Luminate, a healthcare company focused on at‑home solutions for cancer patients, has introduced Lily. It’s a wearable device that uses gentle scalp compression to lessen hair loss caused by chemotherapy. The technology is built into a discreet, helmet‑like structure that can be worn at home or in a clinic, offering patients a sense of control over one of the most emotionally challenging side effects of treatment. Research shows that fear of losing hair can discourage some individuals from starting or completing therapy, making Lily’s approach both medically and psychologically valuable.

The design work was commissioned to BLOND, a studio known for blending functionality with aesthetic appeal. Their task went beyond polishing the device’s appearance; they also created a soft, recyclable PET‑felt carry case and refined the user experience to feel intuitive and dignified. The result is a product that looks more like a lifestyle accessory than a piece of clinical equipment, helping users feel comfortable wearing it in public and even proud to own it.

Key to Lily’s success is its inclusive design. The helmet is lightweight and softly contoured to accommodate a wide variety of head shapes. Adjustable Velcro straps, which magnetically reattach, make fitting quick and easy, while a removable antimicrobial chin strap ensures hygiene. A subtle capacitive touch interface lets users start or stop treatment without fiddling with buttons, and discreet orientation markers guide correct placement. All of these features were tested through multiple prototypes, each iteration improving comfort, fit, and usability while meeting strict regulatory standards for medical devices.

Beyond the hardware, Lily’s carry case reflects the same thoughtful approach. Made from soft, recycled PET felt, the case protects the device and adds a touch of elegance, reinforcing the idea that medical tools can be both functional and beautiful. This attention to material sensitivity aligns with Luminate’s broader mission to reduce side effects through at‑home solutions that fit seamlessly into daily life. By drawing inspiration from everyday objects, the team ensured Lily feels less clinical and more personal, turning a therapeutic aid into an empowering accessory.

On the Carnot-Ravinelle Campus in Nancy, France, Agence Vulcano-Gibello completes the building housing the Faculty of Law, a structure that reshapes circulation and gives the university a renewed presence within the city. A limestone concrete-clad gallery anchors the project, replacing an old demolished building and now connecting the surrounding academic blocks while opening the complex toward a revitalized courtyard garden.

 

The southern facade of the gallery is defined by a Burgundy limestone claustra, a perforated stone lattice that tempers heat gain while creating patterns of light and shadow. This screen, supported by a single central column, shelters entrances and service areas while echoing the tones and textures of neighboring facades. To the north, the gallery is more transparent, with broad openings that draw in diffused daylight. Finished in lime plaster, the north elevation mirrors the surrounding courtyard buildings, creating a continuity of materiality that emphasizes the rigor of the composition against the softness of the landscaped garden.

Agence Vulcano-Gibello prioritizes environmental solutions

 

The University Palace, inaugurated in 1862, once brought together the faculties of Arts, Sciences, Law, and Medicine in a single institution. The intervention by the French team at Agence Vulcano-Gibello is inserted between late 19th- and early 20th-century structures and a contemporary building by Christian François and Patricia Henrion, forming an L-shaped plan that accommodates academic hubs such as CEU, IPAG, IRT, and the College of Law, Economics, and Management.

 

Visible from the main entrance, the garden of the project transforms a former rear access into a welcoming arrival space. Designed with minimal maintenance in mind, the planting absorbs rainwater and generates a cooler microclimate in summer, counterbalancing the mineral presence of the campus architecture. This green core reinforces the architects’ strategy of prioritizing simple and reliable environmental solutions, with the high-performance building envelope ensuring thermal comfort and the refurbished existing structures achieving improved energy efficiency.

 

Inside, a central double staircase with broad landings organizes movement vertically. The detailing, solid wood furniture, ample natural light, and clearly defined circulation support academic work and informal gathering. The intervention strengthens the university’s sense of identity by harmonizing with its historic neighbors while introducing a contemporary vocabulary, making the Faculty of Law both more cohesive and more welcoming.

retro-looking Atari Gamestation Go has built-in games

 

Atari and My Arcade team up to release Gamestation Go, a classic handheld console that brings back the days of retro gaming. Equipped with more than 200 built-in games, the device uses a seven-inch full-color high-resolution display. It is portable enough to bring in bags so gamers can play it anywhere they go, but if they want a bigger screen, they can connect the gadget to their TV screens or monitors using an HDMI cable. 

 

Looking at the retro-looking Atari Gamestation Go’s front, the tactile buttons stand out over the Atari-themed coloring. There’s a traditional directional pad on the left part, alongside the trackball originally designed with rolling inputs and the paddle controller for games that require rotary movement. On the other side, the numeric keypad seemingly camouflages against the orange and yellow strips in the background. Above it comes the set of action buttons that illuminate depending on the game played.

The device measures 5.67 inches in length, 2.67 inches in width, and less than three-quarters of an inch in thickness. It includes a pop-out stand for tabletop use without holding the console, and this feature allows players to use the HDMI connection or external controllers while the device rests on a surface. The retro-looking Atari Gamestation Go includes WiFi capability to let the console connect to networks and access firmware updates. External controllers can also be connected through the USB-C ports, which give users additional options for play.

 

The device has a built-in rechargeable battery. Charging is completed with a USB-C cable, and the unit includes both the cable and a USB AC adapter. A full charge provides between four and five hours of continuous playtime, and the battery can be recharged in a standard wall socket or through other USB power sources. So far, the retro-looking Atari Gamestation Go comes with more than 200 built-in games, including Pac-Man and titles from Jaleco and PIKO International. At the present time, the pre-orders are open, with the expected delivery time starting October 2025.

meet the graduates behind UAL showcase

 

Detailed profiles document how designers test, refine and adapt unconventional materials: grinding down food scraps, cultivating living organisms, or weaving synthetic hair from recycled threads. This behind-the-scenes perspective reveals both technical skill and experimental risk-taking, helping potential collaborators understand the process behind the innovation before connecting directly through Showcase.

 

For example, Genevieve Carr, multidisciplinary designer and material researcher, presents ‘Nailed’ – her graduate project that turns nail salon waste into a 3D printing filament, used to create nails inspired by botanical drawings.

With a background in accessories, she’s exploring its potential for wearable design and collaboration, and through Showcase, her work is discoverable by anyone looking to commission or hire talent in this area.

 

As she explains about her work, ‘The great thing about this material is that I can snap the nails up and put them back in the machine and do the whole process again. It was really important to me to try to keep it as closed loop as possible and create the smallest amount of waste. So, if this project were to be scaled up, it would be important to me to keep this.’

Similarly, ‘Redefining Palm Oil’ by Huda Ashari, an agile architecture graduate training as a regenerative designer at the intersection of science, technology and design, redefines palm oil as a solution rather than a problem. A key innovation as part of the project is POME Bioplastic, created from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME), a waste byproduct. Bacteria transform POME into a biodegradable material that enhances soil health and promotes plant growth, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics. 

 

‘These bioplastic bags that I made through the short chain lengths would take about six months to decompose. In the UK especially, we’ve not really tackled an alternative for single use plastic bags. The bags that we use now, I think they call them forever bags in Tesco or Waitrose, they’re still a blend of things, and even though they’re biodegradable, I don’t think it’s as quick as six months,’ Huda mentions.

Jacob Tucker, product and furniture design graduate, uses Showcase to present Precrete, a water-purifying sink made from tabby concrete, an ancient process using oyster shells. Accompanied by a ‘mess’ table made from scrap wood, the project provides practical applications for industries concerned with water sustainability and ecological design.

 

‘It‘s a really ancient process where you collect the shells, after the organism has died of course, and then you fire them, which can be done in a number of ways. It’s very similar to how concrete works. With concrete, you’re firing limestone to 900° or above sometimes and I’m firing shells to 900°; you could do it over a bonfire. I did it in a ceramics kiln. Once you’ve fired it, it goes from calcium carbonate, which is the important component, that’s what is so prevalent in limestone as well, to calcium oxide. If you’re burning something, you’re getting rid of all the carbon and then you add water once it’s out of the kiln and it becomes calcium hydroxide, which is the material you want. It’s what’s closest to cement,’ describes Jacob.

DesignStudio relaunches as Further with magnetic new brand

DesignStudio is relaunching today as Further, as a “signal to the world” that it’s evolving into a different kind of agency.

The rebrand comes after the 16-year-old studio, which has offices in London, New York and Sydney, bought two new companies to extend the services it offers clients, from campaigns to events.

“It’s our bet on the future based on a belief in human creativity,” said DesignStudio CEO Paul Stafford.

Stafford says the studio’s leadership started thinking about the future of the business “just after Covid.”

DesignStudio built its reputation creating new identities for clients like Eurostar, the Premier League, and perhaps most notably, Airbnb. But Stafford says they wanted to move beyond “the bombastic moments of businesses pivoting and rebranding,” to work on more of their clients’ commercial strategy.

Stafford and his team started looking at ways they could “level up” DesignStudio’s capability to deliver these broader offerings, and decided the best approach was to, “go out and buy the best in market, and bring them to the table.”

Last year they bought motion design studio Analog and immersive experience agency Pixel Artworks, and united the three business as the Further Group. Further acquisitions will follow.

The new collective is backed by Waterland Private Equity, and Stafford says that in both the creative and financial partnerships, the studio was determined to ensure “cultural alignment.”

“You can do all the scientific due diligence, digging into past work and asking the right questions,” Stafford says. “But in this field, we’re all experts at selling ourselves. So a lot of it comes down to sitting in pubs together, so people let their guard down a bit, and you can understand what’s important to them.”

The new Further identity

He says that when it came to choosing the right investors, it was vital the financiers appreciated how creative businesses are different.

“We don’t have 12 months’ visibility on our pipeline, and I guarantee that is the same for every design company,” he says. “So we needed people who understood our industry, and who have an appreciation that we don’t necessarily run things in the way that big corporates do.

“We’re more about showing the team a flag, and giving them something to charge at, rather than building really detailed one-pagers on how our values and goals are going to trickle down.”

Stafford explains that Further will still work on rebrands, but these will form part of the studio’s wider services, alongside campaigns, product launches, events and digital projects.

“We’re going to work on what we consider a client’s landmark moments,” he explains. “Yes, they’ve got to be consistent, and roll out all these things in different versions, and languages, and territories.

“But they need to keep seeding these landmark moments, where communities gather, where fandoms are born, and where people start building this love and affinity for the brand.”

In part, Stafford sees the agency’s new focus as rising above the “crappy campaign work” he predicts AI is going to hoover up.

“We need to play in the high impact, high value moments,” he says. “That’s where creativity is really needed, where the world needs to see something that hasn’t been seen before, where genius minds come together to create and curate.”

To reflect this new direction, Stafford says it was important to change the name from DesignStudio.

“It had to happen, because we are entering a new era of what agencies need to do, and we have a completely new offer,” he explains. “The name DesignStudio, and the brand DesignStudio, didn’t capture that any more.

“It’s a risk,” he accepts. “But I think the risks of not changing the name way outweigh the risks of changing the name,” he says.

“It signals to the world that this is a significant shift. And I think the fact that we’re willing to drop the name, because we believe in this new agency, signals to the rest of the business that they should believe in it too.”

In fact, Stafford says he and co-founder Ben Wright always thought DesignStudio was “the shittiest name possible.”

“We struggled to come up with a name, and said, ‘My God, let’s just call it DesignStudio.’ There was always a discussion about whether it was genius or idiocy.”

And the agency’s subsequent success convinced Stafford that in the end, a studio name is far less important than its work.

“The name doesn’t really matter,” he says. “It’s what you create that becomes representative of who you are.”

The name Further, he says, is “a lot more considered than DesignStudio was at the time.” It reflects both the enhanced and expanded work the new studio wants to do, as well as the internal drive to push creativity beyond the tried and tested.

“This name marries our intent, our desire, and our vision of where the business is going,” he says.

To accompany the new name, Further also has a new visual brand, overseen by design director Lorenzo Di Cola.

“We set out to build an identity for an agency that didn’t yet exist,” Di Cola says. “It had to flex across brand, content, experience and motion. It had to showcase wildly different kinds of work. And most importantly, it had to reflect the collaborative spirit and creative energy of the new business we’re building.”

Stafford admits that working on an agency’s own brand is always “a painful experience” and the team had to balance and channel the wide range of input they received. “Everyone in our business is a brand expert, so everyone has an opinion,” he laughs.

There is a new crafted wordmark, with striking 3D motion expressions, while the type family includes Grotesk’s Mono, Peta, Giga and Mega.

“We’ve always believed, from the days of Airbnb, that you need to build something so compelling that it draws people towards it,” Stafford says. “That’s how you build community, and fandom, and advocacy – from the inside out.

“So our new brand is built around the idea of magnetism – such a force that it pulls things towards it.”

Stafford also wanted a brand that would feel “provocative” and make “some people uncomfortable.” This, he believes, will resonate with and attract clients who want to be pushed out of their comfort zone, while filtering out those who would prefer to play it safe.

“We’ve always gone into pitches against businesses like the Omnicoms and WPPs,” Stafford says. “And I wanted us to feel like the antithesis of them. We want to be the agency that, win or lose, people remember us because we scared them a bit.”

Stafford says pivoting the business in this way has thrown up challenges, but his biggest learning has been to remain present and available to listen to people’s concerns.

He thinks this communication matters less in the formal moments – like all-hands meetings and company emails – than in the informal ones.

“I think it’s about turning up at an event in the pub with the team,” he says. “When someone’s three pints in, and is confident enough to ask the boss, ‘What’s going on?’ Where you connect with people, on a real level, is really important.”

But despite these challenges, Stafford is ready to embrace start this new chapter. “I feed off moments like this,” he says. “It gets me energised.

“I feel like there is an opportunity right now, to figure out what is the role of a design business in the future. And I feel like we’re in a good position to do that. It’s nerve-wracking, but it’s exciting.”

Mesure Studio completes a seaside residence nestled into the steep slopes of Forêt-Fouesnant on the coast of Brittany, France, that pairs experimental low-carbon construction with strategies for thermal comfort in shifting climates. The 100 square-meter house is defined by its raw interior of exposed natural cork and an envelope of poured-in-place concrete, into which sheets of polished stainless steel are inlaid to create reflective mineral silhouettes. 

 

Rather than replicate the pitched granite-roofed houses typical of the region, the architects developed a contemporary interpretation of the lean-to form. The roofline is lifted from the ground and detached from the gable, a gesture that protects key sightlines while generating a belvedere overlooking the pond and the Atlantic. This elevated volume also shelters a shaded garden below, designed to mitigate heat during increasingly intense summers and provide cover during periods of rain. As the landscape rises toward the house, the garden extends upward to crown the building with a green roof.

 

Large exterior curtains slide across the facade, filtering solar gain and accentuating the impression of the elevated volume floating lightly above the sloping ground. In this way, the house negotiates its exposure to sea winds, sunlight, and rain while sustaining visual continuity with the ocean horizon.

Low-carbon concrete as both structure and surface

 

The house’s concrete shell is treated as a crafted material, poured on-site using a low-carbon mix; its surfaces are articulated in multiple finishes — sanded, bush-hammered, smooth, and matt — so that each exposure responds to light differently. Mirror-polished stainless steel inserts embedded within the walls recall the geological origins of stone while producing fleeting reflections of the surrounding vegetation and sky. For outside use, the Paris- and Bretagne-based team at Mesure Studio chooses XS2 concrete for its resistance to saline air, eliminating the need for cladding or coatings that might weather poorly in a marine environment.

 

Inside, the architects leave insulation uncovered, with cork surfaces continuing the vegetal character of the shaded garden. This choice is both environmental and sensory, as cork improves acoustic absorption, regulates thermal comfort, and removes the need for secondary finishes such as linings or paint, reducing material layers and the project’s duration. The interior’s rawness contrasts with the luminous reflections cast by the embedded steel on the exterior.

Whenever the hybrid element is highlighted in a gadget, it piques my interest. More so when it is an audio accessory, such as headphones or earphones. I fancied the Streamline hybrid earphones concept from earlier this year for the ingenious method of having wired and wireless earphones in one. Yet another concept design sparks my interest in audio gear, especially headphones and earbuds.

The O-Scene Ear concept is a pair of wireless headphones that can be used as wireless earbuds depending on the requirement and mood. This is a best-case scenario for music lovers who want to have both headphones and earbuds handy, whether they are traveling, at the workplace, or working on their home workstation. This hybrid design has many advantages, including adaptability to varied scenarios like sports regimes, daily commute to work, or simply entertainment at home. More than anything else, these hybrid headphones look way cooler than your regular pair of cans.

The concept has been thought of very mindfully with focus on functional features, storage design, and seamless switching between the two modes. The storage case of the headphones is designed in a way that it can be integrated into the behind-the-ear form. When noticed closely, the section that comes around the ear is made out of a bendable hose material that ensures a comfortable wearing experience for people with any ear shape or size. What excites me the most is the earbuds mode, in which the charging case transforms into a carrying case for the cans. This happens as the magnetic tips at the ear end, which are the loop hose of the charging case, fold back magnetically. Each of the charging cases magnetically attaches to the other to turn into a small hanging bag for ultra portability and to show off your style.

Although these over-the-ear headphones are not your typical headphones with a headband connecting the two individual cans, they adopt a modern evolutionary design that eliminates the need for the headband. They typically are behind-the-ear headphones with a larger driver unit that sits flush on the ear when in headphone mode. Sound quality in the earbuds mode is also not detailed in one, still, I think it will be on par with the headphones. Yet again, this concept has left me stumbling over the same question: why aren’t audio gear makers thinking on the same lines?
