Dedicated to exploring the private life, family relationships, and early inspirations of Frida Kahlo, the venue occupies the same neighborhood where the artist and her family lived for over a century. Far from the public eye of Frida’s more famous blue house, Casa Azul, this intimate residence offers a glimpse into the domestic world that shaped her life and work.

The museum experience, designed by the New York-, Los Angeles- and Madrid-based teams of Rockwell Group, is deliberately personal and reflective. Visitors move through preserved domestic spaces that include a kitchen containing Frida’s only known mural, a candlelit basement that once served as her private retreat, and rooms dedicated to family initiatives like La Ayuda, a charity for single mothers. Museo Casa Kahlo foregrounds Frida’s roles as sister, aunt, and friend, illuminating the networks of support and inspiration that fueled her artistic life.

OpenAI and Ive’s venture, io, have been working in close quarters on a new family of products that are speculated to be screen-free, pocket-sized devices. In between all this speculation was the Limited Edition Sondek LP12 turntable remake with a refined design and well-tuned audio. His design firm LoveFrom gets the AI hardware influence from OpenAI, as they’ve announced a sailing lantern, created in partnership with Japanese manufacturing company Balmuda, that specializes in creating everyday tools.

The upmarket lantern was born from Ive’s frustration with the existing options available for his yacht. The product started off as normal sketches that the former Apple CEO walked with in Gen Terao, CEO Balmuda’s office. The idea quickly resonated with Terao, and the two went into a snowball of discussing the prototypes. The basic sense was to make something inspired by the old Fresnel lamps used by sailors for navigation. Ive, who himself fancies sailing, decided to incorporate elements of the GP14 boats from his childhood, hence came into fruition the LoveFrom x Balmuda Sailing Lantern that costs $4,800.

Ive said, “It has been a considerable honour and enormously enjoyable creating our lantern with Gen and his wonderful team at BALMUDA. As a young boy, I adored sailing and spending my time on the water. Our lantern was created and built for maritime conditions. While the materials, form, and product architecture are new, there is a reassuring familiarity to the nautical lanterns and Fresnel lamps of the past whose designs evolved to address the same unforgiving functional requirements.”

Gen complements this sentiment by adding that, “This collaboration is built on mutual respect and a shared obsession with the small, unseen details that shape our experience of an object. The Sailing Lantern is a light for life – durable, soulful, and quietly transformative.” He very passionately explains how Jony introduced him to the idea of an ancient flame having a modern form. Creating a lantern that carries the essence of enduring adventures and romantic nights is rare.

The initial challenge in the creation of the design was developing a luminary quality that has warmth and emotional resonance, seen in conventional lanterns. Emulating the light from the frame and filament are the key factors, and that’s what was made possible with the two LEDs, rechargeable battery, and digital control system. The opulent lantern manages to achieve the emotional element with a single dial control for both brightness and color temperature. The focus on the design of the lantern was on leaving a minimal carbon footprint; thus, designing it to be easy to maintain, repair, and ultimately recyclable.

This resulted in choosing materials for both integrity and longevity. The precision-ground, polished glass, precision-machined stainless steel having a mirror polish, and texture-blasted electroplated finish all contribute to the exclusivity of the Sailing Lantern. One can either use it in freestanding or suspended mode with a lanyard. No wonder the Sailing lantern is only going to be made in a limited run of 1,000 units.

LEGO Ideas brings The Evolution of STEM to celebrate innovation

I am not, and probably never will be, a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) person, as I lean more toward the arts and humanities. However, I will always appreciate the breakthroughs and innovations made in this field, as they have profoundly affected our lives, whether or not we fully understand them. Over the years, there has also been a push to get kids, especially girls, interested in STEM-related courses and projects.

If you’re an adult who loves STEM, or a parent wanting to spark a child’s interest in any of these fields, the new LEGO® Ideas collectible display is for you. Called The Evolution of STEM, it showcases some of the most historic innovations in science through mini-builds displayed on an open book buildable base. As you create these builds and display them later, you’ll be reminded of important milestones in scientific and human history.

This collectible for adults features several mini-builds that celebrate innovation. You get to build an early car, the earliest version of a home computer, and the NASA Voyager Probe with the Golden Record, among others. There are also interactive elements, like a 3D replica of a carbon atom that floats upwards and a DNA strand that rotates just by turning a dial. Plus, there’s a Morse code message hidden within the builds. Some of the mini-builds you can create include Newton’s apple tree, Carver’s plant bed, a space shuttle, and a robotic arm.

You also get three LEGO® minifigures of some of the most famous scientists: Marie Curie (mother of modern physics), Sir Isaac Newton (leader of the Scientific Revolution), and George Washington Carver (agricultural science pioneer). It would have been nice to see even more scientific heroes as minifigs to honor the STEM trailblazers of our day. Still, there’s plenty to enjoy in finishing this collectible display build, especially if you’re a science and history geek.

As with many wonderful builds like this, it started as a winning entry in a LEGO® contest, where people were asked to submit ideas for celebrating the wonder of STEM. ZeusBricks created “Knowledge is Power,” and from there, the LEGO® team added more details and refined the elements. It’s always inspiring to see how collaboration between fans and designers can bring such creative concepts to life. With each new set, LEGO® continues to prove that learning and play can go hand in hand, sparking curiosity and imagination in builders of all ages. Here’s hoping for more fun and educational builds like this in the future!

The Purple version I received for review is especially subtle, with the purple hue becoming more noticeable in good lighting but otherwise presenting a calm and modern appearance. This reserved approach to color makes the tablet easy to fit into different personal styles or workspace setups, never coming across as loud or distracting.

The tablet features a metal unibody design with a matte finish. This adds a sense of durability and refinement, while also cutting down on reflections and helping to hide fingerprints or small smudges. The Pad Mini maintains a tidy look with regular use, even if you choose not to use a case.

On the back panel, the camera module is positioned in the upper right corner when the device is held vertically. It sits within an oval-shaped, transparent glass-like cutout that subtly contrasts against the matte metal. Inside this cutout is the single camera lens, what appears to be a microphone, and the words “Gamma Antenna” printed clearly.

Industrial Design Case Study (From a Mechanical Engineer): This Beautiful, Tiny Bike Pump

This Featherforged: Nano is a tiny, elegant bike pump. It was created by an anonymous mechanical engineer, who posted the project online. ME credentials aside, this makes for a great ID case study.

I wanted to show off a personal project I spent many months on (designing, testing, building).

After some extremely long rides into remote areas, such as my 14 hour ride from Denver to the top of Mt Evans/Blue Sky and back, I wanted to create a bike pump that was infinitely reliable (all metal/overbuilt design/no plastic/batteries) and also would fit in a tiny seat post bag. It would also be small enough to pair with CO2 cartridges as a last resort if the CO2 ran out.

I settled on a design that would fit directly onto a presta valve stem- no rubber tubes or attachments to add weight or potentially fail or add complexity.

I created the computer aided design (CAD) in Fusion 360 and added drawings and tolerances for important components (I’m a mechanical engineer with 15 years of designing >100 products for tool/defense/medical companies. This is my first solo build of a product for myself).

I ran finite element analysis in Fusion 360 to ensure that everything was overbuilt (A casing that was laughably designed to hold many thousands of PSI, for example, when it would only see about 100 psi). This would ensure it would survive drops, impacts, crashes, etc (I did take a 35mph, worst crash of my life, with this pump, and it obviously did not suffer ill effects, like I did).

My initial 3D print and then metal prototype build had a tiny handle that was extremely uncomfortable, and gave me blisters, so I added a large, thick, and comfortable aluminum handle that gave it a “flash bang” aesthetic. Then, I added neodymium magnets for quick latching and a sort of fidget mechanic.

I purchased a simple reciprocating jig and tested the O-rings, lubricants, and seals to a million cycles at 130F and running high pressures.

For my final build, I sent out the drawings and CAD to a CNC shop for the parts to be manufactured. I received enough parts for about 300 pumps (it’s much more cost effective per unit to order a lot of parts than even just a few). When these parts arrived, I assembled them by hand and give them a mirror polish.

Overall, I’m very happy with the results and carry it everywhere for my bikes and even my car (God forbid).

It takes about 2 minutes to add a few psi and about 10 minutes for a completely flat tire. My rationale for this is: Flat tires are rare with tubeless, at most, one per year. It can be combined with CO2 or electric as a final last resort pump, if you get frequent flats (CO2 and electric being less reliable/limited). I would rather carry a very small/light pump for two thousand plus miles a year and spend ten minutes on the side of the road once per year, than carrying a large pump all year for this rare occasion (but this is just my experience and opinion).

I’ve posted this project on Etsy and I sell about 1 per month, so I plan to break even on my expenditure in like 2030 (haha) (It’s been a passion project). I named it the Featherforged: nanotap (seemed like a fitting name for an ultralight/full-metal project). I would like to design more all-metal/ultralight tools in the future.

As for the “I sell about 1 per month,” claim, the units sold out within five days of the project being posted!

Impressive Portable Outdoor Theater with 16.7′ Inflatable Screen

Once known primarily for design piracy, Chinese companies are finally moving towards true innovation and original experimentation. Companies that made smartphones ten years ago are now making electric cars. Anker, which once made phone chargers and power banks, now has an A/V spin-off called Nebula; their latest is this crazy Soundcore Nebula X1 Pro, a portable outdoor theater system.

In its travel configuration, it looks like a rolling piece of luggage or maybe a karaoke machine.

Once on-site, these little rectangular thingies…

…can be deployed from the unit. They’re actually a quartet of wireless speakers that provide 360° sound.

The 16.7′ inflatable screen comes with a battery-powered air pump. The company says it takes about five minutes to inflate or deflate the screen. You do have to anchor the thing down, of course; it comes with ropes, stakes, and ballast bags that you can fill with water.

The projector can be placed at up to a 25° angle from the screen; built-in sensors detect the actual boundaries of the screen and automatically compensate, the company says, to provide a focused and proportional image.

And it actually can be used as a karaoke machine; two wireless microphones are included, while a built-in subwoofer provides the bass.

Obviously the image quality in the renderings is depicted as perfect. Here’s video of an actual unit in operation, which looks pretty impressive:

Demand is high, to say the least; the company’s racked up $4.4 million on Kickstarter and counting, with 43 days left to pledge at press time. With the 16.7′ screen, the units are going for $3,700 and are slated to ship in December.
