Can this flying DeLorean made out of Styrofoam take on the stress of time travel?

De Lorean DMC-12 has been an inspiration for countless design iterations all these years, right from the time it was first showcased to the world in the Back to the Future movie trilogy. Driven by Doc Brown to trigger time travel at the speed of 88 mph, the futuristic vehicle customized for the movie made this possible using a 1.21 gigawatt power source and flux capacitor.

The rear-engine two-seater sports car with its stainless steel body and gull-winged doors was a desirable object for motorheads, even more so, given its limited production run (approximately 9,000 units) in the early 80s. In fact, the DMC-12 went out of production even before the release of the movie. Now, a DIYer imagines the ionic car as a flying machine made out of an unassuming material. While flying cars are on the horizon, fueling our longing, Brian has a completely different interpretation of the two in this interesting project.

This one has been more than a year in making, as Brian finalized the basic form factor on the flying DeLorean using a mega-sized CNC router. The body is made out of Styrofoam panels encapsulating the carbon fiber frame (replacing the previous aluminum frame) and motorized louvers and doors. Talking of the ladder frame, it has carbon fiber tubes and forged carbon fiber corners that are carved using tow nd resin using a 3D printing technique. The thing has now been upgraded to have a tire-tilting mechanism to make the thing as movie-accurate as possible. This mode is activated when the lightweight vehicle is in flight and before hitting the ground, the wheels retract back into position.

Of course, the flying capability is achieved using four rotors on each corner that lift the frame up. In its first flight with wheels, the Styrofoam Delorean’s airframe and PID tune need some tinkering before it can fly in any direction as intended. On top of the solid chassis sits the upper section of the vehicle, which is made to scale and looks like a washed-out DMC-12 in another dimension. In subsequent test flights, he discovered the need for thrust vector control flaps to reduce overall weight and improve yaw response. The current final version of the DIY addresses all the basic issues and is ready for flight actuated by an InterLink DX Simulator controller, set to show off on the road.

Random Studio takes over the design of a permanent retail space within Zara’s largest store, a five-floor building in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Occupying a significant portion of the first floor, the project establishes a hybrid environment defined by spatial layering and material contrast.

 

A backlit metallic grid introduces a threshold between the newly created ‘quarry-like’ space and the rest of the store. Within this boundary, geometric blocks and muted natural tones define product display zones, unified by overhead light panels that provide consistent illumination.

Contrasting Material Palettes Divide spaces in Zara Rotterdam

 

The design team at Random Studio distinguishes the space between two main collections through material palettes. The urban collection is presented with articulated fixtures incorporating glass, natural stone, and stainless steel. In contrast, the sports collection is framed by black steel, rubber, and industrial-style elements. A dedicated social area provides visitors with seating in two elevated zones. This space, bright and restrained in expression, functions as a pause point within the larger retail environment.

The V&A’s Super Cool, Massive East Storehouse Makes Archival Storage Publicly Accessible

Most museums have massive storage areas, where they store all of the stuff that’s not in the exhibition halls. These storage areas are always closed off to the public. But London’s Victoria & Albert Museum has done something really cool, and turned the storage area itself into an accessible destination in its own right. It’s called the V&A East Storehouse.

The space almost reminds me of the Collector’s Museum in “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

It opened earlier this year, and was designed by NYC studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro and British architecture firm Austin-Smith:Lord. Inside you’ll find, in addition to books and proper archives, some 250,000 artifacts and objects sitting within curated displays.

You can even, by request, handle some of the objects. You can also access a loft overlooking the Conservation Studios, where you can observe curators at work, preparing objects for display.

There are even recreations of famous spaces that you can peer into. As two examples, here’s Frank Lloyd Wright’s Kaufmann Office, and the fabulous Frankfurt Kitchen, the then-radical ergonomic galley concept designed by Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky in 1926.

The entire space is four levels, and it looks like you could spend all day there. Note that the floor is a steel grate, so you’ll want to consider your choice of footwear.

There is a cafeteria, and also a locker room at the entrance, where you’re required to leave your bags and coats. (They don’t want any artifacts falling into your pockets.)

“More jungle less zoo” – why we need to hear more client voices

The eclectic range of presentations at Frontify’s brand experience conference covered everything from Marcus Aurelius’ wisdom to surrealist Italian brainrot memes.

Nike was the conference’s recurring cautionary tale. Several speakers showed its precipitous share price decline since 2021 – the parable of the brand who forgot who it was.

(For the record, Builders Club co-founder Jonas Hegi shared a succession of innovative Nike projects in his talk, suggesting reports of the brand’s creative demise were perhaps overblown).

It was hard to see one major theme across the two days. But having let the dust settle, perhaps the lesson lies in how we talk about design, rather than what was said.

Tom Beckman, Weber Shandwick’s global chief creative officer, shared perhaps my favourite stat of the conference – that 66% of people believe brands try too hard.

You can see why. When Taylor Swift launched her new album with an orange-forward visual campaign, brands rushed to embrace the colour across their social feeds. This led to a rash of posts that looked incredibly similar, and an outpouring of ennui from everyone else.

“It’s very important for both sides to deliver their expertise to the table.”

Beckman was the PR jury president for this year’s Cannes Lions, and he shared an interesting insight into that judging process. Every idea they analysed, he said, had to work in the jungle, not just the zoo.

Zoos are safe. Controlled. Predictable. Animals are fed at regular intervals and kept away from predators. But jungles are a free-for-all.

His point was that we need to set our creative ideas free and see how they get on in the real world. Only the best ideas thrive in this messy, risky, sometimes frustratingly disengaged environment.

So we need to break out of our echo chambers, to be honest about the role design plays in the wider world, and to measure brands’ success using real impact metrics, rather than being seduced by slick case studies.

To live up to that, I think the whole industry needs to shift the way we discuss design. While there will always be a place for craft, by focusing too intently on the creative details, we risk judging it by the “zoo” standard.

Rather, we need to better understand, and share, how design work gets made, gets implemented, and gets measured in the real world.

A good start would be to bring more client voices into our media, onto our stages and podcasts and magazines.

It was refreshing that several talks at Paradigms brought the design agency and the client on stage together to talk about their work. This seemingly simple thing actually felt really significant.

Too often, we only get half the story.

Every aspect of design work can be better understood when it’s presented by the client and the studio together – from the context, to the strategy, to the delivery, to the reception.

Apparently this set-up is more common at marketing conferences, but I still think it’s the exception rather than the rule in the design world. And it shouldn’t be.

Mutabor’s work for Kleinanzeigen

Iskra Velichkova, senior director of marketing at Paypal, joined Mutabor’s chief design officer Burkhard Müller on stage to discuss their work on both Paypal and German classifieds site, Kleinanzeigen.

Speaking afterwards, Velichkova pointed out that any big rebrand project has to be a genuine collaboration.

“These projects are massively complex, and so it’s super-important that both sides work as one,” she said.

To ensure the right kind of partnership, you need to select an agency that will work in this way, rather than “two entities working in parallel.”

Some of that comes down to discussing how the process will work, but Velichkova and her team also keenly observe the dynamics within the agency team.

“Observing how the people in the room interact with each other and how they interact with you is very important,” she says.

For the Kleinanzeigen project, which involved 164 million pages of content, and tens of thousands of digital assets, they needed a design team with a flat structure, where decision-making is decentralised.

“So when we were doing the pitch, we were actually observing how the people in the room were behaving – who gets what airtime, and who gets what say,” she says. Did one person dominate and interrupt others? And might that cause problems down the line?

“In the Mutabor case, you couldn’t tell who was the trainee and who was the general manager. Everyone had something smart to say.”

Given this incredibly collaborative nature, it wouldn’t make sense for the work to be presented only by the designers – or only by the client for that matter.

“It’s very important for both sides to deliver their expertise to the table,” she says. “I wouldn’t be a good person to talk about the specifics of the design and how they were developed.

“But to tell the complete story, we need to talk about the context, the business case, the go-to market and the results.”

And telling stories in this way benefits everyone, Velichkova believes.

Design Bridge and Partners’ Tom Gilbert agrees. He was joined on stage by their client, HSBC’s group brand design lead, Jamie Lillywhite.

“Most design presentations are still very agency centric,” Gilbert says. “We talk about the work in isolation. Yet the truth, the best brands are built in partnership.

In their talk, Gilbert and Lilywhite shared some detailed nuts and bolts around how the HSBC brand lives in real life. This, Gilbert says, helps bring to life how brand building is an “iterative” process where things are constantly being refined.

But this way of presenting work also shifts the focus.

“Many presentations lean into the why and the what. But when clients and agencies share a stage, the conversation often becomes about the how. That is what really seems to resonate with audiences. It is the part people are most curious about, the part they can learn from and apply themselves.”

Velichkova says something very similar – that these talks can provide rich insights which those on both sides of the table can learn from.

“For me, co-presenting is about showing the partnership, the process, and the progress,” Gilbert explains. “It reflects how brands are really built, and as a brand design industry, we should be doing much more of it.”

Brian Brocken is Building a Full-Size Flying DeLorean

Hailing from Belgium, Brian Brocken is an instrumentation technician specializing in both electromechanics and automation. As a hobby, he picked up a junked robot arm built in 1999—so old that the 2-ton arm actually ran on floppy drives. Once used as a welding robot at the Eurostar train factory in Austria, by the time Brocken acquired it, the mothballed machine had dead internal batteries and a defective controller.

Using his skillset, he revived it, turning the relic into a workable CNC milling machine. The next question was, what should he use it for?

Simple: Build a full-size replica of the DeLorean from “Back to the Future.” One that flies. “I saw the ‘Back To The Future’ movie again one night and thought that would be a great project,” Brocken explains. “The model would be made out of EPS foam so it would even be light enough to maybe fly. So I started designing the model and did some calculations and it turns out to be actually feasible.”

Brocken started the project in 2023, and here’s where he’s at now:

Incredibly, getting the thing to fly wasn’t the hard part; by using predominantly EPS, Brocken got the weight of the body down to 14kg (about 31 lbs). Four 3000W motors each driving a 30-inch propellor are enough to get it off the ground.

The harder part was much more prosaic: The door hinges, which are driven by a linear actuator. “The automatic door hinge design for the gulwing doors was probably the most complicated design part of the whole build (so far),” Brocken explains. “This is the part I spend the most time on. I didn’t want the hinges to show on the roof of the car, I wanted an off-center hinge that’s completely concealed inside the roof and door itself, similar to real car doors.”

Brocken also had to figure out how to allow airflow through the vehicle, so that the propellors could do their thing. He thus designed a system of louvers. “I didn’t want 2 gaping holes in the front and the back so I made a flap-system connected to a linear actuator through mechanical linkages. This way the blades are concealed when the flaps are closed and allow air to enter inside when they are open.”

This Fire-Resistant ADU Could Reshape California Housing

In a La Jolla backyard, a geometric structure rises like an origami masterpiece, its sharp angles catching the California sun. This isn’t just another trendy ADU. The Polyhaus Tetra-One represents something far more significant: a potential solution to two of California’s most pressing crises.

Daniel Lopez-Perez and Celine Vargas founded Polyhaus in 2021 after watching their home state burn year after year. As architects, they understood that traditional stick-built homes were becoming increasingly vulnerable to California’s intensifying wildfire seasons. Their frustration with slow, inefficient construction methods led them to ask a simple question: What if homes could be both beautiful and bulletproof against fire?

The answer came in the form of Cross-Laminated Timber panels sourced from Washington’s Colville National Forest restoration projects. These CLT panels undergo robotic fabrication, creating structures with zero air gaps that are three to five times more fire-resistant than conventional wood construction. Wrapped in insulated metal panels, the Tetra-One creates multiple layers of protection while maintaining exceptional energy performance.

The proof of concept sits in their own backyard. The 540-square-foot unit features 440 square feet on the ground floor with a 100-square-foot mezzanine loft above. Despite its compact footprint, the space feels remarkably open, housing a full kitchen, bathroom, living area, bonus space, and cozy sleeping loft. The sharply pitched roof, reminiscent of an A-frame, maximizes interior volume while minimizing land use.

What sets the Tetra-One apart isn’t just its fire resistance. The entire structure can be assembled in three days, a timeline that seems impossible in California’s notoriously slow construction environment. This speed comes from advanced prefabrication techniques typically reserved for large-scale commercial projects, now scaled down for residential use.

The sustainability story runs deeper than fire resistance. By using timber from forest restoration projects, each Tetra-One creates a direct link between healthy forests and sustainable housing. This approach addresses wildfire prevention at its source while providing building materials that actually improve with controlled harvesting.

At $300,000, the Tetra-One positions itself as an accessible entry point into homeownership in California’s brutal market. For comparison, the median ADU construction cost in San Diego often exceeds this figure, yet most lack Tetra-One’s fire resistance and rapid construction timeline.

The timing couldn’t be more critical. California faces a perfect storm of housing shortage, wildfire risk, and climate change impacts. Traditional solutions feel inadequate when neighborhoods can disappear overnight in fire seasons. The Tetra-One offers a different path forward. Polyhaus now offers designs ranging from the original ADU up to 2,500 square feet, suggesting the Tetra-One was just the beginning. As climate challenges intensify and housing costs soar, this geometric structure in La Jolla might represent more than innovative design. It could be a glimpse into how we’ll build homes that protect both people and planet.

Industrial Design and Mechanical Engineering Students Collaborate on Surgical Device

Within industrial design firms and in-house design teams, ID’ers often collaborate with mechanical engineers. Why not introduce them to each other earlier? A recent project at Auburn University did just that, to great success. The school partnered with KYRA, a medical equipment manufacturer, to task an ID and ME student team with designing a surgical device.

During arthoscopic surgeries, the surgical sites are kept clean by a flow of saline solution delivered from hanging ID bags. When the bags begin to reach empty, an alarm sounds, and a nurse must quickly swap the bag for a fresh one. Both the alarm and the bag-changing add an element of chaos to the proceedings and can distract the surgeon.

To address this, the students designed a device that automatically switches to a fresh bag as each one empties. “It provides a non-disruptive means of managing and monitoring the fluid for surgical procedures,” ID professor Shea Tillman explains.

If you’re wondering how students were entrusted with designing a surgical device: KYRA’s president, CEO and co-founder Howard Miller is an Auburn alumnus. By chance he ran into Steve Taylor, Auburn’s Senior Vice President for Research and Development, and the two began to talk. With 30 years’ experience in the field, Miller understands the importance of both ME and ID in medical device design, and suggested having students from both departments collaborate on the project.

“it was incredibly rewarding to see the next generation of engineers bringing a real-world medical device all the way from concept to professional unveiling, and it was great to have industrial design included as well,” Miller said.

Joseph Freeman, an ME student who worked on the project, agreed. “Working alongside industrial designers from day one was a great learning experience, and I truly believe our success wouldn’t have been possible without that integrated approach,” he said. “They showed me that usability and ergonomics are just as critical as functionality for a device like this.”

The students got to unveil their device at this year’s Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses’ (AORN) conference in Boston.

Here’s to hoping more schools with both ME and ID combine their departments on real-world projects like this. Practitioners of the two disciplines can only benefit by learning, early on, how to collaborate.
