Ridhima Saini shows what modern cameras such as the Sony Alpha 7R could look like if they were handcrafted from wood again. The student designer helps bring back the period when photographic devices used wood as their primary material, like the camera obscura. For this project, she crafts the wooden camera to match the Sony Alpha 7R’s real shape and size, guided by Mr. Trilok Chauhan, as her goal is to make the scale model look and feel like its real counterpart. While the main body and material are wood, she uses metal and acrylic for the details, with the latter being used around and in the part of the lens alongside medium-density fiberboard.

 

The Sony Alpha 7R wooden camera’s grip comprises 22 fiberboard pieces, each having the same size, so when they’re stacked together, they form a curve. There’s a movable dial inside the grip, and a three-millimeter aluminum rod works as the axis. The designer also uses a small diamond file to cut the grooves on the dial’s edge, giving it texture and making it easier to turn. The knobs are also made from aluminum rod, and for the screen that can rotate 180 degrees, the team cut three small cuboids, two of them longer to let the screen turn, and a steel rod is inserted into the holes to act as the hinge pin, allowing the screen cover to rotate all the way around the axis. Finally, the team sands every wooden part of the Sony Alpha 7R camera to smoothen its parts.

The Role of Wood in Early photography devices

 

In the past, the frames of camera obscuras were made of cardboard boxes and paper, with lenses made of plastic magnifying glasses. Controlling light was important in these devices because the light coming from outside could ruin the image, so wood was an ideal material because it was dark and blocked light well. The material was malleable, so it took on shapes easily, and it didn’t react with chemicals or give off odors, which were then useful features in traditional photography. Wood was able to keep the temperature and sound stable inside the camera too, as it is naturally ideal for vibration absorption, a handy helper during long camera exposures.

 

But wood was also heavy, as seen in the dubbed first daguerreotype camera, made by French art restorer Alphonse Giroux. It was a wooden box design with sliding parts weighing over 40 pounds, so it absorbed water from the air and could make it expand or shrink. This caused the wood to change shape, crack, or bend. As camera designs became more precise, it became a serious issue because small changes in shape could ruin the picture by misaligning the lens or film. Because of this, at least as one of the reasons, the cameras shifted from using wood to metal when the technology became more advanced.

Shifting to Metal in Camera Design

 

During the Industrial Revolution, machines were invented that could produce metal parts, and cameras began to use metal bodies, a material considered stronger and more stable than wood. When Austrian optician Peter Friedrich Voigtländer made a metal camera in 1841, it was a step forward and a shift because it consisted of metal instead of wood and featured the faster Petzval lens. By the late 1800s and early 1900s, metal cameras became more prevalent, and they were found to be easier to carry, last longer, and allow for more complex features. The camera body was more than just a container but a part of the system that produced high-quality images. It also helped that metal did not change shape with heat or moisture, and it could support better lens systems.

 

Photography improved over time, as better lenses needed more accurate camera parts. Wooden parts were not cut out for lighter, faster, and more convenient cameras, and so the manufactured, metal-looking photographic devices began spreading out. These days, however, shifting to metal from wood misses the touch of manual craftsmanship in exchange for faster production using machines. The distinctive care in crafting cameras is absent, as human hands were replaced by machines. But designers like Ridhima Saini are able to bring wooden cameras back, even if, at the moment, her Sony Alpha 7R is a scale model and not a functional one. It poses an example that, given the current technologies at hand, new cameras have a future of using natural materials that revive their distinctive character and traditional craftsmanship amidst automated production.

Daria Sheina installs prefabricated home in canadian forest

 

Daria Sheina Studio presents a model of remote living with The Nest, a house rising above the dense coastal forests of Keats Island, just off the shore of Vancouver, Canada.

 

Built for a forested, largely inaccessible site, the three-story retreat is fully self-sufficient and is assembled using prefabricated mass timber elements that were flown in by helicopter. The project reflects a broader interest in how small-scale architecture can adapt to difficult terrains with minimal environmental impact. 

 

Composed of two offset geometric volumes stacked vertically over three levels, the 100-square-meter home is organized from bottom to top, housing an entry and living space on the first floor, a lounge on the second, and a bedroom at the top, allowing for views, privacy, and a small footprint.

The Nest is a low-impact approach to remote island living

 

Keats Island, a short ferry ride from Vancouver, has a year-round population of around 50 residents and limited infrastructure. The home’s name, The Nest, was chosen by the clients and informed much of the conceptual thinking behind the design. ‘It evoked a sense of solitude and belonging.’ shares architect Daria Sheina, describing how the idea of a nest, protective, embedded, and shaped by its surroundings, guides the formal and spatial logic of the project. 

 

The site, which spans four hectares, required a low-impact building strategy due to its ecological sensitivity and inaccessibility. With no road access to the top of the island, all materials had to be transported by barge and helicopter. Prefabrication was critical, so the Vancouver-based design practice Daria Sheina Studio worked with construction company BC Passive House to develop a digitally modeled, panelized structure that could be efficiently fabricated, delivered, and assembled on site. Once delivered, the shell was installed in two days.

Daria Sheina Studio aims to merge the home into its forested context through material choices, driven by durability and efficiency. Western red cedar siding will weather to a natural grey, while exposed timber and green linoleum, cladding the interior, mirror the surrounding moss and forest floor. The building is powered entirely by solar energy, uses rainwater collection and filtration, and includes an incinerating toilet, allowing it to function independently from municipal utilities.

 

The interior design focuses on clarifying the functions, while the furnishings include client-selected pieces that introduce color and texture. In addition to the main house, the site also includes a small bunkie and workshed, integrated into the lush setting without formal landscaping or clearing.

 

For the clients, Chadd Andre and Sean Sikorski, the project is meant to provide an alternative to city life in terms of scale and pace. ‘Keats Island is such a special place – it’s so close to the city, and yet a million miles away. The Nest is meant to amplify that effect for us, providing us with an escape to balance our sanity and mental health from the realities we easily get caught up in back in Vancouver. As its name implies, The Nest is a sheltering, nurturing space in the trees,’ they explain, describing the home as a place to reset. It is close enough to Vancouver to remain accessible but remote enough to allow for a complete shift in environment.

an off-grid, 3d printed ‘house for the future’ made of soil

 

A dwelling that dissolves back into the earth, Lib Work’s Lib Earth House pushes the potential of 3D printed construction by fusing digital fabrication with an ancient material — soil. Located in Japan, the newly-built Model B is developed as part of the company’s sustainable vision for the ‘house of the future’, made entirely from a cement-free mix of earth, lime, and natural fibres. Given that the materials are abundant, renewable, and biodegradable, at the end of its life cycle much of the house can be returned to the ground. In turn, this reduces landfill waste, closing the loop on its environmental impact. The company’s custom soil-based mix is shaped using 3D printing technology that allows for greater design freedom and formal flexibility than conventional methods. Soft curves, diagonals, and irregular geometries thus become part of the architectural language, the layers and undulations reflecting the natural behavior of soil.

Lib Earth House is a step forward in Lib Work’s pursuit of sustainable, technology-driven housing that breaks from conventional forms and building logic, with the house’s organic profile and off-grid energy model forming only part of its ambition. Building on earlier models, the studio’s latest iteration improves structural strength fivefold while significantly reducing CO2 emissions during production — outperforming both reinforced concrete and even timber-framed construction in emissions terms. Using an additive manufacturing process, the team 3D printed the house’s walls directly with this custom earthen mix, made strong and workable through proprietary formulations.

 

In terms of performance, the house offers a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional concrete construction for a 100-square-meter structure, and even performs better than timber in certain lifecycle scenarios. Sensors embedded into the walls monitor temperature, humidity, and structural integrity, while a solar-powered, battery-backed energy system allows for energy independence. Inside, the residence features a fluid layout wrapped around a central courtyard, allowing wind and sunlight to move naturally through the space. Alongside IoT-integrated appliances and facial recognition at the entry, the architecture stays responsive to climate and use patterns.

Design Mumbai 2025, the second edition of India’s leading B2B design fair, will take place from 26–29 November at Jio World Garden in Mumbai. The four-day event brings together a curated mix of international design powerhouses and homegrown talent, spanning furniture, lighting, interiors, and materials. Organized by a team with global credentials, the fair positions itself as a vital hub for cross-cultural dialogue and industry networking across hospitality, residential, retail, and workplace sectors. After a successful debut, Design Mumbai 2025 promises to scale new heights with an expanded line-up including Poltrona Frau, Hästens, Istituto Marangoni, USM, and Vondom (presented by ABACA), through a rich programme that connects India’s creative energy to the world.

First look at the fair’s 2025 line-up

 

Launched in 2024, Design Mumbai stands as an international trade event that aims to capture the creative momentum and consumer power of India – now the world’s fifth largest economy. The event was co-founded by seasoned design producers with over 60 years of combined experience in staging influential global shows. Held at the centrally located Jio World Garden, the platform was conceived to bridge Indian innovation with global design thinking. What sets the 2025 edition apart is its sharpened focus on sustainability, a broader international footprint, and a richer program of talks, installations, and networking, all meticulously curated to reflect the changing dynamics of design in a globalized world.

 

The 2025 selection features a compelling mix of newcomers and returning names. A centerpiece of this year’s fair is the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) showcase, which includes ‘Refractions’, a collaboration between Australian architect-maker Adam Markowitz, Indian manufacturer Phantom Hands, and AHEC. Their sculptural pieces in American cherry, maple, and red oak reflect an intricate dialogue between materials and form. Joining them on the AHEC stand are new works by x+l, the Amsterdam-based studio known for elegant minimalism; Inoda+Sveje, the Japanese-Danish duo renowned for soft, organic forms; and India’s Chandigarh Collective, which explores the legacy of modernism through a contemporary lens.

From Japan, Set Up Co. brings a minimalist vision through a collaborative stand featuring Kakuhan, a company that specializes in traditional plastering techniques, and Reset, which crafts solid wood furniture in its in-house woodworking studio. Meanwhile, French mother-daughter duo Dorothée Giey and Pia Pijselman of Lux Temporis present kinetic lighting designs that merge mechatronics with natural motion, mesmerizing objects that blur the line between sculpture and function.

 

Alongside new names, several international heavyweights are set to return to Mumbai. Ceccotti and Poltrona Frau bring refined Italian craftsmanship, while Hästens offers its signature luxury sleep systems. Swiss modular furniture brand USM, presented by Cocre8, and Spanish outdoor furniture label Vondom (presented by ABACA) also return. Other key exhibitors include Infiniti, Blå Station, Loco Design, and Light Forms Asia, all showcasing the latest in material and product innovation.

The Indian design scene continues to thrive, with Karkhana leading the way in collectible, concept-driven pieces that sit between art and design. Chacko, a bespoke studio emphasizing local techniques, returns with finely crafted furniture. Hearty Muse Atelier – specializing in plush rugs, dramatic lighting, and custom furnishings – offers tactile luxury with contemporary flair.

 

Sarvatva, a standout from Chandigarh founded by three women designers in 2024, fuses ancient Indian philosophy with minimalist design. Their teak furniture, hand-carved by artisans in Saharanpur, promotes mindful living through deep-rooted craft. Also exhibiting is Hobo Houz, the brainchild of textile designer and pen-and-ink artist Varsha Patra. Her latest collection, Sutrākha, reinvents the intricate tradition of Aari (Khatla) embroidery into modern lifestyle products that honor Indian textile heritage. Returning Indian studios from 2024 include Stonelite, AKFD Studio, Rvardé, Shailesh Rajput Studio, FAZO Project, and Lila, reinforcing the fair’s commitment to platforming both rising and established Indian voices.

cork-clad house in portugal gets upside-down layout through atelier local’s redesign

atelier local turns residence upside down in Portugal

 

Architecture practice atelier local adapts a modest existing house into a more flexible and livable dwelling in Valongo, a small town near Porto, Portugal. The project, Valongo VII, keeps much of the original structure but arranges space in a different way. Instead of adding more volumes to the existing building, the architects choose to flip the typical domestic arrangement by placing bedrooms on the lower floor and relocating the main living area under the pitched roof, producing a house that is small in footprint but spatially generous.

 

The materials used remain pared down, relying on elements that are easy to read and maintain. Existing timber components are painted to create visual continuity and allow for future replacements to blend in over time. Outside, the cork facade is left exposed, its texture and tone grounding the building in its surroundings. At the rear, three octagonal concrete columns, cast using salvaged formwork, support a light wooden terrace that connects the interior to the garden. A rough concrete water tank anchors one edge of the outdoor space, while a mirrored wall reflects the planting, a layered composition by landscape studio pomo.

 

Though the house was originally conceived as a seasonal retreat, its final form suggests what the architects refer to as an ‘urban primitive hut,’ not in reference to an idealized past, but as a framework for inhabiting space with care.

The Valongo-based design team of atelier local worked with elements that were already there, such as stone walls, a timber roof and floor structure, and an old staircase along the party wall. All remaining features were preserved, repaired, or carefully adapted, except the staircase, which was removed due to its poor condition but whose original position guided the new internal layout.

 

On the lower level of Valongo VII, light partition walls define similarly sized bedrooms, each with its own direct access to a quiet courtyard. The entrance hall was also given special attention, with its complex geometry adding spatial interest and a sense of generosity for a house of this size.

 

Upstairs, the original attic becomes a high-ceilinged living space. The pitched roof, previously underused, now opens up long views and allows for cross-ventilation. Amalia Savu’s residential interior design project is a refined exploration of contemporary minimalism infused with natural warmth. Conceived for a private client, the space in Vâlcea, Romania, combines understated luxury with functional elegance, creating a harmonious environment where materiality, light, and proportion define the experience. The concept was to create a space in constant harmony with nature.

 

As a result, the main focal points of the Within a Frame House are natural elements, such as the tree at the heart of the structure, enclosed in a glass cube, and the surrounding landscapes framed by large window openings that function like living paintings. The minimalist design — combining natural materials with clean, contemporary lines — was intentionally chosen to highlight the home’s greatest asset: its exceptional natural setting.

The project features a palette of earthy tones, natural wood, and textured stone, balancing visual calm with tactile richness. Vertical wooden slats and monolithic surfaces create rhythm and depth throughout the open-plan kitchen, dining, and hallway areas.

Casa Las Tupas’ linear volume sits on the slopes of Catapilco

 

Casa Las Tupas is located on the coastal slopes of Catapilco in northern Chile, an area defined by its arid climate, seasonal winds, and a landscape marked by ravines and local biodiversity. Designed by Lucas Maino Fernández Arquitectos, the project responds to the clients’ objective of transitioning from urban to rural living, with a focus on low environmental impact, functional simplicity, and integration with the surrounding terrain.

 

The house is organized as a single rectangular volume aligned along a north–south axis. The orientation maximizes passive lighting and ventilation, with the east and west facades opening to key views and sunlight. A pitched roof descends toward the west, elevating the eastern facade to increase solar exposure while managing heat gain. This approach directly addresses the site’s environmental conditions and enhances interior light quality throughout the day. One of the primary design strategies was to maintain spatial transparency and visual continuity between interior and exterior. A linear skylight is incorporated along the eastern facade to introduce diffuse natural light, while carefully placed windows frame specific views of the landscape. The entrance is approached via a narrow wooden bridge, subtly directing circulation and framing the access point.

Lucas Maino Fernández connects architecture with context

 

The interior follows a linear, sequential layout based on a ‘train of rooms’ scheme. Spaces transition from shared to private zones, beginning with an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area. A small terrace, designed for outdoor cooking or gatherings, extends this common space. To the west, a large covered terrace runs along the facade, protected by an overhanging eave with variable height, providing shade while preserving outward views toward the Las Tupas ravine.

 

The design team at Lucas Maino Fernández Arquitectos selects construction materials for their cost-efficiency and environmental suitability. The use of basic structural systems, untreated finishes, and an emphasis on durability supports the house’s low-maintenance and resource-conscious approach. Internally, lightweight partitions and natural lighting reduce energy reliance while maintaining a comfortable living environment.
