The Age of 3D Printable Footwear Is Here, and It’s Open-Source

What happens when a major 3D printer manufacturer teams up with a design studio and releases footwear files that anyone can download, print, and remix? Bambu Lab and Presq are finding out. Their Fig.(0) project takes 3D-printed shoes out of the luxury market and drops them into the maker community, where cultural relevance and customization matter more than brand names. This isn’t some half-baked Kickstarter experiment or a corporate PR stunt with limited-edition hype. It’s a fully open-source shoe design, complete with CAD files, print profiles, and a scaling system that lets you resize it for any foot. The message is clear: if you’ve got a 3D printer and some flexible filament, you’re now part of the footwear industry.

The Fig.(0) is a slip-on clog with a perforated upper, designed for comfort and breathability, but the real story isn’t the aesthetics. It’s the fact that Bambu Lab, a company known for pushing desktop 3D printing speeds to absurd limits, and Presq, a design studio with a knack for blending tech and culture, decided to drop this as a free, remixable project. They’re not selling shoes. They’re selling the idea that shoes don’t have to come from a factory halfway across the world. The files are hosted on MakerWorld, Bambu’s platform for 3D print assets, and they include everything you’d need to start printing your own pair: a pre-sliced .3mf file optimized for their H2D printers, a scaling coefficient table for resizing, and even a full CAD file for deep customization. The materials? Matte TPE 85A for the flexible parts, PLA for supports. The printer settings? Dialed in for Bambu’s machines, but adaptable if you’re willing to tweak.

Designers: Presq & Bambu Lab

You’ve seen 3D-printed shoes before, probably from brands like Adidas or Nike, who’ve been playing with lattice structures and futuristic soles for years. Those shoes cost a fortune, they’re locked behind patents, and you can’t do anything with them except wear them until they fall apart. This is different. The Fig.(0) files are open, meaning you can download them, modify them, and print them however you like. Want to add a tread pattern inspired by your favorite hiking boots? Go for it. Need a wider fit because your feet are weirdly shaped? Adjust the CAD file. The whole project is built on the idea that footwear shouldn’t be a static product but a dynamic, evolvable thing. It’s a philosophy that’s been floating around in the maker community for years, but this is the first time it’s been executed with this level of polish and intent.

The files are optimized for Bambu’s H2D printers, which are fast, reliable, and capable of handling flexible filaments like TPE. But here’s the thing: you don’t need a Bambu printer to make these work. The STL and CAD files are there, so if you’ve got a decent FDM machine that can handle TPE, you can probably get it done with some trial and error. The scaling table is a nice touch, too. Instead of guessing how to resize the shoe for your foot, you’ve got a reference that tells you exactly how to adjust the dimensions. It’s not perfect, of course. Fit is still going to be a personal experiment, especially if you’re using a different printer or material. But the fact that they’ve included these tools at all shows they’re serious about making this accessible.

Presq’s founder, Adam Saleh, has talked about keeping “cultural value closer to the communities that create it,” which is a fancy way of saying this project is as much about empowerment as it is about footwear. The idea is to shift some of the power from big brands to local makers, artists, and small businesses. It’s a noble goal, but it’s also a practical one. If you’re a designer in Lagos or a maker in Mumbai, you don’t need to wait for Nike to notice your market. You can print, customize, and sell your own versions of these shoes, tailored to your community’s needs and tastes. That’s a big deal in a world where most footwear is still mass-produced in a handful of factories and shipped globally.

The Fig.(0) isn’t just a one-off, either. Presq has said they plan to release new open-source shoe designs every month, each with its own style and functional twist. That kind of commitment turns this from a cool experiment into a legitimate movement. Imagine a future where small studios and independent makers are pumping out localized, culturally specific footwear, all built on a shared open-source foundation. It’s a vision that’s equal parts utopian and practical, and it’s one that Bambu Lab and Presq are actively pushing forward.

Of course, there are limitations. The initial release is optimized for a US Men’s Size 10, so if you’re outside that range, you’ll need to do some scaling (Presq has provided a scaling table that lets you effectively go down to a size 6 or up to a 13.5). The materials matter, too. TPE 85A is flexible and durable, but it’s not as forgiving as traditional shoe materials. If you print with something too stiff, you’ll end up with a clog that feels like a plastic prison for your feet. And while the files are open, they’re still designed with Bambu’s ecosystem in mind, so if you’re using a different printer, you might need to spend some time dialing in the settings. But these aren’t dealbreakers. They’re just the realities of working with a new, open system.

For now, though, the Fig.(0) is a proof of concept that open-source footwear can be stylish, functional, and accessible. It’s a challenge to the idea that shoes have to come from big brands with big budgets. And it’s an invitation to anyone with a 3D printer to start thinking about what footwear could look like if it were designed by the people who wear it, not the corporations that sell it. rain house: A Building Shaped by Weather

 

The Rain House by SynchroniCity Architects stands on an elevated hill in Hainan, where the rhythm of rain defines both landscape and life. Conceived during a sudden downpour, its design began with an observation of the site’s behavior under shifting weather. Rain reveals the contours of the terrain, carving paths of runoff and delineating subtle boundaries between water and land.

 

From these fleeting lines, the architects established the project’s datum — a five-meter elevation that lifts the building above the floodplain while aligning it with the natural order revealed by the storm.

 

Hainan’s monsoon climate calls for a building that’s resilient. The island’s humid air and violent typhoons leave few choices in material. Concrete became both structure and defense — dense enough to resist wind and erosion, steady enough to support life through extremes. Courtyard as Gathering Space

 

From its elevated base, SynchroniCity’s Rain House develops upward toward a square courtyard. The form recalls familiar spatial traditions, yet the architects sought openness rather than enclosure. Suspended above the landscape, the courtyard functions as the project’s heart. It’s quiet during the day when filtered light and birdsong enter through the voids, and animated in the evening when it hosts performances and informal gatherings. Its geometry gives a sense of permanence, while its elevation introduces air, light, and a sense of suspension.

 

Below, the ground floor follows a more organic rhythm. Paths bend with the contours of the hill and the pattern of the forest, forming natural corridors that allow wind and water to circulate. A colonnade, positioned with the trees and the slope, defines this lower level. Columns form a porous boundary through which sound, air, and light pass freely.

synchronicity’s Architecture in Dialogue with Water

 

At the center of the Rain House, SynchroniCity organizes a water court, where mountain spring water is guided beneath the eaves and along the line of columns. The movement of air over the surface cools the shaded corridors, creating a microclimate that adjusts to the island’s heat. The space feels both sheltered and exposed, its temperature shifting subtly with the direction of the breeze. Over time, the water court has become a favored gathering place, where the architecture’s environmental logic turns into everyday comfort.

 

The roof continues this dialogue. Rainwater collected by its sloped surfaces flows through narrow channels, cascading in thin curtains before descending to the courtyard and pond below. Each rainfall reactivates the building, transforming weather into a visible and acoustic presence. The house becomes a vessel for cycles of water, where the path of each drop traces the structure’s logic.

Beneath the courtyard lies the ‘granary,’ a subterranean art space illuminated by a single domed skylight. The room holds the coolness of stone and the echo of water, allowing light and sound to move in slow gradients. The design recalls the site’s agricultural memory while turning it inward — a place to encounter the sky through filtered light rather than open air.

 

SynchroniCity Architects preserved fragments of the site’s earlier life: a water tower, bricks reused as aggregate, a restored well reconnected to the new system. These gestures continue material lifecycles rather than commemorate them. The surfaces retain traces of formwork and local workmanship. Villagers participated in construction, their methods imprinting the building with tactile imperfections. This collective labor gives the structure a sense of continuity — it is built to evolve rather than to conclude.

The Rain House functions as a record in motion. Weather, vegetation, and occupation continually alter its surfaces. Algae creep along damp corners, fruit trees grow near the pond, and new exhibitions take place within the granary. In this environment, architecture is treated as an instrument of adaptation. Its endurance depends on maintenance and renewal.

 

The project’s broader significance lies in its method. It positions climate as an active generator of form, placing temporal and environmental processes at the core of architectural thinking. Rather than symbolizing regional identity, the Rain House allows regional conditions — wind, rain, labor — to define its structure and organization.

8 Ways Apple’s M5 Ecosystem Changes Design Workflows Across MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Vision Pro

Apple announced three M5-powered devices on October 15, 2025. The 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, and Vision Pro all receive the M5 chip, delivering up to 3.5 times faster AI performance compared to M4 and up to six times faster than M1 systems, according to Apple’s testing and benchmarks. For designers and creators, this synchronized release creates a cohesive ecosystem where tools work together rather than in isolation.

For M1 upgraders, the gains remain substantial: up to six times faster AI performance, up to 6.8 times faster GPU performance with ray tracing, and up to two times faster CPU performance.
