or earbuds. Over the past couple of years, owning a wireless headset is a common affair, given how affordable they’ve become.

While some celebrities have been spotted using wired earphones and headphones, the practical aspect of wireless ones cannot be denied. Most of us would prefer the freedom of a wireless ecosystem, but then there is always a chance to revisit the nostalgia of the past. Case in point, the Wesley headphones by Gadhouse, designed to revive the nostalgia of yesteryears when the Walkman was the buzzword and an integral element of pop culture. In fact, the pair has an eerily close resemblance to the Sony’s original Walkman and has a similar concept of the Km5 Lightwear Headphones Hp1  or the more swanky Fiio SNOWSKY.

Even though Google has recently said that “Embarrassing wires? Not a great look for that carbon neutral pledge,” we partly disagree when it comes to audio listening gear. They have a better sound quality at a similar price range for TWS, last longer, and are therefore better for the planet. This headphone release comes just a day after Google’s remarks, which could be a mere coincidence. The retro-inspired headphones adopt the old-school over-the-ear headphone design, keeping things down to a minimum. The pair comes with a USB-C, 3.5mm, and 6.3mm adapters that plug straight into your high-resolution music player or smartphone. This means you can enjoy 48kHz Lossless Audio, which no flagship TWS headphone or earbuds can achieve, even with the best codecs like LDAC or aptX HD.

Wesley comes with an inline mic to take calls hands-free or enjoy playing FPS shooter games with buddies. A tactile playback control button is integrated into the remote control of the set. The sound quality of these will most probably not match the big daddies of the wired headphone world, still, they have good quality audio that should be airy and nuanced. Those small foam earpads should make you believe there is decent passive noise cancellation, and active noise cancellation is out of the question.

According to Petch Watcharaphon, CEO of Gadhouse, the 105 gram headphones are a tribute to times when music was tactile and deeply personal. They, in a way, “revive the spirit of the decade with a design that feels both timeless and relevant today.” Gadhouse Wesley will be released in September for a price of $69. So, will you take the ride back in time to the 80s, listening to some of the biggest hits of all time on these headsets?

(Unnecessary?) Objects for Measuring Children’s Heights

A number of older houses across the world will have penciled height marks on the wall, in what was once a child’s room. These marks were simple to make, requiring just two already-owned items in the kitchen junk drawer: A tape measure and a pencil.

These days, however, we’re apparently running out of things to spend money on. Rather than relying on a pencil and tape measure, which most households already own, you can splash out on something far more expensive and ultimately disposable. Companies like Pottery Barn Kids will sell you a $130 piece of MDF with markings on it. (Ironically, you still need a tape measure and pencil to accurately install it; it doesn’t start at 0, to accommodate for trim.)

You can even order custom versions with your child’s name written in Garamond.

And in Japan, they have of course solved this “problem” with technology. This Digital Height Meter by Tomica is a toy bus concealing a laser measuring unit. It runs ¥3,850 (USD $26).

But if your child prefers giraffes to buses, no worries:

Admittedly I’m not a parent, so it’s perhaps not my place to criticize these objects.

Soft Interfaces is the future of touch-responsive textiles

Soft Interfaces is a groundbreaking project that is changing how we interact with everyday objects by merging advanced technology with textiles. The result is a lamp whose brightness can be changed just by pressing or stretching its soft, fabric-covered surface. This is possible thanks to liquid metal embedded within custom-knitted fabrics. The collaboration between the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM and WINT Design Lab offers a glimpse into a future where touch and movement replace screens and buttons in our daily technology.

The lamp developed by the team stands out for its tactile interaction. Instead of relying on switches or digital displays, users simply touch or stretch different areas of the fabric to adjust the light’s intensity and temperature. This intuitive, screenless control uses body movement and the sensation of touch, creating a direct connection between the user and the device. The lamp’s textile surface is engineered so that when it is pressed or stretched, the cross-section of the liquid metal pathways changes. These tiny shifts are detected by the system and translated into changes in the lighting, making the interaction feel almost magical.

What truly makes Soft Interfaces unique is its approach to integrating technology into fabric. The team developed new methods for injecting liquid metal into knitted textiles, ensuring the pathways are precise and durable. This breakthrough enables the fabric to sense even the gentlest touch, surpassing traditional conductive threads in sensitivity and flexibility. The lamp’s textile screen is held in a specially designed frame that keeps it perfectly tensioned, diffusing light softly throughout the room and hiding the technical components from view.

The implications go far beyond just lighting. This technology could soon transform home textiles into responsive surfaces, make car interiors more interactive, or bring new levels of sensitivity to medical devices. The energy consumption of these textile interfaces is much lower than that of traditional digital displays, offering a sustainable path forward for smart product design. The research teams are already testing further applications and refining the technology for broader use.

Design was central to the Soft Interfaces project. WINT Design Lab worked closely with Berlin-based studio case studies to develop unique knit patterns and yarn blends. These not only define the interactive zones but also enhance the look and feel of the lamp, making it as beautiful as it is functional. The color and texture of the fabric are designed to complement the adjustable lighting, shifting in appearance with the mood of the room.

Soft Interfaces signals a new era for human-object relationships, one where technology is seamlessly woven into our environments. As the research continues, we may soon see textiles that do much more than cover our furniture. They could become the very interface between us and the smart devices in our lives.

These masterpieces are a specimen of thousands of hours of planning, engineering, and pure artistic vision, transforming childhood toys into sophisticated works of functional art.

From Broadway stages to rally cars, vintage computers to haunted mansions, August’s best builds prove that LEGO remains the ultimate creative medium for ambitious designers. The creations tell mesmerizing stories while simplifying complex technical challenges, whether it’s engineering functional rotating mechanisms or capturing the fluid movement of traditional Japanese garments in rigid plastic bricks.

1. LEGO Hamilton Musical

Theatre meets LEGO in this stunning recreation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revolutionary musical. The designer has meticulously captured the essence of the Richard Rodgers Theatre stage, where Hamilton has been captivating audiences since 2015, condensing the entire American Revolution into a display-worthy model that would make even King George III grudgingly impressed. What strikes you is the attention to theatrical detail, from dual staircases to that iconic rotating floor.

The minifigure selection reads like opening night’s playbill. Alexander Hamilton stands center stage in his revolutionary green coat, while the Schuyler sisters watch from the balcony in period-appropriate pastel dresses. Aaron Burr lurks nearby, and King George III appears in regal red regalia, looking ready to remind the colonies, “You’ll Be Back.” Each character’s costume has been thoughtfully adapted to minifigure format while keeping those recognizable Broadway traits that make theatrical magic work.

2. LEGO Colin McRae’s Subaru Impreza WRC

TOMOELL’s tribute to rally racing captures every detail that makes the Impreza WRC instantly recognizable to motorsport fans. That deep blue body adorned with classic “555” livery graphics, those unmistakable gold rally wheels, the aggressive hood scoop, commanding front bumper, and rear wing that screams championship pedigree.  The builder spent countless hours perfecting every contour and angle, ensuring this represents McRae’s specific championship-winning machine rather than some generic sports car approximation.

The original Subaru Impreza WRC was engineering brilliance personified. Prodrive designed it 160mm shorter than its predecessor, with a 60mm shorter wheelbase for improved agility. McRae’s 1995 World Rally Championship win made him the youngest-ever WRC champion, and the car’s combination of turbocharged power, symmetrical all-wheel drive, and relentless durability made it legendary in motorsport, video games, and popular culture. This LEGO version captures that authentic rally spirit through perfect proportions and livery placement.

3. LEGO Retro Computer

PovedaBricks has created something special with this homage to late 80s and early 90s computing. Built from 2,286 carefully selected pieces, this MOC brings those chunky, beige-box computers back to life with startling accuracy. Terauma’s interpretation of Louis Vuitton’s iconic train case is pure artistic achievement. These cases have been part of LV’s heritage since 1980, and while nobody travels by train with authentic luxury luggage anymore, they remain symbols of sophisticated travel and craftsmanship excellence. The realism here is stunning, with perfect tans and browns representing canvas and leather construction. The monogramming aligns flawlessly across every surface.

The hinge mechanism works flawlessly, opening and closing with satisfying precision. The handle incorporates subtle flexibility, adjusting slightly to different grips rather than remaining rigidly fixed. Even the reinforced corners and stackable inner compartments reflect the practical luxury that defines genuine Louis Vuitton craftsmanship. This remains purely conceptual due to LV’s protective legal stance, but that limitation doesn’t diminish the amazing artistic achievement displayed here.

5. LEGO Early 20th Century London Set

Bricky_Brick’s architectural masterpiece captures London during its most transformative period. This four-storey ensemble carefully represents the city’s essence during that fascinating era when Victorian sensibilities were evolving toward Edwardian modernization. The result invites builders into a London where architecture, fashion, and daily habits were all transforming within just a couple of decades. The front facade presents bustling street life with remarkable authenticity, blending Victorian and Edwardian architectural elements with natural sophistication.

The real magic happens when you flip the build over, revealing more than 13 different mini dioramas showcasing authentic British life from the period. These behind-the-scenes vignettes bring the architecture to life, creating a complete urban microcosm that tells stories about how people lived during this pivotal historical moment.

6. LEGO Cessna 185 Skywagon

Bryan92609’s Skywagon shows us exactly what makes aviation special when done right. This Ideas submission captures the rugged versatility that defines the Cessna 185, translating real-world utility into LEGO form without losing any of the original’s practical appeal. The scale is perfect for minifigures, meaning this integrates seamlessly into detailed airport displays or city builds.

That yellow and red livery immediately suggests bush pilot operations, screaming authentic aviation engineering through every proportion. The flaps work, doors open and close properly, and landing gear retracts with satisfying mechanical precision. These aren’t just cosmetic details; they’re designed to be functional elements that capture the utilitarian spirit of the original Skywagon.

7. LEGO Flying Dutchman

Tobnac’s interpretation of Davy Jones’ legendary vessel weighs nearly 4 kilograms and stretches 103 centimeters of pure nightmare fuel. The massive front jaw of the ship steals every scene, those curved teeth creating a predatory menace that made the Dutchman’s movie appearances truly terrifying.

Getting those organic curves right in LEGO required serious engineering innovation, delivering a prow that looks ready to devour anything crossing her path. The functional details matter enormously; triple cannons rotate with mechanical precision, their hatch covers held by chains that reinforce the vessel’s industrial gothic aesthetic. These elements create authenticity that honors the supernatural horror of the source material.

8. LEGO Kimono Build

TheDriXx’s debut MOC combines traditional Japanese textile artistry with LEGO’s structural possibilities in seemingly impossible ways. Despite being a first-ever LEGO creation, this build has earned over 7,000 votes on the LEGO Ideas forum, proving cultural appreciation resonates powerfully with the building community.

The two figures wear kimonos that somehow transcend LEGO’s inherent rigidity, looking genuinely fabric-like with body-contouring qualities that suggest flowing textiles rather than assembled plastic elements throughout the entire construction. The blue kimono features delicate cherry blossom motifs, while the red showcases traditional crane designs—both representing Japan’s most iconic cultural symbols. This portable synthesizer captures that educational philosophy through a compact design featuring a screen, a small speaker, fourteen buttons, and two control knobs for comprehensive musical experimentation. Press button combinations and the 3Tonic instantly identifies your chord construction, building understanding through repetitive, hands-on practice. This transforms music theory from an academic exercise into an interactive game, making complex harmonic relationships accessible to builders without formal musical training.

10. LEGO Addams Family Mansion

Petrus Odyssey’s tribute to the 1991 Addams Family films captures everything great about pop culture LEGO building. Rather than generic haunted house construction, this 2,999-piece architectural achievement drips with the same dark elegance that made Barry Sonnenfeld’s movies iconic. The mansion rises in sharp black-and-white contrast, with decorative railings that genuinely look menacing.

This captures that distinctive Addams energy, simultaneously threatening and playful, gothic and sophisticated through every carefully considered architectural element. The towering central spire dominates the skyline with appropriately ominous presence, while intricate black railings adorning every roofline create visual complexity. The stark color scheme, punctuated by occasional dark green doors, immediately evokes the gothic grandeur that made the Addams residence recognizable.

Entre Pircas Suites by Alarciaferrer Arquitectos add a contemporary architectural layer to a historic hotel in Córdoba, Argentina. The site, formerly the summer residence of Argentine president J.A. Roca, is a rich historical landscape with 19th-century buildings, a park designed by Carlos Thays, and a majestic artificial lake. The suites draw inspiration from the region’s characteristic ‘pircas’ — rural stone walls used to enclose land — creating a design deeply rooted in its time and place.

The use of stone and wood in the construction directly references the traditional rural buildings of the region, creating a strong sense of material and cultural continuity.

hypernature architecture embraces rising water levels

 

The design for Jie Han’s Living with Water installation is guided by the principle of ‘hypernature’, a concept that intentionally amplifies natural processes. Along the Richmond shoreline, tides fluctuate by several feet each day. Han’s design amplifies these movements through spatial and ecological design, transforming an abstract concept into a visceral, embodied experience. The centerpiece of the design is a dome with a diameter of 23 feet, anchored to the bay floor. Its interior floor, however, floats with the water surface. At low tide, visitors can stand comfortably, but as the tide rises, the floating floor lifts, compressing the space. At high tide, a standing body can no longer be accommodated, translating the daily tidal rhythm into a direct physical experience.

This prototype is scalable, with larger domes designed for community gatherings and smaller ones for more intimate activities. The network of domes and bridges establishes a new vernacular of floating architecture, integrating social function with ecological performance. Vegetation plays a crucial role in this dynamic. Terrestrial plants root in higher zones, while aquatic plants grow from submerged soils. As sea levels rise over time, the terrestrial plants will be eliminated, allowing aquatic vegetation to overtake the structure. This living transformation further emphasizes the domes as a reflection of rising seas.

 

The project proposes a cultural adaptation that embraces water as a central design medium, offering a replicable model for coastal cities worldwide and demonstrating how thoughtful design can transform environmental challenges into opportunities for connection and adaptation.
