Unusual Objects: Mirrors Inspired by Baggage Claim Conveyor Belts

I don’t consider air travel pleasant, so I’m always surprised when I see airport-inspired furniture; it’s the last experience I want to remember. Turkish designer/architect Müge Kahraman, however, sees beauty in baggage carousels, specifically in their serpentine conveyor belts. Thus her line of Baggage Claim Mirrors.

The two full-sized mirrors are called Baggage Claim O and Baggage Claim I, for obvious reasons. The tabletop unit is called Baggage Claim M, either for “medium” or “makeup.”

They’re available in six colors through Kahraman’s brand, Living Cult, though no prices are listed.

Xiaomi just destroyed Apple iPhone 17 Pro’s Camera Plateau in less than a week

The best never rest, as they say. As soon as Apple dropped its latest iPhone, companies jumped in to announce new devices. Nothing touted a September hardware launch, Meta announced the Meta Connect event, and Xiaomi’s been the most aggressive, dropping news on its latest flagship. I say the most aggressive because what Xiaomi’s doing isn’t riding the Tech-tember wave, it’s quite literally putting the iPhone in its crosshairs. Revealed just yesterday to the press, Xiaomi’s 17 Pro Max has a pretty impressive trick up its sleeve… or its plateau, so to speak.

The upcoming flagship boasts a design (and name) that’s quite similar to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. You’ve got a simple back with the massive camera plateau and lenses, but unlike the one on the iPhone 17 Pro series, this one also packs a screen. Xiaomi made this announcement via its official Weibo page, revealing a first look of the 17 Pro Max while also pretty much confirming that it was skipping the 16 Pro series (which would have launched this year) entirely. This means not only are they locking horns with Apple on a design front, they’re also effectively skipping a generation so that both flagships have the exact same name. I wonder what Apple’s lawyers would think!

The official word on the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is still fairly limited, and we’ve only got one image to go by, but it’s enough to sort of chart Xiaomi’s product evolution. This isn’t the first time Xiaomi’s put a screen on the back of a phone. The Mi 11 Ultra had a tiny display too, and this feels like the natural upgrade to that. However, with the way the display sort of wraps around the two camera lenses, it’s a lot like the Mix Flip 2 or even the new flip phones from Samsung and Motorola. The screen covers the entire plateau, with what I assume are the two main cameras – the primary shooter and the periscope telephoto shooter.

You’d probably wonder why this Pro phone only has 2 camera lenses, but there’s a third one hidden right below it. Beside the flash is a third lens, existing outside the camera plateau, with Leica branding on the side. What these lenses are capable of capturing is something only time can tell, but it’s truly remarkable how Xiaomi just took a mere 6 days to look at the iPhone 17 Pro’s camera plateau and go ‘yeah, we can do you one better’.

The image shows a clock widget on the secondary screen, but it could easily become as useful as a rear-facing viewfinder or even a notification center. We’ve seen Nothing create a Glyph Matrix for its 3rd gen flagship, although the excitement died down pretty fast as people raged over the obscenely high price tag for the phone. Given that Xiaomi’s previous flagship was also in the same $700+ price range, it only makes sense that if someone had to choose a cutting-edge phone with a rear display, they’d choose a vivid color one over a low-res Glyph Matrix… but more importantly, it really shows that camera bumps are dead space that can be efficiently utilized. Now until Apple figures out that a Camera Plateau can be turned into a Dynamic Plateau by slapping a screen on, we’re just going to have to see what Xiaomi pulls off with this phone.

Ahead of Connect 2025, Meta inadvertently leaks smart glasses with built-in display

Meta has been selling variants of smart glasses in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica successfully since 2019. There are two models of Ray-Ban-branded Meta smart glasses already on the market, and if the latest leaked video is anything to go by, another pair of eyewear may be on the horizon: even two new models are possible. But before we speculate, let’s address the elephant in the room.

Meta is planning to use the annual ‘Meta Connect’ conference slated for Wednesday, September 17, as a launchpad to introduce its next big iteration of eyewear: the company’s first display-enabled smart glasses. This may not be outrightly confirmed, but it is revealed by an inadvertently shared video on the Meta YouTube channel. The video was later taken down.

At the Connect keynote, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is likely to announce consumer-ready smart glasses with a display. This possibility has been rumored for a long time. However, the possibility was evident in the unlisted and now-removed video, which briefly showcased the new pair of Ray-Ban-branded glasses featuring a built-in display, along with a wristband that will likely be used to control the eyewear.

Meta’s goof-up to give off the surprise just days ahead of the official launch may seem funny at first, but if you look closely, it could be a calculated measure to create hype leading up to the Meta Connect 2025 event. However it is, the video had some information to devour which should have us intrigued. First, it showed Meta | Ray-Ban, Display branding. It shows glasses with a fixed display, visible on the right eye, and a wristband that will let users control the smart glasses with hand gestures.

There is a glimpse of how the glasses will let the user use built-in Meta AI to ask questions, navigate using the map displayed on the eyewear, or use the eEMG wristband to write a message or reply to chats. According to a CNBC report, the Meta glasses with HUD is codenamed Hypernova, and a separate information notes that the glasses could weigh about 20 grams heavier than the predecessor at 70g and are likely to cost $800 out of the box, Bloomberg had reported.

Of course, the leaked video does not give out information regarding the specification and the glasses’ core competence, but it does allow us to arrive at a conclusion that this pair of smart glasses with a display is going to launch at Meta’s annual Connect developer conference. The glasses will be Ray-Ban branded and should be worth their price. Would you be interested in this Meta eyewear?

Who would be your dream design conference speakers?

We’re fully in the swing of design event season, with creatives taking to stages around the world to share their work, and their insights.

We asked a range of designers to curate their dream design conference line-up. The rules were simple – they could pick three people, and were allowed a mix of living and dead designers (but they couldn’t all be dead).

Their eclectic suggestions feature lots of designers, but also artists, comedians and musicians…

Wayne Deakin – Ingels, Glaser, Grès

Bjarke Ingels for his bold optimism, Milton Glaser for timeless spark, and Madame Grès for her perfection turned into poetry.

I’ve gone super wide in time, style and disciplines of design because the mix, from physical to graphic, is where the most interesting ideas are emerging today in my mind.

First, Bjarke Ingels. A Danish architect who thinks big, takes risks, and proves sustainability doesn’t have to be safe or dull. He makes important ideas playful. That is design with an attitude I love.

Next, Milton Glaser. I had the privilege of working with him when I was younger and he is a personal inspiration. To bring him back on stage would be electric. He understood design is not decoration – it’s is about ideas, culture, and humanity as one.

Finally, Madame Grès. A sculptor at heart, she transformed fabric into form with a mathematical precision. Someone who chased perfection and found poetry in the process. In today’s fast design culture, her discipline and craft would be a radical reminder.

Eve Warren – Bass, Goodspeed, AUGE Design

My first pick would be Elizabeth Goodspeed, an independent designer, art director, and writer specialising in branding, packaging, and editorial design.

As the US editor-at-large for It’s Nice That and author of the newsletter Casual Archivist, she brings a unique perspective on design history and how it connects to contemporary practice.

I’ve followed her on socials for years and always find her take on design both refreshing and strikingly self-aware amongst the naysayers.

My second pick would be the team behind AUGE Design, a fantastic agency based in Florence and Milan. I adore their approach to food and drink packaging, often rooted in incredible typography craft, and their food art direction consistently elevates their work beyond convention. They are best in class.

Thirdly, I would go for Saul Bass. I was a huge Hitchcock fan when I was younger, and I loved Bass’s approach to film, animation and identity design. His craft still resonates today, as his work continues to stand the test of time. I bet he would have a story of two!

Darren Richardson – Kauffer, Dumbar, Myerscough

The young artist Edward McKnight Kauffer was commissioned by London Underground’s visionary CEO Frank Pick. The posters promoted the range of locations; his modernist art celebrated the energy of the new machine age and urban life. This laid the way for future commercial graphic designers and the industry we know today.

Gert Dumbar’s work has been a constant influence throughout mine and, no doubt, many designers’ careers. There’s a deep intellectual quality to his work, yet it is always strikingly simple in its execution. Staying in style for four decades is a rare quality – I want him to share the secret.

I met Morag Myerscough in 1986 at The Design Solution while on placement. Her transformation from graphic designer to a global graphic artist is inspiring and fascinating. The relationship she has with colour is a story everyone needs to hear.

Darren Richardson is creative director and co-founder at Gardiner Richardson.

Anna Hamill – Lynch, Bjork, Ilori

If you haven’t watched David Lynch’s The Idea Dictates Everything, please go grab a coffee and watch now. He’s someone who thought big and small across everything from sound to costume design, location, casting to dialogue.

He could create worlds and feelings through silence and unusual shots. Someone who followed intuition and collaborated to really challenge convention and create films that people either loved or hated. But they always made you think.

Bjork’s name immediately conjures up images. The swan dress was so iconic when I was growing up, as was her music. I would love to hear her talk about where she goes for creative inspiration, what influences her and how she thinks about the world.

She’s such an original and unique soul; the world needs more totally one-off thinkers like her.

I challenge anyone to look at one of Yinka Ilori’s designs and not smile. I love the full-throttle use of colour, joyful patterns and that it’s all underpinned by traditions and heritage that are true to him and his background.

But he’s not just dusted off old things, he’s reimagined them for contemporary culture. I also love that he’s created a community of architects and designers to take his designs into full-scale architectural projects. I’d love to hear more about how he protects his styles and ideas as he expands to different mediums.

Anna Hamill is London managing director at drinks brand specialists Denomination.

Teresa Ferreira – Rams, Bayer, Ulm

Dieter Rams, as his ability to elevate the mundane into objects of quiet beauty is exactly why I fell in love with design as a discipline that shapes daily life. He also represents restraint and clarity in a world of visual noise, proof that “less, but better” never goes out of style.

Herbert Bayer for the way he bridged art, design, and architecture, truly embodying the Bauhaus belief that design is a holistic force rather than a siloed practice. That perspective feels so relevant to branding today: it isn’t only about aesthetics, it’s also cultural, social, and deeply connected to how people experience the world.

Elliot Ulm, because he shows that design culture isn’t just about rules and history, but also about laughing at ourselves and questioning the status quo. I love his humour, his impersonation of Steve Jobs and the way he exposes the frustrations and quirks of our industry.

Craig Oldham – Not a designer

My dream speaker at a design conference doesn’t have to be a designer. I’d be so excited by someone I’ve never heard from or one that doesn’t lead by a reputation.

Someone not of my community, my background, skin colour, or sexuality, whose identity is formed from their own lived experience not from the work they do.

Someone whose work is not something there to hide behind, lead what they have to say, or be a mouthpiece for their agency, but is something that is an assembly of their outlook on creativity, politics, and life. I think that would actually benefit the obvious and perpetuated pitfalls we see across the board at design conferences.

Craig Oldham is founder of Office Of Craig.

Julia Grandfield – de Botton, Peitz, Klimt

Alain de Botton is not a traditional designer, but an incredible writer on life, relationships and philosophy. At this moment with the rise of the “philosopher-builder” I’d like to hear his take on how we can design AI that can help humans flourish. What does an AI that you can have a healthy relationship with look and feel like?

Sam Peitz designs software that feels like it has weight, light and substance with a distinctly human-made charm. Artefacts that you want to interact with even when you feel sick of screens. I’d love to see a detailed, “how it’s made” session behind one of his experiments.

I love Hilma Af Klimt’s paintings, and am often struck by how they look like they could have been made very recently. What would Hilma be painting in 2025? Maybe it would give us a hint at the aesthetics and sensibilities of the next hundred years.

Richard Edgerton – Lee, Bowie, Wolff

Great design is really just storytelling, creating concepts that move people. Stewart Lee does this so well, his rhythm, timing and surprise keep you hooked, just like great design should. I think we gain by looking outside design, because creativity is amplified when we learn from unexpected places.

David Bowie reinvented himself constantly, yet always felt authentic. His work fused music, theatre, fashion, and identity into powerful stories of change.

He showed that design isn’t about one style, but about creating meaning through reinvention. Designers can learn from his courage to evolve while staying true.

Michael Wolff understood brand before most people knew it existed. He shows that design isn’t decoration, it’s meaning, identity, and imagination brought to life.

His curiosity and clarity opened doors for generations of designers. Learning from him reminds us to design with depth, humanity, and fearless originality.

Dani Molyneux – Coppola, Campe, Jones/Goude

Director Sofia Coppola. I know she’s not a designer, but cinema is a real influence for me. I love the mood and style of her work – full of atmosphere and nuance. I get a lot more out of design conferences when they mix up the disciplines.

Chris Campe aka All Things Letters. I’m currently interviewing Chris for my Explore series, so I’m slightly obsessed with her work right now.

I’m inspired by her daily practice and commitment to the craft. I’m thinking a talk by her would give me a good boost of motivation to make something.

Last one is a bit of a cheat because it’s two people. I want to see artist Grace Jones and designer Jean Paul Goude talk through their collaborative work. It sounds like it was a volatile relationship, but I imagine it was this clash of personalities and ideas that brought about some truly iconic work.

Fantastic Industrial Design Case Study: Creating a Custom Orthotic, Fast, with Formlabs

Here’s a great piece of design, executed in a hurry. Unfortunately the designer never names himself, so we have no idea who he is or how to link back to him.

The anonymous designer was visited by a colleague, who had recently injured his hand and was wearing an uncomfortable orthotic.

The designer resolved to design and produce a better one, custom-fit to the colleague’s hand. Said colleague wouldn’t be in town for long, so the job was done in a rush. The SnugFit 3D scanning app, orthotic design software caleld Spentys and Formlabs SLA and SLS printers all played a crucial role.

While we generally seek out printed case studies, this one was presented on video only, and is roughly two minutes long:

Designing Healthcare Access with Empathy and Innovation

The WE app, a 2025 Honoree in the Core77 Design Awards, represents a thoughtful exploration of how design can mediate between vulnerable users and complex systems. Developed by QIMU Design, with designers Shuting Jiang and Tianyue Wu, the project asks what it means to create tools that do more than solve functional problems—they create trust, dignity, and belonging.

The design team began with a fundamental insight: immigrant women navigating healthcare in a new country often encounter not one but multiple layers of friction. Language, cultural expectations, and opaque bureaucracies intertwine, producing not just logistical hurdles but emotional strain. Rather than attempting to “fix” users’ abilities, Jiang and Wu reframed the challenge as a systemic design problem. How could technology serve as a bridge without replacing the human relationships that make healthcare meaningful?

The answer emerged in a hybrid model. WE’s AI assistant provides translations optimized for medical contexts, but more importantly, it frames information in ways that empower decision-making. At the same time, the platform offers in-person companions who accompany women to appointments, ensuring that empathy and reassurance are not sacrificed in the pursuit of efficiency. This pairing illustrates a critical design insight: tools alone rarely resolve vulnerability; it is the thoughtful choreography of digital and human touchpoints that makes an experience supportive.

This app helps women navigate healthcare when they don’t speak the language of their providers.

Through research and iterative testing, QIMU Design refined features such as simplified insurance comparisons and multilingual community forums. These are not flashy add-ons but carefully considered responses to real user needs. What makes WE compelling from a design perspective is its refusal to separate usability from dignity. Each interaction—whether reading policy options or entering a waiting room—was treated as an opportunity to reduce anxiety and build confidence. In doing so, Jiang and Wu show how design can operate not just at the level of interface, but at the level of systems and emotions. WE is less a product than a case study in how empathetic design can reimagine access to care for those most often left at its margins.

An Interactive Public Bench with User-Adjustable Seating

This ADP Bench (Adults Don’t Play) is by Copenhagen-based architecture/design firm Spacon.

Designed for public spaces, it provides user-adjustable seating for people of various heights.

Alternatively, the seats can also be used as table-height surfaces.

The bench is in production by Danish furniture manufacturer +Halle, which holds annual “briefings:” Brainstorming sessions for designers and architects, built around a different theme each time, with the intent of exploring public behavior in common spaces. This year’s briefing, from which the ADP emerged, was “Playing.”

“We had the chance to study playing from a social scientific standpoint, immerse ourselves in the mental triggers that surround the theme and share those in critical discussions with our peers. Having the feedback from the other skilled designers (Philippe Malouin and Raw-Edges) was a designer-to-designer dialogue we had longed for,” Svend Jacob Pedersen, Founding Partner, Spacon, reflects.

Subtle play

The starting point for the ADP bench is interaction and, ultimately, personal ownership of a piece of furniture in the public realm. But interestingly, the research began elsewhere. In the urge or compulsion to find symmetry or align objects that are chaotic or misaligned, we hear Pedersen:
“We struggled with the theme at first. Asking ourselves, how do you contribute with something valuable in this category? To answer this question, we examined the engaging characteristics of symmetry,” says Pedersen, and continues, “We looked at toys, particularly a box of Lego, and the attraction to organise the chaos and take personal ownership of the order created. That’s the fundament. A businessman in a public space playing with a bench seat is built on that same theory. Proving that interaction with the world empowers.”

Align the groove

Across the ADP Bench is a graphic element that speaks volumes without ever shouting. A quiet, but distinct graphic, speaking to the instinctual behaviour of wanting to adjust the seats to form a straight line.

“When looking at popular culture, internet memes, or viral connotations of symmetry compulsions, we found a picture of a sewer cover with a street line painted across it; the lock just turned a little to create a misalignment. This image communicates directly to the human temptation to want to turn the cover to make it right. And that image was something we ended up translating to a multifunctional bench, in a very direct way,” Pedersen explains.

Hybrid use
The wooden ADP Bench can be seen as an interactive mental trigger and a hybrid set of seats and tables. Mimicking a classic piano stool with a swivel, the ADP Bench can be adjusted to serve as a set of low, standard, or high seats mixed with table height options. Included are, of course, all the measures in between, with endless combinations.

“Every function has a purpose in the ADP bench; at first you might want to sit down alone with a laptop and a coffee, then you might need people sitting next to you, which means you wire all the seats back down and shapeshift the bench,” says Pedersen.
Graphic language
The ADP Bench is a conversation starter, especially with the transformative characteristics of the bench. You may even need to negotiate with the person next to you on how you want to sit.
“The playful tension of the ADP bench brilliantly captures the behaviour around taking ownership of public space. That the ADP bench successfully speaks to the public using a distinct language is a testament to Spacon & X’s ability to establish a contract with the user of the furniture they create. At +Halle, this captures the fundament of being shaped by behaviour,” +Halle reflects.

“In today’s public realm, communication is vital, but it requires that the furniture that has something to say,” Pedersen concludes.

KELUN designs BOND residence in Hakusan City

 

BOND is a residence in Hakusan City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, designed by KELUN to maximize daylight and privacy within a densely built neighborhood. Surrounded by existing buildings on three sides and facing a road to the north, the site presented limited opportunities for natural light.

 

The design introduces a 40 sqm courtyard positioned on the north side of the house. This open void functions as the primary light source, channeling daylight deep into the interior while also supporting natural ventilation. Enclosed by walls, the courtyard establishes a private yet semi-outdoor space that shields the interior from surrounding views.

To enhance security and privacy, the architectural team at KELUN places no windows on the facade facing the road. Instead, the courtyard organizes the plan and creates bright, open living spaces without requiring curtains or other screening elements. Through this strategy, BOND residence achieves a balance between seclusion and openness, tailored to the constraints of the surrounding apartment complex neighborhood.
