6 Pound Phone Case wants to limit people from using their smartphones by creating a cover that is heavy, inconvenient, and made from solid stainless steel. A project developed by Matter Neuroscience, the case comes in two separate parts that are screwed together around the phone using an Allen wrench. This design, while it can be detached, stops users from easily removing the case when they feel tempted to use their devices for a long time. 

 

The project is based on a simple principle: if using the smartphone requires more effort in carrying it, people may use it less, especially if the case weighs six pounds, which is much heavier than a normal one. The weight makes holding the device for long periods uncomfortable, and the fatigue that comes encourages users to put the phone down after short use. Over time, the design team believes that when users keep trying to hold their phones up with the six-pound case, they start to feel the strain and will rather put their devices for some reduced screen time.

The 6 Pound Phone Case design includes openings for the charging port, volume buttons, and power button, integrated into the frame. The camera hole isn’t blocked, and even if it’s bulky and heavy, users are still more than welcome to use the messaging, calls, maps, camera, and other apps, so long as they’re not tired. It’s because the change is entirely physical rather than software, so the strain is much more felt. The design team says that for the 6 Pound Phone Case, they draw the inspiration from the 1980s mobile phones, the large rectangular brick phones. 

 

The look mimics that style with the overhangs at the top and bottom and the thickness of the case. Since it is heavy and made from steel, users who’d like to treat the accessory as a gym weight can do so, which is much healthier compared to them being locked into their screens for hours. So far, the 6 Pound Phone Case is compatible with iPhone models 13 through 17, including regular, Pro, and Pro Max versions, and Matter Neuroscience has yet to expand it to other models. The team’s campaign says that the delivery for the accessory begins in December 2025.

The new twin sports halls in Frauenfeld, Switzerland, designed by kit architects, employ an innovative timber construction system that prioritizes spatial efficiency, resource conservation, and material sustainability. The compact, vertically organized layout enables both halls to fit within a limited footprint, reducing land use while maintaining functional capacity. The structure introduces Switzerland’s first application of a timber-concrete composite ceiling in a sports facility, offering a lighter and more resource-efficient alternative to conventional reinforced concrete systems.

 

A defining feature of the project is the extensive use of regionally sourced ‘beetle wood,’ harvested from the public client’s own state forest. Of the 603 cubic meters of timber used, 565 cubic meters were obtained locally. This approach minimizes transportation distances, lowers carbon emissions, and supports regional forestry management. The volume of timber used in the project regenerates naturally in Swiss forests within approximately 30 minutes, underscoring the renewable capacity of this resource.

Architecturally, the building expresses its construction logic through clearly articulated timber frameworks. The structural rhythm is visible on the exterior, complemented by continuous ribbon windows that emphasize horizontal proportions and daylight access. Inside, spruce timber surfaces contribute to a warm, balanced interior atmosphere and stable indoor climate.

 

The project is conceived with a circular construction strategy: its modular components can be dismantled and reused, extending material life cycles and reducing waste. Through its integration of local materials, modular planning, and hybrid timber engineering, Sports Halls BZT Frauenfeld by architectural studio kit establishes a reference model for resource-efficient and sustainable public architecture in Switzerland.

The Grand Egyptian Museum by heneghan peng architects has reached completion, standing just over a mile from the Pyramids of Giza. The vast complex is located on a desert plateau at the edge of Cairo, and stands as a bridge between the past and the present of the world’s most enduring civilizations. Housing 100,000 artifacts, it is the largest museum ever dedicated to a single culture.

 

From its entrance forecourt, the Museum extends outward toward the pyramids along a precise visual axis. The roofline rises in correspondence with the horizon of the three pyramids but never overtakes them. This composition frames the monuments as an ever-present backdrop, visible from within the museum’s grand rooms.

geometries draw from monumental context

 

With the design of the Grand Egyptian Museum, the architects at heneghan peng draw from the geometries embedded in its context. The museum’s internal walls radiate from a fixed point near the entrance to create a fanned floor plan that subtly directs movement toward the west. More than just a symbol, this organization informs light, circulation, and the visitor’s shifting relationship with the landscape.

 

The structure itself, largely cast in concrete, mediates the desert’s extreme conditions through mass and shade. This way, comfortable interior temperatures are achieved through the use of passive methods across the vast exhibition halls.

 

A monumental staircase runs through the building’s core, ascending six stories. The route moves from Egypt’s earliest settlements to its Coptic era, culminating in the Tutankhamen Gallery where over 5,000 artifacts are displayed together for the first time. This ascent through time is punctuated by statues and architectural fragments displayed along the landings.

Light is treated by heneghan peng architects with precision throughout its Grand Egyptian Museum. While conservation typically limits exposure to daylight, the stone-based nature of many exhibits allows filtered sunlight to enter through controlled apertures and skylights. This approach introduces a subtle and rhythmic illumination, and connects the interiors to the desert beyond.

 

With its envelope of locally-sourced limestone and sand-toned concrete, the building dissolves into its environment, catching and diffusing the shifting hues of the Giza plateau. The material palette extends even to performance. The dense concrete shell stabilizes fluctuating temperatures and reduces mechanical cooling demands. Meanwhile, the controlled use of glass and shading devices calibrates the transition between interior and exterior light levels.

Landscaped gardens designed with West 8 extend from the museum forecourt, framing views toward the pyramids while providing green space for Cairo’s residents. These gardens act as both buffer and a threshold between the museum and desert beyond.

 

Beneath the street level, an extensive network of laboratories and storage facilities supports the museum’s mission of preservation. Connected to the main building by tunnel, the conservation center is among the largest in the world, with specialized laboratories for papyrus, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, and human remains. This infrastructure emphasizes the Museum’s dual role as a public institution and a center for research, and ensures that Egypt’s material history continues to be preserved, studied, and shared with future generations.

In the lush gardens of L’Hôtel de Maisons, once the Parisian home of Karl Lagerfeld, designer Vikram Goyal unveils The Soul Garden, an installation that transforms India’s ancient animal fables into a living, multisensory landscape. Presented by The Future Perfect for Design Miami/Paris 2025, the project, on view from October 21st to 26th, 2025, bridges sculpture, craft, design, and olfactory art in collaboration with Berlin-based artist Sissel Tolaas, who translates the invisible language of scent into a medium of storytelling and emotion.

The Soul Garden reimagines India’s timeless reverence for animals as vessels of wisdom and guardianship. The installation gathers five sculpted creatures, the Tiger (Vyaghra), the Elephant and Baby Elephant (Gaja and Karabha), the Tortoise (Kurma), and the Crocodile (Nakra), crafted through the New Delhi-based designer Vikram Goyal’s signature repoussé and hollowed joinery metal techniques. ‘In India, animals are more than instinct, they are sacred, sentient, divine. Many embody essential virtues – strength, wisdom, loyalty, tranquillity,’ notes Goyal. ‘This recognition of their spiritual equivalence has led to their protection and veneration for centuries.’

 

Each animal encapsulates a moral dimension drawn from the Panchatantra, a 2,000-year-old collection of Sanskrit fables that uses animal protagonists to teach lessons in empathy, prudence, and coexistence. Within the sculptures, hidden repoussé panels reveal miniature narrative scenes inspired by these tales. Collectively, they form a contemporary bestiary, one that fuses India’s sculptural heritage with the animaliers of 20th-century Europe, such as François-Xavier Lalanne and Rembrandt Bugatti.

Sissel Tolaas translates the animal world through scent

 

For Goyal, scent became the natural language of the animal world and the essential dimension of The Soul Garden. To realize this idea, he invited Sissel Tolaas, renowned for her pioneering work in olfactory research and art, to create a smellscape that would bring emotional depth to the installation.

 

‘For animals, smell is their primary language; it’s how they find food, recognise kin, warn of danger and even express emotion,’ says Goyal. ‘Scent is a story, and in order to be true to the intelligence of animals, The Soul Garden needed to speak in this invisible but powerful register. That’s why I turned to Sissel Tolaas.’

 

Tolaas, who describes smell molecules as ‘the alphabet of the air,’ visited Goyal’s studio in New Delhi to collect molecular samples during the metalworking process. She also recorded scent profiles from real animal habitats and interactions, synthesizing each species’ olfactory signature. Using a combination of nanotechnological and analog diffusion devices embedded in the sculptures and surrounding grasses, these molecular blends subtly fill the garden with layered fragrances. ‘To engage with The Soul Garden through smell is to unlock an encounter infused with emotion, play and vulnerability,’ shares Tolaas. ‘And without an emotional reaction, there can be no action.’

Between myth and memory

 

Visitors of the Soul Garden are encouraged to sit among the sculptures, read, or simply breathe in the layered scents. Each evening at 5 pm, students from Cours Florent, Paris’s renowned performing arts school, will perform readings from the Panchatantra, animating its fables of wit and morality, the Lion and the Hare, the Monkey and the Crocodile, the Tortoise and the Birds, with renewed voice and presence. As a symbolic gesture, talismans will be offered to visitors, inviting them to become caretakers of the animals, acknowledging a shared duty of guardianship toward both mythic and living beings.

 

Through the fusion of sculpture, scent, and story, The Soul Garden emerges as a fable for the present moment—an appeal for empathy, ecology, and coexistence amid an age of disconnection. ‘It reinterprets Indian animal fables not as relics of the past but as blueprints for future thinking – about empathy, ecology, and coexistence,’ says Goyal. ‘By entering this living fable, each visitor leaves not only with a story, but a renewed role in the wider web of life.’

Custom Water-Cooled PS3 Gets a 50% Performance Boost, Running Gran Turismo 6 at 60FPS

Sony never released a “PS3 Pro,” but what if they had? Zac Builds explored that alternate timeline by engineering a water-cooled, overclocked variant that pushes a carefully selected CECH2501B model to its absolute limits. Through precision engineering, advanced materials, and custom firmware, this modified console achieves what Sony left on the table: locked 60fps in Gran Turismo 6 and dramatically smoother performance across PlayStation 3’s library.

The whole project started from a simple observation: modern hardware comes aggressively tuned from the factory, leaving maybe 3-10% performance on the table if you’re lucky. Back in the day, you could squeeze 20-30% more out of your gear just by swapping thermal paste and cranking some voltage sliders. The PS3 sits in this sweet spot where it’s old enough to have thermal headroom but modern enough to benefit from contemporary cooling solutions. Zac picked the CECH2501B specifically because it’s the Goldilocks model: efficient 45nm CPU and 40nm GPU that sip about 50% less power than launch units, but crucially, still hackable. Later super slim models locked down the security, making them overclock-proof.

Designer: Zac Builds

The tear-down revealed exactly why every PS3 owner should be nervous. Those integrated heat spreaders covering the CPU and GPU use thermal interface material that dries out over time, turning your console into a space heater. The GPU’s spreader was literally glued down, requiring hot air and steady nerves to pry off without destroying the chip. The CPU spreader used a silicone ring that needed careful knife work to remove. One wrong move and you’ve got an expensive paperweight. Once Zac got them off, he installed PTM7950, which looks like boring gray plastic but melts into an extremely effective thermal compound under heat. High-temp RTV silicone sealed everything back up, giving a flexible, heat-resistant bond that should outlast the console itself.

Here’s where things get interesting from a design perspective. The PS3’s CPU and GPU sit at different heights, which killed the idea of a single unified water block. Zac machined two separate aluminum blocks and had to figure out how to mount them with proper pressure while fitting everything inside the original chassis. He used 3D scanning tech accurate to the width of a human hair to create digital replicas of the motherboard, then designed custom mounting hardware in CAD. The BambuLab P2S cranked out parts in carbon fiber reinforced nylon for the water block mounts, which then got annealed at 85°C for 24+ hours. That annealing step matters because without it, nylon parts slowly warp under heat and pressure, losing mounting tension over time. The result was parts that tested 20-30% stiffer and far more dimensionally stable.

The cooling loop itself uses a 120mm radiator, Noctua fan, pump with integrated reservoir, and soft PVC tubing with elbow fittings to prevent kinking in tight spaces. Zac added copper heatsinks on top of the water blocks as backup cooling if the pump ever dies. The whole system draws power from the factory fan connector, which originally pulled over an amp by itself. He designed an airbox from glass fiber reinforced ABS that sits where the old fan used to be, maintaining airflow across the PSU and other components that depend on it. The top shell got carefully cut to accommodate everything while preserving the mounting clips, then a custom housing with honeycomb grilles and a fill port completed the package. Total print time for the housing alone hit 48 hours.

Stock temperatures hovered around 61°C for the CPU and 67°C for the GPU under load. Water cooling dropped both to 40°C, and even under maximum overclock they barely touched 43°C. That thermal headroom let Zac push the GPU to 750MHz and VRAM to 925MHz, representing 50% and 42% increases from stock respectively. He found the limits by cranking clocks until visual artifacts appeared, then backing off to stable speeds. Custom firmware that dropped right before he started the project allowed on-the-fly adjustment, which was perfect timing considering how old the PS3 actually is.

The performance gains vary wildly by title. Uncharted 2 jumped from high 30s to low 50s fps, showing near-linear scaling with the clock increase. BioShock Infinite saw a 50% uplift, sometimes approaching 60fps. Gran Turismo 6 went from mid-40s to a locked 60fps experience. Watchdogs barely improved and stayed borderline unplayable, likely CPU-bottlenecked since the Cell processor can’t be overclocked. Games with uncapped framerates benefited most, feeling dramatically smoother and more responsive.

The kicker? Temperature wasn’t the limiting factor at all. Zac admits you could probably hit similar overclocks with just fresh thermal paste and a better fan. Water cooling proved overkill for the actual thermal load. But that’s the value of this kind of project: definitively answering the “what if” question even when the answer is “you didn’t need to go that far.” It’s the same reason people water cool gaming PCs when a good air cooler would suffice. You’re not doing it because you have to. You’re doing it because you can, and because the engineering challenge itself has value.

Modern flagship phones occasionally use vapor chamber cooling, and some gaming phones have experimented with active cooling attachments. But water cooling on portable or console devices remains rare because the complexity and failure points outweigh the benefits for most users. Manufacturers have gotten incredibly good at thermal management through better chip design, smarter boost algorithms, and efficient heat spreading. The iPhone 16 Pro manages serious performance in a fanless chassis. The Steam Deck pushes respectable frame rates with a single small fan. These devices arrive so well-optimized that modification offers minimal returns, which is great for consumers but boring for tinkerers.

That’s what makes the PS3 such a compelling platform for this kind of work. It comes from an era where manufacturers left performance on the table, either due to cost constraints, reliability concerns, or simple lack of optimization.
