The Ark Nova’s architecture is defined by its mobility and flexibility. Visitors can experience its interior either during performances or as part of guided tours, which reveal the hall’s design logic, engineering, and conceptual foundations. Apart from performances, each ticket grants access to a special exhibition at the Hans Erni Museum, where models, documents, and films trace the hall’s development from concept to reality.

 

The presence of the structure on Lucerne’s lakeside transforms the public space into an ephemeral cultural hub, allowing interaction, open exploration, and even participatory musical experiences, from sing-alongs to workshops. Three Open4All sessions, as well as family-focused days, invite visitors to traverse the hall freely, highlighting the Ark Nova’s adaptability and social mission alongside its aesthetic qualities.

Most supplement bottles are clinical, boring, and frankly designed more for adult convenience than child engagement or any consideration of the user experience. Divyansh Tripathi’s concept for a LEGO-inspired nutrients dispenser takes a completely different approach, asking what would happen if we made the packaging itself part of the play experience rather than just another thing to throw away.

This independent concept design, which has no official connection to the LEGO brand whatsoever, reimagines the humble supplement bottle as a colorful DUPLO-style brick that kids actually want to interact with every single day. The clever part isn’t just the familiar chunky shape and bright colors that immediately signal fun rather than medicine, but how the supplements themselves are delivered through an innovative hidden compartment system that transforms routine into discovery.

Tiny nutrient balls are hidden inside the anti-studs or tubes on the underside of the brick, turning the daily vitamin routine into a treasure hunt where kids discover their supplement by exploring the brick’s hidden compartments. The tactile exploration required to retrieve each day’s supplement adds an element of play that traditional pill bottles completely lack.

Once all the nutrient balls have been consumed over the course of weeks or months, the empty dispenser doesn’t head straight to the recycling bin like most pharmaceutical packaging. Instead, it transforms into a genuine building block that can join a child’s existing LEGO or DUPLO collection, extending the product’s life indefinitely while reducing waste. The concept even suggests using the brick as a growth marker, letting kids track their development over time on something that started as their health supplement.

The sustainability angle here feels particularly thoughtful, addressing the mountains of single-use packaging that typically accompany children’s health products while creating genuine value beyond the initial purchase. Brazilian Artist Lucas Simões Turns Modernist Legacy Into Living Room Sculptures

Brazilian artist Lucas Simões has made a bold jump from gallery walls to living rooms with “Colendra,” his first furniture collection that’s causing quite a stir at Christie’s Los Angeles. The pieces are showing at the “Lightness & Tension” exhibition through September 19, and they’re exactly what you’d expect from an artist who’s spent years cutting up photographs and turning secrets into sculptures.

Simões isn’t shy about his inspiration. He’s channeling Joaquim Tenreiro, the Brazilian modernist master who pretty much invented the country’s mid-century aesthetic back in the day. But this isn’t some nostalgic throwback. Simões takes Tenreiro’s elegant curves and geometric precision, then cranks up the volume until you get furniture that looks like it could anchor a room or hold down a building.

The Sijing Town Sports Center, designed by Spanish architecture studio Selgascano, is set to be built on the outskirts of Shanghai and conceived as a sustainable, human-scale landmark. Planned between transport routes and green corridors, the project emphasizes accessibility and active mobility, linking jogging paths, bike trails, and nearby parks into a wider network of wellness-focused public space.

 

In contrast to the surrounding high-density developments, the sports center introduces an architectural language rooted in openness and landscape integration. The design avoids vertical dominance, instead dispersing its program across a series of low, transparent pavilions with voluminous ETFE rooftops. Each volume is enveloped in greenery, aligning the project with the natural environment and creating a calm counterbalance to the speed and scale of the skyline beyond.

With the layout of the Sijing Town Sports Center’s pavilions, Selgascano draws inspiration from traditional Chinese water towns. Here, bridges, courtyards, and walking paths structure daily life. By embracing the ground plane, the architects prioritizes human scale and sensory engagement over a monumental form that feels unwelcoming from the street.

 

Still, two sculptural and organic volumes serve as the project’s focal points. Their fluid geometry and bold presence establish a recognizable identity while remaining consistent with the horizontal composition. This balance allows the sports center to act as a landmark without relying on size, instead generating resonance through materiality, proportion, and atmosphere.

Tiny robots become “artists” in Robot Factory

The Robot Factory project by Niklas Roy showcases how small robots can become creative artists, blending robotics, generative art, and human perception. These robots started as a playful experiment but quickly turned into a deep investigation into how simple mechanical behaviors can produce complex visual effects and even evoke big ideas from psychology and artificial intelligence.

Imagine a robot built from 3D-printed parts, tiny motors, and an ordinary marker pen. Each robot is compact and low-cost, driven by two stepper motors with O-rings for wheels and an Arduino Nano as its brain. The pen sits at the center, ready to draw as the robot carefully moves across a whiteboard or a sheet of paper. Early versions moved slowly and carefully drew lines, but the design kept evolving. By bringing the wheels closer to the pen, the robot could spin and turn faster, though sometimes it lost a bit of its precise orientation. Despite these little quirks, the robots were surprisingly good at keeping their position and direction using only basic trigonometry and no external references.

Cross Concept stands out as a fresh interpretation of Volkswagen’s electric ambitions, combining affordability, comfort, and a modern design language that balances tradition with innovation.

Built on the MEB Plus platform, Volkswagen’s modular electric vehicle architecture, the ID. Cross Concept brings a front-wheel-drive electric motor rated at 155 kW delivering 208 horsepower for urban commuting and occasional long trips. The vehicle promises a range of around 260 miles on the WLTP cycle, a figure that offers competitive usability for a compact SUV. Cross Concept provides a 450-liter rear trunk and an additional 25-liter front trunk (frunk), offering ample space for luggage and groceries. Furthermore, the vehicle can tow up to 165 pounds, enough to carry two e-bikes, underlining its versatility for active lifestyles.

The electric concept marks a significant step in its broader strategy to expand affordable electric mobility. As global competition in the EV market intensifies, especially from Chinese automakers offering budget-friendly models, the ID. Cross aims to meet the demand for practical, well-priced electric SUVs. By blending modern design, reasonable performance specs, and functional features, VW hopes the ID. Cross will attract a wide audience looking to transition to electric driving without sacrificing the utility of a conventional SUV.

Fantastic Design Feature for Accessibility in These Michael Graves Dressers for Pottery Barn

Few 20th-century architects were more famous than Michael Graves, who became a household name in the ’80s and ’90s. Aside from famous structures like the Portland Building and the Denver Public Library, he also veered into the ID space, designing housewares for Alessi and Target. After a spinal infection left him paralyzed in 2003, he shifted his focus towards designing accessibility-minded objects, furniture and spaces.

While Graves passed away a decade ago his firm, Michael Graves Design lives on, and is still regarded as an expert in accessible design. This is evinced in this small but wonderful design detail in their line of dressers for Pottery Barn.

Practically every dresser on the market has a completely flat top. The MGD-designed ones here have a molding around the perimeter, which make for convenient grab points.

These are useful for both wheelchair users and folks who need some support as they move around the room.

“It gives you this secure place to hold onto, and we went through a lot of iterations to get it so clean and so simple, yet so comfortable and beautiful,” says Robert Van Varick, MGD’s Chief Design Officer.

The molding is also neatly notched at the back corners to accommodate cables.
