Language-Translating Earbuds That Use Bone Conduction for Noisy Environments

Speaking to a customer service rep with a thick accent is difficult enough; when the connection is bad, it’s even worse. Similarly, even for those who speak multiple languages, understanding someone speaking in a different language in a noisy environment, like a transportation hub or a convention center, can be challenging.

Chinese electronics manufacturer Timekettle has designed their W4 AI Interpreter Earbuds for the latter application. They use bone conduction technology (in addition to a microphone) to accurately capture speech even in noisy environments. They need to be paired with your phone to connect to the company’s cloud translation service, and as you speak, your translated communications are played through your phone’s speaker—in your voice, cloned by AI.

That said, listening to a phone speaker in a noisy environment isn’t ideal. To get around this, the company has developed a One-on-One mode, which comes with a slight ick factor: You give one earbud to the person you’re speaking with, so you’ve each got one. When you speak, the other party hears the translation directly through the earbud, and vice versa.

The company says that the translation time is just 0.2 seconds (I imagine it actually depends on your connection speeds), and that they can handle 42 languages and 95 accents with “up to 98%” accuracy.

The buds offer up to four hours of translation time on a single charge. They run $350.

Students at ETH Zurich Invent Rotary Metal 3D Printer

Students at ETH Zurich have invented a new type of metal 3D printer, which takes a cue from turntables: It spins. Designed specifically to produce cylindrical objects, it reduces manufacturing time versus conventional laser powder bed fusion machines (LPBF) by a staggering two-thirds.

With conventional LPBF machines, a layer of powder is spread, then the laser takes a pass, fusing select parts of the layer. Then another layer of powder is spread, and so on. With ETH’s Rapture machine, however, the powder is spread and the laser is fusing continuously, with no dead time between layers.

The Rapture can also handle two different metals at once and lay the particles with precision, greatly reducing waste.

“This process is ideally suited to rocket nozzles, rotating engines and many other components in the aerospace industry,” says ETH Senior Scientist Michael Tucker. “They typically have a large diameter but very thin walls.”

The project was supported by ARIS, the Swiss Academic Space Initiative, which plans to build its own rockets. Rapture could make that an affordable reality.

Porsche Develops Wireless Charging for EVs

Porsche reckons that plugging in an EV each night is a hassle. “Ease of use, suitability for everyday use and charging infrastructure are still the decisive factors when it comes to the acceptance of electric mobility,” says Porsche Board Member for Development Michael Steiner.

To get around that, they’ve developed a wireless charging system for their electric Cayenne, consisting of a pad you leave on your garage floor. A power cable runs from the pad and is plugged into a 220V outlet; while this eliminates the need to install a charging station, you’d still need to hire an electrician to install the high-amperage outlet, unless you’ve already got 220V in your garage.

As for how it works, from a user point of view:

“To initiate the charging process, the Cayenne only has to be parked above the floor plate. A special view in the Surround View parking function makes it easier to maneuver the Cayenne to the optimal charging position.”

“As soon as the parking position above the floor plate is reached and the parking brake is activated, the charging process begins. The contactless transfer of energy between the two charging units takes place over a distance of roughly four to six inches. To make this possible, the Cayenne reduces the ride height automatically.”

That sounds neat, but seems it might be problematic, as it relies on the car’s adaptive air suspension to lower itself. While adaptive air suspensions can be reliable if regularly maintained, there are more potential points of failure.

That said, they have thought about the safety aspect of the charging arrangement in case, say, the family cat wanders into the garage: “The base plate has a motion detector and foreign object detection. The charging process is automatically interrupted if interference is detected.”

Porsche Wireless Charging will launch in Europe next year, and they say they’ll expand to other markets after that.

2. Yellamundie Library

Sydney’s Liverpool district needed a library that could handle its exploding diversity and growth, and fjcstudio delivered something that feels more like a warm embrace than a civic building. Yellamundie’s oval shape flows like the Georges River nearby, a gentle curve that stands out beautifully against all those predictable city blocks. You can’t help but be drawn toward it – the building practically pulls you in with its friendly, organic form.

Walk past at any hour and you’ll see exactly what’s happening inside. Every wall is glass, turning the library into a kind of fishbowl where community life plays out in real time. People reading, kids exploring, groups collaborating – it’s all on display like the world’s most wholesome reality show. The design team was smart about maximizing space, too, tucking a whole floor underground beneath the plaza while flooding it with light through skylights and a gorgeous green courtyard. When darkness falls, the entire building glows like a neighborhood beacon, reminding everyone that knowledge and community never sleep.

What we like

3. La Libreria

Most libraries are stuck in one place, but Diller Scofidio + Renfro had a different idea entirely. La Libreria can pack up like a traveling circus and appear wherever books are needed most. The 24-meter pavilion weighs almost nothing compared to traditional buildings because it uses the books themselves as ballast – a poetic twist that makes literature literally hold up the structure that houses it.

The engineering here is fascinating. Instead of digging foundations, they relied on tensile architecture principles borrowed from French engineer Robert Le Ricolais. Those wooden shelves running the full length aren’t just storage – they’re structural elements keeping the whole thing stable. It’s brilliant in its simplicity and creates this completely transparent reading environment where books and people are always visible from every angle. For communities that can’t afford permanent libraries, this could be a game-changer.

4. National Library of France

Fifteen years of renovation sounds like architectural purgatory, but the National Library of France emerged from its makeover looking spectacular. The famous Oval Paradise reading room got a contemporary refresh that somehow makes the historic Beaux-Arts details pop even more. The real stroke of genius was flipping the building’s orientation entirely, turning what used to be the back door into a grand new entrance complete with a spiraling aluminum staircase that looks like something from a space station.

That oval room now holds 200,000 books within walls lined with carefully integrated shelving and mirrored light fittings that bounce illumination everywhere. The balance between old and new feels effortless, like the building was always meant to look this way. It proves that historic institutions don’t have to choose between preserving the past and serving modern needs – sometimes you can have both if you’re patient enough and smart enough about the details.

The Panyaden Secondary School Library spreads across the ground in concentric circles like ripples in a pond, built primarily from adobe bricks made from local sand and clay. The real show-stopper is the two-tiered bamboo roof, supported by graceful bamboo archways that frame views of the sky through a central oculus.

This isn’t just sustainable building – it’s architecture that breathes with its environment. The materials come from the immediate surroundings, the design responds to Thailand’s tropical climate, and the circular layout creates natural air circulation that keeps things comfortable without air conditioning. Walking through the space feels meditative, like the building itself is teaching you about harmony between human needs and natural systems. The thatched roof and earth walls give it an almost timeless quality, as if it’s been growing from this spot for centuries.

Pocket Scion Pocket-sized Biofeedback Instrument Makes Plants Musical

The world of portable music-making devices has exploded with options over the past few years, from pocket synthesizers to mini drum machines that promise studio-quality sounds in palm-sized packages. Most of these devices focus on traditional sound generation methods, using oscillators, samples, or modeling to create familiar musical tones. The Pocket Scion by Modern Biology and Instruö takes a completely different approach, turning living organisms into active musical collaborators through the fascinating world of biosonification.

At first glance, the Pocket Scion looks like a compact, rectangular device that could easily fit in your pocket alongside your phone and keys. The top panel features a striking circular sensor surrounded by intricate, organic patterns that evoke both natural forms and circuit board aesthetics, while the lower section displays maze-like graphics that provide visual interest and tactile reference points. The overall design feels deliberately approachable yet sophisticated, with visible screws and clear labeling that reinforce a user-friendly, hackable ethos rather than intimidating technical complexity.

Designer: Modern Biology x INSTRUO

The core concept behind the device is biosonification, which captures biofeedback data from living organisms like plants, mushrooms, or even human touch and translates it into evolving soundscapes and musical patterns. The circular sensor on top responds to bioelectric signals from whatever you connect to it, whether that’s a houseplant in your living room or moss you’ve collected during a forest walk. The device includes four built-in instruments with names like Secret Garden, Fungal Waves, Treebeard’s Koto, and Soil Circuits, each designed to complement different types of biological input.

What makes the Pocket Scion particularly compelling is how it democratizes an otherwise complex field of experimental music. You don’t need to understand bioelectricity or synthesis theory to start making interesting sounds with plants, though the device offers enough depth for serious musicians and sound artists. MIDI and Open Sound Control outputs mean it can integrate with larger setups, while the standalone operation keeps things accessible for curious beginners who just want to hear what their succulent sounds like.

The battery-powered design encourages outdoor experimentation, letting you take the device into gardens, forests, or parks to discover the sonic qualities of different organisms in their natural environments. The LED ring around the sensor provides visual feedback that pulses and changes color in response to bioelectric activity, creating a mesmerizing light show that makes the invisible electrical activity of living things suddenly tangible and beautiful.

The Pocket Scion succeeds because it transforms scientific curiosity into musical exploration without requiring advanced technical knowledge or expensive equipment. How PALS’ Eurovision refresh points towards a different design studio model

The Eurovision Song Contest is the world’s biggest live entertainment event. More people watch the annual music competition than watch the Super Bowl, and in this year alone, the contest’s official channels have generated more than two billion impressions.

So when Eurovision decided to refresh its brand identity, ahead of its 70th anniversary in 2026, you might expect them to turn to one of the big design agencies.

Instead they commissioned PALS, a Sheffield-based agency run by Amy Bedford. PALS eschews the usual agency set-up in favour of the so-called “hub and spoke” model, where teams of freelancers are convened for specific projects, depending on its requirements.

Some believe this is the future of design agencies. In a widely-read op-ed last year, Emma Sexton argued the design industry was going through “a long overdue shake-up” and the freelance-based model, used by studios like PALS, would come to the fore.

Bedford came from a traditional agency background, working at studios like Peter & Paul, Jaywing and Fist of Fury. When she started PALS in 2019, she initially recreated the model with which she was familiar.

But she became convinced that there must be a different way to run projects, when, for example, the team worked on a drinks pitch and needed educating in the acronyms and other terminology that the client used. Wouldn’t it be better, she thought, to draft in people familiar with that world who could hit the ground running?

“The nature of each project is so different, so I wanted to build a different way to respond to briefs,” Bedford explains. “I didn’t want us to be the same five people, delivering the same five campaigns, even though it’s for five different clients.”

Instead Bedford built a global network of 150+ creatives around the world, from design directors and illustrators, to animators and copywriters. Most of those she works with have been freelancing for at least five years, which she believes is the sign of a talented creative.

“It’s the cream of the crop of freelancers, and when you put the right people together, you end up with a team that is totally different to the traditional agency model,” she explains. “In agencies, you often have one or two brilliant people, and then loads of people underneath who are not necessarily able to match that brilliance.”

A key part of PALS’ approach is to bring together not just different skillsets, but also different perspectives, Bedford explains. So for a recent project for a client that monitors environmental data, the team included an artist, a comedian, and a water expert alongside more traditional creative roles.

“An agency is essentially a machine to solve communication problems,” she says. “So if you do it with the same team, who only ever solve problems in the same way, you’re only ever going to get the same work.

“I can put totally different brains on it, who are going to bring different perspectives, and challenge how we reach people.”

Bedford and PALS first worked with Eurovision in 2023. The studio created the brand strategy for the BBC’s show in Liverpool, after the UK stepped in as the 2022 runner-up to Ukraine, who couldn’t host due to the ongoing war with Russia.

During that work, PALS created the “United by Music” brand idea, which was later adopted by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) who oversees the contest.

But most of the work done for each individual host country is jettisoned after each show. And so when Bedford pitched for doing the brand strategy for the 70th celebrations, she pointed out that Eurovision’s overarching brand was pretty nebulous.

“They obviously have a cultural behemoth of a brand that exists in people’s heads,” she says. “But if we were going to put it on paper, and say what the assets are associated with that, there was very little to communicate.”

The EBU wanted the new identity to work better on digital platforms – the previous one had stacked elements that could become cluttered when scaled down – and it needed to have stronger trademark protections. They also wanted PALS to incorporate the 70th celebrations into the new look.

The refresh took ten months, and Bedford worked with more than 20 freelance collaborators, from type designers and 3D artists, to specialists in youth culture and sports PR, who helped them think about reaching new audiences.

There is a new beating heart logo, which can respond and be adapted to different host nations, performers or campaign themes. For the upcoming anniversary, it has 70 layers, to represent each year of the contest’s history.

The core visual assets have been consolidated into a single hand-drawn marque, to create more consistency. And a new bespoke typeface, Singing Sans, replaces Gotham, to build in more personality and “create more ownership of the contest’s typographic voice.”

Martin Green, the director of the Eurovision Song Contest, welcomed the new look as being, “ bold, playful, and full of heart – just like the contest itself.”

But Bedford admits the process wasn’t always straightforward.

“It’s not been painless,” she says. “The design work chopped and changed until we found the sweet spot, and we went through so many different iterations to find something that reflects the heart of the contest.”

The PALS model, she points out, is perfectly set up to address these challenges in the creative process, as she is able to reset the team to address feedback and meet new requests. “It can be like Tetris,” Bedford explains.

Although fan reaction has been mixed – especially on Reddit –  Bedford is proud of what the team has created. “I knew it would get a reaction, but I wasn’t really prepared for the Reddit threads,” Bedford says.

“But the client is happy, and I think people get used to things like this. People absolutely fall in love with something they hated when they’ve seen it more than once, and in context.”

Behind its monumental concrete shell, a delicate glass volume emerges, balancing solidity with transparency while capturing the fleeting interplay of light and shadow throughout the day.

For the architects, light forms the essence of the Solar Locus project. Air Matters and 16 ARCH STUDIO develop the headquarters as a spatial vessel where illumination becomes a perceptual experience. The hermetic concrete shell, punctuated by circular apertures, diffuses sunlight into soft, fragmented beams that animate the interiors. As daylight shifts across surfaces, the building quietly registers the passage of time, encouraging occupants to reawaken to natural rhythms and cycles.

 

Curving motifs across the facade of the headquarters echo the celestial movement of the sun, from sunrise to sunset, while arched openings at ground level provide access to the plaza and side garden. These gestures introduce permeability and openness, contrasting with the solidity of the concrete mass. Between the heavy outer shell and the lighter glass volume lies a transitional atrium space, where air and light circulate freely, framing the sky as a vertical axis of orientation.

A workspace That Connects People, City, and Nature

 

Though monumental in form, Solar Locus emphasizes connection with its environment. The arched ground-floor passages encourage social interaction, extending the corporate headquarters into the public realm. Higher up, openings are oriented toward the city, linking the rooftop garden to the broader urban fabric. Air Matters and 16 ARCH STUDIO’s design cultivates inward reflection and outward engagement, positioning the headquarters as a shared urban landmark.

 

Balancing mass and void, transparency and solidity, the Solar Locus headquarters distills architecture to its structural and material essence. Its interplay of light transforms daily movements into moments of perceptual engagement, inviting a deeper awareness of time, space, and nature.

‘Sailing Castle’ installation arrives in Tainan

 

Taiwanese artist Cheng Tsung Feng brings his Sailing Castle installation to the historic West Central District of Tainan, where the work rises along the city’s canals near the site of a former shipyard from the Japanese colonial period. Conceived as an architectural fleet frozen at sea, the large-scale timber structure reinterprets the cityscape as a constellation of ships, reflecting on Tainan’s four centuries of Han cultural history. Through its layered wooden sails, the installation invites visitors to experience the city’s architectural heritage as a voyage that moves simultaneously across time, memory, and place.

With Sailing Castle, Cheng Tsung Feng crystallizes the silhouettes of city skylines into sculptural form. The Taiwanese artist reimagines architectural profiles as sails, transforming recognizable structures into components of a poetic fleet. For this Tainan edition, the artist drew inspiration from local landmarks such as Fort Zeelandia, Chihkan Tower, Confucius Temple, Nankunshen Daitian Temple, and Anping Kaitai Tianhou Temple. Rooflines, fortress walls, columns, and gables merge into the wooden structure, their outlines reinterpreted as overlapping sails that rise into a dynamic yet harmonious composition.

 

By day, the timber sails catch natural light and project a sense of vitality; by night, the structure shimmers with illumination, casting a glowing silhouette against the waterfront that recalls both the historic skyline and the spirit of maritime journeys. Visitors are encouraged to walk among the sails, pause on integrated seating, and feel the wind passing through the wooden lattice. This experience evokes the sensation of boarding a ship ready to depart. For Paris Design Week 2025 (find designboom’s ultimate guide here), Design Disco Club, a week-long exhibition running until September 12th, 2025, organized by publishing house Pli office, takes over the Rem Koolhaas-renovated Lafayette Anticipations, reframing contemporary design through the energy of disco. Conceived by curator and founder of Pli office Christopher Dessus, with scenography by his design and interior architecture studio Paf atelier, the project gathers more than forty emerging designers, architects, and fashion houses to examine how creation today is driven by shifting industrial, human, and emotional rhythms.

 

The exhibition positions the disco theme as a structural metaphor. The reference point is the 1976 track Disco Inferno, where repetition, acceleration, and collective euphoria translate into design terms. Disco, in this reading, is a prism that reveals how labor bends under the weight of time, how repetition gives rise to both weariness and wonder, and how collective rhythms can reorder the values of creation.

Paf atelier’s scenography as temporal experiment

 

Scenography by the Paris-based team at Paf atelier translates these ideas into a spatial and perceptual experiment. Visitors step into a deep-blue floor punctuated by harsh light bursts, reflective surfaces, and theatrical shadows. Objects appear isolated or clustered, illuminated like performers in a nocturnal score. The composition draws on Baudelaire’s poem The Clock, where time fractures, suspends, and multiplies, destabilizing linear perception. Here, design is not displayed as a static form but as a constellation of pulses, interruptions, and rhythms—an environment closer to a dancefloor than a gallery.

 

Design Disco Club brings together design studios such as Uchronia, Soft Baroque, and Odd Matter, and figures like François Azambourg, Samy Rio, and Fabien Cappello. Textile works and objects by Petite Friture and Lambert & Fils appear alongside emblematic fashion pieces from Marine Serre, Dior (Galliano), Jean Paul Gaultier, Marie-Ève Lecavalier, and Thierry Mugler, forming a cross-disciplinary assembly.

 

Design Disco Club functions as both an exhibition and a forum. Alongside the displays, talks organized with Isabelle Moisy-Cobti and the Fonds de Dotation Quartus open space for reflection on architecture, design, and fashion. The event also coincides with the release of JTM – Disco Inferno, the second issue of Pli office’s magazine.
