“I have always been fascinated by the textural quality of paintings,” says Oefner. “For me, experiencing works like de Kooning’s Door to the River or Pollock’s Lavender Mist has always been as much a tactile experience as a visual one. These paintings are almost like sculptures to me. What I am doing is removing the canvas entirely and lifting the paint into space, making its physicality completely tangible.”

If I had to guess, he paints onto a strip of acetate or similar, waits for it to dry, then suspends it within the resin before it cures. Any other ideas?

His team worked closely with SHKP to ensure that amenities would align with residents’ daily needs while also serving as a draw for regional visitors.

 

The complex houses both high-performance and recreational facilities, including an indoor stadium for 1,500 spectators, a fencing hall, and a swimming academy. These are complemented by extensive outdoor offerings from football and lacrosse pitches to climbing walls and nature excursions. The entire GO PARK Sports zone is organized to provide sightlines, flow, and ease of access, ensuring that even large-scale events are accessible to the community.

A Solar-Power-Harvesting Tonneau Cover for Pickup Trucks

Because solar panels are easiest to manufacture flat, cars are a pretty poor substrate for them. However, pickup trucks—often seen as a symbol of energy guzzlers—actually provide the perfect platform. Most pickup trucks have beds with level sidewalls. Worksport, an American manufacturer of tonneau covers, reckons that’s the perfect platform for their forthcoming Solis Solar Tonneau Cover.

The company claims the Solis can generate up to 650W of power that can add 2,050 miles of range, in a year, to an electric pickup. The power gathered from the panels is fed into their Cor Hub unit, a portable power station that sits in the bed. A cable running from the Cor Hub can then be used to trickle-charge your truck at Level 1 charging, so this system is for drivers with patience.

Alternatively, Solis could be used in any truck, including gas-powered ones, in order to turn the Cor Hub into a portable power station delivering free energy. The Cor Hub can be configured with multiple batteries, maxing out at a 4000W peak power output with a 3000 Wh storage capacity, allowing it to run even refrigerators or air conditioners, the company claims.

The company has been working on this for about a decade, and says they’re ready to launch the Solis this fall. They’re currently soliciting $25 deposits for pre-orders but, puzzlingly, have not yet named a full price.

Crowd Control Barriers Turned Into Furniture

This Bultan seating is by Maximum, a French furniture brand whose raw material is industrial and municipal waste. This design started with crowd-control barriers (a/k/a Vauban barriers), specifically their design flaw.

“One damaged part, and everything gets thrown away!” the company writes. “Although designed to be robust, security barriers are put through tough conditions. Their feet are their Achilles’ heel. Often crushed, they doom the entire frame to the dumpster, even when the rest remains intact.

“A few bends are all it takes to transform a Vauban barrier into the structure for Bultan.”

For the seating surface, they offer two options. One is wooden slats, sourced from a manufacturer who works with pine, and who cannot use pieces with knots in their finished product. Maximum gladly takes them.

For their upholstered option, they source from a custom fabricator of foam and rubber products. On a daily basis, the company produces offcuts that they deem worthless; these become the cushioning for Bultan seats.

For the upholstery material, the company sources from Tesca, an automotive fabric manufacturer. “Winning over automotive manufacturers isn’t easy, [and] many prototypes are rejected,” Maximum explains. “Technically perfect, these hundreds of meters of fabric samples end up in the trash. These fabrics are used as covers for Bultan’s cushions, giving them welcome industrial engineering qualities! Resistant to abrasion and fire, stain-proof—these textiles still have a lot going for them.”

Most corners in our homes are basically architectural afterthoughts, collecting dust and maybe the occasional spider web.
