Researchers at Columbia University develop robot metabolism, an idea and a system that allows machines to grow, heal, and even take parts from other robots by consuming them. This concept means that a robot can take materials from around it or from other machines and use them to build or fix itself, which is similar to how living things use food or other parts of nature to grow and survive. It is a new idea and a big step forward in robotics because it gives robots the ability to change, repair, and become better without any help from humans.

Self-healing and -growing machines using truss links

 

Using Columbia University’s robot metabolism idea, machines can build themselves from small parts. For example, 2D shapes can come together and change into a full 3D shape like a tetrahedron, or a triangle-based pyramid, and after forming, the robot can even add more links to become stronger or faster. In one test by the researchers, a robot added one more Truss Link to itself, and the resulting new part worked like a walking stick and helped itself move downhill 66 percent faster. This study shows that the robot became better by growing with an extra part.

 

Another feature of Columbia University’s robot metabolism idea is the machines’ self-healing abilities. If one Truss Link is damaged, the robot can remove it and replace it with a new one it finds nearby. Sometimes, other robots can help by giving them a Truss Link or helping them connect it so they can survive and become ‘better.’ The robots can also fix their shape if they fall apart. If two parts of a robot are separated, the robot can put them back together, an approach called self-reconfiguration. It is important because most robots today cannot do that without a human.

This robot design is modular so that the machines can rebuild themselves if one part breaks. In this way, there’s no need to produce a whole new robot, and it is easier for the user to repair them given that small parts tend to be mass-produced compared to larger components. The researchers say that the Truss-style modular robots are not new, but their work is the first time that these machines demonstrate how they can grow and improve themselves. Many older designs use cube- or ball-shaped modules, but those can make building big robots hard. 

 

Truss Links, with their stick shape and free-form connectors, are more flexible and allow for more open designs. This Wooden Sony Mirrorless Camera Model Gives The Cold, Black Camera A Warm, Personable Makeover

Although purely a model-making exercise from the annals of Ridhima Saini’s portfolio, this Sony Alpha 7R looks so gorgeous I wish it were real. Somewhere down the road, man ditched wooden ‘camera obscuras’ for metal and then molded plastic. In doing so, we lost the charm of hand-made cameras, their craftsmanship, and just the fact that each camera felt more precious rather than factory-made.

Saini’s version of the Sony Alpha 7R brings back that warmth to modern-age mirrorless cameras. The model, made entirely out of wood-block and MDF, has a beautiful appeal that ditches the camera body’s splatter-texture for something more unique, like a wood-grain fingerprint that is about as unique as the photos you click with this camera.

“A hand crafted wooden scale model of the Sony Alpha 7R, built to exact proportions. The process began with detailed technical drawings and dimensioning based on the original camera,” says Saini. “Careful material selection played a key role, wood formed the core structure, while metal and acrylic were used to highlight the other key elements and features. The model was shaped through a combination of technical drawings, material selection, machining and hands-on work capturing the essence of the original form and feel.”

“22 identical MDF shapes were laser cut for the grip. These were arranged to create an inward curve towards the upper end. The inward curve was achieved by shifting individual pieces slightly forward and backward during assembly,” Saini describes. “A movable dial was installed within the grip. The dial was made by splitting one MDF grip part and attaching a 3mm aluminium rod as the rotational axis. Grooves on the dial’s edges were created using a diamond file for better texture and grip.”

This is a common exercise within the industrial design circuit, to give students an understanding of material, form, and proportions. I myself made a Braun beard-trimmer back in the day… but what really caught my eye about Saini’s reinterpretation is that she chose deliberately to not paint the wood over with appropriate colors. Instead, she kept the model entirely raw and wooden, albeit with a few details like spray-painted knurled knobs on the top, and laser-etched branding on the front and back.

The result is a camera that looks and feels just slightly different enough to completely change its personality. From a cold, clinical, black box of imaging and intrigue, it goes to something with heirloom value. It looks warm, approachable, and genuinely interesting, with how the wood grain wraps around the body of the camera.

This 3D printed iPod Classic fidget toy with clicky scroll wheel will take you back in time

Fidget toys don’t necessarily have to look into the future for inspiration. In fact, they can look back in time for one. If that has left you confused, you should follow the works of a 3D printing master artist, wontonnn of wontonnn-creation (YouTube Channel). The guy has 3D printed a little flip phone fidget and a Walkman fidget toy already, and now, for some Apple fanfare, he is tapping into the design of that most iconic and beloved iPod Classic. I can already see many drooling!

If you ask me, I would, if given a chance, grab an iPod Classic simply for its nostalgia. But there is definitely a large population that believes, for a fact, that the iPod changed the music industry as we knew it before the anodized aluminum beauty took center stage. It not only cemented Apple’s image as a design-first company but also single-handedly championed through the profits of MP3 players, Walkmans et al. While the real thing cannot be revived for its love, the 3D printed iPod Classic fidget toy should satiate the craving.

The 3D printed fidget toy is a nod to Apple’s classic digital music player and is rightly dubbed the iFidget Classic. It is a smart idea, which is part of many interesting creations from wontonnn, including a 3D printed mini arcade racing toy we featured a few days back. Like that revived the Road Fighter nostalgia, this one brings you tactile nostalgia of the click wheel on the iPod Classic.

The creator notes, “I loved my iPod Classic when I was younger,” This retro-inspired electronic fidget design is a memory of that era, complete with a clicky scroll wheel and screen where the menu selection is highlighted like on the real thing. With the fidget toy, you can actually have the satisfying feel of the iconic click wheel as the reminiscent rotating dial is fiddled with. It produces tactile clicks with every turn and as the mechanical bar moves up and down on the menu, corresponding to the turns of the rotating dial.

The click wheel on the iPod Classic was a physical controller resting below the screen as in a fidget, but it had touch-sensitive input that was used to navigate the menu, select items in it, and control the music playback, play/pause, and skipping tracks on the wheel. While you won’t get all that on the tactile wheel of the fidget toy, rolling the fingers on the classic should be satisfying for the nostalgic and stress-relieving for the fidgeters. To unveil its EQT footwear collection, Adidas and design studio Playlab carve a 200-meter running track within the grounds of an active gypsum mine near Santa Fe, New Mexico. With the conceptual clarity of land art, the project is conceived as a temporary experience which will ultimately return to the earth. During its short run, it offered a spatial experience shaped by material constraint and an integration with the remote, barren desert.

 

The track is located more than 2,000 meters above sea level. The site offers a stark, open expanse of white terrain, a working mine carved into the desert landscape. The choice of location was purposeful. ‘It was important for us to create this somewhere away from the center,’ says Playlab co-founder Archie Lee Coates. ‘Somewhere you would have to get to, outside of the big cultural centers.’ The site’s remoteness echoes the solitary nature of trail running in the region and invites a slower, more considered arrival, akin to a pilgrimage.

 

The track’s simple geometry shows a dual-ringed oval composed entirely of materials sourced from the gypsum-rich site itself. Its design references the site-specific works of land artists like Michael Heizer and Hansjörg Voth, as well as symbolic journeys such as the Camino de Santiago. The effect is about orientation, and framing the act of running within a broader context of environment and ritual.

adidas and playlab Sculpt the Surface from the Site

 

All components of the running track, from the one-meter outer wall to the benches and fire pit, are built by Adidas and Playlab using raw gypsum from the New Mexico mine. Rather than importing materials, Playlab chose to work with what was already available, treating the site both as source and setting. The track surface is dyed using water-based pigments that gradually fade with time, emphasizing the impermanence of the installation.

 

The outer ring is kept low enough to maintain sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, while the inner wall rises to two meters, shielding a recessed gathering area equipped with seating and a central fire circle. This interior space transforms the structure from a track into a temporary pavilion, able to accommodate post-run gatherings, or simply spaces for pause.

A Temporary Monument with Material Afterlife

 

Standing as a minimalist intervention in the New Mexico desert, the Adidas running track is informed in circular thinking. Once the installation has served its purpose, the gypsum structures can be dismantled and reincorporated into the mine’s production stream — ultimately forming drywall for buildings across New Mexico. The design acknowledges its temporary nature while at once resisting disposability and waste.

 

This collaboration marks a rare convergence between brand activation and site-sensitive design. Rather than overt symbolism or graphic branding, the project embraces restraint. The architecture of the track focuses on process and material honesty. These qualities are more often associated with experimental installations or land art — especially Robert Smithson’s beloved Spiral Jetty — than with commercial sportswear campaigns.

Someone needs to make these Knitted ASMR Mechanical Keycaps ASAP!

Everyone associates mechanical keyboards with audio ASMR. The clacking sound of the keys; the satisfaction of good key-travel, just to be capped off by a beautiful resounding clack that tells you, in no uncertain terms, that the key has been pressed. But what if we took the ASMR to its logical next step? Meet the ASMR Knitted Keyboard, a conceptual board designed to give your fingers a hug the way a good sweater does.

Before I really talk about how much I love this, yes… this keyboard was made using AI. Discovered on the Lovart (an AI agent for designers) home page, this woolen wonder from Leonor09 turns plastic into yarn, with adorably knitted and crocheted keycaps that are just a pleasure to type on. Each keycap is clad in soft wool, and flourished with an element of sweetness, be it a fruit or a baked dessert. The result? Sheer visual and tactile delight, as your eyes and your fingers fall in love with this keyboard.

There isn’t much to say about these keycaps aside from what’s already been said. Most keycaps I’ve covered are made of either plastic or metal, or an odd material like wood. The ones I usually lean towards are very art-driven, with small sculptures or painted details encased in resin (check these out for posterity). This particular AI experiment chooses a material I wouldn’t have expected in a hundred years. Bridging tech and textile, the knitted keycaps sort of reinterpret what ‘comfortable typing’ means for the most of us. The keycaps are cute, adorable, and warm. They might not be function (they might not even be real), but I wish I could type on them just to get a feeling of what typing on air could mean.

Again, this is all AI, but here’s what I love about it. AI serves as a great, quick ideation tool, so if anything, this is now a PSA to knitters, crocheters, and companies like Dwarf Factory to actually push out something as ridiculously avant garde as these. Will they appeal to the mechanical keyboard demographic? Broadly, no. But I’m sure there’s definitely a niche community of gamers who also love everything cute, from chibis and anime to adorable Japanese desserts, pop culture, and niche activities like knitting and baking.

Although the AI doesn’t do the best possible job visualizing the details on the keycaps, it only makes sense that they use a combination of wool and plastic. The plastic elements would be the details that interface with the keyboard, like the switches, etc. The rest of the cap can literally be made from wool (with an inner chassis, obviously), and I’m sure this would easily work. My only real concern, as much as I love these, is typing with wet hands or Cheetos-dust fingers… and maybe statuc electricity. Oh, definitely static electricity.

This LEGO ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. The World’ Build Perfectly Captures the Film’s Epic Epicness

Edgar Wright’s 2010 film adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim graphic novels remains one of the most visually inventive movies of the past few decades, a kinetic blend of comic book aesthetics, video game logic, and indie rock energy that somehow works brilliantly despite (or perhaps because of) its genre-bending madness. Though it initially bombed at the box office, the film has since achieved well-deserved cult status, with fans obsessively quoting lines like “Bread makes you fat?!” and “You punched the highlights out of her hair!” while rocking out to Sex Bob-omb’s “Garbage Truck.” The film’s unique visual language, where characters burst into coins when defeated and onomatopoeic text appears during fights, makes it a perfect candidate for LEGO adaptation.

That’s exactly what one talented builder has accomplished with this incredible Scott Pilgrim vs. The World LEGO Ideas submission, a 1,000+ piece diorama that recreates the film’s climactic showdown between Scott and evil ex number seven, Gideon Graves. The build captures that perfect moment when Scott finally realizes he’s not fighting for Ramona but for himself, delivering the iconic line, “No, I want to fight you for me,” which appears on a printed tile at the base of the model. Every detail here feels lovingly crafted by someone who clearly understands what makes the source material special, from the tiered pyramid battleground to the stacks of gold coins representing defeated exes.

The pyramid structure forms the centerpiece of the build, with its striking black and red color scheme perfectly mirroring the film’s climactic battle venue. Scott and Gideon face off at the summit, both wielding transparent swords that capture the video game power-up aesthetic from the movie. Ramona Flowers stands mid-leap on the steps below, her blue hair instantly recognizable even in minifigure form. In true comic form, the build also includes positionable floating text bubbles like “BAD!” or “2 Player Mode”, mimicking the motion graphics in the movie. This means you don’t just have a static model – you can quite literally build out battles between Gideon and Scott, Gideon and Knives, or even have Scott and Knives teaming up to defeat the evil boss while Ramona just awkwardly sits and watches events unfold.

Sex Bob-omb hasn’t been forgotten either. The left side of the diorama features a removable band platform where Kim Pine sits behind her drum kit, complete with the band’s logo, while Stephen Stills stands ready with his guitar. Scott can join them when he’s not busy fighting evil exes, allowing fans to recreate the film’s musical performances. The creator has thoughtfully included all the necessary accessories: custom printed guitars, Knives’ knives, Gideon’s staff, Kim’s drumsticks, and even garlic bread, referencing Scott’s bread obsession. A hidden storage drawer in the back keeps these small pieces organized when not in use.

The minifigure lineup covers all the essential characters for the finale: Scott, Ramona, Gideon, Kim, Stephen, and Knives Chau. Each figure appears to be carefully designed with appropriate outfits and accessories, capturing their distinctive looks from the film. Gideon sports his white blazer and glasses, while Scott wears his signature tee shirt. The band, Ramona, Knives, are all dressed to play, and there are enough interactive elements on the pyramid to let you set up a dynamic scene. The base of the pyramid doubles as storage too, letting you stash text bubbles, weapons, and other elements away in a jiffy.

It’s common for LEGO builders to make MOCs of their favorite movies/series/scenes – and this one is no different, but it does justice to the movie’s visual style too, mimicking the exaggerated action dynamic of the comic book. The 1,000-piece count puts it in the mid-range of LEGO sets, substantial enough to be impressive on display but not so massive as to be prohibitively expensive if LEGO were to produce it. The build needs support on the LEGO Ideas platform to have a chance at becoming an official set, so if you’re among those who appreciate Scott’s epic journey to defeat the League of Evil Exes and win the heart of Ramona Flowers, you might want to lend your vote to the cause.

The space is oriented towards supporting open conversations about sexuality, relationships, and self-discovery. The book collection plays a central role, reflecting one of the founders’ background in publishing and reinforcing the project’s educational focus.

 

The shop’s interior is designed as a single zoned space with a perimeter system of product and literature displays, and a central area, a ring-shaped shelving structure with passages. This element forms the compositional focal point of the space and simultaneously functions as an exhibition. Due to its shape and arrangement, it allows for public events where visitors can gather around, and a speaker or lecturer can stand inside the ring.

Njoy’s interior promotes reflection, interaction, and discovery

 

The spatial solution is based on the desire to eliminate associations with traditional shops. The architectural language of the interior is deliberate; it avoids archetypes that might cause tension or discomfort. Instead, it leans towards a feeling of playfulness, lightness, and gradual immersion. The space is built as a neutral environment with simple lines, yet at the same time colorful, with light background shades on the shelves and bright colors at the reception and bar areas.

 

Designers Nastia Mirzoyan and Olena Kruglova perceive Njoy’s interior as light and somewhat playful, creating a subtle atmosphere of fun and friendliness. This is a conscious choice, since in addition to intimate education, toys are also sold here, and this ‘playfulness’ highlights this unexpected aspect of the space. Additionally, there is a small bar and several soft furniture pieces, a comfortable, inviting space that serves as a gentle entry point for those exploring the topic. The soft poufs as art objects were created by Ukrainian artist Serhii Drofa. Lightning above the red stand is bespoke-made according to Nastya Mirzoyan’s drawings.
