The Coat Stand goes beyond mere functionality; it becomes a carrier of gesture. Traditionally, an object of service, designed to hold, to carry, here, it asserts its own sculptural purpose. In this solid walnut totem, the rhythmic composition of cylinders, each with its unique grain, highlights the individuality of the material while maintaining a sense of connection.

 

The Candelabrum introduces an exploration of both personal and collective rituals. Traditionally found in ecclesiastical spaces, designer Haritini Gritzali recomposes it here through a bold geometric form. Crafted from brushed aluminium, a material rarely used in such ceremonial objects, it creates an unexpected contrast. Industrial yet ceremonial, the Candelabrum stands with the austerity of a contemporary monastic relic.

The Paravent introduces to Objects of Service a material carrying a distinct history. Brushed aluminum frames encase panels of cotton weaves that are carefully sourced from now-defunct Greek textile workshops. These fabrics are remnants of a traditional craft that has faded, yet their presence endures, each one holding a unique tone, texture, and memory. Delicately hand-covered buttons fasten the fabric to the frame, subtly contrasting with the industrial precision of the aluminum. On the outskirts of Ahmedabad, India, Achyutam Designs’ Carapace House takes shape within a duo of monolithic concrete shells. The farmhouse replaces the familiar image of the home and its rectilinear plans and upright walls with two organic, sculptural forms — one of which houses shared spaces for living and gathering, while the other contains two private bedrooms.

 

Allowing this distinct tubular geometry to become the defining characteristic, the project’s material strategy remains consistent and direct, utilizing poured concrete shaped into curved profiles that eliminate the distinction between wall and roof. Cuts are also introduced along edges and at the core, carefully skewed to form arcing thresholds or open voids. These strategic openings also frame greenery, modulate light, and connect views across the property.

The natural landscape becomes essential to the architectural experience of Carapace House. A meandering path lined with dense vegetation leads up to it, and along the way the monolithic structures are gradually revealed. Water features, trees, and arc-shaped corridors orchestrate movement across the site, while a series of nested outdoor areas such as courtyards, gazebos, a pool, and a barbecue area extend the living space into the garden. The architecture further participated in the nature, offering a spatial reciprocity.

 

Achyutam Designs crafts the interiors to follow the same logic of material restraint and integration. Furniture is cast in concrete and integrated into the architecture itself, with beds, benches, and side tables emerging from the same surface language as the walls. The flooring is polished Kota stone, its muted, earthy tone reflecting daylight and echoing the subdued palette throughout.

Kurahito Craft channel on YouTube shows how to transform a hard slab of wood into a flexible, see-through lampshade cover and more. Instead of using ingredients to make the wood soft or using a piece that has already been altered, either in form or through components, the Japanese content creator uses just a piece of timber for the project. He needs the help of a table saw for the process, too. He begins the flexible wooden lampshade cover by shaping the main material into an oval. To do this, he uses another piece of wood as a guide, also called a fence.

 

The craftsman holds everything in place with a clamp. He adjusts the height and angle of the blade, then lowers it before starting the cut. He trims along the fence, resulting in a rail-like shape. This is risky, so people who want to try it at home should proceed with caution. The creator makes the cuts in small steps. After completing one side, he measures and processes the other until the form looks like the letter M. He uses a hand plane to smooth the sharp corners. After that, the process that he describes as ‘yaruki’ begins for the flexible wooden lampshade cover.

Kurahito Craft keeps on cutting the wood until the shape starts to resemble a centipede. However, it still breaks when it bends. He then switches to a thicker piece of wood and changes the design; this time, cutting all four sides instead of adding more oval cuts. He repeats the earlier process and then smooths the surface using a sanding machine. He uses a flat plate to continue cutting the pieces. The result gives him a flexible wooden lampshade cover that looks like a flower or a gas burner. When he bends it this time, it doesn’t break and keeps its shape. 

 

When it’s time to test it out, the content creator fits a lightbulb in the middle, and the now cut timber is able to hold its new shape. The flexible wooden lampshade cover isn’t the only end result of Kurahito Craft’s project. Designers can adopt the technique to make structures and modular fixtures from wood instead of using other components or additives. The approach also allows users to create designs that are suited for specific functions or what they need, with the flexible wooden lampshade cover as just an example.

Sensing the Future: Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.)

 

At LUMA Arles, a pivotal chapter in the history of postwar art and innovation takes center stage in Sensing the Future: Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.). This landmark exhibition, the first in France to explore the legacy of E.A.T. in depth, is presented in collaboration with the Getty Research Institute and traces the history of a movement that brought together hundreds of key avant-garde artists and the engineers who ushered in the information age. Founded in 1966 by artists Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Whitman alongside Billy Klüver and Fred Waldhauer, engineers at Bell Telephone Laboratories — then the world’s leading center for electronic innovation and telecommunications research — E.A.T. emerged as a radical platform that reimagined the possibilities of creative practice through direct collaboration between artists and technologists.

 

On view through January 11, 2026, the exhibition surveys a transformative period in which the barriers between disciplines—between art and science, experimentation and activism—were actively dismantled. Through a wealth of archival documents, film footage, case studies, and rarely exhibited works by figures such as John Cage, Fujiko Nakaya, Andy Warhol, and Rauschenberg himself, Sensing the Future traces the movement’s arc from the heady optimism of the late 1960s through its more decentralized but no less ambitious projects of the 1970s.‘The mid-60s to mid-70s period were by all accounts the most fervent years of E.A.T.,’ Simon Castets, Director of Strategic Initiatives at LUMA, tells designboom. ‘The stars were truly aligned, not only in terms of funding, but also of mutual fascination between the then impermeable realms of art and science.’ The 1973 oil crisis signaled a shift: public funding dried up, and technology itself became more accessible, prompting many participants to pursue independent trajectories. Even so, Billy Klüver —together with his partner Julie Martin— remained devoted to stewarding E.A.T.’s legacy, preserving an archive that would later prove indispensable to understanding the entwined histories of art and technology. By revisiting the trajectory of the movement, Sensing the Future offers more than historical reflection. It reveals how the questions posed by E.A.T.—about interdisciplinary exchange, innovation, and the future as a shared project—remain not only relevant, but urgent.

LUMA ARLES UNPACKS THE HISTORY OF E.A.T. IN LANDMARK EXHIBITION

 

Sensing the Future takes over the Living Archives Gallery of the LUMA Arles Tower, unpacking the landmark moments that defined E.A.T.’s short but influential lifespan. The exhibition begins with a deep dive into the group’s beginnings in the mid-1960s, tracing how a visionary alliance between artists and engineers gave rise to one of the most ambitious interdisciplinary initiatives of the 20th century. Artworks and documentation outline E.A.T.’s establishment in 1966 through the 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering event in New York, where ten artists, among them John Cage, Lucinda Childs, Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Whitman, teamed up with dozens of Bell Labs engineers to stage multimedia performances that employed infrared cameras, wireless sound transmission, and video projection—technologies then still foreign to the art world.

 

From that unlikely synergy grew an ethos of experimentation, grounded in collaboration, access, and action. Among E.A.T.’s most ambitious undertakings was the Pepsi Pavilion at Expo ’70 in Osaka, Japan. Artists Robert Whitman, Robert Breer, David Tudor, and Forrest (Frosty) Myers made early contributions to the design of the pavilion, while eventually the design team grew to twenty artists and fifty engineers and scientists. Conceived as a gesamtkunstwerk, or total artwork, the pavilion featured a geodesic dome clad in a mirror-finished surface, an internal sound-responsive light system, and a water-vapor cloud sculpture by Japanese artist Fujiko Nakaya. Her contribution—an enveloping cloud of artificial mist that obscured and transformed the pavilion’s form—ushered a new vocabulary of ephemeral, site-specific art that blurred perception and challenged the dominance of the visual in technological environments. More than half a century later, Nakaya’s legacy continues to reverberate across contemporary practice. Alongside Sensing the Future, another of her works, Fog Sculpture #07563, is on view as part of LUMA’s concurrent exhibition, Streaming from Our Eyes (evolving title, formerly Dance with Daemons).

THE RADICAL MOVEMENT’S ENDURING LEGACY

 

Whether through the immersive fog-drenched environments of the Pepsi Pavilion at Expo ’70 in Osaka or civic initiatives addressing environmental design and urban communication, E.A.T. continually pushed the boundaries of what art could do—and whom it could serve. A pivotal section of the exhibition is dedicated to Projects Outside Art, a bold strand of E.A.T.’s activities that extended the group’s collaborative ethos beyond the traditional confines of the art world. First presented as an exhibition in New York in 1971, Projects Outside Art marked a shift toward socially engaged, systems-oriented experimentation. ‘Projects Outside Art ushered in a series of exploratory initiatives across the world in partnership with governmental agencies and universities, aimed at broadening the scope and impact of E.A.T.’s mission, as well as its international reach,’ notes Simon Castets. ‘With, for example, research into the educational potential of television in India, El Salvador and Guatemala, E.A.T.’s ambition reflected a deep belief in advanced technologies as a means to advance social aims. While more often than not the projects remained unrealized, their methodology and ethos of cross-disciplinary collaboration have had an undeniable impact on our way of thinking today’s infrastructures of innovation.’

 

In an age increasingly defined by technological acceleration and its discontents, the utopian idealism at the heart of E.A.T.—the belief that artists could meaningfully shape the trajectory of technological progress—feels at once remote and urgently necessary. As Simon Castets observes, ‘today, innovation is much more frequently framed as a threat, often rightfully so. Yet, the legacy of E.A.T.’s collaborative spirit could help bring out technology’s positive potential across fields.’  Much like the early 20th-century Futurists envisioned the artist as a vital force within industrial society, E.A.T. imagined new roles for artists across domains as varied as education, public policy, and environmental research. Reengaging with that vision today invites us to reconsider the artist’s capacity not only to reflect society, but to reshape it—through dialogue, through experimentation, and through the conviction that creativity and criticality belong at the core of every system we build.

LUMA’S LONG-TERM INTEREST IN artist-led use of technologies

 

Sensing the Future originated as part of the 2024 edition of PST ART: Art & Science Collide, a region-wide initiative presented by the J. Paul Getty Trust across Southern California, comprising over 60 exhibitions and public programs exploring the intersections of artistic and scientific inquiry. Organized by the Getty Research Institute (GRI)—a global leader in visual culture research and home to one of the world’s most extensive art libraries—the exhibition brought renewed scholarly and curatorial focus to E.A.T.’s interdisciplinary legacy. In adapting the show for its European debut at LUMA Arles, the curatorial team embraced both continuity and expansion. ‘E.A.T. is much better known in the U.S. than in France,’ notes Simon Castets. ‘Therefore, in the additional time we had, it behooved us to build upon the extraordinary research done by the Getty Research Institute and include additional works and archival elements. The core structure of the exhibition remains the same, yet, together with Getty, the work continued and we were able to also feature key artworks by other essential figures of that history, including Marta Minujín, Wen-Ying Tsai, Andy Warhol, Lilian Schwartz, and Hans Haacke, alongside dozens of archival documents.’

 

As the first exhibition in France devoted exclusively to E.A.T., Sensing the Future reflects LUMA Arles’ long-term research interest in the artist-led use of technologies. ‘LUMA’s longstanding commitment to artist-led, innovation-driven initiatives resonates with E.A.T.’s pioneering collaborations between artists and engineers,’ Castets explains. Both share a belief in the generative power of process over product, valuing experimentation as a catalyst for new ways of thinking.’ This alignment lends the exhibition not only historical significance but also a pressing contemporary urgency. At a time when the role of the artist is increasingly intertwined with disciplines ranging from environmental research to artificial intelligence, Sensing the Future underscores how fertile such crossovers can be, particularly when grounded in mutual respect, curiosity, and the open-ended nature of experimentation itself.

Models of Crisis is a series of three generative kinetic objects by designer Jakub Koźniewski that explore the potential of physical-digital systems to express internal psychological states. Each object integrates mechanical motion with algorithmically generated text, forming a hybrid of kinetic sculpture and computational language.

 

Developed using Large Language Models (LLMs), the work functions as a study in the abstraction and modeling of emotional and cognitive processes. It examines how digital tools typically used for data-driven simulations, commonly applied to climate, economics, or language, can also be utilized to model subjective mental experiences. The objects use LLMs trained on input reflecting specific emotional and psychological conditions. The resulting generated text is presented on 14-segment alphanumeric displays with motion mechanisms, functioning as hybrid devices for text display and spatial performance. The result is a series of kinetic poems that combine algorithmically generated language with physical actuation.

Models of Crisis digitally express psychological states

 

Mood Swing is a system that represents constantly fluctuating sentiments. The display changes in rhythm with movement, visualizing emotional instability. Train of Thought is a continuous scrolling mechanism delivering an uninterrupted sequence of generated anxious and regretful reflections. It simulates the recursive nature of overthinking and cognitive loops. Rise & Shine is a cascading form that cycles through affirming statements. The physical motion reflects repetitive and ultimately unproductive reassurance mechanisms.

 

The project developed by designer Jakub Koźniewski references the literary constraints and structure of the OuLiPo movement, applying these principles through contemporary digital and mechanical means. Models of Crisis presents a design-led approach to the synthesis of linguistic abstraction and engineered form.

Kyoto’s Solo Tea Room Blends Japanese Tradition With Contemporary Micro-Architecture

Perched quietly in the mountains north of Kyoto, Le Picabier is a micro tea room that redefines the notion of solitude and ritual in architecture. Designed by Studio 2m26 in collaboration with French practice Onomiau, this diminutive pavilion—intended for a single guest—offers an exquisite blend of tradition, material honesty, and site-specific design. Commissioned by Villa Kujoyama, the project stands as a poetic response to its environment, inviting reflection on both nature and the act of tea itself.

The structure’s distinctive chimney-like silhouette, clad in charred cedar shingles, instantly sets it apart from conventional tea houses. The use of yakisugi, the Japanese technique of burning wood for preservation, not only gives Le Picabier its striking black exterior but also grounds the building firmly in the local tradition of craftsmanship. This method enhances both the texture and longevity of the pavilion, while the deep, tactile surfaces evoke the beauty found in imperfection and transience—core themes of Japanese aesthetics.

Designer: 2m26 x Onomiau

Inside, Le Picabier is a study in mindful minimalism. Natural light filters through the narrow space, shifting throughout the day to create an ever-changing play of shadow and texture. A single lantern suspended above the guest casts flickering candlelight, marking the subtle passage of time and further heightening the sense of introspection. The black tatami mat flooring, crafted by Mitsuru Yokoyama, and sparse furnishings encourage a meditative focus on the ritual at hand, with every detail supporting an atmosphere of quiet contemplation.

The tea room’s vertical emphasis is both visual and experiential. The tall chimney serves as the pavilion’s focal point, drawing the gaze upward and reinforcing a sense of aspiration and spiritual retreat. The integrated fire pit, essential for boiling water, becomes the heart of the space—its warmth and glow connecting the guest to elemental forces. This combination of verticality and warmth transforms the small structure into a sanctuary, where silence and simplicity become luxuries in themselves.

Le Picabier’s design is deeply informed by the legacy of Sen no Rikyū, the 16th-century tea master who revolutionized the Japanese tea ceremony by embracing shadow, silence, and the beauty of imperfection. Yet, the project is unmistakably contemporary, merging traditional Japanese elements with a European sensibility brought by Onomiau. Its compact footprint and careful use of materials make it an exemplary case of micro-architecture, where constraints become sources of creativity and meaning.

In a world increasingly dominated by noise and distraction, Le Picabier offers a rare kind of architectural experience—one that prioritizes solitude, sensory awareness, and connection to place. By distilling the tea house to its essence, Studio 2m26 and Onomiau have crafted more than a shelter; they have created a space for personal ritual and reflection. It’s a timely reminder that even the smallest buildings can inspire profound encounters between people, objects, and the natural world.
