This Robot Vacuum Watches You Clean, Then Learns to Copy You: xLean TR1 Hands On at IFA 2025

There’s an unspoken agreement we have with our current robot vacuums. They handle the mundane, everyday dust, and in return, we handle the sudden, chaotic messes ourselves. It’s a decent partnership that keeps the floors generally tidy, but it always requires two separate tools and two different mindsets for cleaning. A startup named xLean, however, is proposing a radical new treaty at IFA 2025 with its debut TR1 robot. This device is engineered to be both your autonomous floor cleaner and, with a quick transformation, the powerful handheld tool you grab the moment your toddler redecorates the kitchen floor with yogurt.

The company, a startup spun out of a top robotics institute and staffed by veterans from places like DJI and Roborock, is making a bold claim. They believe the next leap in cleaning intelligence isn’t just about avoiding more obstacles, it’s about a robot learning to clean with human intent. The TR1 is their Trojan horse for this idea, a device that watches how you clean up a spill in its handheld form and then applies that knowledge when it’s back in robot mode. It’s a fascinating, almost sci-fi concept grounded in a piece of hardware that looks thoughtfully engineered and ready for the real world.

That one-second switch from autonomous robot to handheld cleaner is the core of the entire experience. It’s not a clumsy, multi-step process; an electric lock disengages the main unit, and you’re ready to tackle a sudden mess. This dual-form design is the only way the robot can access its “Self-Evolving Intelligence.” By using the RGB-D camera, green laser sensor, and motor encoders in handheld mode, the TR1 records your movements and habits. It learns your specific approach to cleaning, a process known as Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback, or RLHF. This collected data, anonymized with user consent, is then used to refine its cleaning algorithms, meaning the robot actually gets smarter and more aligned with your preferences over time through OTA updates.

Of course, a clever learning system is meaningless if the fundamental cleaning is weak, especially in handheld mode where you’re dealing with the worst messes. This is where xLean’s engineering team seems to have put in the hours, developing what they call Dual-Motor DirectSuction. Instead of a typical vacuum-then-mop system, the TR1 uses high negative pressure to suck up solids and liquids simultaneously. The real magic is the VortexMatrix Separation Technology, a system refined over three years and nearly 40 prototypes to solve the physics puzzle of separating air and liquid inside a low-profile body. Paired with dual rollers spinning at 800 RPM, it has the raw power to handle anything from spilled cereal to a sticky juice disaster without just smearing it around.

The intelligence extends to its robot form as well. Its square body and impressive 6mm-level edge cleaning ability ensure it gets into the corners that circular robots famously miss. The navigation is powered by Reinforcement Learning, trained across millions of simulated scenarios to handle complex environments like a maze of chair legs without getting stuck. It maps a 150-square-meter space in just three minutes and uses a combination of Vision and LiDAR for object recognition, identifying over 400 different household obstacles. For the privacy-conscious, there is a physical “Red Line” camera shutter that slides over the lens, giving you a clear visual confirmation that it isn’t watching when you don’t want it to.

Once the cleaning is done, the TR1 returns to its OMNI Station, a base that’s as innovative as the robot itself. It features what xLean claims is the world’s first disposal system designed for mixed solid-liquid waste, so you don’t have to deal with the gross slurry yourself. The station then performs a full-path flush with 60°C hot water to clean the robot’s internal tubing and rollers, followed by a self-drying cycle. For total automation, the station is even designed to be upgraded for direct water refills and drainage, eliminating the need to ever touch a water tank again. It’s a complete, end-to-end system that seems to have considered every user pain point.

It’s clear the team at xLean is playing the long game. They talk about the TR1 as the first step toward general-purpose robotics, a platform to validate their core technologies at scale. The integration with the Apple ecosystem, including Matter and HomeKit support, shows they understand the importance of seamless smart home control. They’ve even built the hardware to be modular, hinting at future upgrades that could unlock new capabilities. With a global Kickstarter launch planned soon after its IFA debut, the xLean TR1 feels like a confident and compelling answer to the question of what comes next for home cleaning. Vincent Leroy’s kinetic sculpture evokes cosmic molecular cloud

 

Installed in front of Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), Molecular Cloud is a kinetic sculpture by French artist Vincent Leroy. The work draws inspiration from cosmic molecular formations, translating them into a floating, cloud-like structure suspended within the urban setting. The piece is part of DDP Design & Art in Seoul, whose 2025 edition explores the theme of movement.

 

The installation consists of large mirrored spheres tinted in glossy pink. These elements reflect the surrounding environment, sky, buildings, and passersby, creating a constantly shifting interplay of light and form. Slowly, the spheres move in relation to one another, generating fluid and changing compositions. The motion suggests organic breathing, achieved through a calibrated balance between geometric structure and mechanical precision.

Positioned against the backdrop of Zaha Hadid’s DDP, Molecular Cloud establishes a dialogue with the building’s flowing, metallic architecture. The contrast between the static structure and the moving sculpture highlights different approaches to material, form, and reflection. Together, they produce an environment where light, shadow, and surface interact in continuous variation.

 

The project was originally conceived by the artist in Paris and first presented in California at the Coachella Festival in 2023. For its installation in Seoul, it was fabricated in Guangzhou and realized through collaboration with a Hong Kong–based production agency, underlining its international scope. By combining reflective material, kinetic engineering, and spatial placement, Vincent Leroy’s Molecular Cloud explores the intersection of sculpture, architecture, and environment. Its slow movements invite observation and pause within the pace of the city, encouraging an experience of space defined as much by stillness as by motion.

Every so often, though, a company we’ve been tracking drops something that feels less like an update and more like a statement. Timekettle is that company this year. We’ve talked about their W4 Pro earbuds before, praising how they nailed the near-instantaneous translation that makes conversation feel human again. Now, they’ve unveiled the W4 AI Interpreter Earbuds, a smaller, sleeker, in-ear sibling aimed squarely at the rest of us, not just the C-suite execs jetting between Tokyo and Berlin.

This launch solidifies the idea that Timekettle has found its groove. They are building a cohesive ecosystem, not just a collection of one-off gadgets. The W4 borrows the core philosophy of the W4 Pro, prioritizing seamless, natural communication, but packages it for casual travelers and spontaneous conversations. Industrial Design Case Study: A Magic Handheld X-Ray Machine for Law Enforcement

Viken Detection specializes in harnessing detection technologies for use in security, law enforcement and public safety. To create their Raven product, a handheld X-ray imager, they turned to industrial design consultancy Sprout Studios.

Sprout partnered with Viken Detection to design the next generation of their handheld imaging device, RAVEN. This compact backscatter X-ray imager is purpose-built for trained law enforcement, security, and inspection professionals who rely on powerful, portable technology in unpredictable environments. With its lightweight frame and advanced imaging capabilities, RAVEN delivers high-resolution scans and exceptional mobility, making it an essential tool for rapid threat detection across a range of operational contexts.

The design needed to accommodate a wide spectrum of users and conditions—from gloved hands in cold weather to fast-moving, high-stakes inspections. Viken sought a modern aesthetic that communicated ruggedness and clarity of use, integrating tactile controls and a high-resolution screen into a housing that supported both one-handed and two-handed operation.

Sprout approached the challenge by grounding our design decisions in human-centered principles and real-world functionality. We developed a robust resin housing that meets IP-54 environmental protection standards without sacrificing portability. The handles were sculpted for intuitive grip, while control surfaces were optimized for usability in complex field conditions. Throughout the project, Sprout worked in close collaboration with Viken’s engineering team—holding frequent check-ins to adapt the exterior design in step with evolving internal layouts.

The final form marks a purposeful shift forward in Viken’s visual language—sleek, durable, and built to integrate seamlessly into the broader product system. A targeted CMF strategy further reinforces the product’s identity, drawing from visual cues common in military and law enforcement gear to signal performance, resilience, and tactical intent.

The result is RAVEN: a smart, handheld imaging tool that elevates the standard for mobile security operations. It merges cutting-edge detection capabilities with thoughtful, field-ready design—empowering professionals to operate with confidence, speed, and precision.

IFA 2025: Beyerdynamic’s New Headphones Have a Clear Message for Sony and Bose

For anyone who follows audio, Beyerdynamic has always represented a certain kind of German precision. It’s a brand synonymous with recording studios, reference headphones, and the sort of meticulous engineering that prioritizes sonic purity above all else. The AVENTHO 200 arrives with a clear mission: to blend studio-grade audio with the feature set modern travelers and commuters expect. It’s built around 45 mm drivers engineered in Germany, a detail that audiophiles will immediately notice. The inclusion of aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless codecs confirms their commitment to high-resolution wireless sound, giving it an edge for listeners on platforms that support it. Here’s where things get interesting. The AMIRON ZERO is arguably the most forward-thinking product of the trio, adopting a unique open-ear clip design. These aren’t earbuds and they aren’t bone conduction; instead, a C-shaped frame rests gently on the outer ear without actually entering the ear canal. This form factor is designed for all-day comfort and, more importantly, complete situational awareness. Weighing just 6 grams per side, they are aimed squarely at the professional or commuter who needs to stay connected to their surroundings while enjoying music or podcasts. It’s a clever design that acknowledges a growing fatigue with having ear canals constantly plugged, offering a true ambient listening experience.

Despite their minimalist appearance, the AMIRON ZERO earbuds pack some solid tech. They run on Bluetooth 5.4 for a stable, low-energy connection and offer up to 20 hours of total playback when you include the charging case. A ten-minute quick charge provides two hours of listening time, which is perfect for a quick top-up before heading out. Beyerdynamic also paid attention to the little details that signal quality, like including a reinforced metal hinge on the USB-C charging case for better durability. An IP54 rating adds resilience against splashes and dust, and the companion app allows users to tweak the sound with a 5-band EQ, which is crucial for fine-tuning audio on an open-ear device.

Ultimately, this trio of releases from Beyerdynamic feels like a cohesive and well-considered expansion. The company is leveraging its audio pedigree while embracing modern form factors and features. With the AVENTHO 200 priced at €299, the AMIRON ZERO at €149, and the AMIRON 200 at €179, the lineup is competitively positioned to appeal to a wide range of users. These products demonstrate a keen awareness of the contemporary audio market, moving beyond the studio to meet listeners wherever they are. Swiss Application for Robot Dogs: Delivering Mail and Meals

RIVR, the Swiss company that makes a nimble, wheeled robot dog, has now advanced to commercial trials. When we looked in on them earlier this year, they’d configured the ‘bot to carry a crate under its belly:

Now they’ve modified the design to put the payload up top, the easier for humans to access them. The company has partnered with two organizations, Swiss Post and Just Eat Takeaway, to deliver mail and meals in Zurich.

Under the Swiss Post arrangement, the dogbots ride around in an autonomous vehicle. They hop out at each stop and ferry letters and packages to doorsteps, all without human intervention:

“The system runs 24/7, delivering on demand, regardless of time or weather,” the company writes. “No more waiting for scheduled drop-offs. No more delivery windows. Just fast, smart, and seamless service — powered by machines that adapt to the real world in real time.”

The food delivery application, meanwhile, shows why it makes sense to have the payload at human height:

A Low-Tech Take on Color-Changing Lighting

These days “smart” LED bulbs are all the rage. But for those who’d like lighting that can change color without having to use an app or WiFi, here’s a solution made of cardboard and paper:

That’s the Pop-Up Lamp, by French industrial designer César Moncaut.

It’s in production by Dutch design brand Risette and runs €205 (USD $239), but they’ll only ship within Europe.

Adidas Treadflow is the first running shoes built for the treadmill

During the pandemic, when most of us were stuck inside our homes, there was a resurgence in indoor workouts. Sales of treadmills also spiked since people couldn’t run outside, so they would just run indoors to get their daily exercise. These indoor runners, of course, used their regular running shoes for their workouts since there didn’t seem to be any footwear made specifically for treadmill running.

Well, until now, that is. Adidas has finally come up with sneakers that are built for those using their treadmills to get their miles in. The Treadflow Running Shoes are lightweight, breathable shoes that use the Climacool technology of the three-stripes brand to make sure that you’re “cool, dry, and ready” as you’re running on your machine. This ensures that you are able to focus on your workout without worrying about your comfort, safety, or hygiene.
