This 3D-printed Watermelon Knife Block might be the quirkiest kitchen gadget I’ve seen this year

God bless 3D printers and all the creativity they’ve unleashed on this world. I can’t tell you how much of my Instagram feed is just these quirky, gorgeous products created by builders who can now rapidly prototype their ideas. Colby Geary comes to mind, with his creative endeavors garnering a cool million followers on Instagram. Another creator working his magic on IG is Gazzaladra, who uses a combination of design as well as 3D photogrammetric scanning to build nature-inspired devices like mushroom lampshades and the like.

This particular one isn’t the result of a 3D scan, but it captures Gazzaladra’s creativity perfectly, as he looks at objects around him for inspiration for everyday products. Designed to look like a thick slice of watermelon, this knife block holds as well as dries your knives in the coolest way possible. The slice comes with four slots to chuck thick knives as well as your honing rod in, but for smaller knives, they just mount magnetically on the side, thanks to tiny magnets hidden behind the watermelon’s seeds! It’s so poetic, I honestly want to see Gazzaladra turn this into a real series!

Most knife blocks are just wooden afterthoughts, designed with a bunch of slots that you chuck your knives into. Some of them, like the IKEA ones, have just a little more character, with their transparent outer shell and the reeds inside that let you drip-dry your knives post-wash. Gazzaladra’s knife block gives you that same ease-of-use, but in a design that’s filled with character and beauty. The watermelon is detailed, from the dual-color peel right down to the white rind and the red flesh, dotted with teardrop-shaped seeds.

The block’s four slots are for either chunky knives like the thick chef knife or your large bread knife, as well as for peelers, honing rods, etc. Gazzaladra fills the inside with stone chips that give the block weight, while also allowing the water to drip dry naturally without creating a puddle inside the block or on your countertop. This, obviously, gets added later, after printing.

The magic, however, is in the magnetic knife rack on the side. The print file comes with hidden slots to mount magnets into, as well as parts that conceal the magnets so you’re left with illusion and mystery. The rind holds a few magnets, as does the flesh. Smaller pieces (like the seeds) then go on top of the magnets, hiding them from plain sight. The result is magnetic adherence without any obviously visible magnets. The block holds up to 5 knives per side, although I’d probably just keep the one side magnetic so that the other side can show off the watermelon’s design without getting obscured by knives. Besides, anyone who has more than 10 knives in their kitchen might need to re-evaluate their life choices.

The beauty of this Watermelon Knife Block is that you can make it yourself instead of buying it. For as little as $9 a month, you can become a member of Gazzaladra’s Thangs3D page, where you get access to all his 3D printed designs. You can then print as many products as you want (and as many times as you want too). If your knife block gets damaged, just re-print the parts you need, and if your friends come over and rave about your gorgeous kitchen accessory, go ahead and print one for them too!

Minimalist Metal Seating Bends Design Norms with Seamless Elegance and Flatpack Ease

What if a single sheet of metal could become a chair, not through joints, screws, or adhesives, but simply through bending? Bieg, named after the German word for “bend,” takes that very idea and transforms it into a striking reality. As the designer’s first serious foray into furniture design, Bieg captures attention not just for its aesthetic minimalism, but for the clever structural logic behind its form.

At first glance, Bieg evokes the visual poetry of the iconic Eames Lounge Chair. Its flowing contours and organic curvature are nods to mid-century modern classics, yet Bieg brings that inspiration into the present with a distinctly industrial twist. Instead of molded wood or leather, the chair is formed from a single sheet of metal, strategically cut and bent to create a seamless silhouette.

WOW Architects has delivered Singapore’s most ambitious biophilic resort with the opening of Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree. The 11-acre property is the nation’s first to achieve Super Low Energy certification, while also creating an immersive forest experience. Marvel’s First Family is finally making its way back to our screens in what is hopefully a triumphant comeback with the Fantastic Four movie releasing on July 24. You can expect numerous brand collaborations for promotional materials and official merchandise in the coming days, so if you’re a fan of Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing, you’re in for a treat.

El Departamento Designs Siroko’s Barcelona Concept Store

 

Siroko, the Asturian sportswear and accessories brand, has opened its first concept store in Barcelona in collaboration with architecture and interior design studio El Departamento. Located at 113 Rambla de Catalunya, the 149-square-meter space explores the relationship between natural environments and sports technology through a series of spatial and material transitions. This is the second collaboration between Siroko and El Departamento, following the brand’s flagship store in Madrid. The Barcelona project continues the established design direction while introducing new conceptual and material strategies. The store is organized as a sequence of interconnected rooms, each treated as a discrete volume that accommodates a specific part of the retail program. These spaces are defined by their independent lighting schemes and distinct atmospheres, creating a spatial rhythm that supports the brand’s narrative.

 

El Departamento’s approach references elemental natural forms, such as ice, stone, earth, and vegetation, and translates them into a spatial language informed by sports technology. This creates a continuous dialogue between organic textures and synthetic materials. Meet the McLaren Short Tail: A race car small enough to parallel park

Ever wondered what would happen if McLaren made a car that could actually fit in your garage? UK designer Joshua Roberts did, and the result is this absurdly cool “McLaren Short Tail” concept that looks like it drove straight out of a sci-fi film. Roberts has captured McLaren’s thrill-seeking design language while shrinking it down to a package that wouldn’t require its own zip code. The glass bubble cockpit gives me serious jet fighter vibes, like McLaren raided Lockheed Martin’s parts bin when nobody was looking.

The first thing that hits you about this concept is that glass bubble cockpit. Roberts has basically created a street-legal spaceship where the driver sits dead center like the McLaren F1 of old, except now you’re essentially wearing the car rather than sitting in it. The visibility would be insane – like driving around in your own personal IMAX theater. I can already imagine the conversations: “Nice car, but does it come with sunscreen?” The whole single-seat approach is gloriously selfish too – this is a car that unapologetically says, “My commute is MY time,” and I’m here for that level of automotive introversion.

Roberts’ wheel treatment is absolutely bonkers in the best possible way. Those pods floating over the body like they’re held up by automotive black magic? Pure genius. The covered front wheels with their papaya orange accents look like they belong on a Le Mans prototype that’s been shrink-wrapped and given a shot of espresso. The aerodynamics at play here make current supercars look like they’re stuck in the Stone Age. The whole car looks like it’s moving at 200mph while parked, which is exactly what a McLaren should do.

The “Short Tail” name is a clever little wink to McLaren’s racing heritage that actual McLaren fans will appreciate. Where the original F1 GTR Shorttail (and later Longtail variants) were all about racing optimization, Roberts has flipped the script and applied that thinking to creating the ultimate compact street machine. The proportions are cartoonishly perfect – like someone took a 720S, compressed it to two-thirds its size, and then injected it with design steroids. The truncated rear end gives the car this bulldog-like stance that’s both aggressive and adorably stubby at the same time.

The signature headlight “eye sockets” are there, but they’ve evolved into these massive air intakes that look ready to inhale small birds. The side profile has that McLaren swoosh we all recognize, but it’s been condensed and exaggerated to create something that feels fresh yet familiar. It’s like meeting your friend’s cooler, more adventurous younger sibling – you can see the family resemblance, but this one clearly parties harder. The silver and white color scheme with those orange accents is straight from the McLaren playbook, but applied to such a radical shape that it feels entirely new.

The interior is minimalism taken to its logical extreme – just you, a yoke-style wheel, and whatever digital interfaces Roberts has imagined hiding in that cockpit. There’s something refreshingly honest about this approach. No pretending you’ll ever take passengers, no compromises for cupholders or gloveboxes or any of that practical nonsense. This is a car built around the singular purpose of making the driver feel like they’re piloting something special. In an age where cars keep getting bigger, heavier, and stuffed with more screens than a Best Buy showroom, there’s something rebellious about a concept that goes all-in on being small, driver-focused, and uncompromising.

Will McLaren ever build anything remotely like this? Probably not. The glass canopy alone would give safety engineers nightmares, and the marketing department would have a meltdown trying to sell a single-seater to wealthy customers who occasionally need to transport a trophy spouse. But that’s exactly why independent concepts like this matter. Roberts isn’t constrained by focus groups or crash regulations or manufacturing realities. He’s showing us what McLaren could be in a parallel universe where fun and fantasy trump practicality. And while we may never get to drive the Short Tail in reality, it’s designs like this that push established manufacturers to be braver with their own concepts. So here’s to Joshua Roberts and his pocket-sized McLaren fantasy – the car we didn’t know we wanted until now, and can’t stop thinking about after seeing it.

13-year-old builds 3D-printed beehive in his bedroom

While most teenagers spend their summer days immersed in video games or hanging out with friends, 13-year-old Oliver Taylor from Utah decided to embark on an extraordinary DIY project that would make even seasoned beekeepers take notice (and those afraid of bees, cower in fear). This remarkable young innovator has successfully designed and built a fully functional 3D-printed beehive that houses an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 bees right in his bedroom.

The ingenious setup consists of two hexagonal, modular units that connect directly to Oliver’s bedroom window through a ventilation tube system that resembles a compact air conditioning unit. This clever design allows the bees to freely access the outside world while keeping their honey-producing operations safely contained within his personal space. The modular nature of the hive means Oliver can theoretically continue expanding the structure by adding more hexagonal units, limited only by available wall space and perhaps his parents’ patience.

What makes this project particularly impressive is Oliver’s attention to practical problem-solving. After initial trials, he made crucial adjustments to prevent chaotic bee escapes and designed easily removable units for cleaning and maintenance. He also incorporated defenses against “robber” bees, invasive insects that attempt to steal honey from established colonies. These modifications demonstrate an understanding of complex ecological systems that extends far beyond his years. The journey to creating this buzzing bedroom ecosystem began when Oliver acquired a starter kit from a local bee farm, complete with a queen and approximately 12,000 bees. He designed a custom feeder system initially filled with sugar water to help the new inhabitants acclimate to their 3D-printed home. The colony thrived under his care, multiplying rapidly as bees conducted their daily ballet of coming and going through the window ventilation system.

Of course, managing tens of thousands of bees in a bedroom hasn’t been without its challenges. Oliver’s father once discovered around 100 bees buzzing freely in the room after opening the bedroom door, requiring a prompt vacuum cleanup. Ironically, Oliver’s mother is allergic to bees, yet she continues to support her son’s ambitious project by donning a full bee suit when helping out. Oliver himself doesn’t require protective gear, confidently stating that bees don’t randomly sting people.

The project has already yielded tangible results, with the bees successfully producing honey in their 3D-printed habitat. Oliver is now working on implementing a honey extraction system, which could potentially open opportunities for selling honey made by bees living in a completely custom-designed hive. Looking toward the future, he plans to add at least one more hexagonal unit to his growing operation and has even considered the possibility of eventually transforming his entire bedroom wall into one sprawling beehive complex.

This extraordinary project showcases how young innovators can combine modern technology with traditional practices to create something entirely new. Oliver’s 3D-printed beehive represents more than just a fascinating bedroom addition; it demonstrates the incredible potential when curiosity, creativity, and determination converge in the hands of a motivated teenager willing to think outside conventional boundaries.

Portable Water Dispenser Concept Pulls Drinking Water from Air

Water is one of those things you don’t really think about until you don’t have it. For millions of people, that’s a daily reality, getting enough clean water is a constant challenge, and the usual fixes just aren’t cutting it. That’s why this “Water from Air” dispenser concept stands out. It’s not a high-tech gadget with fancy screens, but a simple, portable device that claims to pull drinkable water straight out of the air.

At first glance, it looks like a cross between a science project and a camping jug. The design is all about practicality: a conical body, a clear top chamber, a bright yellow grip, and a blue tap you can’t miss. It’s lightweight, easy to carry, and the kind of thing you could imagine tossing in the back of a car or hauling to a remote spot where water is more wishful thinking than reality. The best part? Most of it can be 3D printed, so if something breaks, you’re not stuck waiting for a replacement from halfway across the world.

How It Works: Science, But Make It Simple

Here’s where it gets interesting. The magic ingredient is something called a Metal-Organic Framework, or MOF for short. Think of MOFs as super sponges; these materials are packed with tiny holes that suck up water vapor from the air, even when it’s not exactly humid. In this concept, you open the top and let the MOF do its thing for about an hour. After that, you close it up, and the trapped air starts to condense into actual water droplets.

The extraction process is a four-step cycle that doesn’t need much from the user. After the MOF absorbs moisture, closing the container lets the air inside warm up and water condenses out. Open a valve, and the water flows down into the main chamber, ready for you to pour out. The process is passive—no batteries, no solar panels, just the material doing its job. The water you get is basically distilled, so it’s free from most pollutants, and you don’t need extra filters.

Why This Stands Out

Most atmospheric water generators you see are bulky, power-hungry, and honestly, not something you’d want to lug around. This concept is all about portability and independence. The designers say it could produce up to 6 liters a day, which is enough to keep a small family hydrated. That’s not going to handle all your washing and cooking, but for drinking, it’s a solid start.

The modular build is a big plus. If you’re the kind of person who likes to tinker or hates throwing things away, you’ll appreciate being able to swap out parts or print new ones yourself. And because it doesn’t rely on electricity, you’re not tied to the grid or worried about running out of juice when you need water most.
