Burberry returns to Perks Field in Kensington, London, for the Summer 2026 show with a set design covered in earth and cube-shaped seats. The design of the set was built to connect the collection with the theme of British summer music events, such as concerts and festivals, and the country’s outdoors. The space hopes to bring together elements of landscapes and live performance environments. The tent is the central architectural feature, with its inner surface printed with a sky scene that shows clouds stretching across the fabric. It creates the impression of an open-air setting under the cover, supported by tall black truss towers that double as the lighting system.

 

Each truss tower inside the Burberry Summer 2026 show holds multiple rectangular light panels arranged vertically in groups along the height of the structures. These lights shine onto the runway and highlight the collection throughout as they are placed evenly across the runway length, creating a regular rhythm through the space. Speakers are also attached to the towers, playing the music that backdrops the show. The audience sits on cube-shaped blocks placed in straight rows, their surfaces resembling compacted soil. The rows of cubes were divided by the runway path in the middle, and their color matches the ground covered in an earth-toned material.

Daniel Lee, the brand’s Creative Director, explains that the idea of music as self-expression shaped the work. The looks, then, are influenced by how musicians dress on and off stage, and the styling includes elements from different musical genres, showing how clothing and sound both shape identity. The soundtrack of the show was directed by Benji B, a longtime Burberry collaborator. He used songs from the archive of Black Sabbath, a British band known for its influence on rock and metal, and the choice of this music connected directly to the history of UK sound culture and reinforced the collection’s link to music as performance.

+- Chess Set Concept: Modern Geometry and Accessibility Meet on the Board

Chess sets have traditionally relied on color and intricate figurative details to help players distinguish between sides, but this approach often creates barriers for people with visual impairments or those playing in low-light conditions. Most designers focus on making chess pieces more ornate or visually striking, yet few consider how the fundamental interaction with the game could be improved through thoughtful geometric design.

What makes the +- Chess set particularly compelling is how it tackles these accessibility challenges through pure geometric logic rather than decorative solutions. By using convex shapes for one side and concave shapes for the other, this concept design creates instant visual and tactile distinction that works equally well whether you’re looking at the board or navigating the game entirely through touch.

The pieces themselves follow a strict geometric vocabulary that feels both minimalist and purposeful. You get smooth, domed surfaces for the “+” side and scalloped, indented profiles for the “–” side. Of course, the board extends this geometric thinking beyond the pieces themselves. Rather than standard flat squares, the playing surface alternates between convex and concave areas that mirror the piece design. This creates a sculptural quality that transforms the entire chess set into a cohesive design statement while providing clear tactile boundaries for navigation during play.

The tactile experience becomes especially meaningful when you consider players with visual impairments. The geometric differences make it possible to distinguish between sides instantly through touch alone, while the undulating board surface provides clear orientation cues. You can run your fingers across the pieces and board, understanding the game state without relying on sight, making chess truly accessible to everyone.

That said, the visual impact remains striking for sighted players. The interplay between the smooth and textured surfaces creates dynamic shadows and visual interest that elevate chess from a simple board game to a sculptural art piece. The monochromatic color scheme lets the geometry take center stage, emphasizing form over decoration.

The choice of 3D-printed PLA reflects modern manufacturing sensibilities while keeping the concept environmentally conscious. At 455 × 455 × 100 mm, the set maintains a substantial presence without overwhelming the space, making it suitable for both serious play and display. The material choice also ensures consistent tactile feedback across all pieces, which becomes crucial for the accessibility features to work effectively.

You’ll notice how every design decision serves multiple purposes, from the pure aesthetic appeal to the practical accessibility benefits. This kind of thoughtful integration shows how good design can enhance experiences for everyone without compromising on visual appeal or functionality.

One of my hobbies is scrolling through Reels or TikTok, saving recipes, and then never trying them out. Well, I’ve decided to actually make some of these supposedly simple recipes, but sometimes they look easier than they are in real life. One thing that looks smooth in these videos is blending ingredients in a blender, yet the reality is often messier and more difficult than it appears. Perhaps my current blender is to blame, so I’m on the lookout for a better one.

The PASONA NATUREVERSE Pavilion, designed by the design labo Inc. for Expo 2025 Osaka, is conceived as a spiral structure inspired by the form of an ammonite. With a diameter of 43 meters, the pavilion establishes a spatial framework where themes of life, ecology, and the interconnection between humanity and nature are explored.

 

The ammonite form serves as both architectural reference and symbolic gesture, linking the micro- and macro-scale dimensions of natural systems. Visitors are guided along a spiraling path that evokes continuity and cyclical movement, while the geometry reinforces the concept of humanity as part of a broader ecological context.

design labo integrates sustainability with Cultural Context

 

For the design labo studio, environmental performance is integral to the design. The pavilion employs a water-based cooling system in which a thin film flows across the roof surface, promoting evaporative cooling and reducing the need for air-conditioning. Rainwater, collected alongside the rooftop water, is reused within the building for non-potable functions, reducing reliance on external resources.

 

Following the Expo, the pavilion is scheduled to be dismantled and reassembled on Awaji Island, a site recognized as one of Japan’s important ammonite fossil beds. This relocation extends the life of the structure and establishes a continuity between form, place, and geological history. Through its material strategy, environmental systems, and symbolic geometry, the PASONA NATUREVERSE Pavilion integrates sustainability with cultural and ecological reference, presenting architecture as a medium that bridges natural history and contemporary design practice.

Maurizio Cattelan, contemporary art’s notorious provocateur, is taking his wit from the gallery into the streets with Where is Maurizio?, a worldwide treasure hunt. To mark the release of We Are the Revolution, his latest limited-edition self-portrait sculpture, three works have been hidden across the globe, waiting to be found by the quickest and most dedicated seekers. The hunt begins in New York City on September 30th, 2025, when the first clue will be revealed on Avant Arte’s dedicated website.

Cities become Stages with ‘We Are the Revolution’ treasure hunt

 

The game spans three cities and three sculptures, with each discovery crowning a single winner. Cattelan turns what’s usually a private collecting ritual into a shared citywide adventure. The search turns cities into temporary stages, where passersby might stumble across an artwork that in other contexts requires years of waiting lists and high-stakes bidding.

 

The object at the heart of this chase is We Are the Revolution, a resin, hand-painted miniature that revisits one of the Italian artist’s most iconic gestures. Standing just 23 centimeters tall, the figure reprises his 2000 work La Rivoluzione Siamo Noi — itself a parody of Joseph Beuys’ felt suit and the dictum that ‘every man is an artist.’ Cattelan counters with the mischievous motto, ‘I am not really an artist,’ poking at the inflated myth of the contemporary creator. The work, mounted on a single nail, continues his long-running series of self-portrait miniatures that turn the artist himself into both subject and satire.

 

Alongside the three hidden sculptures, the edition is available more conventionally through a run of 1,000 pieces, each hand-painted, individually numbered, and accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity. While the treasure hunt versions will reward speed and luck, the wider edition is accessible via a draw system closing on October 24th, 2025.

Sofology and BAE Systems Digital Intelligence named best in-house teams

The winners of this year’s Inside Out awards for in-house creative teams have been announced. Now in their 12th year, the awards, “identify and celebrate creative excellence, stand-out work and in-house talent.”

They are run by the Inside Out community, whose mission is to give, “in-house creative leaders the connections, insights, knowledge and recognition that will get them to the highest levels of influence and persuasion within the brands they are a part of.”

At the awards ceremony in London, Sofology was named in-house team of the year, while BAE Systems Digital Intelligence won the best small in-house team, given to entrants with 10 people or fewer.

It was one of two awards given to the defence and security technology firm, which also scooped the prize for best brand transformation, which is “awarded to teams that have successfully redefined or revitalised a brand, demonstrating measurable shifts in brand perception.”

In 2022, BAE Systems consolidated various units into a new Data Intelligence business, which aims to “deliver a greater range of digital capabilities alongside leading cyber, intelligence and security expertise to an extensive portfolio of government, defence and commercial customers around the globe.”

BAE Systems is the largest manufacturer in the UK, and the biggest defence contractor in Europe, but has attracted controversy. In the past couple of years, its factories have been targeted by protests against its contracts with the Israeli armed forces, due to the ongoing war in Gaza.

Emma Sexton, founder of the Inside Out community, said the awards focus only on the creative merits of the entries.

“Inside Out exists to celebrate creativity and the people who make it happen,” she said. “Our awards recognise the talent, craft, and dedication of in-house creative teams – not the wider business activities of their employers.

“We believe that creative professionals deserve recognition for their work, wherever they are, and we keep our focus firmly on individuals and their achievements, not company politics.”

Another multiple winners on the night included:

Merlin Entertainments, whose Nemesis Reborn rebrand at Alton Towers won best visual design. Candy Holland, executive creative director at LEGOLAND Resorts and LEGOLAND Discovery Centres was also named in-house creative leader of the year.
Maintenance and repair company Johnson Controls, which won best motion graphics and animation, best campaign, and whose creative resources manager, Cait McEnery, won creative champion of the year.
Accounting software Xero, which won best video production and best implementation of technology within creative operations for its collaboration with Canva.
Mobile provider Three UK, which won best use of technology in creative execution and best collaboration with an external specialist for its AI-powered interview with trailblazing footballer Lily Parr, who died in 1978.

Addressing the ceremony, Sexton said that the awards reflected the ongoing rise of in-house creative excellence.

“Looking back at my opening speech from last year, there was a theme of in-house going from strength to strength, from being a whisper to a roar,” she said. “Even in the past 12 months, it is very clear that in-house creative teams have fully arrived and are taking up the space in the creative industry that you have always deserved.”

She said four main themes had emerged from the judging process, which characterised the best in-house work around. These were measurable business impact and ROI, innovation and strategic use of technology, high-quality craftsmanship, and collaboration.

And Sexton said that while AI is still “largely restricted for the majority of in-house creative teams,” it is starting to “impact creative execution” and is most impressive when it’s used as “an enabler, not a gimmick.”

Deloitte’s Pride postcards

Other awards went to Deloitte’s 368 team, which won best photography/illustration for its Pride postcards, Canva-owned Flourish, which won best ROI/results on a limited-budget project,and Checkout.com, which won best creative collaboration with marketing.

The NSPCC’s Leng or Liar video, which challenged influencers The Charvas to work out which online people they spoke to were real, and which were fake, was highly commended in two categories.

Sky Creative designer Amber Skipper won the rising star award, Sainsbury’s studio director Emily Morris won the outstanding contribution award, while the Inside Out special recognition award went to Phil Hobday.

A key figure in the UK Government’s communication service design centre, Design102, Hobday passed away last year.

“Phil Hobday was the creative force behind many of the UK Government’s most trusted and recognisable communications,” the Inside Out tribute said.

“With over 30 years as a designer and creative director, he transformed public sector design through leadership, innovation and unwavering standards. Phil helped to set the standards for creativity in government communications.”

Alastair Philip Wiper documents the inside of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, USA, in the photography project, The Secret City. In the series, the photographer captures the machinery and spaces inside the infrastructure, which was established in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project. The laboratory’s first purpose was to refine uranium and plutonium for the production of atomic bombs, and it became a town that was built quickly to house workers, with the population reaching 75,000 during World War II. The photographer’s name for the project is not random. It is because the community was called The Secret City, referring to its existence being hidden. Most residents did not know the purpose of their work until the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan in 1945.

 

After the war, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory changed its mission and became a national center for nuclear research, materials science, biology, energy studies, and computer technology. Today, it is one of the largest science and energy laboratories under the U.S. Department of Energy system. Through the photographs of Alastair Philip Wiper, viewers are afforded the inner workings of the laboratory, from the space housing the first continuously operating nuclear reactor in the world to the major facility of the most powerful reactor-based neutron source in the US. In the images, the photographer managed to document the spaces and what resides in them, including the old machinery and control stations as well as the upgraded tools used for the nuclear research.

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory site includes laboratories, hot cells, reactors, accelerators, computing centers, and utility lines. The design of the laboratory reflects its functions: large buildings for reactors, long corridors for accelerators, and shielded cells for radiochemical work. Utility drain lines manage water and waste produced during experiments. Control rooms operate reactors and accelerators. The facility combines steel, concrete, shielding materials, electronic systems, and high-power computing hardware. In Alastair Philip Wiper’s series, the photographer goes through these areas, even capturing the site’s first major project, the X-10 Graphite Reactor. It began operation in 1943 and ran until 1963 and was the first continuously operating nuclear reactor in the world. 

 

Its purpose was to prove that plutonium could be produced for nuclear weapons, and after the war, the reactor was used to generate the first nuclear electricity. It also produced radioisotopes for medicine, agriculture, and industry, and these isotopes were used for cancer treatments, crop studies, and industrial testing. Another major facility at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory that the photographer captured is the High Flux Isotope Reactor. It remains the most powerful reactor-based neutron source in the US, producing medical isotopes, including plutonium-238, which is used in NASA space missions. Inside the reactor pools, spent nuclear fuel is stored. The blue glow that appears in the water is known as Cherenkov radiation, which shows the presence of recently irradiated fuel.

A US-based laboratory that also studies biological materials

 

One important instrument at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory that Alastair Philip Wiper photographed is the MaNDi neutron diffractometer. It studies biological materials by scattering neutrons off samples to map atomic structures, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, MaNDi was used to investigate the structure of the SARS-CoV-2 protease. The data supported drug development research for the vaccines later on. 

 

The laboratory also houses the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center, where technicians handle radioactive isotopes inside hot cells using remote manipulators. This, alongside other setups, makes up the series The Secret City, which aims to present the once war-oriented research facility turned into a nuclear research laboratory.
