Innovative Narrow Home Maximizes Small Lot Living

Most architects faced with a 16-square-meter building plot would probably walk away. Ana Rocha Architecture saw it as the perfect challenge. Their Slim Fit House in the Netherlands transforms what appears to be a sliver of leftover urban space into a genuinely livable three-story home, delivering 50 square meters of actual living space.

The whole thing started as an answer to urban crowding in Almere Poort. Rocha faced the challenge of fitting more homes into limited space and decided to build up instead of out. The result is this slender wooden tower that delivers real functionality. Walk past it on the street and you might mistake it for a piece of modern sculpture, but step inside and you’ll find every inch working overtime.

Yurameki Table Lamp Transforms Light Into Living Art

Static lighting feels increasingly outdated in our quest for homes that respond and adapt to our moods. We want objects that do more than just illuminate, pieces that create atmosphere and invite genuine interaction. The Yurameki Table Lamp by Jingwen Gu transforms this desire into tangible reality.

Red Rock is a newly built residence by Faulkner Architects, located in Summerlin, Nevada, on the edge of the Mojave Desert. Set between the Las Vegas city skyline and the sandstone formations of Red Rock Canyon, the house is shaped by the region’s demanding climate — dry winters, intense summer heat, high winds, and seasonal monsoons. The architecture is informed by these conditions, along with the client’s need for privacy and durability.

Located on a three-quarter-acre site, Faulkner Architects’ Red Rock residence contends with the Mojave Desert’s extreme climate, which sees high summer temperatures, monsoon rains, and constant winds. The design team shows a deliberate and controlled response to this context. The structure is oriented to minimize solar exposure and create privacy while maintaining visual access to the city and canyon beyond. A subtractive process in the plan carves out a sheltered courtyard to the east and introduces a raised reflecting basin that mirrors the living space in scale.

 

Leading toward interiors designed by Concept Lighting Lab, the entry is calibrated and sequential. Visitors pass through a tight vertical opening in the board-formed concrete perimeter wall, arriving at a shaded ramp that leads to a private court. At eye level with the basin’s surface, this moment compresses and frames the transition from the desert exterior to the interior architecture.

The Red Rock structure is composed of locally-sourced sand, gravel, and fly ash concrete, which is mixed on-site and cast in place by the team led by Faulkner Architects. The result is a pale buff surface that visually connects to the surrounding geology. Exposed in both floor and wall surfaces, the concrete absorbs and modulates the desert’s thermal fluctuations. Over half of the 8,500-square-foot residence is built into the earth, where passive cooling and daylighting strategies allow the home to remain breezy and energy efficient.

 

Above ground, living areas and bedrooms occupy structures articulated in weathering steel. A perforated screen system shields the interiors from direct sun and wind while allowing filtered light and airflow. This layered strategy is expressed as a heavy mass below, and a lightweight envelope above.

 

The house maintains a low profile across the landscape. Its elongated geometry aligns with the east-west axis, situating the pool and shaded deck to receive directional breezes and controlling solar gain. The cantilevered steel framework shelters the upper level and cars beneath, extending outward to echo the silhouette of Red Rock Canyon.

Industrial Design Case Study: An Experimental “Café Classroom”

Your average classroom space hasn’t changed much in the past 100 years: They’re a factory-like row of desks facing an instructor writing on a large rectangle. London-based ID firm Pearson Lloyd wondered: With all of the changes in technology and society, isn’t it time that spaces for learning evolved? The firm partnered with the Trent Institute for Learning and Teaching (TILT) at Nottingham Trent University and UK-based furniture brand Senator to conduct the following design exploration.

Next-generation learning and work

Drawing on synthesised insights from 2 years of primary research into global pedagogy trends, CoLab is the outcome of Pearson Lloyd’s intensive project with Senator exploring emerging higher-education models and changing approaches to work.

In collaboration with the Trent Institute for Learning and Teaching (TILT) at Nottingham Trent University, Pearson Lloyd identified the need for an informal, multi-modal and multi-posture tech-enabled learning space that we referred to as the ‘café classroom’. This new environment enabled by CoLab can be used for both formal learning and informal peer-to-peer collaboration, without the need to reconfigure the space. This leads to a greater efficiency in the use of space and the ability to activate redundant classrooms.

By creating multiple relaxed and informal learning environments – creative hubs, quiet nooks, social labs, team touchdowns – it expands the classroom beyond the conventional siloed four walls, into the café, library, atrium, corridor, or common room to encourage students and teachers to engage in open discussion and collaboration after more conventional and formal teaching.

Durable, repairable and recyclable

CoLab is constructed to combine the robustness and durability needed for everyday use, while maintaining the warm, welcoming aesthetic and engaging tactility of hospitality furniture.

CoLab is designed in accordance with circular design principles, ensuring each component product in the system can be easily repaired. Exposed fixings promote ease of assembly, and simple on-site part replacement. Because no composite materials are used, any parts that do reach end-of-life can be recycled.

Torre Modular Ceramic Vase Turns Pottery Into Playful Sculpture

Unitree A2 Stellar Explorer robot performs back flips, can carry a fully grown human

Boston Dynamics has triggered a race for building useful humanoid robots, with Spot the dog robot being their most successful creation. Open source Hengbot Sirus and Hiwonder’s Raspberry Pi-powered PuppyPi are prime examples of how the robotic dog arena is shaping up. Even the tiny Petoi Bittle X proves robotic dogs are here to stay if you don’t want the nuances of a real puppy. Unitree also has its own version of a four-legged bot in the shape of Go2. They’ve also upped their game with robots like the B2 and R1 humanoid.

Now the Chinese robotics company has stunned the tech world with A2 Stellar Explorer, which is a robot dog built for tough terrain missions and stellar jobs. Having a dry weight of 81 lbs, the A2 robot is quite agile and can carry a stationary load of 55 lbs, even on inclines. When stationary, the robot dog can handle a weight of 220 lbs, which is demonstrated in a recently released video where a person is standing on the poor pet. It can even perform complex stunts like front flips, jumps, and hold the weight of an adult riding on optional four wheels. Wow, that’s like riding a personal dog skateboard to the amazement of onlookers.

Hauling a sizable load for around 12 km before requiring a recharge is a normal day’s work for this robotic dog. Just to get a fair idea of what the A2 is capable of, well, it can run for 5 hours when unloaded, or for 3 hours with a load on. When running, it can achieve a top speed of 11.2 mph, which is impressive. Steep climbs, 1-meter-high obstacles, and steps measuring 30 cm high are no worry for the four-legged robot, given it has a torque delivery of 180Nm. That’s possible courtesy the 9,000 mAh battery pack, which is hot swappable if you want the dog to keep going 24×7. At the end of the day, the bot is a machine, so it employs a dual LiDAR system (on the front and rear) to keep tabs on its real-time environment. To navigate complex terrain autonomously, a front camera and AI-powered vision system are used.

To take care of all the complex computing required for the fancy movements and actions, the four-legged robot is equipped with an Intel Core i7 processor.
