I Predict The Nothing ‘Glyph Matrix’ will eventually become bigger + spawn an App Store

It took 8 phone models (across the Nothing and CMF brands) to get to the Phone (3), and now I can finally say with confidence that Nothing is genuinely building a phone that feels ‘fun’. No, I didn’t think the Glyph Interface was a gimmick (although the one on the Phone (2) didn’t feel substantially better than the predecessor), but I definitely knew it wasn’t Nothing’s magnum opus. To me, it was just a placeholder for something better… and the Glyph Matrix on the Phone (3) feels like we’re finally getting there.

Carl Pei debuted the Nothing Phone (3) today, and while most blogs will talk about the phone itself, or the new Glyph Matrix while mourning the death of the Glyph Interface, I’m here making a bold prediction. I’m putting my money on two things – Firstly, the Glyph Matrix WILL eventually become a bigger element on later phones. And secondly, the pixelated dot-matrix display’s unique appeal will spawn a ‘marketplace’ or a community of its own, sort of like how Apple birthed the very idea of a smartphone ‘app store’.

What I Love – The Glyph 2.0, The Physical Button, The Recording Light

The Glyph Matrix (I believe I was probably the first to use that term exactly a month ago) really feels like the Glyph Interface matured and grew character. It feels more sentient, capable of communicating, and has much more depth than those seemingly arbitrary blinking lights that either danced to music/tunes or presented a rudimentary timer of sorts. The Matrix is literally another dimension, from a single 1-dimensional row of lights, you’ve now got a 2D grid, capable of actually displaying information. Why is that important? Because it supports Nothing’s philosophy of ‘fun’.

ASUS did it with the ROG Phone, and Nothing’s doing it with their Phone (3) too. The idea is to make the back more appealing than the front (at least in a way that feels more unique and fun). The Glyph Matrix does that. It really does feel like a show-stealer, like the free toy with a box of cereal – arguably secondary in product priority but more in emotional priority. I don’t spend minutes staring at the back of my iPhone, there’s nothing to be gained from it – but the Nothing Phone (3) actually compels you to interact with the back panel. It’s a distraction from the distraction that is your phone’s primary screen and all the app notifications. To me, that’s a major win.

What really clinches it for the Phone (3) is that the Matrix doesn’t make you a spectator. It has a dedicated button that lets you interact with it, something that adds meaning and value. It isn’t an ambient display anymore – it’s something with ‘user control’, something that you’ll actually grow fond of.

This pairs with that red square in the middle of the camera setup. On previous versions, it merely sat there as an opaque block, punctuating the visual monotony with a small speck of color. Now, finally, the red square gets purpose, as it glows when you’re recording video. Is it a major jump in design or tech capabilities? No. Is it meaningful? Yes. And that’s what I love.

What I Don’t Love – The Off-Set Camera Layout, Wireless Charging Confusion, The Price

I won’t dwell on it much, but anyone plagued by the lack of symmetry will look at that camera layout and grimace in pain. The periscope lens sits significantly off-center compared to the other lenses – something that’s exacerbated by the fact that the Nothing team actually mentioned that the phone’s elements on the back actually follow a grid, with parts lining up if you place older and newer models side by side. It’s an issue I raised with the Phone 3a Pro too, but then again, the alignment factor is more subjective than an objective reality.

What really did surprise, however, was that the complete redesign also ditched the wireless charging coil on the outside – a crucial visual element that pretty much gave you a visual overview of where to place your wireless charger, while also being a graphical distinction between the flagship and A-series phone. Now, the Phone (3) ditches that coil design completely. Yes, there still IS wireless charging, but it’s more of a guessing game now. It makes no sense.

Pair that with the Phone (3)’s starting $799 price, and it does feel odd. Is the Phone (3) a true flagship? Only time (and reviews) will tell, but the brand built itself on accessibility and community. To now go to the same community and ask them to shell out the exact same amount of money as an iPhone 16 feels, well, insulting. The only consolation is that now you also have a cheaper A-series and a CMF Phone 2 to choose from. Maybe that’s why Nothing left the Phone (3) announcement for later, just so that the audience still has a phone that’s ‘achievable’.

What I Predict – The Glyph ‘Marketplace’, A Future Nothing Tablet

Onto the predictions – and I have three broad ones. Firstly, and I stake the least amount of my reputation on this, but Nothing will probably drop the prices on the Phone (3) if it doesn’t sell too well. This is the first time the company is selling in the US, and entering a new market with such a high price feels almost prohibitive. Besides, this rejects Nothing’s biggest market – India, with a price that is higher than the average amount the regular Indian pays for a phone. Secondly (and I’m giving these predictions more credence), the Glyph Matrix is here to stay. It will only grow bigger in size and in adoption. It currently has a 25mm x 25mm footprint, but just like foldable phones had tiny secondary screens that only grew bigger as time went by, the Glyph Matrix will grow bigger. In size, for sure, since it’s only as valuable as the information it displays, and the need to display more/better information will drive up the size of this tiny display.

Nothing is also releasing the Glyph Matrix’s SDK for developers to make their own ‘toys’ (interesting that they didn’t call it a widget). There’s really no reason why this won’t grow with time, as more and more developers flock to create custom interactions and tools for this new display. The Phone (3) ships with a few toys to begin with, the more fun ones being a compass, a solar clock, a spin-the-bottle game, a game of rock-paper-scissors, and a camera mirror (beyond the usual battery indicator, timer, clock). It’s only a matter of time before the Glyph Matrix has a veritable marketplace of toys to choose from, both from indie developers as well as probably brands (I’m thinking a Google Maps toy, a Pokémon Go toy, etc.) It can, and WILL happen.

The third and final prediction is a bit of a long shot, but this feels like a stepping stone for a Nothing tablet. I have no evidence to back this information up, but I predicted the Glyph Interface’s spiritual successor last year (with the ticker tape on the hinge of the Nothing Fold (1) concept). Let’s just say, it seemed a little obvious that a row of LEDs would eventually become a grid of LEDs that displayed actual information. If the Glyph Interface could evolve, why not the phone itself? Carl Pei hasn’t ruled out the idea of a Nothing Laptop, but it seems much more achievable for the company to build a tablet first, extending both its hardware as well as the NothingOS software (rather than building a laptop-friendly OS). Will I be right? Only time can tell – but for now, here’s what I’m putting my money on. All or Nothing!

The team behind the Ichiban electric motorcycle has recently unveiled the first prototype of the two-wheeler, complete with the Godzilla mode. As Ivan Zhurba, the founder of Ichiban Motorcycles, shares with us, the pilot prototype has limited functionality because the team is working on the engineering part at the present time.

 

We are making a lot of effort to deliver the full specs and price range to our clients,’ he adds. So far, the Ichiban electric motorcycle prototype was revealed on the weekend of June 28th and 29th at Reload Land, a major event for electric bikes in Berlin, Germany. This is the first time that the public has seen the real-life model of the two-wheeler.

The team behind the Ichiban electric motorcycle prototype has designed the vehicle using a Japanese idea called Kanso, which means simplicity or removing clutter. With this in mind, the exterior looks clean and minimal, visually strengthened by the softened pointed tips and rounded edges. At the present time, the specs include having a dual motor system that gives it 45 kW of power. The vehicle can go from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in only 3.5 seconds, and it also has a boost feature called Godzilla Mode. When the rider activates this on the handlebar, the motorbike gets a burst of extra power, making the ride faster.

 

The Ichiban electric motorcycle prototype is the first model. Since its introduction in February 2025, the team has received over 2,000 interested buyers who have already placed their pre-orders, and at Reload Land in Berlin, Germany, they accepted an additional 100 more pre-orders. The team adds that many of the buyers are first-time motorcycle riders, and at the moment, the team continues working on building the final, production version of the Ichiban electric motorcycle based on the unveiled prototype. So far, there’s no news yet on when the design team can reveal the final production-ready model of the two-wheeler inspired by Shotaro Kaneda’s bike in the anime Akira.

Wuyang-Honda E VO is a neo-retro electric café racer for urban riders

Honda has hinted at all-electric motorcycle concepts in the past, but it has rarely gone all-in for two-wheeled electrification with a production version. That seems to have changed with the Wuyang-Honda WH8000D bike developed in collaboration with a Chinese joint venture, Guangzhou Motorcycle Group.

Before the E‑VO, Honda’s focus was on practical scooters and underbone motorcycles that had limited appeal. Their new electric café racer marks a radical shift from their usual offerings. Launched at Beijing’s Shougang Park in late May 2025, this full-size electric motorcycle is the first of its kind from the Honda–Guangzhou partnership, although they have created vehicles in the past.

At first glance, the E‑VO impresses with its neo-retro flair. A sculpted half-fairing and round LED headlight evoke the style of vintage café racers, while bar-end mirrors, inverted front forks, dual discs with ABS, and adjustable levers reflect its modern, sporty intent. It’s offered in two refined schemes: black with red trim or off‑white with orange accents and a tan saddle. Power comes from an 8 kW (11 hp) hub motor, peaking at around 15–15.8 kW (20–21.5 hp), having acceleration and top speed comparable to 150–250 cc petrol bikes, the EV delivers 0 to 50 km/h in about 2.8 seconds and a top speed touching 120 km/h.

Battery options include a dual 4.1 kWh pack with a range of approximately 120 km, or a tri 6.2 kWh pack having a range of around 170 km. Domestic charging from a standard socket takes 90 minutes for the smaller pack and about 150 minutes for the larger pack. That said, the lack of DC fast charging draws criticism, as do the modest ranges and mid-tier charging speeds compared to some competitors. Weighing approximately 315 lb for the small battery and 344 lb for the larger, the bike rides on 16‑inch front and 14‑inch rear wheels with inverted forks and a rear monoshock.

Modern features include a 7‑inch TFT screen that displays speed, battery level, tire pressure, navigation, music controls, and other vital HUD elements. It supports smartphone and DJI camera connections. The standard model includes a front-facing dash cam. The higher trims offer additional rear and foot-mounted cameras. Safety and convenience are boosted by cruise control, traction control, hill-start assist, three ride modes (Eco, Normal, Sport), a boost button for extra torque, and keyless ignition.

Priced aggressively at around US$4,500 for the 4.1 kWh version and US$5,100 for the 6.2 kWh version, the E‑VO offers strong value in its home market. Still, skeptics argue that ICE bikes at similar prices may prove more practical for many, while higher-end electric models deliver better range and performance. Although it carries Honda branding, the E‑VO is a regional model tailored specifically for China and does not appear on Honda’s global electric roadmap, at least not yet. Yet, given Honda’s declared global goal of 10 electric motorcycle models by 2025 and 15 percent of bike sales electric by 2030, the E‑VO represents a strategic testbed alongside broader expansion plans.

A Smart Design for a Robotic Tennis Partner

Here’s an example of solving a complex problem by synthesizing existing technologies in a novel way.

A Chinese inventor known only as Mr. Feng wanted to create a robot that could persistently return tennis volleys, allowing him to practice his sport without needing to line up a human partner. While humanoid robots have made sharp advances in China, none are up to the complicated task of playing tennis.

What Feng realized is that you don’t need a humanoid robot; you just need a robot that can simulate the inputs and outputs of a human partner. He subsequently created this Acemate Tennis Robot, a rolling box that can track struck balls using a pair of cameras, and reach them anywhere on the court thanks to mecanum wheels.

It catches the balls within its net, then fires a new ball back towards the player. By dialing in the timing of when it catches a ball and when it fires one, the effect is as if you’re playing with a human.

It’s an understatement to say backers went wild for the idea. The Acemate has been successfully Kickstarted with over $2.1 million in pledges at press time, with 4 days left to pledge.

With construction advancing toward its planned opening in 2025, fresh photographs by StudioSZ document the evolving presence of Snøhetta‘s Shanghai Grand Opera House in the city’s Expo Houtan neighborhood. Designed in collaboration with ECADI, the project introduces a monumental cultural landmark along the Huangpu River, where its spiraling roofline rises in a steady gesture above the waterfront.

 

The opera house takes shape as a broad, gently rotating form, expressed in layered terraces and sweeping contours that convey a sense of movement anchored in place. At ground level, the structure meets its surroundings through a generous plaza and landscaped edges, drawing visitors toward a continuous, climbable roof that functions as a civic promenade. This rooftop, which will be open throughout the year, establishes a public destination as much as an architectural feature, creating varied vantage points over the river and the city skyline.

The design by Snøhetta references the image of a traditional folding fan, a motif repeated across the project’s interiors and circulation spaces. The architects have described this gesture as evoking the dynamic energy of dance while underscoring a commitment to public ownership. Inside, the composition unfolds in a sequence of overlapping volumes, where lobbies and halls merge with interstitial gathering areas to promote fluid movement among audiences.

 

Three auditoriums of different capacities are positioned to accommodate a spectrum of performances, ranging from traditional Chinese opera to contemporary experimental productions. The main hall, configured for opera and symphonic work, is complemented by smaller venues for recitals and immersive shows. Warm finishes and measured lighting define the interior palette, supporting an atmosphere that balances clarity with intimacy.

Snøhetta’s scope encompasses architecture, landscape, interior, and graphic design, reinforcing coherence across scales throughout the Shanghai Grand Opera Hall. The building envelope combines smooth white surfaces with translucent panels that modulate daylight and reveal activity within. A network of terraces and roof pathways extends the public realm vertically, encouraging engagement beyond the primary performance spaces.

 

The project incorporates a range of supporting amenities. Libraries, rehearsal studios, restaurants, and small cinemas are distributed through the perimeter, broadening the building’s reach beyond evening performances. Each program element has been configured to share visual connections with the larger circulation system, maintaining the clarity of the fan-shaped plan.

 

The recent images by StudioSZ emphasize the Opera House’s advancing material finishes and landscape integration. Concrete and glass are layered with precision, and the rooftop paths already convey the spatial openness that will characterize the completed project.

When EDC Objects are Actually Designed by Industrial Designers

Most EDC stuff looks and feels like it was designed by an engineer or machinist. In contrast these objects by the James Brand, which was notably founded by an industrial designer (Ryan Coulter), were clearly created by folks with ID backgrounds.

The anodized aluminum Warrick as a bit-holding screwdriver. Its sleek shape was designed both to slide into a coin pocket and to provide leverage. And the included bits aren’t throwaway filler; those are Wiha bits.

The Mehlville is a two-compartment carabiner. They’re milled out of single blocks of aluminum or titanium and feature stainless steel fittings.

The Palmer is a simple, minimalist aluminum utility knife. There’s a hole for a lanyard and, like the Warrick, it will also fit into a coin pocket.

The Palmer’s elegantly-designed blade changing process is particularly brilliant, and features a patented mechanism. Here’s how it works:

I’m not much of an EDC guy, but all of these caught my eye. You can really tell when an industrial designer or team has spent a lot of time sweating every radii, chamfer and transition. And while it might seem like a small detail, the UX of the blade changes on the Palmer reminds me of the good that can come when industrial designers give a damn.

The entire structure of the Roundish Bed, from the frame, base, and backrest, and to the headboard, features an enveloping softness thanks to multi-layered foam, plush filling, and a gentle bouclé-style textile that’s as comforting as it is stylish. Notably, the design places a high priority on safety: there are no sharp corners, and every angle is gently radiused and rounded, making this structure especially suitable for families with small children who are always on the move. This means parents can allow their kids to jump, climb, and play with extra peace of mind.

Recognizing the universal appeal of the original Roundish Bed, Donna has expanded the collection to include a dedicated Roundish Kids Beds line. These beds are built on the same principles as the original, which are softness, strength, and fun, but are scaled to fit smaller dreamers perfectly. The kids’ version is not only a bed, but can also easily transform into a personal playground or a cozy reading nook, thanks to its sturdy, climbable arch frame. Children naturally gravitate to its gentle shapes, using it as a shelter for their imaginative games or a “fort” for storytime snuggles.
