There are, however, endless objects scattered throughout our urban lives that rarely get a second thought. Most of these items are destined for the landfill: old tires, plastic crates, or those ubiquitous cement blocks that prop up construction sites. These objects are typically ignored in furniture design, dismissed as too rough or simply unrelated to interior decor. But what if these disregarded materials could be given a totally new role?

These limitations are part of the story, reminding us that reusing the unexpected is often a creative experiment rather than a universal solution.

I learned to play the guitar on my own and I was practicing all the pop-rock songs that I wanted to sing in case I can audition for some band or some contest. Jeu de Cintre is a decorative toy collection that transforms a single wooden hanger into playful, minimalist objects. The project is the latest from aequo.design, a studio known for merging industrial design with craft to reframe overlooked or standardized materials. Founded in 2020 by designers Tim Defleur and Arthur Lenglin, aequo.design draws inspiration from construction, everyday life, and local contexts, often working with what’s readily available to create objects that are both functional and poetic.

 

In Jeu de Cintre, this philosophy takes shape through the Spacéo hanger — a mass-produced, utilitarian object reimagined with just a few simple tools. By focusing on small gestures and subtle transformations, the project highlights the creative potential embedded in even the most ordinary materials, fashioning joyful sculptures of birds, dinosaurs, planes, and much more.

Each toy in the Jeu de Cintre series is crafted from just one hanger, with a manufacturing process intentionally simplified down to essentials to suit all ages and skill levels. This approach makes the project ideal for public workshops and also informs aequo.design’s pared-back aesthetic and the team’s commitment to inclusive, hands-on design.

 

The project will be presented at the Leroy Merlin booth during Maker Faire 2025, held from June 13th to 15th at Euratechnologie in Lille, France, where visitors will be invited to build their own objects using assembly instructions and guided support from on-site facilitators. Each design is made from a Spacéo hanger, an off-the-shelf wooden clothes hanger sold by Leroy Merlin as part of its home storage range, highlighting the studio’s interest in reimagining standardized, everyday materials.

Open Source One-Handed Keyboard Blends QWERTY and Mouse for True Accessibility

It’s not every day you come across a computer accessory that feels genuinely life-changing, but that’s exactly the impression left by HTX Studio’s One-handed Keyboard. For designers, engineers, or even tinkerers who’ve spent hours wrestling with conventional keyboards, the usual arrangement quickly reveals its limitations, especially if you’re trying to operate everything with just one hand. Now, picture the added challenge for people who, because of disability or injury, don’t have the luxury of using both hands.

Determined to restore her digital independence, the designers set out to create a device that didn’t just offer half-measures. Rather than settling for a stripped-down keypad, they built a compact but complete 61-key QWERTY layout, ensuring all the day-to-day essentials are within reach. The creative layout arranges the keys in a fan-shaped arc, so your hand never has to dance awkwardly side to side.

One of the most exciting twists is the addition of a trackball, embedded directly into the keyboard. Instead of reaching for a separate mouse, users can simply roll the ball with their thumb and tap mouse buttons lined up just above, all without shifting position. The mouse wheel is also built in, making scrolling just as easy. This hybrid design means you can write, browse, and click with one hand, and the learning curve is refreshingly gentle.

Thoughtful details make the design especially delightful for makers and accessory designers. CH+K reveals construction updates of its multipurpose arena in jihlava, czech republic

A Stadium that Stays in the City

 

There is a clarity to CHYBIK + KRISTOF‘s decision to build the Jihlava Multipurpose Arena in the center of the city. It defies the pull toward peripheral land, choosing instead to deepen the relationship between civic life and sports infrastructure. As construction advances, the team’s vision for a permanent, public presence in the urban core becomes increasingly legible. The placement of the arena ensures it becomes part of the rhythm of daily life. It is walkable, visible, and open to passersby.

 

Jihlava, a regional capital with a population of around 50,000, is betting on architecture as a driver of both cultural exchange and economic growth. The new arena is designed to serve more than HC Dukla’s storied ice hockey legacy. With a capacity of 5,650, the venue is equally prepared to host concerts, exhibitions, and festivals. Its shape and program are defined by this range of activity, embedded with the expectation of constant adaptation.

CHYBIK + KRISTOF brings new construction to jihlava

 

Four buildings make up the Jihlava Multipurpose Arena, as two are preserved, while two are newly completed by CHYBIK + KRISTOF. The arena is joined by a mixed-use volume that folds together accommodation, a gym, a pub, and rooftop running track. The architects anchor this companion building in the corner of the site, extending the program well beyond the confines of sport and turning the ensemble into a civic cluster.

 

Open spaces draw a line between built forms. A stepped plaza, cut diagonally through the plan, becomes a generous threshold between the arena and the nearby university. It operates as a social surface, hosting informal gatherings and supporting programmed events. This attention to urban texture, how people move, linger, and return, is evident throughout the project.

There is no mistaking the Jihlava Multipurpose Arena from a distance, as CHYBIK + KRISTOF curate its color and form with intent. Pigmented red concrete tribunes circle the stadium’s core, giving it a graphic edge that helps orient visitors from almost any angle. These pre-cast curves echo the movements of the sport inside, while also nodding to architectural languages found across the Vysočina region.

 

Above, the roofline extends with a sculptural sharpness, creating a silhouette that crowns the project. It is less a cap than a signal. The geometry reads as deliberate and crisp, elevating the arena to landmark status without overpowering the city’s scale.

The process behind the design has been just as layered as the program it contains. CHYBIK + KRISTOF have made collaboration a central part of the work. Seating has been developed alongside mmcité, while Czech lighting studio BOMMA has created integrated installations that sit flush within the brickwork of circulation spaces. These interventions do more than illuminate. They echo the industrial heritage of the region and create tactile points of engagement for visitors.

 

Landscape architect Zdeněk Sendler, a long-time collaborator of the studio, has been tasked with the adjoining park’s renewal. The green space is being carefully restored, reconnecting it with the new public zones and enhancing the site’s permeability.

Public investment, led by the City of Jihlava with support from Vysočina and the state, underscores the regional ambition behind the arena. For city councillor David Beke, the building is both a response to the area’s proud hockey tradition and a foundational piece of infrastructure for what lies ahead. ‘It becomes a modern regional colosseum,’ he said, ‘elevating the importance and development of both the city and the region.’

 

From the designers’ perspective, scale demands responsibility. ‘Architecture is a tool for the creative reuse of our cities,’ says Ondřej Chybik. ‘We are creating a space that fosters engagement and long-term resilience.’ The arena is intended to move fluidly between uses, inviting both everyday interaction and extraordinary experience.

Design Director Jiří Richter sees the transparency of the building — both literal and conceptual — as a mechanism for integration. A long strip of glass at pedestrian level opens the interior to its surroundings, allowing glimpses into practices and events. ‘The façade connects the arena with the park and the university,’ he notes. ‘The city has decided to restore the park itself, and we are happy this area will be returned to the people.’

Nestled in Warsaw’s Solec neighborhood, Pastelowe is a petite pâtisserie that channels the surfy spirit of the Portuguese coast into just 63 square meters of vibrant interior, designed by architecture studio Znamy się. The bakery is dedicated to the famed pastéis de nata, eggy custard tarts with a cult following, and captures their sunny origins through form, texture, and hue. With its yellow foam ceiling, sculptural counters, and marine-toned accents, Pastelowe is a sensory escape to the Atlantic shores of Portugal.

At the heart of the concept is the surf. Polish studio Znamy się draws on the anatomy of ocean waves, beach break, point break, and reef break, which the founders encountered on holiday and brought back to Warsaw in both pastry and design. Curved benches and softly rounded mirrors evoke the forgiving nature of beach-break waves; wall shelves march in steady rhythm like the ordered swell of a point-break; and the counter, a dramatic undulating form, channels the bold energy of reef-break surf. 

 

Warm oak plywood hints at sun-baked sand, while metallic finishes shimmer like wet rocks and rolling water. The ceiling — coated entirely in yellow spray foam — steals the show, its tactile irregularity and golden hue suggesting seafoam and morning sun. Branded in deep marine blue, the space ripples with contrast, echoing the freshness of the pastries themselves, which gleam behind the tunnel-like counter. While compact in area, Pastelowe stretches its atmosphere far beyond the walls — giving Warsaw locals a slice of Portuguese surf culture, no wetsuit required.

As we continue to grapple with digital distractions and noisy productivity hacks, Nyckle Sijtsma’s ZONE is a small gadget serving as a physical, calming tool to reclaim your attention. The iF 2025 award-winning focus timer strips time management down to its most essential form: a small handheld cube that helps you focus with more intention. The object is wrapped in soft molded silicone, with four rounded edges that represent four customizable time blocks of 5, 10, 25, and 60 minutes. A simple turn activates each preset; a tactile cue to begin a focused session or take a restorative break.

 

The minimalist design eliminates unnecessary data like seconds or milliseconds, replacing stress-inducing countdowns with a subtle LED display and a gentle vibraphone chime. The internal tech, integrating custom PCB, 600-nit screen and 1000 mAh rechargeable battery, supports reliable, daily use, while the form remains calming and intuitive.

The idea for ZONE began in late 2023, as Nyckle Sijtsma sought to design a focus tool that felt more authentically like an object for living than a tech gadget. Through months of sketching, prototyping, and testing, the Dutch designer’s concept evolved into a functional problem-solving and emotionally resonant object. Rounded cutouts subtly mark the timer’s four sides, guiding the hand without the need for screens or buttons. The molded silicone surface is also comforting to touch, while remaining durable, inviting consistent use throughout the workday.

 

Beyond this, ZONE extends into a fuller productivity system through the optional Focus Bundle, which includes four glass whiteboards tucked into a bamboo base. These reusable boards allow users to plan daily tasks, brainstorm ideas, or sketch during breaks, essentially turning ZONE into a modular, analog-digital hybrid workspace. It is available in three colorways — Midnight Focus, Daylight Clarity, and Blue Flow — and each version speaks to a distinct working mood. ZONE is available on Kickstarter.

Tiny Blade, MASSIVE Bite: The BITZ Pocket Knife Flaunts Titanium Body + Tungsten Blade

Is it the world’s smallest knife? Probably, probably not. But for its size, it’s certainly the world’s toughest knife, boasting a machined titanium body that houses an ultra-durable tungsten blade.

I get that knives come under the broad umbrella of EDC, but personally, a knife feels like something I’d carry with purpose. Not carry every day. It’s not EDC, it’s just C, you know what I mean? A knife occupies significant emotional space when you carry it. It personally makes me hyper-conscious when I have it on myself. When it’s concealed, I wonder whether I really need to carry it. When it isn’t, I wonder what people who see it think of me. I love knives, I’ve written about them for a decade, but the current pocket knife format doesn’t excite me. However, when I saw the BITZ, I immediately felt something.

The BITZ knife isn’t like the average flipper. It’s a lot more discreet, in ways that makes people like me feel more comfortable to carry a blade around. I don’t find myself in tactical situations, I barely venture outdoors – do I really need a 3-inch blade? Not quite. Something tiny yet powerful is more than enough for my Amazon-package-opening needs, which is why the BITZ feels just… perfect.

The BITZ gets its name from its drill-bit-sized design. It’s tiny (think pencil-stub), but mighty. Measuring just 1.8 inches (48mm) in length, the BITZ is tiny enough to fit on your keychain, a carabiner, or even around your neck. And that’s what sets it apart from the flurry of pocket knives we see online. When closed, it becomes jewelry, rather than just a ‘folded knife’.

The jewelry aspect overcomes a pretty significant social hurdle. The BITZ is a knife only when you need it to be one. The rest of the time, it’s a style statement. The knife’s body comes machined from solid metal. Maker YSMART LONDON offers the BITZ in two variants – one made from Brass, and another from Grade-5 Titanium. Both variants have their own visual appeal – the brass one shines with a golden allure, while the titanium one has a classic silver finish, while also holding the distinction of being the strongest metal known to mankind. Both versions come with laser-etched graphics that elevate them from mere slabs of metal to haute jewelry, albeit with a secret.

Pull the BITZ’s two halves apart, and you’re greeted with a tiny but ruthlessly tough tungsten alloy blade. The alloy rates at a staggering 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, outperforming steel, which sits at just 4.5. This allows the BITZ to have the attitude of a knife 10 times its size. The tiny blade can cut through most materials without breaking a sweat. Want to slit wires? Go ahead. Want to pierce hardwood? The BITZ can do it with relative ease. The wharncliffe (sheepsfoot) style blade is tiny but fairly competent. Don’t expect the BITZ to be your tactical sidekick, but if you want to do anything as simple as opening an envelope or as complex as shatter protective glass, the BITZ has you sorted.

Once you’re done cutting, slicing, shearing, carving, or whittling, the BITZ’s cap (or sheath) slides back on, snapping satisfyingly to the knife to close it shut. A powerful set of neodymium connectors hold the two elements together, keeping them securely shut at all times until you need to access the blade. While most pocket knives rely on springs, bearings, and locks, this one puts its faith in strong magnets that get the job done fairly well. You’ll never find your BITZ accidentally disengaging just because of how reliable the magnets are.

This is the part where I tell you whether the knife is for you, and to be honest, I’ve never come across a knife that’s made me feel more ‘seen’ or ‘heard’. I really appreciate the BITZ’s discreet design, allowing it to double as jewelry so you can carry it around with you without that feeling of self-consciousness. It’s tiny, so it really does integrate into your EDC flawlessly. You could legitimately put it around your keychain and forget about it (although remember to take it off before checking into a flight), although the etched designs really lend themselves wonderfully to being worn around the neck like a pendant that also doubles as protection!
