Maison&Objet’s dynamic program extends beyond the fairgrounds, transforming the entire city into an open-air laboratory for creativity. In central Tokyo’s Koishikawa district, architectural studio AOIM completes a three-story residence, shaped around a softly curving roof that gathers, reflects, and diffuses daylight into the interiors. Hemmed in by factories, apartment buildings, and commercial blocks, the plot is long and narrow, with the only two sources of openness being its depth from the street and the strip of sky overhead. The roof forms an inverted arc, a smooth, semi-cylindrical curve reminiscent of the traditional Japanese fish cake kamaboko, to admit light while also modulating its character. As the sun shifts across the day, the curve scatters direct rays into a gentle, even glow, altering in brightness and hue with the weather outside. Morning meals unfold beneath a glow that feels like a spotlight, while throughout the day, the interiors absorb variations in tone that anchor the occupants to seasonal change.

At the rear of the House in Koishikawa, where visibility to the outside is both a gift and a risk, the Tokyo-based architects at AOIM insert an atrium and terrace as a threshold between domestic life and the city that doubles as an atelier, capturing greenery from borrowed views while opening onto an exterior staircase. The stair acts as a screen and extension, offering partial shelter and encouraging residents to step out and engage with the neighborhood on a terrace designed to be used as casually as a bench.

 

The House in Koishikawa is modest in scale, just 56.43 square meters of building area across three floors, totaling 157.84 square meters of interior space. The reinforced concrete structure is insulated externally, leaving interior walls raw and unfinished. Without topcoat or polish, the exposed concrete retains a hand-formed quality that contrasts with the precision of its geometry. Its roughness softens under natural light, lending a gentle warmth to otherwise stark surfaces.

The McLaren Marauder is an Off-Roader concept that challenges the Lamborghini Urus

For years, the Lamborghini Urus has been the undisputed king of the super-SUV hill, a four-door brute that prints money for Sant’Agata. Meanwhile, McLaren has steadfastly claimed it would never build an SUV, holding true to its purist, lightweight supercar ethos. But what if they caved, and did it entirely on their own terms? This, the McLaren Marauder concept by artist Quirkpixel, is that glorious, hypothetical answer. It’s a two-door middle finger to practicality, a high-riding missile that suggests the ultimate driving thrill isn’t limited to a ribbon of perfect asphalt. It’s a machine built for power-sliding through a gravel hairpin with a V8 screaming behind your head.

The idea of a “safari” supercar isn’t new; Porsche has done it with the 911 Dakar, and Lamborghini with the Huracán Sterrato. But this concept takes it a step further. This is a ground-up design that bakes the off-road capability right into the McLaren DNA, instead of just bolting on a lift kit and plastic cladding. It maintains the cab-forward, mid-engine-esque proportions of a true McLaren while adopting the ground clearance and muscularity of a Baja trophy truck. The Marauder argues that the soul of a supercar, its precision, power, and driver-focused engineering, can and should be unleashed anywhere. It’s a statement that your multi-million dollar toy doesn’t need to be afraid of a little dirt.

The profile is where things get really interesting; the sloping, coupe-like roofline flows into ridiculously wide haunches, barely containing the massive, knobby off-road tires. That classic McLaren side intake is present, but it’s deeper and more chiseled, feeding air to what one can only assume is their ferocious 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, probably tuned to deliver around 750 horsepower with a torque curve optimized for low-grip situations. The whole thing is capped off with a motorsport-derived wing that feels both absurd and absolutely necessary.

You can see the rally-raid influence in every angle. The wheels look like they were pulled straight from a Dakar competitor, with a multi-spoke design that’s all about strength, not just style. They expose huge, ventilated brake discs and red calipers, a clear signal that this thing is meant to stop as violently as it accelerates. The short front and rear overhangs provide extreme approach and departure angles, a critical detail for serious off-roading that many “performance SUVs” conveniently ignore. Even the satin green paint feels purposeful, a color that looks good with a fine layer of dust on it. There’s no back seat, of course; that space is likely reserved for the engine and reinforced suspension components. The focus is entirely on the driver and perhaps one very brave passenger. The high center console flows seamlessly into the dashboard, creating a cocoon-like environment that isolates you from the outside world and connects you directly to the machine.

The driver interface is a masterful execution of minimalist functionality. A thick, Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel sits in front of a fully digital instrument cluster, likely configurable to show vital off-road data like pitch, roll, and suspension travel alongside the typical tachometer and speedometer. The large, portrait-oriented central touchscreen looks borrowed from a 765LT, handling infotainment and vehicle settings, but you’ll also notice a few chunky, physical controls for critical functions. These are likely designed for easy use with driving gloves on. One can only imagine the drive mode selector would have options like “Gravel,” “Sand,” and a full-on “Baja” mode in place of the usual “Sport” and “Track,” completing the transformation from supercar to all-terrain weapon.

Ultimately, while the Marauder is a digital fantasy, it poses a tantalizing question for McLaren and the entire industry. By sacrificing rear seats for a purer, more focused two-door layout, it sidesteps the identity crisis plaguing other super-SUVs, which often feel like compromises between a sports car and a family hauler. This concept is no compromise; it is an unapologetic, single-minded machine built for a very specific kind of insanity. It represents the logical evolution of the supercar, a vehicle that delivers extreme performance not just on a curated track, but anywhere the driver has the nerve to point it. McLaren may never build this exact car, but the spirit of the Marauder, the idea that ultimate speed doesn’t need a road, feels like an inevitable and thrilling future.

This Serpentine Bumper Case is perfect for Kobe and Slytherin fans

With a rather cool ouroboros-inspired design where the snake wraps effortlessly around the phone before eating its own tail, this particular case isn’t made for protection; it’s made for personality. I couldn’t find too many details on the casemaker in general, but whoever designed or manufactured this case gets full marks for building something so audacious it has my heart!

Most bumper cases do the bare minimum – they guard the phone from the sides and from the back without necessarily cladding your phone completely. To that extent, this Serpent Hollow Case fulfils those exact qualifications too, snapping to the phone’s corners to give it a secure fit. It doesn’t necessarily guard the edges, but if your phone did fall down, chances are the bumpers will absorb the damage before your phone’s chassis will. And if it falls on its back, the gorgeous snake wrapped around your phone will absorb all impact before your camera array will.

The case features a single serpent wrapped around the back of your phone, with its sinewy body covering the backplate in a way that looks gorgeous, although I’d argue it probably isn’t great to hold. Nothing about this case makes sense or is ergonomic – in fact, it’s probably really weird to hold on to, and I’m sure placing your phone screen-side up on any surface will result in a horribly uneven experience… but what the case lacks in practicality, it makes up for in style… and quite like snapping a Labubu to your handbag is a bit of a social flex, this case seems to achieve the same thing too, making people go ooh and ahh as they look at the serpent guarding your phone.

Pretend it’s a black mamba and the case is perfect for Kobe stans, pretend it’s Nagini and you’ve got the ideal Slytherin case. The case can be found on AliExpress and Temu, although the prices and designs vary greatly. US readers will also need to factor tariffs into the pricing, given that the de minimis exception has now ended.

Wright’s Lost House Finally Opens Its Doors After 66 Years Hidden in Ohio

You buy a house in Ohio, and while exploring your new property, you discover architectural blueprints for Frank Lloyd Wright’s final design. Not just any blueprints, but Project #5909, found on his drawing board the day he died. This actually happened to Sarah Dykstra in 2018.

The discovery launched a six-decade mystery into motion. Wright’s final residential commission had been delivered to the Penfield family during Wright’s funeral week in 1959, then forgotten as life moved on. The plans contained something extraordinary: Wright’s complete vision for his last house, oriented around a specific poplar tree and built from locally quarried river stones. Every detail had been specified, every material chosen, every sight line calculated.

For architecture enthusiasts who spend years touring Wright houses from behind velvet ropes, this discovery offered something unprecedented. Here was a Wright design that had never been built, never been compromised by decades of modifications, never been stripped of its original intentions. More importantly, it still had its original building site, and that poplar tree was still standing.

The Mother-Daughter Mission That Changed Everything

Sarah Dykstra purchased the original Penfield property in 2018, unaware she was acquiring one of architecture’s greatest mysteries. The sale included both an existing 1955 Wright house and something far more precious: the unbuilt plans for Wright’s last Usonian design.

Working alongside her mother Debbie as co-general contractor, Dykstra embarked on a mission that would test every assumption about authentic architectural preservation. The challenge went beyond typical restoration work. Modern building codes, updated materials, and contemporary safety standards threatened to compromise Wright’s original vision. Dykstra established a non-negotiable mandate for her professional team: “If you must change something due to current building regulations and code, do so under the ‘skin’, so the house will look exactly the same.”

Construction began in late 2022, with teams working from Wright’s original specification book alongside supplemental structural engineering drawings. The project required permits that honored Wright’s 1959 intentions while satisfying 2025 safety requirements. The breakthrough came through meticulous attention to Wright’s original material specifications. As the building moves from the intimate bedroom areas to the expansive living spaces, materials shift from solid stone to transparent glass, choreographing the resident’s journey from private retreat to communal gathering space.

Wright believed homes should support natural human movement patterns, and RiverRock shows this philosophy through its flowing spatial transitions. The three-bedroom, one-and-three-quarter bath layout accommodates up to six guests with two queen beds and two extra-long twin beds, reflecting Wright’s attention to human scale and comfort. Each room connects to the next through carefully planned sight lines that create both intimacy and openness.

The Hidden Tech That Makes It Work

Modern visitors experience Wright’s 1959 vision through 2025 technology, yet none of the contemporary systems compromise the authentic look. Heated floors warm the space through invisible radiant systems that Wright himself would have appreciated for their integration with his design philosophy.

The all-glass living room walls feature modern glazing that provides superior insulation while maintaining Wright’s intended transparency. A landmark opening is set to take place in Marfa, the small Texas town whose transformation into an ‘artist destination’ was famously led by the legendary Donald Judd. Among most important American artists of the minimalist movement, his practice extended far beyond sculpture and furniture into the field of architecture.

 

Judd had moved from New York City in the 1970s to this remote small town which dots the endless high desert. During those days he was busy establishing large-scale art spaces and undertaking ambitious historic preservation projects. His many endeavors included an office in the heart of town which ultimately became his working studio dedicated to architecture.

 

The office occupies a two-story brick structure which was first built in the early twentieth century. Its recent restoration led by Schaum Architects follows a seven-year effort that began in 2018 and paused after a fire in 2021. Throughout it all, the design team’s approach is driven by Judd’s own principles — attention to proportion, respect for original materials, and thoughtful adaptation to context. The renovation of Donald Judd’s architecture office in Marfa has reached completion and will reopen on September 20th, 2025.

The reopening of the Marfa office is led by Texas-based studio Schaum Architects along with the Judd Foundation, which sees to the preservation and revival of Donald Judd’s architectural works. Through this restoration project, passive cooling strategies, a rooftop solar array, and sustainable insulation methods are integrated into the original structure. Its historic spirit, meanwhile, is maintained and celebrated.

 

Interiors become gallery spaces, archives to display Judd’s plywood and metal furniture, physical models, and archival material. Visitors are invited to explore these rooms to experience the depth of Judd’s architectural practice in the spaces where it came to life.

 

Ahead of the office’s September 20th reopening, designboom spoke with Rainer Judd, President of the Judd Foundation and Donald Judd’s daughter, about the project’s place within his architectural legacy and its role in the ongoing story of Marfa.

designboom (DB): Can you describe the spirit of Marfa through your eyes, and through the eyes of Donald Judd? How has it has evolved since his first presence there?

 

Rainer Judd (RJ): Marfa has a small-town history that is the core of its spirit — generations of individuals and families have helped shaped this before Don. From its days as a military outpost to its period as a cattle town, through the de facto segregation period against Mexican American residents, through its economic up and downs, it tells the story of change in the southwest, demographically and economically. Before it was settled as a town, this region has been inhabited for thousands of years.

 

For Don, Marfa was a place to install his work, a place to be in and care for the land, and to think. Inadvertently, it was an opportunity to do something locally that did not go against the nature of the place. He was against Marfa becoming a cattle town museum, and an art town as well, he was against the idea of an artist colony.

 

Today Marfa is considered an ‘art destination,’ and it was not when Don was living there. It is our responsibility to show up to the challenges we’ve helped create. I think for the work of the Foundation it is important to consider Marfa in an everyday context, of a small town, with us being one of the many individuals contributing to the next chapter of the place’s history.

DB: While he is known first as an artist and designer, he famously had many built and unbuilt works of architecture. How did these different creative disciplines intersect for him?

 

RJ: Art and design were individual parts of a whole, but you can see how they work with architecture, they all deal with space. In his writing on all of these — art, architecture, design — he states that the need to preserve and install his work in spaces that he considered appropriate and the invention of his work, were two primary concerns that ‘joined and both tend toward architecture.’ Concerned with the space surrounding his art, this led to repurposing buildings and envisioning future ones for different purposes.

 

That being a given, he understood that art did not have to concern itself with function the way architecture and design do. He emphasized that architecture was not art, but that did not mean that it could not be artistic or cultural the way that many objects and structures clearly are.

 

His concerns with scale, materials, form, and quality were the points at which these disciplines intersected. And also dignity, which he refers to often in writing and in interviews about architecture and art. The dignity of spaces, for living and for working, he believed good buildings had that quality. And of course, the inherent dignity of art, which led to his concern with its preservation and proper installation.

DB: How do this building and its restoration illustrate his architectural and artistic vision?

 

RJ: Considering the historic and spatial context of buildings, understanding their original structure and function was important to Don. When he bought the Architecture Office, one of the first things he did was sandblast the facade, he wanted to return the building to its original condition. This action takes into consideration the town, the style, and the time in which it was built. He respected original thought, labor, and materials. He was interested in not wasting this. He understood that the building could serve other purposes and even have his ‘unusual furniture’ inside but structurally it should be returned to the context, or as he would say the ‘situation.’

 

This aspect of understanding historically, spatially, and culturally where one is and what can be done with the available materials and resources, can be seen in both his art and architecture practices. And it was also what guided the Foundation’s work in this restoration project. The building needed to be up to date to protect the installed collection and the integrity of its structure, to adapt to the desert climate and be energy efficient, but whatever had to be done had to consider the existing situation and how it fit into the broader history and community in Marfa.

DB: What discoveries were made during the team’s environmental condition studies, and what were some challenges in bringing the building back to life? (Especially with the harsh Marfa climate?)

 

RJ: The building has beautiful details that were able to be maintained and preserved or rebuilt after the fire — from the archway on the second floor, to the press tinned ceiling, to its double hung windows, to the framing of the building. Following the fire, we had the opportunity to have new conversations to the possibilities within the structure.

 

The building itself, built circa 1915, was structured with a lattice of wood beams across the attic ceiling so it all had to be rebuilt. This provided our talented project team with a time period to consider how to do it better, more efficiently, with the time of one hundred years to reflect upon. We installed a system which I am excited about, which reflects the ‘technologies’ humans have used for thousands of years in desert climates in which the cool night air flushes the building.

DB: Judd’s furniture and design pieces, especially physical architectural models, are a huge part of the restoration. How do these elements help us better understand his legacy?

 

RJ: Don’s art and furniture are widely known, there is a great deal of scholarship about his art, and to some extent his furniture and writing. His architecture is perhaps lesser known and the scale of it not wholly understood. Building big and new at large scales was the norm in 1980s, and it is not that Don did not have big projects, but he understood that resources are finite and that destroying existing architecture in favor of the ‘new’ was against reason, for him even to an ethical degree.

 

The architectural models and plans in the space illustrate not only his range within his practice of projects he was working on but also serve as examples of one person’s understanding of architecture, of form and function, and of space and time.

DB: With the Architecture Office now restored, how does it fit into the bigger picture for the Judd Foundation’s long-term vision for preserving Donald’s legacy in Marfa?

 

RJ: The Architecture Office marks the completion of the first total building restoration project in Marfa (following the completion of the historic restoration of Spring Street in New York). In the scale of artists foundations both in the United States and abroad, we are a small team with a large mission that involves maintaining Judd’s physical spaces and art, public engagement, research, publications, exhibitions, land conservation, and gardens. The restoration was therefore monumental for us in terms of how the community, both in Marfa and beyond, came together along with the restoration project team of engineers, specialists, and craftspeople, to preserve his spaces.

 

Looking at the bigger picture, this is a small triumph, full of lessons in resilience and collaboration, that will guide the rest of our restoration projects.
