Colorado’s First 3D Printed Homes Mark Construction Breakthrough in Wildfire-Prone Region

Two concrete homes sitting side by side in Buena Vista, Colorado, look ordinary enough from the street. One has a green stucco finish, the other shows off layered concrete walls. But these twin houses, called VeroVistas, were built in a way that’s never been done before in the state—printed layer by layer using a massive 3D concrete printer. VeroTouch, the company behind the project, spent months figuring out how to make 3D printing work for real homes that real people would live in. One house even hides its printed origins completely behind stucco, proving this construction method can blend into any neighborhood.

The payoff came when they finished the second house in just 16 days of actual printing time. That’s from the concrete slab to the top of the house, according to automation engineer Ashley Fant, who gave tours during the homes’ February open house. The first home took approximately a year and a half due to research and development, while the second required only half that time. The COBOD BOD2 3D construction printer follows predefined paths with precision, significantly reducing manual labor while saving weeks of construction work compared to conventional building methods.

The speed matters, but it’s not the main story here. These homes were designed specifically for Colorado’s wildfire problem. Nearly half the state’s residents live in areas where fires pose a real threat, and traditional wood-frame houses burn. The VeroVistas homes use A1-rated concrete walls that won’t catch fire or feed flames—the highest fire resistance rating you can get. The concrete walls do not fuel combustion at any stage, providing a stark contrast to conventional wood-framed construction that remains vulnerable to increasingly frequent wildfire threats across Colorado’s mountain regions.

Each 1,100-square-foot home comes loaded with premium features. Heated bathroom floors, quartz countertops, GE appliances throughout. At $625,000 each, they’re priced right in line with other homes in Colorado’s mountain communities, but they offer something those other houses can’t—genuine fire protection. The homes also feature energy-efficient design with mold resistance, making advanced construction technology accessible rather than positioning it as a luxury novelty.

VeroTouch partnered with South Main, a local developer, using local contractors for electrical, plumbing, and finishing work. This approach kept money and jobs in the community while introducing the new building method. The state took notice, giving VeroTouch $680,000 through its Innovative Housing Incentive Program, which aims to get 7,500 new homes built over three years. Governor Jared Polis called it exactly the kind of innovation Colorado needs to tackle its housing shortage, while state officials commended VeroTouch for helping increase housing supply.

The success in Buena Vista opened doors quickly. VeroTouch is already working on a 32-home development in nearby Salida, with the first house under construction. They’ve had to hire more people to keep up with demand. Grant Hamel, VeroTouch’s CEO, puts it simply: “We’re creating legacy homes that can be passed down, rather than torn down.” He thinks these houses will still be standing a century from now, long after wildfires have come and gone. It’s September 1st, which means it’s officially Back To Hogwarts Day, and while most of us muggles can only dream of being sorted into our favorite houses, the folks at Dwarf Factory do have something that’s arguably a close second! Created for Drop and Harry Potter, these four artisanal keycaps sort you into either of the four Hogwarts houses. Each keycap is detailed with one of the four house crests, and for $45 apiece, you can adorn your mechanical keyboard with an artisanal cap of your choice, representing your house… and ultimately your destiny!

As we’ve come to expect from Dwarf Factory, each keycap is meticulous in its hand-painted detail. The four caps embody the four houses beautifully, with the colored themes as well as the use of metallic paints on the mascots themselves. Labels on the bottom read out the house name, although at that low angle, you also get to admire the 3D relief of each crest.

Look around the keycap and you’ll find surprising details everywhere, making this one all-round beauty.

We finally end with the Slytherin keycap, featuring the house’s mascot, a serpent. While most mascots were chosen to depict the personalities of people within the house, the Slytherin mascot was a direct connection to house founder Salazar Slytherin, because of his love for snakes and his ability to speak to them. This ability was central to his identity and ended up also representing his house’s themes of cunning and ambition, traits often associated with serpents in folklore and mythology.

All four keycaps are modeled with the Cherry R1 profile and are 1U sized, which means they fit most standard single-cell keys on your mechanical keyboard. On long highway drives, this creates persistent engine noise that can become genuinely fatiguing over extended distances. Unlike the Enhanced Sound Engine (ESE) artificial audio that can be disabled through dealer programming, the mechanical exhaust note cannot be easily turned off. This makes it less appealing for luxury-focused buyers who prioritize serene highway cruising over sporty exhaust notes.

Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 provides comprehensive active safety features that work effectively in real-world scenarios. The pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, dynamic radar cruise control, and lane departure alert operate smoothly without feeling intrusive or overly aggressive in their interventions. The massage function provides welcome relief during long road trips, though accessing it requires navigating touchscreen menus rather than having dedicated physical buttons. This design choice prioritizes clean aesthetics over quick access, becoming frustrating when you want to adjust settings while driving. Second-row passengers in the Overtrail+ configuration face a significant design compromise. While the eliminated third row theoretically creates more space, Lexus failed to include sliding seat mechanisms that would allow the second row to move back and capitalize on that space. This creates a frustrating situation where tall passengers remain cramped despite the absence of a third row. During our test, I was in the driver seat at 6’2″ with my daughter (5’6″) sitting behind me on a road trip, and I can confirm her complaint that the legroom is cramped. These tight conditions made our long road trips less enjoyable than expected. The fixed seating position means families with taller members cannot optimize the interior space, making the GX 550 feel more cramped than similarly sized SUVs that offer adjustable second-row seating.

For some families, the GX’s versatility may reduce overall environmental impact by eliminating the need for multiple specialized vehicles.

At $89,779 as-tested, the 2025 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+ succeeds brilliantly at its intended mission: eliminating the traditional luxury versus capability compromise. It delivers what few competitors truly match – a premium vehicle for adventure-focused families who want both comfort and capability in a single package. This SUV makes perfect sense for weekend warriors who don’t want to sacrifice comfort during the drive to adventure destinations, families who need real towing capability without giving up daily luxury, and anyone tired of choosing between refined highway manners and genuine trail competence.

The GX 550 isn’t perfect. Fuel economy remains poor by modern standards, some luxury features feel buried in touchscreen menus, and options like the catback exhaust can actually detract from the refined highway experience that luxury SUV buyers expect. The substantial price premium over the Land Cruiser won’t make sense for everyone, particularly buyers who prioritize pure capability over luxury appointments or those who won’t regularly utilize both the on-road refinement and off-road competence.

RAD+ar composes a commercial layered garden in Jakarta

 

Shelters on Slope (SS) Garden, designed by RAD+ar, is a commercial garden project located in North Jakarta, Indonesia. The development introduces four shelters embedded within a sunken, sloped green roof landscape, combining retail and dining spaces with an emphasis on natural integration, airflow, and shading. The project establishes an alternative to conventional retail typologies by aligning architectural form with environmental performance and public experience.

 

The design situates four structures within a layered garden that slopes downward toward an adjacent urban lake. This arrangement not only preserves views but also encourages ventilation across the site. Seating areas elevated above the garden connect directly to the water, while the expansive green roof provides protection from solar exposure in Jakarta’s tropical climate. The sloped roof also creates setbacks and breaks that link the front boulevard to the lake, enabling continuous pedestrian movement and spatial variation.

‘Sunken ground’ concept anchors Shelters on Slope garden

 

The program is organized around a central communal court, with circulation routes unfolding as a meandering sequence from entrance to inner garden. The ground-level drop-off transitions into a reception and bar area, leading visitors through a skylit lobby toward the restaurant and central space. High, curved ceilings taper outward to frame views of the lake, while skylights and openings ensure daylight penetrates deep into the interior. The layered spatial organization supports both intimacy and openness, balancing enclosed dining areas with open-air courtyards.

 

The architectural concept is rooted in the idea of the ‘sunken ground,’ referencing both Indonesian and global garden traditions where central landscapes act as anchors for social activity. In this project, the sunken courtyard forms a focal point for gatherings, while shelter volumes above cantilever outward to provide panoramic views across both the boulevard and the water. The design team at RAD+ar arranges flexible zones to accommodate temporary programs, enhancing the adaptability of the commercial garden.

Materially, translucent ceilings and extensive glazing merge with vegetation to create visual continuity between architecture and landscape. The arched shelter volumes are designed as prototypes that extend panoramically along the shoreline, reinforcing visual connections while allowing the green roof to ascend and envelop the structures. The integration of greenery across multiple levels ensures that nature remains central to the experience, with pocket gardens, shaded areas, and elevated viewing points embedded throughout.

 

By preserving one of the last remaining lakefront sites in the area, the project avoids the typical shophouse development model and instead proposes a sustainable framework for commercial space in Jakarta. Shelters on Slope Garden demonstrates how spatial strategies, environmental responsiveness, and flexible programming can converge to create a commercial landscape that prioritizes both ecological and social value.

Alfa Romeo Vita Nova Concept Proves the Brand Still Has Racing DNA

Remember when Alfa Romeo actually made cars that could make your pulse race? Before they became the brand that sells crossovers with names like “Stelvio” to suburban families who pronounce it “STEL-vee-oh”? Designer Cheeheon Lee clearly remembers, and his Alfa Romeo Vita Nova concept is a love letter to when the Milanese marque built actual rockets with four wheels. This isn’t some half-hearted styling exercise or student portfolio piece. Lee has crafted something that looks like it rolled straight out of a future where Alfa never lost its way, where every car they made could demolish a Nürburgring lap time and look devastatingly gorgeous doing it.

The Vita Nova concept exists in two flavors: a stunning emerald green road car that screams “hypercar” and a full racing livery version that wouldn’t look out of place leading the pack at Le Mans. Both versions share the same fundamental DNA, but they tell completely different stories about what modern Alfa Romeo could be. The racing variant sports authentic-looking sponsorship from AMD, Richard Mille, and Stake, complete with proper FIA and Michelin logos that suggest Lee has done his homework on what a legitimate LMH or LMDh prototype would actually wear. Meanwhile, the road car version in that deep metallic green makes every current hypercar look pedestrian by comparison.

What strikes you first about the Vita Nova is how Lee has managed to evolve Alfa’s signature design language without throwing it in the trash like so many modern interpretations do. The triangular scudetto grille is there, but reimagined as a sharp, predatory arrow that looks ready to slice through air molecules. Those circular headlight elements aren’t just retro callbacks; they’re integrated into aggressive aero channels that suggest serious CFD work went into this design. The proportions are absolutely savage, sitting lower than a snake’s belly with wheel arches that could house small apartments. Lee has clearly studied endurance prototypes because every surface serves an aerodynamic purpose, yet the car never looks overwrought or boy-racer ridiculous.

The emerald green version transforms this racing weapon into something you could theoretically drive to dinner, assuming your dinner destination has a helicopter pad for parking. That color choice is brilliant; it references classic British Racing Green while staying uniquely Italian, and the way light plays across those sculptured surfaces makes every angle photogenic. The racing livery version tells a different story entirely, one where Alfa has returned to prototype racing with factory backing and unlimited budgets. Those sponsor decals aren’t just decoration; they’re a statement that this car belongs on grids alongside Porsche 963s and Toyota GR010s.

From a technical standpoint, the aero package is genuinely impressive for a design study. The front splitter and canards aren’t just for show; they’re sized and positioned like they actually move air. The rear diffuser looks like it could generate enough downforce to pin the car to the track at 200 mph, while that continuous LED light bar serves double duty as both signature lighting and an aerodynamic element. The wheel design deserves special mention: those multi-spoke units with cooling cutouts wrapped in what appears to be Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R rubber suggest Lee understands that pretty wheels mean nothing if they can’t handle the heat from serious braking systems.

Currently, Alfa Romeo builds the 4C, which has been on life support for years, and the Giulia Quadrifoglio, which is genuinely excellent but sells about as well as wooden parachutes. Meanwhile, every other Italian exotic manufacturer is printing money with mid-engine supercars and limited-production hypercars. Lee’s Vita Nova concept shows exactly what Alfa could build if they decided to stop playing it safe and remember their motorsport heritage. This design captures the drama and passion that made people fall in love with Alfa Romeo in the first place, when owning one meant accepting unreliability in exchange for automotive poetry.

The Vita Nova concept proves that talented designers can still imagine futures where legacy brands rediscover their souls instead of chasing market share with crossovers. Lee has created something that honors Alfa’s past while pushing boldly forward, a car that could theoretically exist in our current automotive landscape if someone at Stellantis had the vision and courage to greenlight it. Until then, we’ll have to settle for looking at these gorgeous renderings and wondering what might have been.

This Teenage Engineering 4K Webcam concept packs Fun in a Functional Design

Teenage Engineering’s design language is best described as ‘office fun’. They make stuff that serves professionals, but doesn’t necessarily look like it was designed for a boardroom. As its name rather subtly implies, the products have a fun demeanor, brought about by the use of colors, exposed electronics, and simple forms that play a perfect canvas for the color palettes found on the company’s products. Their OP-1 remains one of the most iconic synths of all time, the Pocket Operators still get sold out as soon as they hit the website, and their field recording gear are modern-day classics. Now Teenage Engineering hasn’t really entered the world of imaging per se, but what if you carried that design language forward to something as humble as, say, a webcam?

Imagined by Rodrigo Guadarrama, the TE-W01 is a chonky webcam that embodies Teenage Engineering’s ‘Office Fun’ philosophy. It’s rather blockish, which comes with good reason, considering it packs a 4K camera lens and a large sensor, but also has two sets of microphones, two sets of LED fill lights, and an anodized aluminum outer shell that blends well with your gadgets, but also comes in a variety of colors should you choose to bling things up.

Guadarrama’s webcam is simple, but still uses TE’s building blocks to create a product that delights. The front features 5 stacked modules, sort of resembling TE’s stackable speaker that they unveiled along with Baidu (there’s hints of their IKEA collab in here too). The center is a 4K lens, surrounded by stereo microphones on the top and bottom, and LED fill lights on the side that cast a perfect wash of light on you without needing a large ring LED setup. The dual lights do a better job of illuminating your face evenly, making sure it doesn’t look as harsh as a flashlight.

The camera comes with a pivoting stand that lets you face it anywhere. There’s a USB-C port on the back for connectivity, although the only thing really missing is a privacy shutter. I do believe that TE would engineer an over-the-top shutter design with a fidget quality to it.

The TE-W01 is conceptual, although it truly would be fun if the company made a set of peripherals to go with their PC offerings (they did release a PC case for free just a few days ago that sold out almost immediately). If anyone at TE’s reading this, we’ll be waiting!
