This project brings together two cabins as a single retreat, each built with a sense of gentle connection to the land. The design is shaped by respect for the steep terrain, using the contours of the hillside to inform both layout and orientation. The cabins are blessed with a southern view, which serenely opens up to the fjord, creating a fascinating connection with the landscape.

The house is organized into a pair of rectangular forms that sit slightly offset from each other. One of these is taller and slimmer, acting as the entry point and forming a light-filled corridor that stretches along the property. Next to it, a lower wing contains the living spaces and extends outward, hovering above the hillside. On arrival, the taller section presents an unadorned, windowless facade, keeping the interior private until one steps inside and encounters a long expanse of glass revealing the fjord beyond. Above, a strip of clerestory windows brings daylight into the central passage.

At either end, the two structures seem to weave together, unified by their exterior cladding, which wraps around and forms a sheltered porch at the entrance. This lower portion meets the ground, anchoring the building into its setting. The choice of dark timber for the exterior enhances the sense that the home is an organic extension of the slope, appearing almost as if it has emerged from the forested hillside itself.

The interiors follow a theme of calm minimalism, using natural materials that echo the surrounding forest. Simple wood finishes and large windows keep the focus on the view and the changing light. This Cybertruck-inspired aluminium body mouse designed for precision and durability

As someone who has cycled through a fair share of plastic-bodied mouse over the years – each promising durability, comfort, or style, yet eventually falling short – discovering a design that finally feels both premium and practical is rare. This aluminium-body mouse immediately stands out not through loud branding or gimmicks, but through its minimalistic industrial appeal and tactile integrity. This outrightly looks inspired by the Cybertruck, and gets a big thumbs up from me.

The full-metal chassis, forged from anodized aluminum, lends the device a distinct sense of refinement and weight. Stick Drift on the Switch 2? Teardown of Nintendo Console reveals a Potential Hardware Issue

It’s 2025, and we’re still talking about Joy-Con drift. Not in past tense. Not as a resolved issue. We’re talking about it because a teardown of the Nintendo Switch 2’s shiny new controllers shows a familiar, almost nostalgic design choice: the same potentiometer-based thumbsticks that turned the original Joy-Cons into warranty nightmares and Reddit DIY projects.

Nintendo claims the sticks are bigger and more durable this time, but the internals still look like a remix of the same old song—plastic sliders rubbing against carbon pads, inviting the same wear-and-tear patterns we’ve seen before. Stick drift wasn’t just a minor inconvenience on the original Switch. It was a flaw so widespread it spawned lawsuits and third-party fixes like the GuliKit electromagnetic joysticks, which completely bypassed the contact-based input system. So seeing a similar build in the Switch 2’s Joy-Cons is like spotting an old leak in a new house. It’s patched, but you still hear the drip in your sleep.

There was a real opportunity here to move on. Hall effect sensors exist, and they’re already a staple in aftermarket mods for players who got tired of recalibrating every few months. Magnetic sensors eliminate friction, meaning there’s no wear point to begin with. They cost a bit more, sure, but in a $399 console that’s aiming for longevity, that cost is an investment. Instead, Nintendo has chosen to double down on refinement rather than reinvention, something people paying upwards of $400 will definitely be a little annoyed about.

What’s more, the teardown shows the same metal dome contact points and similar housing, with minor tweaks to stick housing and spring tension. Nothing suggests a fundamental redesign. If this were a car, we’d be praising the new paint job while ignoring the fact that it still leaks oil after 50,000 miles. And to be fair, drift isn’t guaranteed. It’s a statistical risk, not a certainty. But that’s what makes it worse is that it sneaks up, often outside the warranty window, turning precision gaming into an exercise in frustration.

Nintendo’s defense hinges on improved durability testing, claiming higher thresholds for stress and longevity. But those are internal metrics. Until real-world usage proves otherwise, skepticism will linger. The Switch 2 is already under scrutiny for a scratch-prone display and repair costs that are up to 92% higher than its predecessor. Adding controller reliability to the list doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.

For now, even with people using it for less than 48 hours, the performance leap feels real. Games that chugged on the original Switch now hum along, load times are dramatically better, and the console feels ready for another console cycle. But if the Joy-Cons start drifting again, that progress will be undermined by a very 2017 problem. Nintendo built a new console. Let’s hope they didn’t copy-paste its worst flaw.

This Car Company Got Banned For Being “Too Good” – This Concept Could Revive Its Legacy

They didn’t get banned for cheating. Chaparral got banned for being too clever. In the 1960s and ’70s, while others played by the rules, Chaparral rewrote them by building cars with active aerodynamics, vacuum fans, and semi-automatic transmissions long before Formula 1 caught up. They were banned, blacklisted, and eventually faded out. But judging by this new Centurion concept, they’re not done rewriting the book yet.

The Centurion isn’t interested in retro tribute. It’s a resurrection that looks forward, not back – an audacious machine built around the bones of what Chaparral always represented: functional chaos dressed up as design. Its silhouette is impossibly low, a fusion of LMP1 aggression and stealth-fighter angularity, layered with exposed aero elements and carbon panels that feel well within Chaparral’s wheelhouse of ‘pushing the limits’.

The body looks like it was sculpted by wind and then reassembled by a pit crew armed with carbon fiber and caffeine. That gaping front end looks like it’s inhaling the asphalt. You can spot hints of the classic Chaparral 2J, the infamous “sucker car,” in the exaggerated skirts and low-slung frame, but now it’s paired with a single-seater layout and an unapologetically futuristic silhouette. Everything’s wide, chopped, and aggressive – more hypercar than prototype racer.

Aerodynamics are the soul of this thing. The exposed suspension, turbine-style wheels, and ductwork that seems to slice through the body all scream function-first, but the design doesn’t compromise on theatrics. There are layered lighting elements, fighter-jet-like fenders, and that gorgeous blade-thin rear lightbar stretched across an oversized diffuser that looks ready to vacuum-seal itself to the road. The tail section reads like a tribute to LMP1 design, but it’s been rewritten in brutalist calligraphy.

And yet, there’s restraint in the madness. Every detail is justified. The exaggerated wheel arches and open suspension arms? Downforce. The rear diffuser that stretches like a canyon under the tail? Ground effect. The seat carved directly into the monocoque, flanked by that “STEP HERE” footwell? Minimal mass, maximum intent. There’s not a single inch of wasted volume.

Designer Jobin Sunil’s Centurion strips away all the pleasantries. No windshield, no doors, no distractions. It’s a scalpel of a machine, pointed squarely at the future of performance. The entire rear is a sculpture of tension and utility – complete with a continuous taillight blade and dual venturi tunnels that look like they could suck small animals clean off the road.

There aren’t any performance specs- and rightly so. This is a design exercise, not a production prototype. It’s not promising lap times or horsepower figures. It’s exploring what a Chaparral could be today if it didn’t have to answer to race regulations or showroom practicality. The concept stays true to the brand’s history of challenging convention, not for shock value but to reframe what a performance car can prioritize.

Nothing’s Upcoming Headphone (1) Could Be the AirPods Max Killer We Need

Can you think of one smartphone brand that’s also a leader in the audio space? The knee-jerk response would probably be Apple for obvious reasons – the company’s acquisition of Beats by Dre helped cement its place in the audio hardware industry (after the iPod’s sunsetting relevance). What other company can you think of? Sony? Well, their Xperia lineup isn’t as impactful as it once was. You COULD say Samsung, given that they acquired Harman, which owns Harman Kardon, JBL, and AKG, but it’s not like Samsung’s taken those brands forward or developed them into something great the way Apple has with the AirPods and AirPods Max.

The only other company firmly entrenched in the smartphone and audio space is probably Nothing, with their series of ‘Ear’ TWS earbuds, but the company has big plans for the future, with the launch of the Headphone (1) on the 1st of July, along with the hinghly anticipated flagship Phone (3).

It seems only natural for the company to build vertically in an industry it’s currently a part of. The Ear series has a bunch of SKUs, both regular and budget-friendly… and Nothing’s done the same for its phone too. That being said, it’s spent its time analyzing and mastering the supply chain in a way that makes launching a headphone a lot easier now, after 3 years of being in the public eye.

“It’s our first over-the-head headphones,” Carl Pei said yesterday at SXSW in London. “A lot of our users have been asking for it.”

A video on Nothing’s YouTube channel earlier last month saw the internal team discussing the upcoming headphones, stating that they managed to strike a balance between premium-grade sound and a budget-friendly price tag. No concrete details have been mentioned as far as actual features or specs are concerned (there’s no mention of glyph lighting either), so we’re flying absolutely blind into this announcement.

It is, however, a tad bit funny that Nothing didn’t choose to name their product the Nothing Head (1) following the nomenclature from their Ear line. I’m sure the marketing team had their own reservations, but we’re now certain that it’ll be called the Nothing Headphone (1). The headphone will also supposedly be the first product as a collaborative venture between Nothing and British audio company KEF.

Beyond Watches: The Complete Enthusiast

Yanko Design: How would you describe yourself to our readers on Yanko Design?

Filip Brabec: “I’m a car enthusiast, a watch enthusiast, a design enthusiast, and a tech enthusiast. I’ve always been drawn to technology and industrial products. At the core, it’s design and mechanics that truly fascinate me.”

Brabec’s interests extend well beyond horology into broader areas of design and engineering. “I also love fashion and style. I’m drawn to the aesthetic qualities, the sense of luxury, and the lifestyle that comes with it. All of these things come together for me.”

This multifaceted approach to collecting and appreciation helps explain his attraction to brands like Hublot that operate at the intersection of multiple disciplines. “They somehow come together for me in vehicles and in what I do. But they also come together for me in watches, because you have all these elements there. You have design, mechanical precision, esthetics, and materials. There’s so much depth, and it’s incredibly rich.”

The connection between his professional background in technology and his collecting preferences creates a coherent philosophy that values innovation, materials science, and functional design over pure tradition or heritage.

The Technology Behind the Bold Design

YD: What initially drew you to Hublot when most collectors focus on traditional Swiss brands?

FB “I like new and modern watches because I like technology. I work for a very high tech brand, and so my fascination with Hublot is really the tech, the bold design, and actually very clever use of materials.”

Brabec’s attraction to Hublot stems from the brand’s approach to modern watchmaking, which aligns with his professional background in technology. Unlike collectors who seek the heritage and tradition of established manufacturers, he gravitates toward innovation and contemporary design solutions.

“The motto of Hublot is the art of fusion,” Brabec explains. “It was started by Jean Claude Biver, who bought the brand in its very beginning. I had the pleasure of meeting Jean Claude and having a fairly extensive lunch with him, and so he told me about the brand, and I got to tour the brand.”

Jean Claude Biver, who served as CEO of Hublot from 2004 until his retirement in 2018, transformed the brand from a niche 1980s watchmaker into a global luxury powerhouse. Under his leadership, Hublot became known for its “Art of Fusion” philosophy, which involves combining unconventional materials in watch construction.

“Art of fusion actually means fusing different materials together,” Brabec notes. “For example, in the beginning, even before the modern era, they had gold with rubber, so gold watch with a rubber strap. And later on, of course, they got to mix different things.”

This material innovation extends beyond aesthetics into functional design. Hublot’s modular construction allows owners to customize their timepieces in ways that traditional watches cannot accommodate.

“What I also like about all of these is that they’re modular, so you can actually take this bezel, take it off and put a different bezel,” Brabec explains. “The beauty of it is that in its life as the watch gets serviced, you don’t have to replace the whole watch. You can just replace a certain piece of it. So the modularity was part of a clever idea around the design.”

The First Piece: Big Bang Red Magic

YD: Tell us about your first Hublot and what made it special.

FB: “My first Hublot was Big Bang Red Magic, and I absolutely thought it was the coolest watch ever. First of all, Hublot was kind of an inventor of an All Black Watch, and it was also part of a statement.”

The Big Bang Red Magic represents Hublot’s bold approach to color and materials in luxury watchmaking. The watch features a black ceramic case with red accents, including red markers and a red-tinted crystal, creating a striking visual contrast that exemplifies the brand’s willingness to challenge traditional watch aesthetics.

“What’s very funny about All Black Watch is that Jean Claude would say, you know, it’s funny. Average price of a new Hublot is about 20,000 euros. And he said people would buy them, but they couldn’t read what time it is, because it’s black on black,” Brabec recalls with amusement. “But that kind of is part of what speaks to this, which is it’s also a statement, and it’s also piece of jewelry, and it’s also this lifestyle thing.”

The Red Magic variant addresses the legibility issue while maintaining the bold aesthetic. “Red magic is basically a Black Watch, but it had red markers. It also had a red face. And then the coolest thing about it, it had stitching on the strap, on a black strap. But the coolest thing about it was red crystal glass over the top.”

This red sapphire crystal represents a significant technical achievement in watchmaking. Creating colored sapphire crystal requires precise control of trace elements during the crystal growth process, resulting in a material that maintains the hardness and scratch resistance of traditional sapphire while adding visual impact.

The Strap System Revolution

For Brabec, Hublot’s modular strap system isn’t just clever engineering. It’s the gateway to a more personal kind of watch ownership. “The other thing that I love is the whole release strap concept. It lets you swap in a lot of different straps, not just in terms of color but also material. You can go with rubber, leather, crocodile, or even fabric like cloth. Some come in beautifully stitched leather, for example. There’s a huge variety available.”

That variety isn’t just theoretical. Brabec owns more than ten straps for his Hublot tourbillon, each radically shifting the look and feel of the watch. “I love them because they’re all so different. It’s like having different watches.”

His collection ranges from refined leather finishes to playful, unconventional styles. “In Japan, very popular, and I really love those straps, are camo straps. So I have a blue camo, for example. I have a green camo. I also have a very bright green camo, which is different shades of green, and it’s creative and cool and fun.”

The quick-release mechanism turns a single case into a wardrobe of design expressions. Brabec explains how this supports his natural instinct for coordination. “The whole lifestyle aspect of it is also great, because you can change them often, and wear different colors together, and I’m big on color matching. That’s how my brain works. I’m not trying to make it a statement. It’s how I like things. And so it works for me esthetically.”

There’s also a comfort factor that traditional luxury brands often overlook. “It’s greatly wearable, partially because of the rubber straps. They’re super flexible and really easy to put on.” The adaptability of the system, both visually and physically, reflects a shift toward watches that integrate more naturally into a fast-changing, style-conscious lifestyle. For Brabec, that translates to enduring value. “That watch will forever be special. I doubt I would ever get rid of it.”

The practical benefits extend beyond aesthetics. “It’s greatly wearable, partially because of the rubber straps. They’re super flexible and really easy to put on,” Brabec notes. This focus on wearability represents a departure from traditional luxury watches that often prioritize appearance over comfort.

The Prized Possession: Limited Edition Tourbillon

YD: Your current favorite watch is quite special. Can you tell us about it?

FB: “The watch we looked at this morning is Hublot Big Bang Tourbillon. It was my first tourbillon, which is an amazing complication and one that only few are privileged to make. They made only 18 pieces. It was a limited edition developed for Japanese market.”

This limited edition Big Bang Tourbillon represents the pinnacle of Hublot’s technical capabilities. Limited to just 18 pieces for the Japanese market, it combines the brand’s signature bold aesthetics with one of watchmaking’s most prestigious complications.

“What’s cool about it, and what speaks to me so much is because it’s quintessential Hublot. It’s Big Bang. The case is Big Bang. It’s carbon, and the movement is suspended, so it’s a skeletonized watch. And with that tourbillon complication, and the fact that it’s an automatic watch, which many tourbillons aren’t, makes it a super attractive watch.”

The tourbillon, invented in 1795 by Abraham-Louis Breguet, was originally designed to counteract the effects of gravity on pocket watch movements. In modern wristwatches, it serves more as a demonstration of watchmaking prowess than a functional necessity. The addition of an automatic winding system to a tourbillon movement represents a significant technical challenge, as the delicate tourbillon cage must be balanced against the weight and motion of the automatic rotor.

“It’s also black on black with black markers. That was also unique about the edition,” Brabec continues. This monochromatic approach exemplifies Hublot’s distinctive design language while creating a sophisticated backdrop for the tourbillon complication to take center stage.

The watch’s carbon fiber construction further demonstrates Hublot’s material innovation. Carbon fiber offers exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and a distinctive visual texture that traditional watchmaking materials cannot match.

“Because I had a chance to visit the factory, I have seen their room, where only the top of the top masters get to work, because tourbillon is such a difficult complication to develop and to build,” Brabec explains. This insight into the manufacturing process has deepened his appreciation for the craftsmanship involved.

The Crown Jewel: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar

YD: You mentioned having a piece that you’ll truly never sell. Tell us about that watch.

FB: “The most amazing piece that I have is a limited edition Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar. It’s made out of titanium, which means it’s very light for what it is. And the most fascinating thing is that it’s quite thin, and the movement is incredible in that it has so many manual functions.”

The Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar in titanium represents the intersection of Audemars Piguet’s design heritage with modern materials science. Titanium offers approximately 45% less weight than stainless steel while maintaining superior strength and corrosion resistance. For a complex watch like a perpetual calendar, this weight reduction significantly improves wearability without compromising durability.

“I went to a master class with AP, and I got to work on metal, and so I got to see how difficult it is. And so you have a completely new level of appreciation for that amazing product,” Brabec explains. This hands-on experience with titanium machining has given him insight into the technical challenges involved in creating such timepieces.

Understanding Perpetual Calendar Complexity

The perpetual calendar complication represents one of the most sophisticated achievements in mechanical watchmaking. Unlike simple calendar watches that require manual adjustment, a perpetual calendar automatically accounts for the varying lengths of months and leap years.

“This is a mechanical watch that is tracking day, month, year, calendar, week as well as leap year. So 1, 2, 3, 4, leap year, as well as moon phase and all in one housing and being automatic,” Brabec explains. “So it’s basically the Swiss Army knife on your wrist with this incredible design with this incredible technology that’s behind it.”

The mechanical complexity required to achieve this functionality is staggering. A typical perpetual calendar movement contains hundreds of components working in precise coordination to track multiple calendar functions simultaneously. The movement must “remember” which months have 30 or 31 days, account for February’s 28 days, and automatically adjust for leap years every four years.

“The craftsmanship of that product is absolutely insane and it does all of that mechanically, and that’s what’s so fascinating to me,” Brabec continues. “It’s one thing that you’re able to see something like that on your phone or wherever, but for the actual mechanical machine to be able to track all that and think how smart it is, the fact that it tracks leap years, 1, 2, 3, 4, and that’s why it’s called perpetual calendar, because as long as you keep winding it, it will run forever.”

The programming of leap year cycles into a mechanical movement requires extraordinary precision. The watch must track a four-year cycle and automatically adjust February from 28 to 29 days every fourth year. “It knows that this year is the year when February will have 29 days, and after 29 it jumps to number one of the next month, and it jumps to March one. And it does all of that every four years, because it knows that’s how the calendar works.”

This level of mechanical intelligence, achieved without any electronic components, represents centuries of horological development and refinement. The fact that Audemars Piguet can package this complexity into a relatively thin titanium case demonstrates the brand’s mastery of both traditional complications and modern manufacturing techniques.

Collecting Philosophy: Passion Over Profit

YD: What advice would you give to someone starting to collect Hublot watches?

FB: “Don’t try to make it an investment. Hublot is not necessarily a brand that fares super well in secondary market. So the way to buy, from a value standpoint, is used because if you can find a good used Hublot, you’re probably in pretty good shape, and your discount will be pretty sizable.”

Brabec’s approach to collecting emphasizes practical considerations over speculative investment. His strategy of purchasing pre-owned pieces allows him to acquire watches that would otherwise be financially out of reach while avoiding the steep depreciation that affects many luxury watches in their first years.

“The watch market is tricky, and I think a lot of people try to make it an investment, but I think that’s the wrong way to go,” he continues. “You should not make it about investment. You should make it about what you love.”

This philosophy extends beyond Hublot to his entire collecting approach. When discussing Audemars Piguet, he clarifies: “I would consider AP as an investment, yet I would not purchase an AP as an investment. I would purchase AP as something I love, and it also happens to be an investment. I would not be motivated by the investment unless I have to explain it to my partner.”

The Evolution of Taste

Brabec’s collecting journey illustrates how preferences develop and refine over time. “When you’re developing your collection, you’re developing esthetic and kind of a direction and opinion and what you like and what you want to have and what you aspire to have,” he explains.

This evolution involves both acquisition and divestment. “You acquire certain things, and you love them, and you kind of have them and then you realize over time that there are some pieces that you love and that will probably be with you forever, and there are some pieces that you bought and you like them, but you all of a sudden realize two years later that you really hardly wore them.”

The natural progression leads to portfolio refinement. “You kind of start feeling like, you know what, maybe I need to sell this watch, because this is maybe not speaking to me as much as I thought, and that’s how, for me, it’s a kind of evolution of taste, evolution of philosophy of how you piece your things together.”

Practical Collecting Strategies

Beyond emotional attachment, Brabec considers practical factors in building his collection. “For me, it’s also a fashion statement. So for me it’s also how it fits other things that I wear. So I also think about that, and I also think about similar style watches.”

His most important rule involves avoiding redundancy: “You should try not to have two similar style watches, because they’ll always fight, and you’ll tend to always prefer one. The other one will naturally always be sitting, and then it’ll be like that thing that you wore one Saturday. And you think, yeah, that’s kind of cool. But then nine out of 10 times you wear the other one.”

This insight reflects years of collecting experience and highlights the importance of considering how each piece fits within the broader collection rather than evaluating watches in isolation.

Defending the Polarizing Brand

YD: Hublot seems to generate strong reactions in the watch community. How do you respond to critics?

FB: “It’s to some degree a polarizing brand, because I think typically you either love Hublot or you hate Hublot. There aren’t very many people that are like, Hublot is in between, I’m okay with Hublot. You don’t get that often.”

The criticism often centers on Hublot’s departure from traditional watchmaking aesthetics and techniques. “There are haters who are saying, basically they’re not at all in line with the classical sort of watchmaking. But you know, Jean Claude would tell you that they’re not trying to be classic. They’re a young brand, and as a result, they want to be doing new things.”

This perspective highlights a fundamental divide in the watch collecting community between those who value heritage and tradition versus those who appreciate innovation and contemporary design. Brabec firmly places himself in the latter camp, viewing Hublot’s willingness to challenge conventions as a strength rather than a weakness.

The brand’s approach to materials exemplifies this philosophy. While traditional Swiss watchmaking relies heavily on precious metals and established techniques, Hublot has pioneered the use of ceramic, carbon fiber, and unconventional material combinations. This innovation requires different manufacturing processes and design approaches that may not align with classical watchmaking traditions but represent genuine technical advancement.

An Architecture of Assemblies

 

On arrival at the Grand Palais in Paris, the contrast is immediate. Beneath the glass canopy of the Salon d’Honneur, a sweeping, pink, textile structure cuts across the historic setting with the ease of something entirely new. This is Fun Palace — an architectural and curatorial experiment designed by Studio Ossidiana and staged by the Centre Pompidou during its five-year closure. Named after Cedric Price’s legendary unbuilt project, the interactive installation rethinks how we gather, how we share space, and how collective life can be shaped by design.

 

Jean-Max Colard, Head of Programming at the Centre Pompidou, frames the event in both spatial and political terms: ‘We have this idea to explore a new form of assembly. It’s the pleasure of gathering, but also how we speak, how we come together in a space.’ The ten-day program at the Grand Palais, he explains, becomes a living laboratory, where each day is imagined as a room in an evolving architecture of thought, action, and intimacy.

 

The decision to invoke Cedric Price was not incidental. The original Fun Palace, imagined in the 1960s, proposed an adaptable cultural complex shaped by users, not hierarchies. Though never built, its ideas remain foundational, particularly for institutions like the Centre Pompidou. ‘Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers studied Cedric Price,’ says Colard. ‘This is a way of relaunching that utopian project.’

soft palace: a textile landscape for collective life

 

Studio Ossidiana’s contribution for the Centre Pompidou installation, titled The Soft Palace, acts as both landscape and stage. It folds and spills across the floor of the Grand Palais like a garment, offering shelter, invitation, and unpredictability. Made of layered pink felt, the installation encourages barefoot wandering, reclining, and spontaneous use. Its informality is deliberate.

 

It became a sort of encampment,’ say Alessandra Covini and Giovanni Bellotti of Rotterdam-based, Italian practice Studio Ossidiana. ‘The temporary home of the Centre Pompidou while it’s being renovated. Because of time and labor constraints, all the elements are made of rolls. These can extend to accommodate changing programs.’ Visitors drift between talks and performances, often lingering in the folds of the structure itself, part of its spatial choreography.

 

The soft materiality is central. ‘We imagined a place where you could play, listen, discuss, or find a moment of privacy a few steps from a crowd,’ the studio adds. ‘We hope every visitor becomes both actor and spectator in the choreography of its daily life.’

virtually explore the grand palais with ‘nightcrawlers’ game

 

Elsewhere in the Grand Palais, another form of architecture unfolds — this time virtual. Nightcrawlers, a video game by artist Alice Bucknell, maps the building through the sensory logics of bats and flowers. ‘It’s a pollination simulator,’ Bucknell explains. ‘You’re either the bat or the flower, navigating underground root networks or flying through the halls. You collect charms using echolocation or electric pulses. Each one makes a sound. You and your partner play them back to each other like a musical score.’

 

The game is multiplayer and cooperative by design. ‘You can’t play alone,’ Bucknell says. ‘It’s about becoming attuned to someone else, without words. Pollination becomes a kind of duet.’ As players succeed in these musical exchanges, the architecture changes. French formal gardens slowly give way to wild, overgrown ecologies. ‘The more you cooperate, the more the palace transforms.

Amid these interactive works is a more meditative zone: a small, focused presentation of design pieces from the Centre Pompidou’s collection, curated by Olivier Zeitoun. These recent acquisitions underscore design’s capacity to assemble both materials and people. ‘We called it The Assembly of Objects,’ Zeitoun notes. ‘Each project here is the result of a collective process, either in how it was made or what it represents.’

 

Among them is FormaFantasma’s Cambio, which interrogates the timber industry through material storytelling, Fernando Laposse’s Corn Kumiko Cabinet, and Mash.T Deign Studio‘s Hlabisa Bench, a tribute to Zulu craftsmanship. Also on view are works by ibiyanε, whose poetic forms draw on diasporic memory and shared experience. ‘These objects are sensitive to ecology, memory, and postcolonial narratives,’ says Zeitoun. ‘Design becomes a tool for connection, for transmission.’

 

While the project is inspired by Cedric Price’s Fun Palace, this version is more tactile, more embodied. You sit in it. You nap in it. You echolocate in it. You play. Its strength lies in what it offers without prescription, It is an open architecture shaped by those who use it. ‘Cities aren’t born in beautiful solitude,’ says Alessandra Covini. ‘They emerge from conflict, negotiation, the mess of being together.’

Need more room in your RTT, James Baroud Family Room adds that extra space for the road

Who doesn’t love a little extra living space in the wilderness? If you’ve ever found yourself wishing for additional room to comfortably accommodate your family of four (or more) during camping trips, the James Baroud Family Room is a welcome addition to your adventures. It creates that much-needed room you desire, connecting to your rooftop tent where you can see your kids playing, have the respite of accommodating additional guests, or a teenage kid who doesn’t want to share the bed in the RTT.

James Baroud Family Room, which made its first appearance at the recently concluded Overland Expo West, is designed by virtue of being a comfortable, additional space that connects to your existing camping setup and transforms into a family-friendly living area in a jiffy. Of course, when the utility is immense, the features have to add up. The Family Room is a feature-packed living area with four walls and even a floor, not just a temporary awning!

What really makes this tent contraption distinct from anything that we have seen before in the market is its convenience of approach: You can directly access it from a rooftop tent through a tunnel (a covered pass-through from inside to the tent). Even though James Baroud has not limited the usage and compatibility, the Family Room is ideally well-suited with James Baroud’s own rooftop tents, for many obvious reasons. To make things more interesting and appropriate, the 95 lbs Family Room’s walls and flooring can zip off for cleaning and storage. A zippered opening in the rear of the room is another access to your vehicle parked alongside, without having to step outside in the open.

It is very effortless to set up and dismount (each process takes only 4 minutes), is made from high-quality scratch-resistant fabric and is purpose-built for traveling with kids and pets. So, as the company puts it, “every detail of the Family Room was designed with families in mind,” and it’s evident from the fact that the space is very spacious, measures 118 inches wide, 87 inches long, and 79 inches high, and can accommodate your gear with people inside.

Fascinatingly, the lightweight design of the Family Room doesn’t take up any storage space inside the camper, when it’s dismounted and ready for travel. It folds down into a compact awning-like form factor and can seamlessly attach to the roof rack. While you may be ready to spend what it takes to get this additional room for your camping setup now; the James Baroud Family Room will officially be available starting mid-July only. When it does, it is likely to retail for about $1,600, which isn’t a bad deal at all!

World’s tiniest violin is smaller than a strand of human hair

In a remarkable feat of engineering at the nanoscale, physicists at Loughborough University have crafted what they believe to be the world’s smallest violin. You would think that this is just some random fun thing that they’re doing because they can. But while it is indeed fun and creative, there’s a bigger, purpose, so to speak. This miniature marvel, barely wider than a human hair, was created using cutting-edge nanolithography technology, opening doors for advancements in various scientific fields.

The minuscule musical instrument measures a mere 35 microns in length and 13 microns in width. To put that into perspective, a micron is one-millionth of a meter. This makes the violin so tiny that it could comfortably sit within the width of a single strand of human hair, which typically ranges from 15 to 120 microns. Crafted from platinum, the ‘violin’ is more of a microscopic image etched onto a small chip rather than a playable instrument.

The creation of this incredibly small structure was made possible through the use of a sophisticated nanotechnology system at Loughborough University, featuring a state-of-the-art nano-sculpting machine called a NanoFrazor. This groundbreaking instrument from Heidelberg Instruments employs a technique called Thermal Scanning Probe Lithography (t-SPL).

At its core, the NanoFrazor utilizes an ultra-sharp, heatable probe with a tip radius of less than 5 nanometers to directly write intricate nanostructures onto a substrate coated with a thermally sensitive resist material. This process allows for incredibly high precision, achieving lateral resolutions as fine as 15 nanometers and vertical resolutions down to 2 nanometers. This makes it a versatile tool for advanced research across diverse applications, including the fabrication of quantum devices, nanoscale electronics, nanophotonic structures, and even biomimetic substrates for cell growth. This combination of precision, in-situ monitoring, and versatility makes the NanoFrazor a powerful instrument for pushing the boundaries of nanoscale engineering.

While the Loughborough University team acknowledges that their tiny violin isn’t capable of producing any melodies, its creation serves a significant purpose. This project acts as a testbed for the university’s new nanolithography system, allowing researchers to explore its capabilities in building and analyzing structures at the nanoscale. Experiments like this pave the way for potential new technologies and developments in areas such as advanced computing and innovative methods for harvesting energy.

This incredible achievement highlights the power of nanotechnology and the ingenuity of researchers pushing the boundaries of what’s possible at the smallest scales. While we might not be hearing any tiny tunes from this violin anytime soon, its existence represents a significant step forward in the world of nanoscale engineering and its potential applications for the future.
