Located in San Miniato, Tuscany, Casa Sotto La Nuvola is a residential project by LDA.iMdA Architects, shaped by a process of reconstructive renovation. The site sits within a landscape of olive-covered hills near the historic Via Francigena, with the design responding to both topography and cultural context.

 

The project consists of two separate yet connected volumes: the main house and a smaller guesthouse. This spatial arrangement was developed to ensure privacy between the two functions, with an axial loggia serving as the connecting element. The building’s floor plan follows a deliberately simple and traditional form, retaining the archetypal rural house geometry of a rectangle topped with a gabled roof. While the exterior references local architectural typologies, the interior layout adopts a more contemporary approach. Bedrooms are positioned at ground level, and the living areas are placed on the lower basement floor. This inversion of traditional residential planning draws on spatial strategies seen in certain examples of modernist architecture.

The volumetric composition employs stereometric forms, reinterpreting the profile of the preexisting structure while remaining sensitive to the rural context. Outdoor spaces are designed to provide both visual and functional continuity with the landscape, and careful consideration was given to preserving the existing native vegetation.

A key feature of the design is the valley-facing elevation, where an optical channel is framed by a projecting overhang. This architectural element creates a covered outdoor space in front of the living area, while visually lightening the building’s mass and enhancing its integration into the landscape. Two conjoined homes quietly anchor their plot in Söcking, near Lake Starnberg, standing as an inventive response to suburban densification. Houses with One Pillar, designed by Buero Wagner, presents a contemporary take on multigenerational living while honoring the site’s modest past—a single 1950s house once occupied the lot. Now, without expanding the original footprint, two nearly identical gabled volumes rise from a lush context, their forms wrapped in black charred timber that hints at both tradition and innovation.

A closer look reveals the project’s underlying logic. The homes are joined by central garages, and each is structured around the concept of a single supporting pillar—a move that allows for remarkably open interiors. The monolithic floors, exposed concrete walls, and cantilevered steel stair treads create a tactile dialogue between solidity and lightness. Large, circular cut-outs in the façade frame treetop views, their drama offset by narrow vertical windows that maintain privacy while gently filtering daylight throughout the living spaces.

Following his groundbreaking Bosco Verticale in Milan and the social housing version in Eindhoven, Stefano Boeri Architetti‘s Wonderwoods Vertical Forest blossoms in Utrecht (find designboom’s previous coverage here), the tallest of its kind in the Netherlands. Rising 104 meters above the Beurskwartier district, the green tower is described by the studio as a ‘building/city’ and a complex ecosystem. The project continues Boeri’s decade-long pursuit of architecture that nurtures biodiversity, public life, and environmental responsibility.

 

Located near Utrecht’s central station, Wonderwoods is part of a two-tower development designed in collaboration with MVSA Architects. Stefano Boeri Architetti’s Vertical Forest tower is an evolving habitat made of 360 trees and 50,000 plants across its terraces and balconies. ‘Our Vertical Forest in Utrecht is a fundamental stage in the research we are carrying out all over the world,’ says Boeri. ‘The building hosts a combination of considerable vegetal biodiversity and a wide range of functions, including exhibitions, commercial, tertiary, and residential uses, as well as hospitality options. It will be a real building/city as well as a rich and complex ecosystem.’

Wonderwoods is a living tower that breathes

 

True to its name, Stefano Boeri’s Vertical Forest building actively supports non-human life. The Milan-, Shanghai- and Tirana-based architecture studio punctuates the facades with circular openings that are used as nesting spaces for native bird species. The selection of 30 local plant species changes the appearance of the facades over the course of the year. This living skin responds to light, temperature, and plant growth, making the tower an expressive participant in the urban environment rather than a static object.

 

Constructed using a novel prefabrication system for both balconies and facades, the tower marks a first for this typology. It rotates along its vertical axis in four superimposed ‘orders’, aligning with sunlight and views rather than the rigid street grid of Croeselaan. This gesture enables a physical connection at the seventh floor with the neighboring MVSA building, where a green pedestrian bridge hosts restaurants and panoramic views. Below, a water management system reclaims and filters rainwater for sustainable reuse.

The building’s ground floor and basement host public spaces and ample bicycle parking, while its upper levels combine offices, fitness areas, and a network of duplex apartments that double as residential ateliers. Designed as a fully pedestrian zone, the surrounding area integrates sustainable systems such as a subterranean reservoir that captures, reclaims, and manages rainwater. Following the Trudo Vertical Forest social housing project in Eindhoven, Wonderwoods becomes the first of Boeri’s green towers in the Netherlands to include public-facing amenities, advancing his vision for accessible, ecologically engaged architecture as part of the city’s everyday life.

 

Inside, more than apartments, many of them duplexes, are designed for diverse occupants, with generous outdoor spaces and smart greenery management systems that monitor irrigation and schedule pruning. The lower floors accommodate public amenities, including bicycle parking, fitness areas, and commercial spaces, reinforcing the building’s role as a vertical neighborhood.

 

The Wonderwoods Vertical Forest, in line with Stefano Boeri Architetti’s broader architectural vision, represents a new way of thinking about how cities and nature can coexist. By winning the MIPIM Award, the project has been recognized for its forward-thinking approach to sustainable urban living. A decade after Milan’s Bosco Verticale showed the world that greenery can be an integral part of high-rise architecture, Wonderwoods carries that idea forward.

Hot Wheels’ ‘Back to the Future’ and ‘Jaws’ sets celebrate the magic of big screen

The two iconic movies of all time – Back to the Future and Jaws – are celebrating their 40th and 50th anniversary this year. To make it a celebratory occasion, Hot Wheels wants to jump into the party and offer fans something they’ll love. Yes, you already know where we are going. Hot Wheels is going to have a collectible set for both these cult favorites, with first glimpses to be spotted at Comic Con in San Diego this month.

Nick Karamanos, senior vice president of Mattel Creations & Entertainment Partnerships, “These movies have left an indelible mark on pop culture. We worked closely with our creative teams to make sure every detail celebrates the spirit of these iconic moments.” He believes it’s priceless to make fans connect with the stories they grew up with. Interested fans can get their hands on these collectibles from July 34 onwards at Mattel’s Comic Con booth or MattelCreations website.

The Hot Wheels Back to the Future Time Machine set brings back memories of the iconic scenes from the first movie, released on 3 July 1985, where the Doc’s GMC Value Van (with true-to-life graphics) and the Time Machine are revealed. This set depicts the outer box for unfolding the ramp from the side so that the user can slide the 1:64 diorama from the side. This apparently is the first ever temporal displacement set, making it special in its own right.

Attention to detail is paramount here as the interior window packaging shows off the Twin Pines mall parking lot scene – scene-the same place where Doc’s science experiment turns into a time-traveling odyssey. The DeLorean gets the signature rear-mounted vents, gull-winged doors, flux capacitor and plutonium-fueled nuclear reactor to complete the intriguing details. Both the Time Machine and the DeLorean feature a die-cast construction and Real Riders wheels. This set with both vehicles will be priced at $32, which makes it a must-have for collectors.

The other limited edition set themed on the 1975 Jaws movie depicts the deadly shark chasing Captain Quint’s vulnerable Orca boat. Again, this is a 1:64 die-cast set that relives the nostalgic memories of the blockbuster movie when it rocked theaters back in the good old times. The boat has a weathered look, emulating the one featured in the movie, and a miniature version of the Chief Brody on the back, as he puts chum in the water. The scene is incomplete without the shark, so Mattel created a die-cast shark attacking the boat in all its raging fury.

This diorama recreates the scene in the water, where the elements can be taken out or placed in the desired place. The set is packaged in a period-correct color scheme and can be opened up by flipping the outer flaps. The Hot Wheels 50th Anniversary Jaws set will also be up for grabs for a price tag of $32. Collectors better get their hands on this one.

Three en-suite bedrooms, each fitted with custom furnishings developed by Aston Martin’s in-house team, serve as private sanctuaries. Every surface and junction feels considered, every detail honed to reinforce a sense of harmony and calm. Even the integrated Bowers & Wilkins audio system is seamlessly embedded, a subtle invitation to enjoy sound as part of the spatial experience.

The residence is more than a gallery of exquisite materials. It’s a space designed for living. The private spa invites relaxation—a retreat from Tokyo’s vibrant streets. A rooftop terrace offers rare open-air functionality, creating a green oasis above the city’s urban sprawl.
