Cellexis is modular mobility system concept for connected cities

CELLEXIS is a groundbreaking public transportation concept that reimagines urban mobility for the cities of tomorrow. Conceived by designers Juhyeon Kwon, Seong Yeon Park, Rim Hohyun, Junhee Lee, and Youngwoo Cho, this project is a standout result of a 2024 industry-academic collaboration between NEXEN TIRE and the Korea Design Membership Plus (KDM+). The vision behind CELLEXIS is to bridge the gap between people, cities, and technology using a modular, intelligent transport system that is both practical and futuristic.

At first glance, CELLEXIS’ design immediately stands out due to its symmetrical, almost organic form. The vehicles are compact, with a unique, rounded structure that enables seamless movement in any direction and easy coupling between units. Each module can operate independently or as part of a larger connected fleet, typically in groups of six to eight, making it ideal for the dynamic needs of megacities. The fleet design allows users to move freely within the connected modules, reducing unnecessary transfers and getting passengers directly to their last-mile destinations.

A key innovation is the omni-directional wheel system. The wheels are engineered not only for smooth mobility but also as entry and exit points for passengers. The central area of each wheel doubles as a door, reinforcing CELLEXIS’ commitment to intuitive, barrier-free access for all users.

Inside, attention to passenger comfort is evident. Handles are precisely positioned to suit a wide range of heights, ensuring stable and comfortable journeys for everyone. The use of a central cylindrical display adds a layer of smart functionality, informing riders of their route, estimated time of arrival, and other essential details in real time. This thoughtful integration of digital information helps passengers feel confident and connected throughout their trip.

CELLEXIS is both a means of transportation and a flexible system that adapts to the way cities and people move. Yamazaki Home’s Magnetic Tape Dispenser

This slick little piece of steel is a magnetic-mount tape holder.

It can hold smaller-diameter tapes (like electrical) on the inner fins, and larger-diameter (duct, packing, blue) tapes on the outer fins.

The gap in the fins allows it to accommodate some dispensers.

It’s made for tape rolls that are up to 2″ wide.

It’s made by Japanese housewares brand Yamazaki Home and runs $20.

A 2×4-Sized Smartphone

Since their inception 18 years ago, the trend has been for smartphones to get bigger each year. But that’s only in two dimensions, width and height. Users want bigger screens, but what they don’t want is thicker phones.

This has led to many people carrying fragile and unwieldy glass rectangles that don’t survive drops well. In a recent study by Allstate, who offers protection plans for phones, they found that 93 million Americans damaged a smartphone within the 12-month survey period.

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Ulefone is bucking the thin-phone trend. Their new Armor 33 Pro is practically the width of a nominal 2×4, being 3.4″ wide and 1.3″ thick.

You won’t be keeping this in a pocket.

The rugged, waterproof phone offers standard smartphone bells and whistles, along with a secondary 3.4″ screen on the back.

And because it’s so thick, it packs a massive 25,500mAh battery inside, which they say will last for 10 days under heavy use, and nearly two months on standby.

It also features a gigantic 28mm speaker that puts out an ear-splitting 118 decibels. The company reckons the phone will appeal to outdoor users and those on construction sites; lost hikers can blare an alarm over greater distances, and hardhat wearers can hear the phone ring over the din of heavy machinery.

The phone is heavy. At 1.7 lbs, it weighs over four times as much as an iPhone 15.

The physical design reflects this calming philosophy perfectly. The concept shows a minimalist aquarium housed in a clear rectangular frame with soft, pastel-colored bases in blue or yellow. The aesthetic is deliberately architectural and serene, evoking the tranquil presence of a real fish tank on your desk or shelf.

What makes Reef particularly clever is how it bridges digital and physical interaction. The device includes tactile tools like a spoon for feeding virtual fish and a scraper for cleaning the tank when it gets murky. These physical elements make the experience tangible, turning screen time into something more mindful and intentional.

The gameplay mechanics are designed around positive reinforcement rather than restriction. Users collect new species by spending time away from screens, building emotional connections with their digital pets. The aquarium becomes cloudy if neglected for more than three days, requiring physical cleaning with the scraper tool. Fish can even faint if ignored too long, adding gentle accountability.

The mobile interface maintains the same calming aesthetic, with clean layouts, soft blue tones, and simple data visualizations. Users can track their digital detox progress through weekly reports and collection screens, but the focus remains on encouragement rather than judgment. The UI deliberately avoids the hyperactive design patterns that make most apps addictive.

What’s particularly thoughtful about this concept is how it acknowledges that complete digital abstinence isn’t realistic or even desirable for most people. Instead, Reef helps users develop a healthier rhythm, creating natural breaks and moments of presence throughout their day. The aquarium becomes a visual reminder to pause and breathe.

Reef represents a growing trend toward empathetic technology design, where digital tools actually support human wellbeing rather than exploit attention. While this remains a concept rather than a real product, it points toward a future where our devices might help us find balance instead of constantly demanding our focus. Sometimes the most innovative ideas are the ones that help us step away.

Diamanti Bridge debuts modular, 3D-printed design in Venice

 

Presented as part of the Time, Space, Existence exhibition organized by the European Cultural Centre (ECC) in Venice, the Diamanti bridge is the result of a multi-institutional collaboration led by Professor Dr. Masoud Akbarzadeh and his team at the Polyhedral Structures Laboratory (University of Pennsylvania).

 

Fabricated by Dutch firm Vertico, the bridge is composed of nine prefabricated concrete segments, each 3D printed using a robotic arm and a two-component cementitious mix developed by Swiss construction chemicals company Sika. The geometry of each segment includes voids and surface articulation that support structural performance and enhance sustainability metrics by lowering embodied carbon. These segments are held together by eight ungrouted steel cables, forming a post-tensioned system that is both fully functional and reversible. No adhesives or grout are used in the connections, making the bridge entirely demountable and recyclable.

 

The project explores the future of construction through computational geometry, modularity, and additive manufacturing. Engineered around funicular logic and fabricated through robotic 3D concrete printing, the 2.5-meter-long bridge model offers a glimpse into how architectural spans can evolve toward material efficiency and demountable systems.

Concrete Construction Using Polyhedral Forms

 

Drawing on the design method of Polyhedral Graphic Statics (PGS), the Diamanti project channels compressive and tensile forces through a polyhedral form optimized for performance with minimal material. The geometry of the structure is shaped by force flow and fabrication constraints and integrates anticlastic diamond surfaces that stiffen the segments, distribute loads, and reduce concrete usage without sacrificing integrity.

 

While the version on display at the seventh edition of ECC’s Time Space Existence in Venice spans 2.5 meters with a slim 26 cm depth, the design led by Professor Dr. Masoud Akbarzadeh has been successfully tested at a full 9-meter span, underlining its scalability. The underlying concept proposes a rethink of how construction systems can reduce reliance on massive reinforcement, cut material waste, and favor ease of disassembly. The Polyhedral Structures Laboratory team integrates computational design with innovative material systems, questioning the concrete–timber hierarchy. In a reversal of typical load-bearing roles, the longer-span Diamanti canopy rests on a cross-laminated timber (CLT) platform rather than concrete.

The Diamanti bridge reflects a systems-based approach that links academic research with industrial application. Each phase of the project was carried out through a network of collaborators. Sika Group developed a customized cementitious mix tailored for robotic extrusion. Carsey 3D managed the logistics of fabrication and assembly, while post-tensioning expertise was provided by AEVIA. Structural modeling and analysis were conducted independently by researchers at City College of New York and Villanova University, and physical load testing took place at the CERIB institute in France.

 

Diamanti should be understood as a working prototype, a testbed for modular construction methods that focus on material efficiency, reversibility, and low-carbon performance. Its design is driven by a logic of force distribution, demonstrating how structural performance, ease of assembly, and future disassembly can be integrated within a single prefabricated system.

Meet the Wheelie Fun Bike V1, a mini and modular electric pit two-wheeler with a button that lets riders raise the front wheel and cruise only on the rear tire. There are two wheelie-assist modes built into the hardware. The first is the Push To Wheelie, whereby pressing and holding the button on the handlebar, the front wheel of the bike goes in the air to a preset angle. Riders can lean forward to speed up and lean backward to slow down, and the onboard sensors monitor the bike’s position and stop it from flipping backward.

 

The second mode is the Digital Wheelie Bar. In this mode, the rider uses the throttle to lift the front wheel. Electronic stabilization helps keep balance, and an anti-loop feature prevents the bike from rotating too far. This system helps new riders learn how to perform manual wheelies safely, and then if they’re adventurous enough, they can switch to the Push To Wheelie mode. There’s also an extra setting called Wheel Lift Resistance that lets riders prevent the front wheel from lifting. This is useful for people who prefer traditional riding or straight launches.

The Wheelie Fun Bike V1 is also modular, meaning that the riders can change or upgrade different parts, including the lights, batteries, and seating. The seat is angled in a way that supports wheelie riding, while the layout is designed for stability and balance during long wheelies. The team has also designed a companion app so the riders can control the wheelie electric fun bike’s systems.

 

On here, riders can view a dashboard with live data, including speed, power levels, and alerts, as well as ride modes that adjust power usage, range, and comfort. Users can tune how the throttle and brake respond, and they can also control the wheelie angle, anti-looping sensitivity, and other parameters. The app includes social features, such as leaderboards for longest wheelie and distance traveled.

Founders Edition gearing up for a january 2026 release

 

Specs-wise, the electric fun bike with a wheelie button can reach speeds of over 35 miles per hour. The standard range is over 30 miles (about 48 kilometers), but users can double that distance by installing an optional extended battery. The bike uses a 10 amp-hour, 72-volt battery, with a maximum voltage of 84 volts (a larger battery with approximately 20 amp-hours is set to be released later). 

 

The electric motor produces peak power above 5,000 watts, with a six-inch high-torque hub motor. The frame is a custom tube design built to support full front and rear suspension. The front braking system uses a disc brake, while the rear includes an adjustable regenerative brake that helps recharge the battery during braking. So far, the team says that the Founders Edition for the electric fun bike with a wheelie button is expected to ship in January 2026.

Designers welcome crackdown on “unfair and exhausting” late payments

The UK government has vowed to tackle “the scourge of late payments once and for all.”

In its Plan for Change for Small and Medium Sized Businesses published last week, it said late payments cost the UK economy £11 billion every year, and the issue shuts down 38 businesses every day.

Now the government is planning new legislation to stamp out late payments. “Too many hardworking people are being forced to spend precious hours chasing payments instead of doing what they do best – growing their businesses,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.

“It’s unfair, it’s exhausting, and it’s holding Britain back. So, our message is clear: it’s time to pay up.”

The proposed new rules will:

Introduce maximum payment terms for invoices. These will be set at 60 days initially, coming down to 45 days in time.
Make interest on late invoices mandatory.
Give the Small Business Commissioner (SBC) more powers to speed up disputes and fine companies which are repeat offenders, as well as name and shame them.
Compel big companies to report on average payment terms, and review their policies at board level.

According to the report, “This will be the most significant legislation to tackle late payments in over 25 years and will give the UK the strongest legal framework on late payments in the G7.”

A welcome change, but questions remain

The new rules are designed to support businesses with fewer than 250 employees, which covers the vast majority of design studios and agencies.

“The Small Business Plan is a welcome signal of support for the backbone of the design economy; our SMEs, micro-businesses and freelancers,” says Shamir Hale, senior policy and advocacy manager at the Design Council.

“From tackling late payments to improving access to finance, these pro-small business measures will make a real difference to the designers powering our economy.”

Writing on LinkedIn, designer Dominic Martin–Manning pointed out how late payments “can have a significant impact on whether we survive, or end up on the scrap heap.” He said he hoped the new laws would “help alleviate some of those fears.”

“Stricter rules – and the risk of penalties – will hopefully change mindsets and improve respectful practices.”

This enthusiasm was echoed by those who represent freelancers, for whom the challenge of late payments is often especially hard to navigate.

According to Leapers, an organisation which supports freelancers’ mental health, 72% of freelancers had to chase late invoices last year.

“The proposed changes to tackle late payments are very much welcomed, as too many freelancers face this issue regularly, with tangible negative impact on both finances and mental health,” says Leapers founder Matthew Knight.

“I’m especially glad to see the SBC have more powers to investigate and fine persistent late payers, more transparency around bad behaviours, and increased penalties. The end of 60+ day payment terms is also fantastic.

“Stricter rules – and the risk of penalties – will hopefully change mindsets and improve respectful practices,” he adds.

But Knight did raise some questions about the details of the proposals. He pointed out that many late payers are themselves companies with fewer than 250 employees, and so would not be subject to the increased scrutiny laid out in the plan.

He also pointed out that while mandatory interest on overdue invoices is positive, it would still be down to those owed money “to chase and chase” for this extra payment.

“For some hirers, could it put them off using freelancers, rather than sorting out their internal processes?” Knight asks. “Could also end up being seen as an additional cost of business, and cost be passed on to suppliers or customers?”

The backbone of the UK economy

Small and medium-sized businesses, or SMEs, make up 99.8% of the UK’s business landscape. They employ 16.6 million people, 60% of the total UK workforce. According to estimates from the Department for Business and Trade, around 80% of SMEs are micro businesses, with one to nine employees.

But SMEs are struggling – in 2023, only 40% reported an increase in turnover, which was down 6% from 2022.

The proposals are part of the Government’s wider efforts to kickstart the UK’s economic growth. “Through our Plan for Change, we will make the UK the best place to start and grow a business,” the plan states.

“You are not just businesses – you are the nation’s dreamers and doers, innovators, the beating heart of communities, and the backbone of the economy.

“But for too long, the odds have been against you, as previous governments let problems stack up – leaving businesses dealing with endless red tape, struggling to access finance and navigating additional trade barriers.”

Alongside the late payments legislation, the plan pledges to cut the administrative costs of running a business by 25%, make tax easier to navigate with the help of AI, help SMEs bring down their energy costs, and provide £4 billion in extra finance, including 69,000 start-up loans, “to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs and small business owners.”

The Government has opened a public consultation on the plans, and Knight urges freelancers and small business owners to make sure their voices are heard.

“They should absolutely read the proposals and provide input into the public consultation, which runs until October,” he says.

GPD WIN 5 Brings A Bold Redesign That Challenges Handheld Gaming Norms

The handheld gaming PC market has exploded over the past few years, with everyone from Valve to ASUS jumping into the fray. With so many options flooding the market, manufacturers face intense pressure to stand out from the crowd. But sometimes innovation for innovation’s sake isn’t always the smartest move.

GPD’s upcoming offering, the WIN 5, seems determined to make a very bold statement about what a gaming handheld should be. The company is promising desktop-class performance with AMD’s flagship Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 processor, but these gains come with some pretty significant compromises that might leave longtime fans scratching their heads.

Gone is the signature slider mechanism that revealed a full QWERTY keyboard underneath the display. Since the original clamshell WIN 1 and WIN 2, through the slider-based WIN 3 and WIN 4, that built-in keyboard has been the defining feature of the GPD WIN series. It’s what separated these devices from pure gaming handhelds.

The WIN 5 ditches this entirely, opting instead for a streamlined, controller-focused design that looks more like a Steam Deck competitor than a pocket computer. It’s a dramatic shift that fundamentally changes what the GPD WIN brand represents, and not everyone will appreciate losing that productivity element.

Perhaps even more controversial is the battery situation. There’s apparently no internal battery inside the GPD WIN 5 at all, making the device lighter and thinner while potentially helping with thermal management. The consequence is that you either need to keep it plugged into the wall or attach the official external battery pack.

That 5,170mAh battery pack clips onto the back using a proprietary connector and movable clips. While this modular approach has some appeal, the battery partially blocks the device’s airflow and twin cooling fans, except through a small gap between the back of the GPD WIN 5 and the battery block. This seems counterproductive when you’re trying to cool a high-performance processor that can hit 70 watts under load.

The design decisions feel like they’re pulling in different directions. On one hand, removing the internal battery and keyboard creates a sleeker, more gaming-focused device. On the other hand, the external battery makes the whole package bulkier and less portable than traditional handhelds when you actually want to game on the go.

These choices could make the GPD WIN 5 significantly less appealing to existing GPD fans who valued the series for its unique blend of gaming and productivity features. The removable SSD tray is a nice touch, working almost like a microSD card slot for quick storage swaps, but it doesn’t offset the other compromises.

We’re still waiting for final details and real-world testing to see how these design decisions play out in practice. The GPD WIN 5 might represent the future of high-performance handheld gaming, or it could serve as a cautionary tale about changing too much too quickly. Either way, GPD is certainly making waves in an increasingly crowded market.
