Amazon Just Built A 171,000-Square-Foot Warehouse Using Only Wood

Amazon’s new delivery station in Elkhart, Indiana, looks nothing like the concrete and steel boxes that dot America’s logistics landscape. The 171,000-square-foot facility is built almost entirely from mass timber, using over 500,000 board feet of southern yellow pine to create walls and ceilings that breathe warmth into an industrial space. ZGF Architects designed the building as a living laboratory where Amazon plans to test more than 40 sustainability strategies that could reshape how the company builds its next 1,200 delivery stations worldwide.

Half a Million Board Feet Replace Steel and Concrete

The building sits on 39 acres near Elkhart Municipal Airport, employing over 200 workers who sort packages under exposed timber beams instead of fluorescent-lit concrete caves. Mass timber construction cuts carbon emissions dramatically compared to traditional methods since wood stores carbon rather than producing it during manufacturing.

The southern yellow pine came from sustainably managed forests, turning trees into structural elements that replace energy-intensive steel and concrete. Amazon isn’t just making an environmental statement. They’re gathering data on whether mass timber can handle the daily punishment of industrial operations while cutting construction costs and timelines.

Natural Light and Reclaimed Water Replace Industrial Standards

Walk inside and the differences multiply. Clerestory windows flood the space with natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting that typically accounts for massive energy bills in warehouse operations. The building features circadian lighting systems that adjust throughout the day to match natural light patterns, keeping workers alert without the harsh glare of standard industrial fixtures.

An underground rainwater reclamation system collects runoff for toilet flushing, while 170 EV charging stations prepare for an electric delivery fleet. Air-source heat pumps replace gas furnaces, and the concrete used in foundations contains significantly lower carbon content than standard mixes.

Zero Carbon Certification Could Change 1,200 Global Stations

The facility targets Zero Carbon Certification from the Living Future Institute, one of the toughest environmental standards in construction. This means the building must produce as much renewable energy as it consumes over a year. Amazon VP Daniel Mallory calls it a testing ground for technologies that will scale across the company’s global footprint.

If mass timber proves durable and cost-effective in Indiana’s humid summers and freezing winters, hundreds of similar buildings could follow. The construction industry produces nearly 40 percent of global carbon emissions, making even modest improvements at Amazon’s scale meaningful for climate impact.

The Real Test Starts Now

This isn’t Amazon’s first experiment with sustainable architecture, but it’s the first time they’ve committed mass timber to daily industrial abuse. Graycor Construction completed the project after a two-decade partnership with Amazon spanning over 30 projects in 15 states. The real test begins now as forklifts roll, packages pile, and timber faces years of wear that will determine whether wood can truly replace steel in America’s warehouse revolution.

HONOR’s Robot Phone Has a 3-Axis Gimbal Camera That Replaces Your DJI Osmo

Forget foldables… we now have followables. HONOR just dropped a teaser for their Robot Phone, with a pop-out gimbal camera that can follow you around, tracking people like a DJI Osmo Pocket does… except the entire camera itself sits inside the camera bump of this audacious new concept phone. I have a LOT of thoughts (I won’t question the feasibility, but I will break down what I love/hate about it), starting with “Who the hell even came up with this idea?!”

I imagined a very different trajectory for smartphones. Most smartphone companies are exploring the foldable route, some trying to figure out what the next version of the phone will be (VR headsets, smart glasses, etc.), and some are even thinking about how an all-powerful AI device could usher the death of the smartphone. In all of this, HONOR decided to throw a curveball as to the future of smartphones – a phone that can look around without you needing to point it anywhere.

Let’s get the good stuff out of the way before we get to the ‘bad’ stuff. This right here is a remarkable feat of engineering. Earlier this year we saw Roborock put a robotic arm inside a robot vacuum and my mind was blown. Then in September, Apple announced the iPhone Air which practically fit an entire smartphone’s computing power into its camera bump. HONOR looked at both of these things and said, UNHH Pen Pineapple Apple Pen… or more specifically, Robot Arm Camera Smartphone Camera Bump.

Before I speculate further, we literally have no details of what this phone’s specs, availability, or price points are. Everything is purely hypothetical at this point, but HONOR did point out that the Robot Phone will make its debut appearance at MWC 2026 in Barcelona this coming year. We’ll be on the floor and obviously I can’t wait to see this phone actually pull off what it promises, rather than just seeing a CG version of it in HONOR’s teaser video.

The phone looks exactly like the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max from the back – same rectangular bump with cameras, same matte panel on the back, breaking up the volume (although the iPhone 17 Pro Max did it first.) Except, while the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max fitted an entire screen around the camera lenses, HONOR decided to cram a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 into the phone instead. Activate the camera and a glass panel slides away, revealing the 3-axis gimbal camera that operates entirely on its own, electronically positioning itself and looking around before honing in on a subject.

The comparison to DJI’s gimbal camera is instant, but let’s also look back to the wild Nokia N-Series days. The N93 might have been the most incredible phone of its era, outshining everything that came before it. Imagine a phone with a camera that could be positioned like a handycam. The screen rotated, swiveled, angled any which way, while you film what’s around you. DJI not only managed to automate it, but also fit the whole damn thing into the smartphone’s camera bump.

Why must such a device exist? Well, there are two incredibly broad reasons apart from the obvious eyeball-grab of HONOR wanting to one-up other phone companies – the first, is that nobody loves their front-facing camera… so having a rear-facing camera that can somehow film you is always a preferred option. It’s why flip-style foldables have been such a hit, or even Xiaomi’s 17 Pro Max with the screen on the camera bump. What HONOR is doing is flipping the script, or rather, the camera. Instead of you rotating the phone to use the rear camera, it rotates to face you. That’s point 1. The second point lies in the fact that this is, in fact, a 3-axis cam – which means it doesn’t just look at you, it looks EVERYWHERE.

That’s the distinction here. HONOR’s video shows the camera being able to track faces and events (just like any gimbal camera or drone camera does), as well as sort of emote or interact with people, tilting sideways or nodding/shaking to somehow create an anthropomorphic effect. But more importantly, this gimbal basically means nobody has to ‘point’ their phone at anything again. You could shoot precisely without pointing precisely. You could capture panoramic shots without moving. And the most interesting part, your phone can look around even if it’s kept face-down on a table.

That feature turns into dystopia just when you start thinking of what this means for phones. Phones started off as communication devices in your pocket, then they became surveillance devices in your hand. Now they don’t even need to be in your hands. Just leave the phone on a table and not only will it record your voice, it can record everything around it too. It’s great but it’s also sort of a step too far… especially when you consider how powerful AI has already become.

Meta’s smart glasses have put cameras on potentially a million faces, allowing them to record POV videos. This one is a little more covert, if you ask me. Your phone could record someone even if you aren’t pointing your phone AT them. It could be harmlessly sitting in your pocket, while the pop-out gimbal camera records things around you. Great when it’s an assistant, but somewhat scary when it has agency. That being said, I’m sure HONOR’s thought long and hard about such potential scenarios – the company debuted a deepfake detector at IFA last year (to help users detect AI imposter scam calls), I’m sure there’s a team at HONOR that’s also figuring out protocols around apps weaponizing the all-seeing spy camera without your permission.

The cultural practicality is sort of overshadowed by the hardware practicality. We had moving parts on phones not too long ago… Oppo had a bunch of pop-up camera phones, as did OnePlus with the 7T Pro, but companies slowly phased that tech out because of how much space the hardware took, how it was the single most fragile part of the phone’s otherwise robust construction, and how moving parts instantly made any phone less water/dust resistant. How HONOR plans on executing this Robot Phone is beyond me, but I’d love to see them try. The camera requires some free space to actually pop out (and it needs to be absolutely away from obstacles as it closes. Dust, dirt, food, scraps of paper, anything could get trapped inside the phone’s camera-crevasse (that’s what I’m calling it), and more importantly, we’re not entirely sure what happens if the glass panel that protects the camera gets stuck while moving in or out. The camera’s 3-axis motor system is another headache entirely.

But then again, I trust HONOR to do the job more than any other company. They debuted the world’s thinnest foldable, and showed off some incredible chops with the pop-out camera on their MagicBook Art 14. The company pushes the limit of innovation far more than its European and American counterparts, and it isn’t afraid of trying something new, while we still wait for Apple to figure out foldables and build a proper AI assistant, for Google to figure out what the next step for phones is, and Samsung to build the tri-fold and quad-fold devices they’ve been teasing for months now.

Meet Janus-I, the foldable flying suitcase that can take off as a one-seater VTOL aircraft and land on water as a lifeboat. Designed to be small enough to fold and fit in the trunk of a car, the portable vehicle is easy to deploy and unfold. It operates with a turboshaft heavy fuel engine and has enough power output that lets the aircraft carry a payload of up to 200 kilos. The load capacity also allows it to carry both passengers and cargo, including luggage, equipment, or supplies. Since the foldable flying suitcase and VTOL is an ultralight aircraft, it can be operated without a pilot’s license or formal certification and pre-approved flight routes.

 

The Janus-I uses a fly-by-wire system, which means it doesn’t have the usual mechanical parts that connect the controls to the engine and wings. Instead, everything works electronically. The system does most of the tricky flying work for the flyer, including keeping the aircraft steady and balanced. Because of that, even someone who’s never flown before can learn how to use the foldable flying suitcase and VTO, and Eric Young, the Youtube content creator who tested the aircraft, says that riders can only take about 30 minutes to get the hang of flying the vehicle.

When folded up, janus-I’s parts tuck inward

 

The Janus-I aircraft uses multiple rotors to generate lift, allowing it to ascend and descend vertically, similar to a drone, without needing a runway. When it’s folded up, the foldable flying VTOL’s arms and other parts tuck inward, kind of like how a suitcase closes. This lets it shrink down small enough to fit in a regular car, so flyers can take it anywhere and set it up even in tight spaces. Instead of using normal gas or electric batteries, it runs on heavy fuel, as if it were an airplane, so it can fly for longer and use fuel more efficiently than most electric flying vehicles. The Janus-I can fly higher than 6,000 meters and can take off or land on both land and water. 

 

Its body is made from materials that don’t get damaged easily by rain, snow, or temperature changes, so it can still work fine in light rain or cold weather. The team behind it has already tested it in tough places like the Himalayas and the Arctic, and those tests showed that the aircraft can handle high altitudes, cold air, and rough conditions while keeping its engine strong and its controls stable. When folded, the foldable flying suitcase and VTOL measures 1099 millimeters in length, 640 millimeters in width, and 665 millimeters in height, with a total weight of 70 kilos. The Janus-I can be used in different sectors, like outdoor exploration, search and rescue, and short-range transport. In exploration, it can carry tools and supplies to remote areas without needing landing infrastructure, and in emergency rescue operations, it can quickly reach disaster zones, carrying rescue equipment or small medical loads.

BIG’s First LA Building Stacks Like Architectural Jenga At 45 Degrees

The Robert Day Sciences Center stands at Claremont McKenna College like a game of architectural Jenga frozen mid-play. Bjarke Ingels Group designed the 135,000-square-foot building with volumes stacked atop one another, each pair rotated 45 degrees from the floor below. The result creates dramatic cantilevers and outdoor terraces that break away from the traditional campus aesthetic. Commissioned in 2020 and completed this fall, the building marks BIG’s first completed project in Los Angeles and serves as the anchor for the firm’s larger master plan for the college’s Roberts Campus.

The design responds directly to its Southern California setting. Those rotating volumes aren’t just sculptural—they create shaded outdoor spaces essential for the region’s climate. Each rotation generates terraces and balconies that encourage students to step outside between lab sessions. The concrete construction provides thermal mass that helps regulate interior temperatures naturally. BIG positioned the building to maximize natural light while minimizing heat gain, a balance that matters when you’re housing sensitive research equipment.

A Building Designed Around Research

The center brings together multiple scientific disciplines under one roof. Students studying genealogical research, climate science, and neuroscience share labs and collaboration spaces across the building’s multiple floors. This interdisciplinary approach shaped the entire layout. Open research areas sit alongside flexible teaching spaces, allowing faculty to adapt rooms as research needs evolve. The building accommodates 1,400 students, creating a critical mass of scientific inquiry that the college previously lacked in a single dedicated facility.

The ground floor opens directly to the campus, inviting non-science students to engage with what’s happening inside. Large windows reveal active lab spaces, demystifying the research process. Upper floors become progressively more specialized, with advanced equipment and quieter study areas as you move higher. This vertical organization creates a natural hierarchy while maintaining visual connections between levels through strategically placed atriums and double-height spaces.

Art Meets Science

A 30-foot sculpture suspended in the building’s central atrium captures the intersection of art and scientific inquiry. The installation visualizes Earth’s magnetosphere through 18 metal rings and 1,476 hand-blown glass spheres. It’s not decorative—the piece translates complex scientific data into physical form, helping students grasp abstract concepts through spatial experience. The sculpture changes appearance as you move through the building, offering different perspectives from each floor.

The Robert Day Sciences Center represents the first phase of BIG’s broader vision for transforming the campus. Future buildings will continue the language of stacked volumes while creating courtyards and gathering spaces between structures. The master plan aims to knit together existing campus buildings with new construction, building a cohesive scientific district. For now, this single building establishes a new architectural vocabulary that’s both bold and deeply rooted in its place.

Hands-on with ASUS ROG Ally X, ProArt P16, XG Mobile, and ExpertBook P-series where refinement beats raw specs

ASUS brought their full product showcase to New York, spanning handhelds, creator laptops, and business machines. The star was the ROG Ally X with AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip and Xbox Full Screen Experience. But the lineup also included the ProArt P16 with its new Lumina Pro OLED display tuned for HDR work, the updated XG Mobile external GPU dock that weighs under 1 kilo with a built-in 330W PSU, and the ExpertBook P-series bringing enterprise durability and modularity to solo creators and small teams. After hands-on time with the lineup, a pattern emerged across every product category. ASUS is prioritizing refinement over reinvention. Ergonomics and thermal management matter more than spec sheets suggest. Calibrated displays and quiet sustained performance matter more than peak wattage numbers. And when the software shell is actually designed for the hardware form factor, Windows can feel console-native.

ROG Ally X: Comfort is everything

The ROG Ally X’s sculpted grips pull the center of mass into my wrists instead of forcing me to pinch a flat slab. The whole device is perfectly balanced, so when you hold it, it feels lighter than it actually is because you’re not propping it up on your palm. It just fits. The Hall Effect sticks track with that light spring then linear feel I look for when feathering aim, and the Impulse Triggers give a distinct brake and throttle signature with their localized haptics. None of this reads as gimmickry. It reads like muscle memory transferred from an Xbox controller to a 7-inch, 1080p 120Hz screen with FreeSync smoothing out the motion.

At 715 grams (1.58 pounds), the Ally X weighs more than the original Ally and most handhelds in this class. But the balanced weight distribution and textured ovoid grips slot perfectly into the palm crook. The ADXY buttons, the Xbox button placement on the front, the ergonomic shaping. All of it adds up to authority. I can hold this without wrist strain or hand cramping. This is the most comfortable handheld PC I’ve tested.

In the demo space, the fans stayed at a soft, low register and the grips never heated past warm. I’m baffled by how quiet this thing is. Even during gameplay that would bring fan hiss on other handhelds, the Ally X stays nearly silent. That’s the 80Wh battery and revised cooling doing their work.

AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and performance feel

The Ally X is the first handheld shipping with AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip. Zen 5 architecture, 8 cores, 16 threads, AMD Radeon RDNA 3.5 graphics with 16 compute units, and 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 memory. During gameplay, the titles I tested felt smooth and responsive at high settings. The 120Hz display with FreeSync made motion feel fluid. What stood out was the seamless experience. No stuttering, no texture pop-in, no compromises.

Xbox Full Screen Experience

The Xbox Full Screen Experience makes the Ally X feel more like a console than any Windows handheld before it. The aggregated game library pulls from Xbox, Game Pass, and other PC storefronts into one unified interface. Everything is controller-navigable. This is the first Windows handheld interface that feels designed for the form factor instead of adapted from desktop.

Pricing and availability

ASUS lists Ally X at $999.99 in the US, with the standard Ally at $599.99. Preorders opened September 25, 2025 at 5pm PT. Ally X is exclusive to Best Buy at launch, while the standard Ally is available through multiple retailers.

At $999, it sits between the Steam Deck OLED ($399 to $649) and the Legion Go 2 ($1,099 to $1,479). The hardware justifies the price. The question is whether you value Windows flexibility and Xbox integration enough to pay this much over the Steam Deck’s more polished software.

I’ll be working through a full review with extended battery run-downs, thermals, docked and handheld testing, and title-by-title settings over the next several days.

XG Mobile (new GZ34) external graphics and hub

ASUS’s updated XG Mobile is less about chasing maximum TFLOPs and more about integration. The built-in 330W PSU removes one brick from the desk, and the port complement (full-size USB-A/C, DisplayPort, HDMI, SD Express) let me treat it like a real dock instead of a single-purpose GPU box. What stood out in use wasn’t a benchmark. It was the “one-cable” rhythm. Dock, charge, display out, peripherals, done.

The crazy thing is that ASUS managed to make it smaller and lighter than last year’s model. It’s under 1 kilo at 952 grams, and it has that built-in 330-watt power supply. So the idea is you connect the XG Mobile to your ROG Xbox Ally. It can power that device, charge the device, and also power all the additional peripherals that you add through all the various ports. The vapor chamber cooling is really impressive. It weighs next to nothing, and it can cool an RTX 5090 mobile, which is crazy.

ASUS says they’re committing broader device compatibility this round. They’re going to roll out and commit to enabling the XG Mobile GZ34 on most of their devices, close to all of their devices from the last couple of years. So it’s going to be widely compatible, as opposed to the previous generation which had their own custom connectors. That matters if you intend to keep a dock through multiple laptops and handhelds. You can get it with an RTX 5090 or RTX 5070 Ti option.

ProArt P16 with Lumina Pro OLED and creator stack

On the creator side, the ProArt P16 articulates a point of view: calibrated panels first, then quiet sustained performance, then tools. The new Lumina Pro OLED is tuned for HDR highlights without nuking black floor, and the delta-E below 1 claim held up visually in side-by-side demo footage. Specular peaks hung without blooming and fine shadow texture stayed readable. For creators, that’s utility. The Lumina Pro display hits up to 1600 nits in HDR brightness, 120Hz VRR, and the best anti-reflective coating ASUS has ever done. And as opposed to some other brands, you don’t need to pay extra to get that anti-reflective coating. You get that out of the box with every ProArt PC, and it’s not a matte coating. So you don’t lose any of that crispness and sharpness. It’s about diffusing reflections without muddying the image.

Full disclosure, currently that is a Samsung Tandem OLED display. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that Asus Lumina Pro equals Samsung Tandem OLED going forward. ASUS defines it based on the contrast, the resolution, refresh rate, and nits. In the future, there might be a Lumina Pro display based on a totally different panel from a different vendor.

In hand, the system stays unnervously quiet at a power level that would usually bring fan hiss. The ProArt P16 is based on the AMD Ryzen AI9-HX370, and you can get it with up to an RTX 5090. The draw here for creators isn’t just the graphics horsepower, but the memory. 24 gigs of high-speed GDDR7 memory for video editing. And ASUS is able to run really high wattages. The CPU can be pushed up to 75 watts if you’re using the CPU only, and TGP for the GPU runs at 120 watts in performance mode. You can push it up by 10 watts more in manual to 130 watts. TPP (total platform power) is 135W in performance mode and 145W in manual mode. Dynamic boost adjusts how much power is going to the CPU, how much is going to the GPU, and ASUS added options in their software that you can adjust.

Creator Hub, MuseTree, StoryCube, and the physical ProArt Dial make common color and timeline moves more tactile. None of that replaces your workflow. It just reduces the number of tiny frictions between idea and execution. ASUS bundles Adobe Creative Cloud with all ProArt laptops. That’s a $400 USD value package, and the best part is it’s stackable. So if you have a subscription, you can stack this on top and extend it. You get up to 90 days to try all the applications.

ExpertBook P-series brings enterprise durability to prosumers

The P-series pitch is simple: take the durability, security, and service model of enterprise hardware and make it available to solo creators and small teams. ASUS created a new series called the P-Series, both for laptops and desktops, that are enterprise devices that regular end-users can buy. These devices are sort of a hybrid between a consumer device and an enterprise device. As an independent professional or somebody who works in a small startup, you don’t have access to enterprise-level support and warranty. But you do need more than just regular consumer device specs and features and reliability.

You get 24/7 VIP hotline support, on-site service. If there’s a problem with the device, someone will actually come to your place to fix it. You don’t have to go somewhere else to get it fixed or replaced. Great security and on-device security. Fingerprint sensor, plus Windows Hello, multiple authentication systems, dual BIOS, NIST security certified BIOS. Five years of guaranteed BIOS and security updates for all P-series devices. Military grade certified durability.

The P3’s modularity is the tell. Dual SO-DIMMs, both 2230 and 2280 SSD slots, a SO-DIMM slot for Wi-Fi, and a modular battery system. The battery can just be taken out. It’s not glued in place, it’s not even screwed in place. There’s a very clever latch system to swap out the battery. If you’re a really heavy power user running the same device for five years, you may want to replace the battery. Very easy to do here. You just open the laptop.

A very clever cooling system means even when you close the lid on the laptop, you can still get the full 45 watt TDP. You can get the full performance out of this system. So you can close the laptop, tuck it behind the monitor, and still get the full performance, which you cannot get on most consumer and gaming laptops. Super quiet as well. Designed for enterprise originally, these laptops run at much lower decibel levels than regular consumer or gaming devices. Reinforced hinges, reinforced I/O ports. Very important if you want to run this laptop for 5 years and keep plugging cables in and out. Physical privacy shutter on the webcam.

In practice, that meant I could imagine five years of ownership without the “do I really want to crack this open?” hesitation. ASUS’ AI ExpertMeet lives here too: local transcription and translation with watermarks for screen and camera. In a multi-lingual client call, that’s utility, not a demo trick.

GoPro collaboration

ASUS did a brand collaboration with GoPro. Depending on the laptop you’re getting, you’re getting either 3 months or 6 months of GoPro Cloud Premium. This isn’t just if you buy the new ProArt laptop. Anyone who has a ProArt, ZenBook, or VivoBook and bought it over the last two years is now able to get access to GoPro Cloud Premium for three to six months. If you’re interested in getting a new laptop and a GoPro camera, ASUS has a collaboration where you can save several hundred USD if you buy an ASUS ProArt laptop together with a GoPro camera. That’s especially interesting considering GoPro just announced a new 360 camera.

ASUS also integrated the 360 GoPro videos into StoryCube. StoryCube is an application on ASUS laptops that allows you to sort your content. It helps you index all your content, pictures, videos. You can search based on the camera, and also the people that show up in those pictures and videos. It only scans your pictures and videos for faces locally. It doesn’t upload any of that to the cloud or report it back to ASUS. It shows you the most common faces it detects in your footage. It doesn’t know who those people are. You can then name them and do a context search like “Sarah in Hawaii.” You can preview GoPro 360 videos in there and easily access the latest GoPro videos.

Refinement over specs

Across the lineup, a few patterns held. The Xbox Full Screen Experience made the Ally X feel console-native: first-boot, sign-in, library, play without constantly dropping into desktop. The Lumina Pro panels on ProArt delivered HDR without the milky laptop look. Adobe Creative Cloud bundles stack on existing subs (rare). And the GoPro collaboration inside StoryCube pulled 360 captures into a searchable asset pool in seconds. None of these change physics, but they change the number of steps between idea and execution.
