At the northern edge of Tirana’s historic center, Oppenheim Architecture breaks ground on New Boulevard Tower, a 38-story residential building that will stand among the tallest in Albania. The footprint of this project is anchored by a new public plaza that draws together three of the city’s most significant spatial axes: the park, the boulevard, and the square.

 

The facade of New Boulevard Tower is built in cast-in-place concrete, using textures and pigments drawn from Tirana’s architectural palette. Throughout the building, wraparound balconies open each apartment to wide views over the city. The top three floors are designed as penthouses, oriented toward the future park.

The project is led by Oppenheim Architecture’s Tirana studio, where a team of local architects and planners has been steadily contributing to Albania’s evolving built environment. New Boulevard Tower continues that trajectory with a material and spatial language shaped by local context.

 

The building rises along Northern Boulevard, a newly developed spine that is central to Tirana’s ongoing shift toward more sustainable and pedestrian-centered planning. As part of a long-term city-wide strategy, over 65% of the redesigned urban core is being allocated to foot and cycle traffic. The role of the tower in this transition is less about visual dominance and more about how it connects different layers of urban life, tying public infrastructure to residential programs, and open space to vertical density.

At street level, the plaza provides a shared ground where public movement converges and overlaps, creating space for everyday use rather than formal programming. ‘This is one of many projects we are delivering in Albania,’ notes Beat Huesler, the firm’s Europe Director. ‘We’re working from our Tirana studio to support the city’s evolution through architecture that reflects place and community.’

 

The tower also incorporates environmental systems in line with Tirana’s broader ecological ambitions. These include green roofs, energy-efficient infrastructure, and passive design strategies. While relatively modest in appearance, such elements signal a shift in how private development is being aligned with public sustainability goals in the city.

How is MOTTO using AI?

MOTTO is a strategy and design firm that specialises in the tech and innovation sectors. It is based in New York, and also has people in London, Berlin and Dallas. Here MOTTO’s co-founders, chief executive officer Sunny Bonnell, and chief operating officer Ashleigh Hansberger, tell us how the studio is using AI.

Broadly speaking, are you excited for how AI will change the design industry, or nervous?

It’s fair to feel both curiosity and caution. But those who lead innovation, engage with it. AI is already reshaping the design industry in meaningful ways. We’re seeing creative teams, including ours, explore how to use it thoughtfully to enhance ideas, not replace them. The excitement is in how it can push us to think differently, and expand what’s possible.

Do you have an agreed policy around AI as a business? How did you create it?

Yes. As a strategic brand company, we take both innovation and ethics seriously. We partnered with our legal team to create a formal policy that aligns with Motto’s values and the evolving landscape of AI use. This policy outlines acceptable use, transparency with clients, intellectual property considerations, and guidelines around data handling and creative attribution.

We wanted a clear framework that empowers our team to experiment and create responsibly, without compromising trust, originality, or human intelligence.

When did you realise AI was going to have an impact on design?

We’ve utilised AI for a few years. One of our first meaningful use cases was the development of our proprietary Motto® Perception Map, launched in 2024. This strategic tool blends our methodology with AI to evaluate and visualize a brand’s performance across seven critical dimensions.

What started as a playful experiment quickly became a breakthrough. From there, the conversation shifted from “Should we use AI?” to “How do we integrate this thoughtfully?”

Have you undergone any AI training, either as a studio or individuals? If so, what was it, and what impact did it have?

Yes, we’ve made a conscious effort to upskill across the team. We’ve built a learning and development library that includes courses like Masters of AI, AI-focused masterclasses, and specialised programs on prompt design, image generation, and AI ethics.

These trainings helped us move beyond surface-level use and toward strategic application. We’ve learned how to craft better prompts, avoid bias, and understand where AI fits – and where it doesn’t. It’s elevated how we think about creativity, not just how we execute it.

How do you use AI in the studio’s creative process? What is it good for? Where are its shortcomings?

AI is a powerful co-pilot in our early-stage process. We use it to stretch imagination – moodboards, naming explorations, storytelling prompts, visual studies, brand voice development. It’s particularly useful for divergent thinking and breaking creative block.

But we also know where to draw the line. AI is not a shortcut for craft, taste, or judgment. It doesn’t know the leadership or culture of a brand, which we’re particularly skilled at uncovering. It can’t replace human intuition, strategic depth, or the emotional intelligence required to build meaning and cultural relevance.

We use AI as a teammate and sparring partner. It sharpens our thinking, but it doesn’t do the thinking for us.

Do you think clients care if/how you use AI in your work?

Yes, and no. Most clients care more about outcomes than the tools used. But that doesn’t mean they’re indifferent. They want to know we’re innovating, using tools responsibly, and not compromising originality or ownership.

The key is transparency. When we use AI, we explain how and why. We also educate clients on where human intelligence makes the difference. It’s not about hiding the tools, it’s about setting clear expectations around the process.

Do you use AI for any non-creative aspects of running your business? If so what, and how does it help?

Absolutely. Behind the scenes, we use AI to streamline operations. It helps with internal documentation, meeting summaries, SOP development, and repurposing content.

We’re always looking for ways to reduce friction so our team can focus on high-value creative work. AI lets us scale efficiency without sacrificing quality.

Beyond the best-known tools, what is one AI tool that you would recommend to other design studios?

Krea.ai is a powerful platform worth exploring. It’s particularly strong for real-time image generation and concept development, giving creative teams the ability to rapidly visualise ideas without the overhead of traditional production workflows.

For studios exploring the intersection of motion, identity, and experimentation, it opens up new creative lanes, and it’s fast, flexible, and surprisingly fun to use.

The Kuzma Self-Playing Guitar System

They say it takes 10,000 hours to develop mastery, but Michael Kuzma may have pulled it off in 9,400 hours. That’s how long it took the guitarist and electrical engineer to develop his Kuzma Self-Playing Guitar System.

Kuzma’s invention, which can be fitted to any guitar, consists of 3D-printed parts, motors, belt drives, cable drives, actuators and picks. The device can both pick and fret, and while it can’t yet play Hendrix, it can do Oasis covers:

While it may rankle traditional street performers, Kuzma has used his invention for hands-off busking. And because his invention is technically a robot, it can of course do things no human can do. In this video he cranks it up to play 44 notes per second, far faster than us fleshbags can manage:

Kuzma custom-builds these for customers and has a waitlist. Since delivering his first unit in January of last year, he’s now up to seven. The price starts at $40,000, with the ultimate total depending on customizations, chosen base guitar and delivery location (Kuzma delivers the units himself).

Product Design Student’s Self-Project Leads to Massive Business Success

As a college sophomore, Angus Willows set himself an ambitious task: Design a better coat hanger. In Willows’ eyes, the incumbent objects were flimsy, disposable, and ill-suited for holding a wide variety of clothing items.

Willows got to work, and after gaining dual degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Design Innovation, perfected his design. The result is the Kangaroo Hanger:

The hangers are made from 100% recycled/recyclable ABS, and engineered to hold 25 lbs without breaking.

The dual lower bars allow it to hang different types of garments with a minimum of fiddling:

Willows started a company to launch the product in early 2024. Kangaroo Hangers were a massive hit, gaining tens of millions of views on TikTok and other platforms and racking up sales. Willows subsequently launched an Alloy version of the hanger made of both metal and sustainably-sourced Beech. Slightly heavier-duty, it will hold 30 lbs.

Today the Kangaroo Hanger is available at Target, Walmart and Costco. Not bad for a freshly-minted product designer!

Chelsea Who? J Balvin & the Latino Fans Owned the FIFA Club World Cup Final

If you only saw the final score of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup this year – Chelsea 3, Paris Saint-Germain 0 – you’d think the tournament ended like most European football matchups. But if you were actually there, standing outside the MetLife Stadium in the 104 degree heat, weaving through taqueros or even sitting through the phenomenal halftime show, then you would know the real stars weren’t just on the field. The real stars were actually the fans. The Latino fans.

Latino Fans Owned the FIFA Club World Cup Final

Look, there’s no doubt this year’s FIFA Club World Cup marked a seismic shift in the global world of futbol. This tournament was the first of its kind, held across the U.S. in a 32-team spectacle that tested the waters ahead of next year’s highly anticipated World Cup. On paper, the final was a classic Euro-elite showdown, with England’s Chelsea club teaming up against Paris Saint-Germain, who recently came off of their massive UEFA Champions League win in Europe (the first in the French club team’s history). But looking a little deeper, it was easy to see the heart of Latin America beating in the bleachers.

Perhaps the biggest personification of this was during halftime – which, who was expecting a halftime show for this? Not me, but I’m certainly not complaining. The Colombian king himself J Balvin eventually sauntered out to break up the event, bringing the house down with a short set that included some of his mega hits like “Mi Gente” and “Ay Vamos.” Balvin was quickly supplemented by rapper Doja Cat, and later Coldplay, who made a surprise appearance with their 2010s hit “A Sky Full of Stars.”

But we’re biased, so we’re going to say it was definitely Balvin who stole that halftime show, because nothing beats a good perreo – especially when you’re just watching a majority of white guys run back and forth kicking a ball for 90 minutes.

But in terms of the actual match, Chelsea took care of business early. Palmer’s goals came quick and sharp, while João Pedro added one more goal just before halftime, really blowing PSG’s chances out of the water. The French squad never recovered.

In the second half, frustration bubbled over. PSG midfielder João Neves yanked Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella by the hair and got himself sent off (yikes). Then, at the final whistle, cameras caught PSG coach Luis Enrique shoving João Pedro. It was messy. It was tense. You could even say it was a little bit telenovela…just how we Latinos like our futbol matches. Then of course, who could forget when President Donald Trump found his way into the mix of a celebratory Chelsea team … but we won’t get into that.

A Successful Test Run?

So inquiring minds want to know: all in all, was this a successful test run ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup? Maybe so. As a Miami native, I can say it certainly looked a lot better than the chaos that ensued at the Hard Rock Stadium for last year’s Copa America finale, where everyone and their mother tried to sneak in (yes, even through the vents) to get a shot at seeing Colombia and Argentina go head-to-head. But also, I get it – Shakira was headlining the halftime show that night.

And let’s be real, with the state of this country’s immigration crackdown, a lot of Latinos had anxiety about what security would look like heading to stadiums across the nation for this year’s tournament. But thankfully, no major reports reveal any of that took place, meaning it looks like FIFA leaned into their word to protect their fans.

So if FIFA wanted a trial run for 2026, they got their answer: it is possible to host the World Cup in the U.S. next year with virtually no major issues. But a lot can happen in a year.

What’s for certain is that for a lot of Latino families, especially in the U.S., futbol isn’t a trend or a TikTok moment, but a cultural connection. It’s shouting at a Telemundo commentator on Sunday mornings. It’s the joy (and anxiety) of a last-minute goal and the heartbreak of penalty kicks. It’s your tio talking about Messi like he raised him personally (and we should mention that Messi did in fact lead Inter Miami very far this tournament). 

So when FIFA decided to turn this tournament into a dry run for the World Cup, we didn’t need an invite. We were already right at home.

This was a final where fútbol met familia, and global sport finally admitted whose energy makes it spin.  The sport may come from Europe, but the heart? The soul? The ratings?

We witnessed everything from streetwear culture meeting brick construction to massive pirate ships that dominate entire rooms with their presence.

The variety was staggering, ranging from retro computing nostalgia to Mediterranean architecture that radiates vacation vibes, and functional mechanical devices that shouldn’t work but do. The builds beautifully captured the essence of what they represented, whether that was the charm of clay animation, the aesthetics of gaming hardware, or pre-electricity music reproduction. These ten creations stood out for their technical achievements and for how they transform plastic bricks into cultural touchstones that enhance any space with real artistic merit and conversation-worthy design excellence.

1. Nike Dunk x LEGO Set

Sneaker culture in LEGO form was bound to happen eventually, and this 1,180-piece Nike Dunk set gets it right. The blue and white colorway hits that classic vibe perfectly. What’s interesting is how they managed to capture the Dunk’s smooth lines using LEGO’s inherently angular pieces. You wouldn’t think it would work, but somehow it does.

The Nike Dunk has been through several waves of popularity, from basketball courts to streetwear icon status, and this build acknowledges that whole journey. The blue and white design sticks to one of the most popular colorways while making it accessible to kids who might be seeing this silhouette for the first time. There’s something smart about introducing younger builders to sneaker culture through LEGO. The rotatable basketball is a nice touch, even if it doesn’t bounce. That little minifigure wearing tiny Dunks is a perfect detail.

2. LEGO Arkham Asylum

Finally, a Batman set with some real presence. This 2,953-piece beast stands over 12 inches tall and actually looks like the kind of imposing institution that would house Gotham’s worst criminals. After years of smaller Batman builds that felt more like appetizers, LEGO delivered something with genuine architectural weight. The three-story modular design means you can rearrange sections however you want.

The prison cells actually open, walls come apart for easy access, and you can see clear sightlines throughout the whole structure. You can peer into different sections and set up your own scenes with all those villains they packed in. Speaking of which, 16 minifigures is no joke – that’s practically the entire rogues gallery. The transparent support pieces let you pose Batman swooping down from the roof or have characters floating mid-escape. Comic book action in three dimensions.

3. LEGO Hamilton Musical Set

Broadway in your living room, courtesy of a set including 2000 perfectly placed pieces. The character selection feels like opening night – Alexander Hamilton center stage in that green coat, the Schuyler sisters watching from the balcony, Aaron Burr lurking with perfect dramatic timing, and King George III looking appropriately royal and slightly unhinged. Each costume translates surprisingly well to minifigure scale while keeping the recognizable details from the actual show.

The rotating stage mechanism works, which still blows my mind. How do you capture theater magic in LEGO form? Apparently like this. The designer used some clever techniques with those Technic spotlights and the smooth tiles for the stage floor. The curved front base with the gold Hamilton star logo makes this feel like a proper collectible rather than just another licensed set. All those tiny accessories, quills, papers, and what looks like the Reynolds Pamphlet open up endless possibilities for recreating specific scenes.

4. LEGO Wallace & Gromit Set

Translating clay animation into rigid plastic seems impossible, but this collection pulls it off beautifully. Wallace’s grin, Gromit’s expressive eyebrows, Shaun’s woolly texture, Feathers McGraw’s cold stare – they all look right. The building techniques here create curves where LEGO usually gives you straight lines and angles. The color palette matches those warm, homey tones from the animations perfectly, avoiding those bright primary colors LEGO sometimes overdoes.

The articulation points mean these aren’t just static display pieces. Each character comes with its stand, giving you museum-quality presentation options. You can pose them in different positions, which adds so much more personality. The organic shapes prove LEGO can handle way more than just spaceships and castles when builders get creative.

5. LEGO Rubik’s Cube

A 2,216-piece Rubik’s cube that works as a puzzle? The engineering here is genuinely impressive. We’ve seen functional LEGO builds before, lawnmowers, cameras, rotary phones, but this might be the most precise one yet. This thing twists, turns, and scrambles just like a real Rubik’s cube, with that satisfying mechanical click when you rotate each face.

The internal mechanisms required to make this work smoothly are mind-boggling. Think about it – every face needs to rotate independently while maintaining the structural integrity of the entire cube. The precision required here goes way beyond typical LEGO building. This represents some seriously advanced engineering knowledge applied to children’s building blocks. You can solve it like a regular Rubik’s cube, which means it provides entertainment value alongside the impressive construction.

6. LEGO Black Pearl

This 4,590-piece Black Pearl makes every other pirate ship look like a toy boat. LEGO Ideas creator Tobnac submitted something that represents everything the original 2011 official set should have been. Where that version gave us 779 pieces and basic detailing, this delivers over 107 centimeters of legendary pirate ship that weighs nearly 5 kilograms. The scale difference tells the whole story.

The sophisticated rigging system captures what made the Black Pearl special – that sense of supernatural speed and otherworldly presence. Those countless black strings create the complex web of lines that any proper sailing ship needs. The black sails are represented through the rigging system rather than fabric, but they still suggest the Pearl’s mythical capabilities that made her “nigh uncatchable.”

7. LEGO Italian Riviera Set

Mediterranean vibes captured in 3,251 pieces of coastal perfection. This LEGO Ideas submission from Portland designer Alex Sahli shows real passion for Italian architecture and travel. The warm yellow and terracotta orange buildings scream authentic Riviera design, while the removable roofs reveal interiors packed with personality and detail.

The yellow building houses a diving equipment shop with that perfect turquoise scooter parked outside. The color contrast against those pastel walls just works. The orange building contains a seafood shop, but the real star is that gelato shop in the back with its tiny display case, scoops, and “Best Gelateria 2025” certificate hanging on the wall. You can practically smell the sea air and taste the pistachio gelato.

8. LEGO Alienware Area 51 Gaming Desktop

Gaming aesthetics in miniature form. This tiny recreation of the $4,499 Alienware Area 51 maintains all those distinctive design elements that make the original so recognizable. At roughly Mac Mini size – 5.3 inches long, 2.2 inches wide – it fits perfectly into existing gaming setups without taking over your desk.

The original Area 51 is loaded with advanced thermal systems and processing power for serious gaming and professional work. Most of us can’t afford that kind of hardware, making this LEGO version the perfect compromise. You get to appreciate the design without the massive financial commitment. Obviously, this one doesn’t actually compute anything, but the visual impact is surprisingly strong for such a small build. It captures that high-tech aesthetic that makes expensive gaming hardware so appealing. It is perfect for adding some geeky character to your workspace while staying within reasonable size limits.

9. LEGO Gramophone

Old-world charm meets LEGO mechanics in this hand-cranked beauty. Even at this smaller scale, it captures all the essential details that make you understand how these pre-electricity devices worked. You’d hand-crank to store energy, load the disc, add the needle, and let physics create the music through vibrations amplified by that horn.

The moving parts work here. You can load a disc, position the needle, and while there’s no spring motor, the hand-crank directly powers the turntable. The start/stop switch flips on and off, adding that tactile element that makes this feel like a real device rather than just a model. No actual music comes out, but it demonstrates the principles perfectly. This bridges the past and present through interactive design. It’s educational while being entertaining, perfect for music lovers who appreciate the engineering that came before our digital age.

10. LEGO Retro Computer

Computing nostalgia delivered through 2,286 pieces of late 80s authenticity. PovedaBricks created this set as a tribute to those chunky machines that introduced millions of us to personal computing. This isn’t modeled after any specific computer – it represents the generic beige boxes that defined an era when GUI interfaces were still new and exciting.

The multiple interchangeable screens show different interface elements from computing’s early days. That chunky CRT monitor sitting on top of the CPU, the wired keyboard and mouse (because wireless was still science fiction), the whole aesthetic that screams “serious computing machine.” Every detail reflects the technological limitations and design choices of that transformative period. The charm is in those authentic details that transport you back to computing’s awkward adolescence.

LEGO Evolution Continues

July proved that LEGO has evolved far beyond childhood toy territory into legitimate artistic expression. These ten builds represent more than impressive piece counts or clever engineering; they successfully capture cultural moments, celebrate design excellence, and push creative boundaries in ways that feel genuinely groundbreaking.

What impresses me the most is the range. A functional Rubik’s cube sits alongside Mediterranean architecture. Broadway theatrics share space with retro computing nostalgia. Streetwear culture meets maritime legends. The technical achievements here are impressive, but the real success lies in how these creations enhance spaces and spark conversations. They transform plastic bricks into cultural artifacts that feel both nostalgic and forward-thinking.

The Matthews Air Climber: Raises Heavy Loads 25 Feet Using an Air Compressor

Pipe Lighting, the German company that makes inflatable LED fixtures, has revolutionized the film production lighting game. The company’s lightweight offerings require minimal rigging compared to heavier predecessors, cutting down on production time and improving safety.

That said, plenty of production companies still own warehouses full of old-school heavy lighting gear, which they’ll continue to use to maximize their return on investment. And that’s given rise to relatively new objects like this Air Climber, by manufacturer Matthews Studio Equipment.

It’s essentially a heavy-duty telescoping stand on a wheeled base. Once positioned, the rigger lifts it off of its wheels using leveling jacks. A portable air compressor is then plugged into the unit, and with a light (or camera, or other piece of equipment) mounted on top, can be telescoped skywards pneumatically.

The pneumatic action not only takes care of the heavy lifting, but provides a safe, steady ascent and descent. (Competitor’s units are hand-cranked, meaning there’s a risk of runaway loads.)

The Air Climber is designed for situations where you’d normally use a crane or a cherry picker, but are limited by cost or space constraints. It can reach a height of 25 feet and support 200 lbs.

SpY presents ‘Cycles,’ a kinetic sculpture composed of nine steel rings that rotate on their axis at different speeds, creating a constantly changing visual ensemble. The rings, of different diameters, rest on top of each other in a delicate balance that suggests a stability as calculated as it is fragile. As they rotate, they change their appearance: what the eye perceives as a circle can become an ellipse, and vice versa, depending on the angle of view and the speed of rotation. Driven from its base by a mechanism that allows rotation in two directions, the installation unfolds a perpetual choreography: a continuous cycle that produces infinite patterns, in which the shapes collide visually and transform before the viewer’s eyes. In this process, figures that seemed stable become ambiguous, generating illusions that affect the audience’s perception.

Cycles sculpture encourages reconsideration of time as form

 

The constant rotation confuses the spatial reading of the rings and blurs the notions of rotation and depth. In Cycles, SpY uses movement and time as sculptural materials. These not only alter the perceived form but also directly affect understanding, causing a state of perceptual dislocation. The loss of spatial references prevents a stable image of the sculpture from being fixed, producing a sense of visual disorientation. Continuing his research into kinetic systems and geometries in motion, the artist explores perception and time as artistic tools, actively involving the audience in the experience of his works. Cycles invites us to rethink the sculptural form not as a finished object, but as a consequence of movement. It is a proposal that sculpts time and turns the gaze into an active, physical, and mental act.
