Located four miles from Manchester’s city center, Withington Baths is a cherished historical asset. Opened in 1913 as the city’s first pool for mixed swimming, it was saved from demolition by passionate community advocacy. Now managed by the charity Love Withington Baths, the facility is sustained by fundraising and a significant grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. To secure its financial future and meet growing membership, Wei Feng’s proposal introduces a vital extension designed for year-round activity.

 

Driven by three core principles — well-being, connection, and inclusivity — the design team sought to transform Withington Baths into a vibrant, layered space that reflects community values and ecological harmony. A central theme is human–non-human coexistence, realized through integrated green infrastructure and birdhouse architecture. This approach creates a shared habitat, inviting biodiversity to thrive alongside human activity and turning the building into a living ecosystem.

Withington Baths’ new extension salvages its historical context

 

The extension’s form completes Henry Price’s original early-20th-century plan, which envisioned three connected Edwardian buildings. While financial constraints halted the original project at two, Wei Feng’s proposal erects the third structure in a contemporary language. ‘We respect the historical context by using brick and terracotta but reinterpret Edwardian features like columns and pilasters as functional ventilation towers,’ notes the architect. The roll-glass windows and terracotta birdhouses are inspired by the iconic bluebell tiles in the existing pool, forging a subtle link between old and new. We addressed several key design challenges. The original building’s ground floor, a service void lacking daylight, is reimagined to support open, accessible uses. A 580 millimeter level difference between the old and new structures, a significant accessibility hurdle, was resolved with a carefully integrated 1:12 ramp.

 

Construction also posed technical difficulties, with complex, bespoke structural junctions requiring extensive digital modeling and collaboration with engineers. Sustainability is central to our material selection. Recycled galvanized steel, reclaimed brick, and prefabricated CLT beams reduce embodied carbon and minimize waste. The spatial layout strategically separates wet and dry zones: the original building retains the swimming pools, while the extension houses a gym, yoga studio, co-working spaces, and a café. This project not only preserves Withington Bath’s rich legacy but also positions it for a resilient and inclusive future.

On the outskirts of Nicosia, Cyprus, draftworks* architects completes House ED, a family home around a wild inner garden. Designed for a couple and their two children, the 230-square-meter residence unfolds behind a succession of concentric white walls, culminating in a lush, planted void that becomes the visual anchor of the project.

 

The design builds on the idea of the perivolos, the traditional high wall that once enclosed Cypriot homes and their gardens. Here, it’s reinterpreted as a series of white, protective layers that create a sense of privacy and enclosure while still allowing light and air to flow through.

Historically, the perivolos was used in Cypriot homes to shield private courtyards from the outside world. In House ED, Nicosia- and Athens-based draftworks* architects brings this idea into the present through a series of layered white walls that gradually lead from the street to the heart of the home. Rather than entering all at once, you pass through a sequence of spaces, catching glimpses of light, shade, and small pockets of planted greenery, before reaching the central garden. This garden, slightly wild and protected, offers the family a private connection to nature, even in the middle of a growing suburb.

 

Visually, the house takes cues from modernist architecture, specifically from Adolf Loos, with its crisp white surfaces and clean geometry. The extended use of the white color plays a key role in how the house works with light. Throughout the day, sunlight bounces across the walls, a quality especially important to the family, who wanted a home where light could be felt as part of their daily rhythm.

 

Beyond its form, the house is designed as a backdrop for everyday moments and for the couple’s collection of art. Every room is arranged around the central garden, so there’s always a visual and spatial connection to it, no matter where you are in the house.

Product designer Yiannis Ghikas, in collaboration with Myran Scandinavian Design, introduces Artificiel, a series of porcelain objects based on the sculpted cement surfaces found on mid-20th-century apartment buildings in Athens. The project documents and translates the city’s vanishing artificiel facades, once crafted by hand and now threatened by new insulation regulations, into tangible domestic forms, like cups and bowls, using digital scanning and traditional casting techniques.

 

To preserve this overlooked layer of the city’s material history, the designer scans three types of surviving artificiel patterns, chtení (fine), thrapína (medium), and koutaliá (coarse), from buildings in Kypseli and Kolonaki neighborhoods using photogrammetry and 3D modeling. These digital textures are then used to produce molds for porcelain objects, which were cast and manufactured in Portugal.

Artificiel refers to a colloquial term for a finishing method that gave many Athenian ‘polykatoikia’ buildings their textured cement exteriors. These surfaces were shaped manually by skilled construction workers known as ‘pelekanoi’ between the 1930s and 1970s. Though once a defining feature of Athenian urban architecture, they are now being covered or destroyed as external thermal insulation becomes the new norm under contemporary building standards.

 

Through Artificiel, Athens-based Yiannis Ghikas together with Myran offer a way to engage with the architectural skin of Athens in a moment when it risks being erased. Rather than preserving these surfaces in place, The series relocates these surfaces into a different context, one that is domestic and tactile. It draws attention to a vernacular aesthetic that is often ignored, yet remains central to the city’s visual identity.

Riverside House stands along rural village’s river outside Beijing

 

Located on the outskirts of Beijing, Xiān Architects’ Riverside House is situated north of a river in a small village setting, surrounded by varied residential typologies including a trout house, a gathering space, and traditional village homes. The 170-square-meter residence was designed to accommodate essential living functions, including three bedrooms, a dining area, and a living room.

 

Budget constraints informed the use of a vernacular brickconcrete structural system. This approach enabled the creation of continuous, closely spaced vertical walls that ensure direct load transfer between the aligned floors. The house is organized into three vertically stacked volumes: a two-level bedroom cluster to the west, a master bedroom and dining area to the southeast, and a northeast volume comprising a tearoom and a rooftop stargazing platform. This configuration optimizes solar orientation and site-specific sightlines. An elevated terrace connects the living room and tearoom, functioning as both a social space and a visual platform. The arrangement of the three main building masses was calibrated to allow for canopies over neighboring structures while maximizing spatial layering and depth. A cantilevered roof at the top level extends outward, forming a recessed volume that reframes the surrounding landscape as an introspective space.

Material selections support the architectural logic: board-formed concrete with exposed wood grain defines structural and spatial elements, while washed stone clads the exterior. These materials were fabricated and assembled using local construction techniques, reflecting the topographical and climatic character of the site. Craftsmanship remains visible in surface treatments and formwork, revealing a tactile dialogue between built form and its natural surroundings. Key architectural gestures, such as the solid concrete masses, integrated parapets, and the cantilevered terrace, emphasize geometric clarity and spatial density. The northeast stargazing platform, defined by three enclosing concrete walls, functions as a formal terminus within the composition and establishes a spatial frame open to the sky. The overall design by Xiān Architects Studio translates environmental forces, light, wind, topography into spatial and material responses. Rather than acting as a scenic object, the house is conceived as a companion to its natural context, reflecting an architecture shaped by rhythm, restraint, and embeddedness within the site.

Turn Any Glasses into Meta Smart Glasses with this $79 Snap-on Camera Module

As much as I’ve become a fan of smart glasses in the last 1 year of owning a pair of Meta Ray-Bans, I can absolutely understand that there’s a significant subset of people who don’t want to A. Buy a separate pair of spectacles just for the cameras, and B. Constantly have a camera lens tethered to the side of your face at all times. People love freedom, people also love privacy, but people love tech too – for this subset of people is the CAMIO, a pen-shaped snap-on accessory that attaches to any pair of glasses, giving you a 2.7K camera that you can use for POV recording – and then take off once you’re done.

Let’s be honest, this isn’t the sleekest, classiest-looking gadget out there. The CAMIO is fairly noticeable, unlike the Meta Ray-Bans or other smart glasses, and with good reason. It’s designed independently, unlike other smart glasses that go through years of design and optimization to carefully integrate tech into a slim frame. The CAMIO has no such reservation – it packs everything in the form factor of a highlighter, and attaches onto any specs you could be wearing. What it lacks in ‘sleek integrated-ness’, it makes up for with a lightweight design (weighing just 19 grams or a little more than an AirTag), 2.7K video capture (as opposed to Meta’s 720p), and a built-in display that lets you toggle through the CAMIO’s settings as well as view what it’s captured. The best part? The thing just costs $79, and can be attached to ANY specs you already have, without any added expense.

CAMIO’s designer markets this as a ‘Spy Camera’, and I can see why. Sure, it doesn’t really do much in terms of subtlety when it’s mounted on your face, but the beauty of this camera is that you can pretty much mount it anywhere. Place it on a table, on a bookshelf, hide it in your plants, and you’ve got a bona fide security camera that covertly captures things around you. When it isn’t a spy cam, it can be worn as a heads-up camera for POV recording, whether for sports, vlogging, or any sort of documentation.

It might have a very linear design, but the CAMIO is essentially a tiny action cam. It comes with a lens, a speaker, a mic, and even a tiny screen, allowing you to toggle settings as well as use it as a viewfinder/media player. The 12MP camera on the front has a 110° FOV, recording 2.7K at 30fps to CAMIO’s on-board storage. You can, for the sake of storage space, also toggle to 1080p and 720p settings, although it’s personally a better idea to record at the highest resolution possible and then downsample after editing/stabilizing. Yes, the device does capture images too, at a maximum of 4032px wide.

CAMIO’s camera automatically adjusts white balance, ISO, and exposure, although there isn’t any mention of what sort of image stabilization it offers. Anything that happens probably happens on a software level. Although the creators say this gadget is perfect for using as a POV action camera while biking, etc. For me, personally, having smart glasses was my alternative to a dash-cam, allowing me to document stuff while on my two-wheeler. This device could be perfect for such tasks too.

The way you use it is as simple as just clipping it onto the side of your spectacles. The built-in clip is fairly secure, although I’m not entirely sure what stability it offers on extra-slim frames. The thicker the frame, the tighter the fit, is my guess. You could also mount the CAMIO on the other side of your head, albeit upside down, but that’s the best level of ambidexterity you’ll get.

Stuff that gets captured gets stored on CAMIO’s external storage, allowing for up to 128GB of data (through a MicroSD card). A built-in mic captures audio too, and the CAMIO has its own speakers as well, allowing you to easily play back content. Unlike smart glasses, however, you can’t use the speaker to play music or answer calls. This thing is JUST a camera, although it’s also a pretty good one on paper.

Each CAMIO comes with its own Wi-Fi app that lets you access footage as well as remotely control recording. That means you could place your CAMIO pretty much anywhere and trigger the thing to record on command. That sort of makes it a fairly impressive ‘spy’ device, capable of recording things while staying hidden from sight, thanks to its rather compact, unassuming design. It sort of looks like a medical test kit, to be honest, so you could pass it off as a contactless thermometer if anyone asks. It’s also my obligation to warn you to never record anyone without their consent – don’t get into legal trouble, seriously. I’ve been stopped by security at the airport before, and even though I wasn’t recording anything (I was listening to music), the risk pretty much outweighs any benefit.

The CAMIO currently comes with a 300mAh battery (although BQEYZ doesn’t specify how many hours of usage you get with it), and there’s no official word on any IP rating, so maybe don’t wear this in heavy rain. It does, however, come with FCC, CE, and RoHS certification.

You can grab the CAMIO in either black or white (depending on what aesthetic you’re going for). Each device comes with its own USB-C charging cable, a microfiber pouch, and for that $79 price tag, BQEYZ also throws in a pair of blue-light blocking glasses and a spectacle case for good measure. The device ships globally starting September 2025, and if you’re looking to splurge upwards of $299 on a pair of smart glasses, I’d suggest spending the equivalent of a decent dinner on this tiny device that turns your existing spectacles into smart ones!

3D printed titanium watch STRACTRA places the hours over geometric, 180-degree arc

Timepiece with 360-degree ring that tells minutes

 

Ayoub Ahmad designs a concept 3D printed titanium watch named STRACTRA with the hours placed over a geometric, 180-degree arc. Inspired by nature, seemingly tree branches slither around the frame, forming uniform lines on the said arc on the right side of the timepiece. Between the gaps of these coffin-shaped structures, the numbers depicting the hours are shown, colored in sunset orange. Even the hand pointing at the hours is in orange, standing out among the color scheme of titanium. For the minutes, there’s a 360-degree ring just below the hand, going in a full circle to complete the time-telling of the concept 3D printed titanium watch.

Unlike traditional round or square-shaped timepiece designs, the frame of the concept 3D printed titanium watch STRACTRA appears organic, as the case displays smooth and flowing lines as if they were branches of trees or just natural curves. Designer Ayoub Ahmad imagines his design to use 3D printing for production, with titanium as the main material throughout the watch. The technology can allow him to realize the design of the arc for the hours, the disc for the minutes, and the hexagonal shape of the timepiece’s body.

 

On the left face of the concept 3D printed titanium watch STRACTRA, there’s a seemingly grille design that may have bumps for tactility, and the creeping lines cross over the minute disc in the middle to demonstrate the growth of tree branches. The arc continues from the hours to the disc in the middle, allowing the wearer to see the gears inside the watch. Next to the ring, the name of the concept 3D printed titanium watch STRACTRA appears engraved. At the time of publishing, the timepiece design is a concept project, and Ayoub Ahmad says the watch is his entry to Dubai Watch Week, which is set to return for its seventh edition between November 19th and 23rd, 2025.
