This Damascus + Sandalwood Pocket Knife has a gorgeous split-handle opening mechanism

There are some EDC knives designed to be performers, there are some designed to look intimidating, there are also some designed to channel ‘gentlemanly minimalism’, but sometimes knifemakers make knives a certain way because they can. In certain times, looking stunning is enough of a design brief – and this particular number from SDOKEDC falls within that category.

With a VG10 Damascus Steel blade and a Yellow Sandalwood handle, this knife already hits the right spots when it comes to elite material selection – but that isn’t all. The knife’s split-handle design has one of the most mesmerizing opening mechanisms ever. Rather than a simple flipper or an out-the-front (OTF) switchblade, this one disassembles first, before reassembling into an open knife. The handle’s clever linkage system allows it to morph between being an ergonomic grip when open, and a nifty sheath when closed.

This knife isn’t the kind you carry as a tactical companion. It isn’t even the knife you consider indispensable because of all its extra integrated tools – the Split Handle Damascus Knife is the kind you keep for the fact that it uplifts the idea of a knife to something virtually jewel-like. Damascus Steel, for the uninitiated, is a gorgeous marbled metal made of two (sometimes three) types of steel that are forged together, before being acid-etched to reveal the different steels folded into one another. The name comes from the fact that it first originated in Damascus (Syria), but was lost somewhere in the pages of history. The steel we call Damascus Steel today is merely a tribute to that original style (people still don’t know how it was made), but it’s still preferred by EDC collectors and enthusiasts for the level of artistry that goes into meticulously folding different steels together in a forge.

The blade in question is a standard drop-point with a curved belly, but the Damascus pattern adds a world of charm. The handle’s unique shape gives the entire knife a gorgeously rustic silhouette, and I’m fairly certain this knife works as good as it looks, cleanly cutting through objects, while also piercing, carving, slicing, whittling, scraping, etc.

The handle uses one of the highest-quality woods too, opting for the rare Sandalwood rather than something a little more run-of-the-mill. Sandalwood isn’t the kind of wood you’d find in EDC. Depending on where (and how) it’s sourced, Sandalwood can get expensive, and at least where I come from (India), it’s so regulated as a plant that it’s illegal to sell through private channels. The Split-Handle Damascus Knife’s choice of Sandalwood feels premium at best, but its $33 price tag indicates that the knifemaker chose to make this EDC accessible rather than overtly out of reach. To that end, the sandalwood used here is a medium-grade yellow sandalwood variant, which doesn’t possess the aromats and essential oils found in more expensive Red or Indian Sandalwoods.

The joy, however, is in the interaction of opening and closing the knife. The split handle design, truth be told, isn’t new (there’s a similar one made by YouTuber Koss Knives), but it certainly hasn’t been explored or exploited as much as it should. The interaction is simply addictive, and it’s something your eyes end up falling in love with, along with your hands. The unique format also turns the handle into a sheath for the blade, making it fairly functional.

The use of Damascus Steel and Sandalwood means every single knife is unique. Each blade has its own unique Damascus Steel marbling, while the wood grain on the handle is unique to every piece too, which makes each knife about as distinctive as a fingerprint. Each knife measures 5.74 inches when closed, and a whopping 7.28 inches when open. The knife weighs 120 grams (4.32 ounces), and is ambidextrous, although it desperately lacks a pocket clip or lanyard hole for easy carry. However, to account for that, each $33 knife comes with its own leather sheath, giving you a classically rustic way to carry your gorgeously ornamental EDC around with you!

DesignHex conceives whimsical Papa Don’t Preach store in Delhi

 

Located in Delhi’s Dhan Mill compound, India, the new flagship store for fashion label Papa Don’t Preach has been designed by Shimona Bhansali of DesignHex. The project presents a spatial interpretation of the brand’s visual identity through a blend of materiality, sculptural form, and narrative-driven detailing.

 

The store’s facade draws inspiration from folkloric underwater landscapes, with sculpted sea creatures and organic plant forms embedded into two tonnes of hand-carved natural wood. CNC-cut elements and high-relief panels combine to create a textured, layered surface. Sage green and lavender pigments reflect daylight to produce a subtle iridescence. Completed within 60 days, the exterior sets the tone for the interior spatial sequence.

Inside, the space maintains visual continuity with the brand’s Mumbai outlet, applying a palette of soft pinks and blush tones across structural and surface elements. Studio DesignHex reinterprets existing columns as tree-like forms, their branches extending toward the ceiling in a gesture of organic support and creative growth. These sculptural components are coated in textured pink paint, contributing to both visual cohesion and material richness.

 

The flooring introduces variation through a patchwork of pink and white marble, punctuated by areas of micro-concrete. This combination establishes a tactile contrast while preserving the chromatic consistency of the interior. Large windows introduce natural light into the store, producing changing patterns of illumination throughout the day and enhancing the reflective and textured surfaces.

This Modern Lake House Is Inspired By Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian Vision

Something spectacular is brewing on the shores of Milford, Pennsylvania, where Specht Novak Architects has created a house that feels like it’s been waiting there forever. The Log Tavern Pond House sprawls across 1.82 acres of rural land near the Poconos, sitting on what used to be a summer camp that closed back in the early 1960s. At 3,356 square feet, this isn’t a massive house, but it makes every inch count by borrowing heavily from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian principles that once defined how Americans thought about home.

Walking around the neighborhood, you’ll spot plenty of mid-century houses that draw from Wright’s playbook. Specht Novak didn’t fight this context—they embraced it completely. The result is a house that nods respectfully to its architectural ancestors while feeling completely current. You get those signature long, low lines that Wright loved, paired with natural materials that will only get better with age. The charred shou sugi ban wood siding creates this striking contrast with smooth stucco surfaces, making the whole composition feel both dramatic and perfectly restrained.

Here’s where things get interesting: this house has two completely different personalities depending on which side you’re approaching from. Face the street and you’re greeted by a deep, cantilevered porch that feels welcoming but maintains an air of privacy. Those narrow ribbon windows give just enough glimpse inside to intrigue without revealing everything. Walk around to the lakeside, and suddenly the house opens up completely. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls frame the water like you’re living inside a painting, with seasonal changes providing endless entertainment right outside your windows.

The second level adds another layer to this lakeside experience. There’s an outdoor spa tucked onto the terrace that extends your living space right into nature. You can soak while watching morning mist rise off the water or catch sunset reflections from this elevated perch. The whole setup creates this perfect balance between public and private moments—sometimes you want to be seen, sometimes you want to disappear.

Specht Novak brought together a solid team for this project: Schoenagel & Schoenagel handled the structural work, Joybeck Custom Builders made it all real, and Chris Cooper captured those moody photographs that make you want to pack your bags immediately. The architects talk about creating an “architectural threshold” between the public world and natural serenity, which sounds fancy but really just means they figured out how to give you options. Some days you want to engage with the world, other days you want to hide away with a book and a cup of coffee.

This home doesnt copy Wright’s famous houses; plenty of architects have tried that with mixed results. Instead, Specht Novak understood the underlying ideas that made those original Usonian houses so compelling and applied them to contemporary lakeside living. The result feels both familiar and surprising, like reconnecting with an old friend who’s learned some new tricks. So, what do you do when you don’t know what to make from the ingredients you have? If you had the Kitchen Cosmo, you could just place all the ingredients you had in front of it, and it would print you the ideal recipe you can make. An ideal kitchen gadget for improvisation, you say. Yes, but you can’t own it.

When the established industry names and the innovative startups are focused on creating AI-based kitchen technologies with high-definition displays and voice controls to automate tasking and optimize our efficiency in the kitchen; the Kitchen Cosmo, built at MIT, looks at the past for its inspiration, while integrating AI to make inconsistency in cooking its printable motive.

To that accord, Kitchen Cosmo, in its deep red body is an AI-powered cooking device, which generates recipes from ingredients you place in front of it. It draws its inspiration from the Honeywell Kitchen Computer, which promised to bring computing to the domestic sphere, but never really kicked off. The Cosmo, brainchild of designers C Jacob Payne and Ayah Mahmoud (developed in the MIT course ‘Interaction Intelligence,’) looks to be on the right path, since it intends to solve the everyday kitchen dilemma of “what should I cook” into a simple task, without the hanky-panky display or voice. The interface of the device is retro futuristic with knobs and sliders – all tactile controls onboard.

So, place the items you have on the platter in front of the Cosmo, tune it to your preference using the six analog inputs: mood, time, dietary needs, and more, and Cosmo prints you the possible, personalized recipe right there and then. To make this possible, Cosmo uses GPT-4o, capable of processing both images and text in real time. For the processing, a webcam acts as its eyes to identify the ingredients, while a “single API call” translates this into a recipe, which is then printed by the built-in thermal printer.

The Psychology of the “Fart Zone”: Why Airbus’s Double-Decker Plane Seats Trigger Our Deepest Fears

The immediate and visceral public reaction to this concept tells us everything about human psychology and spatial relationships. Critics instantly dubbed the lower level the “fart zone,” and this nickname has stuck with remarkable persistence across social media platforms. This isn’t just juvenile humor – it’s a genuine psychological response to perceived vulnerability and proximity to bodily functions.

Even with barriers and careful engineering, our primal brain immediately recognizes this as a compromising position. Humans have deep-seated psychological aversions to being placed in positions where they feel exposed to others’ bodily functions, regardless of actual risk.

Psychological Hierarchy and Power Dynamics

From a behavioral psychology standpoint, the double-decker design creates an uncomfortable power dynamic that mirrors social hierarchies. The person on top literally has the “upper hand” – they can see more, move more freely, and psychologically dominate the space. Meanwhile, the bottom passenger experiences what researchers call “subordinate positioning” – they’re literally looking up at someone else’s body.

This positioning triggers subconscious feelings of inferiority and vulnerability. Research on seating psychology shows that elevation affects our sense of control and comfort. When you’re seated below someone else, especially in close proximity, it can create anxiety and a sense of being trapped or dominated.

Claustrophobia and Spatial Anxiety

Looking at the second image showing the bottom-level perspective, you can immediately see how confined and cave-like the space appears. The person above essentially becomes a “human ceiling,” which psychologically feels much more oppressive than an inanimate aircraft structure.

Design Flaws from a Human Factors Perspective

From a pure design standpoint, this concept violates several fundamental principles of human comfort and ergonomics:

Visual Connection: Passengers need visual connection to the broader cabin environment for psychological comfort. The bottom-level passengers are visually isolated, which can increase anxiety and feelings of confinement.

Personal Bubble Violation: The design forces an intimate proximity between strangers that violates cultural norms about personal space. Even in cultures with smaller personal space expectations, having someone’s posterior directly above your head crosses universal boundaries.

Movement Restrictions: Bottom passengers appear to have limited ability to stand, stretch, or change positions – all crucial for both physical and psychological well-being during long flights.

The Visceral “Fart Zone” Phenomenon and Psychological Hierarchy

The speed and intensity with which people rejected this concept online reveals something profound about collective psychological responses to design. The “fart zone” nickname didn’t emerge from careful analysis – it was an immediate, gut-level reaction that thousands of people shared simultaneously. This suggests the design triggers what psychologists call “disgust response” – an evolved mechanism that helps us avoid potentially harmful or unpleasant situations. Even though the actual risk of exposure to unpleasant odors might be minimal with proper ventilation, our brains can’t override the visual and spatial cues that scream “avoid this situation.”

Beyond the obvious concerns about bodily functions, the reaction to this seating arrangement reflects broader cultural anxieties about class, dignity, and social positioning. Being relegated to the “bottom” carries symbolic weight beyond just physical positioning – it suggests a lower tier of service, reduced status, and compromised dignity. We’re hardwired to associate “higher” with “better” across virtually all cultures, making these hierarchical metaphors uncomfortably literal.

What really strikes me about this design is how it taps into something almost primal in our psychology. Being positioned directly underneath another person’s body, especially their rear end, triggers deep-seated fears about contamination, dominance, and vulnerability that probably go back to our evolutionary past. We’re hardwired to avoid situations where we might be exposed to others’ waste or bodily functions, and this seating arrangement visually suggests exactly that scenario, even if modern engineering would prevent it.

Our rational mind might understand that proper ventilation and barriers would address practical concerns, but our emotional brain sees “person’s butt above my head” and immediately rejects the entire concept. The designer Alejandro Núñez Vicente has had to repeatedly defend his creation, suggesting even he didn’t fully anticipate the psychological impact of the positioning. His focus was primarily on maximizing legroom and space efficiency, but he underestimated the powerful psychological factors at play.

Alternative Design Approaches

What’s particularly striking is how small design modifications could potentially address many of these psychological concerns. Better visual barriers, improved privacy screens, or even just rotating the seats 90 degrees could dramatically change the psychological dynamic while maintaining the space-saving benefits.

The fact that Airbus is apparently still exploring this concept suggests there might be ways to engineer around the psychological barriers, but it would require a much more sophisticated understanding of human comfort psychology than the current iteration demonstrates.

This whole controversy perfectly illustrates how good design must consider not just physical constraints and engineering challenges, but the deep psychological needs and cultural expectations of users. Sometimes the most logical space-saving solution can be completely undermined by factors that exist purely in our minds – but those mental factors are just as real and important as any physical design constraint.

The “Chaise Longue” serves as a perfect case study in how even well-intentioned innovation can backfire spectacularly when it ignores the complex psychological landscape of human behavior and social norms.

For the first time, Bentley Motors brings the Mulliner-recreated 1939 Mark V Corniche to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California for the Monterey Car Week 2025. Between August 14th and 17th, the vehicle, which was revived and unveiled by the design teams in 2019 80 years after it was first created in 1939, makes its debut at the automobile show and takes part in the Tour d’Elegance. It’s a meaningful remembrance for the car manufacturer because the model set standards for some of its iconic models later on. 

 

In 1939, Bentley revealed the Mark V Corniche as a means to study the streamlined body shapes and aerodynamics for its future car models. But during the Second World War, the vehicle’s original body was destroyed and lost to history. Fortunately, the founding chassis was rediscovered 31 years ago, and Bentley and Mulliner set out to recreate the original components and coachwork of the 1939 Mark V Corniche based on the model’s original drawings. The recreation project began in 2018, and a year later, it was unveiled in time for Bentley’s centenary in 2019. In 2025, the car manufacturer brings the vehicle for the first time to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California, allowing the attendees to see and go through the history and original components of the model.

The Mark V Corniche that Bentley built in 1939 was a high-performance version of the car manufacturer’s MkV saloon. It was treated as a platform to test new ideas in speed, handling, and aerodynamics, with its styling based on the principle of streamlining to reduce air resistance while driving. The bodywork was created by French coachbuilder Carrosserie Vanvooren from designs by Georges Paulin, and the car had a lightweight chassis made from thinner steel than a standard one, a tuned MkV engine, and an overdrive gearbox. During its time, the vehicle’s pillarless body design and curves were considered innovative. The first Bentley Mark V Corniche was tested at Brooklands in 1939 and reached speeds over 100 mph. 

 

It then went to France for further road testing, but in August 1939, the car was damaged in an accident and sent for repairs. The chassis was shipped back to the UK, but the body was destroyed in a bombing raid on Dieppe later that year. Fast forward to 2001, automotive historian Ken Lea began a project to rebuild the Corniche using original parts, but the progress was slow because of the funding issues, that is until Bentley Motors took over the project in 2018. The company’s Mulliner division, known for building custom cars, led the project. This was Mulliner’s first historic car restoration, and the rebuild used original mechanical components wherever possible, with a newly made body identical to the 1939 version.

For the recreated model, the body panels were hand-formed, and the paint laboratory replicated the Imperial Maroon and Heather Grey color scheme. The interior team made seats and trims from period-correct materials, with the Mulliner carpenters using a steam booth to bend wood for the window surrounds. The grille was recreated with CAD analysis and hand-formed metal slats, and Mulliner apprentices contributed to details such as an authentic tool tray in the boot. The project preserves a missing link in Bentley’s history, showing the transition from pre-war designs to the post-war Continental line, because it’s the link between the manufacturer’s important and historic models: the Embiricos 4¼ Litre, the Corniche, and the post-war R Type Continental. 

 

The reconstruction of the Bentley Mark V Corniche also involved more than just technical reproduction. It required sourcing materials that matched the period, such as Connolly Vaumol leather and West of England cloth. The process included traditional craftsmanship alongside modern tools like CAD modelling. The Corniche is now the only example of its type in existence, and its recreation demonstrates an important chapter of Bentley’s history, now preserved and able to be experienced by the public. It also underlines the role of Mulliner in Bentley’s past and present, from bespoke vehicles for royalty to restorations of lost icons. The completed Corniche is a part of Bentley’s Heritage Collection and displayed at events worldwide. It first appeared at Salon Privé at Blenheim Palace in September 2019 and is set to debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California during the Monterey Car Week 2025.
