Apple’s Intro Specifically Pays Tribute To The Jobs+Jony Ive Era Of Design (And ignores the Vision Pro)

Usually, every Apple September event starts fairly predictably – either by showcasing how the Apple Watch saved lives, or by focusing on a few key features that have made Apple products great over the last year. This time, Apple did something rather unusual – it specifically highlighted a single era within its existence. Starting off with one of Steve Jobs’ most iconic quotes on design, the 1 and a half minute homage pays tribute to Apple’s Hardware and Software, highlighting the important role that design plays in the company’s ethos. The software portion predominantly focuses on Apple’s newly unveiled Liquid Glass interface… but the hardware portion reveals something more unusual.

The hardware section is almost entirely an homage to the Jobs/Ive era of design. Apple only released a few new product categories since Jony Ive departed the company in 2019 – the AirTag, the Watch Ultra, the AirPods Max, the HomePod Mini, the MagSafe charger, and the Vision Pro. Now, all of those designs featured in the homage… but the Vision Pro got practically zero fanfare. Heck, Apple even showcased MagSafe charging on the Mac (something it killed and then brought back), and went as far as to highlight the design of some iconic Apple Stores across the world. But the Vision Pro’s showcase was limited to a 1-second hyper-close-up shot of the crown. Nothing about the interface, nothing about EyeSight, nothing about hand tracking, no Spatial Computing, nothing. Confusing, no?

The homage is truly a trip down memory lane, and a brilliant insight into Apple’s deep design-driven approach. The video starts with a circle, showing every single area where Apple’s used the circle to its advantage – buttons, camera lenses, watch crowns, AirTags, even the MagSafe charging puck. The video then goes to the humble square, showing the Mac charger, the Mac Mini, buttons on the keyboard, the icons on the phone and laptop, even the Dynamic Island turning into a square depending on the active widget.

Moving on, the video shows how Apple’s design adopts the heart as meaningful iconography. It’s on the iPad’s notes app, on the Watch, in Messages. The capsule shape shows up in the Messages boxes too, as it does on the Watch button, the AirPods case rim, and more. The video goes on to play Apple’s greatest hits – MagSafe charging on the MacBook, MagSafe on the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, and the magnetic closure of the laptop lid, and the adherence of MagSafe accessories on the iPhone.

The architecture gets a shout-out too, which is unusual because Apple’s architecture isn’t really highlighted much anywhere, in keynotes, on its website, or even in documentation. However, Apple did take the time to celebrate some of its most noteworthy stores, like the Apple Store in Shanghai, the one in Abu Dhabi, Fifth Avenue New York, Marina Bay Sands Singapore, Bangkok, Istanbul, and its circular headquarters. This particular touch is unusual, since Apple rarely designs its own stores. Many stores are outsourced to architecture firms like Foster + Partners, which built quite a few of the iconic stores as well as the Cupertino HQ. Still, it shows that Apple controls the design vision even when it isn’t actively a part of the process.

That being said, I really expected a little more from this homage. Given exactly how much time, money, and effort Apple’s spent on the Vision Pro, its broader design goals of spatial computing, and just how influential its OS has been in crafting the liquid glass interface, the fact that the Vision Pro didn’t get any notable limelight in this homage seems odd. It makes me wonder whether the company’s really investing as much in the headset’s successor, which is due to launch sometime in the next 2 years.

For the true design nerds looking to understand exactly the profound role Jony Ive had on Apple’s design, there’s an entire book by Andrew Zuckerman and Jony Ive titled “Designed By Apple In California” that chronicles the legendary Chief Design Officer’s journey and process in his tenure at Apple. Ive stuck around at Apple for 8 more years after Steve Jobs passed, and it can be argued that only he understood Jobs’ broad design vision, keeping the fire burning at Apple even after Jobs’ demise in 2011. This small video at the beginning of the Apple keynote felt like a thank you note to both Jobs and Ive, for their ‘vision’… no pun intended.

The telephoto camera offers 4x zoom at 100 millimeters and a far-reaching 8x zoom at 200 millimeters, delivering Apple’s longest optical quality zoom ever in an iPhone. The sensor measures 56% larger than the previous generation, which improves sharpness in bright light and provides better detail across all lighting conditions. This substantial sensor upgrade enables professional-level telephoto photography that rivals dedicated camera systems.

The new telephoto system provides longer reach and more creative choices for professional photographers. The 4x zoom at 100mm creates a classic focal length for portraiture, providing flattering perspective and new framing options perfect for professional headshots. The 8x zoom at 200mm enables closer capture with beautiful depth of field effects, opening new possibilities for nature photography, sports capture, and detailed subject isolation.

Computational Photography Excellence

The 8x telephoto utilizes the updated Photonic Engine, which integrates machine learning into even more parts of the image pipeline for unprecedented quality. Apple applies deep learning models for demosaicing, which constructs images from raw sensor output using quad pixels in the imaging sensors. This preserves natural detail, reduces noise, and delivers significantly improved color accuracy, especially in challenging low-light conditions.

The new 48-megapixel Fusion telephoto camera system provides digital zoom capabilities up to 40x magnification while maintaining exceptional image quality. With the complete telephoto system, iPhone 17 Pro delivers the equivalent of eight professional lenses in your pocket, from wide-angle capture to extreme telephoto reach. This comprehensive lens system eliminates the need for multiple camera bodies and lenses that professional photographers traditionally carry.

Professional Validation

Apple placed iPhone 17 Pro cameras in the hands of world-class photographers to demonstrate real-world professional capabilities. The results showcase the camera system’s ability to capture stunning detail, accurate color reproduction, and professional-quality images across diverse shooting conditions. These professional tests validate the iPhone 17 Pro’s position as a legitimate tool for serious photography work, not just mobile convenience shooting.

Professional Video Capabilities

Pro models already lead smartphone video quality with format support and seamless integration into professional workflows that rivals dedicated Pro camera systems. No other smartphone approaches this level of professional video capability, with Apple even filming the iPhone 17 Pro event using iPhone 17 Pro cameras to demonstrate real-world production quality.

Professional filmmakers appreciate features like Dolby Vision HDR, 4K 120fps recording, ProRes Log format support, and comprehensive codec compatibility. The iPhone allows filmmakers to get closer to their subjects with more intimate, nimble, and flexible shooting approaches than traditional camera rigs permit. This versatility transforms how professional video content gets created across productions both large and small.

Apple introduces the most requested professional video features this year, allowing iPhone 17 Pro to integrate even more seamlessly into established professional workflows. These enhancements position the iPhone 17 Pro as a legitimate professional video tool that complements rather than compromises existing production pipelines used by serious filmmakers and content creators.

ProRes RAW and Advanced Filmmaking

Apple adds support for ProRes RAW Capture, the industry-leading Apple-developed video codec that records all information captured by the camera’s sensor to provide unparalleled flexibility in post-production. This format proves ideal for high-dynamic range video work and has become the industry standard for professional production since its introduction. ProRes RAW gives filmmakers complete control over color grading and image processing in post-production workflows.

The iPhone 17 Pro introduces Genlock support, enabling accurate and professional-looking transitions without hours of manual frame-by-frame alignment when using multiple cameras or on-screen graphics. This professional synchronization capability opens advanced filmmaking techniques like time splicing and bullet time effects, allowing filmmakers to change audience perspective while freezing time. Genlock support works through the new Blackmagic Camera Pro Dock, with APIs available for third-party developers.

These advanced filmmaking tools become more affordable and approachable through iPhone 17 Pro integration. Professional techniques that previously required expensive specialized equipment now work seamlessly within the iPhone ecosystem while maintaining broadcast-quality results that meet industry standards.

anish kapoor draws from dante’s inferno to sculpt new subway station in naples

Naples Opens Landmark Subway Station by Anish Kapoor

A sculptural steel monolith by Anish Kapoor now marks the entrance to a subway station in Naples, Italy. The project at Monte Sant’Angelo Subway Station, which first began in 2003, is set to officially open on September 11th, 2025. Integrating sculpture and architecture into a singular environment, the work has been conceived by the celebrity artist as part of a larger regeneration of the city’s Traiano district.

Anish Kapoor explains:In the city of Mount Vesuvius and Dante’s mythical entrance to the Inferno, I found it important to try and deal with what it really means to go underground.’

two sculptural entrances

With his newly completed intervention, artist Anish Kapoor introduces to the station two distinct points of entry, each designed as sculptural thresholds into Naples’ metro network. The university entrance, formed from weathering steel, swells from the plaza in a way that is ‘archetypal, raw and labial.’ The artist’s team explains:It appears to offer a descent into the underworld.’

The Traiano entrance presents a contrasting language. Here, a tubular opening of smooth steel is precise and brushed. The team continues:As in so much of Kapoor’s work, interior space is turned inside out, he reverses upwards and downwards in a sculptural work that is not an object in the landscape, but rather is joined, rooted and part of the landscape.’ Together, the two entrances frame travelers’ movements through sculpture. The familiar thresholds are no longer secondary details, but are defining elements of Naples’ urban experience.

infrastructure becomes public art

Anish Kapoor collaborated with Jan Kaplický and Amanda Levete of Future Systems to build these new sculptures for the Naples subway station. The trio together worked to maintain a sense of raw continuity — the tunnel walls are kept raw, allowing for an expressive material honesty. The team concludes:This is an architecture embodied with the porosity of the body — a collision of the functional and formal with the aesthetic and the mythic. It is art as architecture as never seen before.’

While the station arrives as a functional addition to Naples’s expanding metro system, it is also a cultural statement as the southern Italian city creates a dialogue between its infrastructure and the realm of public art. The opening marks the culmination of two decades of work.

apple iPhone air debuts as thinnest, feather-light model yet

apple reveals next-gen iphones

At its ‘Awe-Dropping’ keynote today, September 9th, 2025, Apple unveiled the iPhone Air as the thinnest iPhone it has ever made. Just 5.6 millimeters thin (less than a quarter-inch), the phone is crafted with ‘spacecraft titanium,’ a material that feels feather-light and durable.

Despite shedding thickness, the phone is said to hold its ground against wear and daily handling with Ceramic Shield, its glass-ceramic material first introduced on the iPhone 12 lineup in 2020. Now, this material protects both the front and back surfaces. Meanwhile, the 6.5-inch display shows a peak outdoor brightness reaches 3000 nits, the highest on any iPhone to date.

Named Apple’s thinnest iPhone yet, it’s this record-setting profile which sets it apart from the rest of the iPhone lineup — including the new iPhone 17, which was unveiled today as well with a thickness of 8.25 mm and a 6.3-inch display.

the iphone air

The design of the Apple iPhone Air is centered on a slim, efficient internal architecture that creates space for a larger battery without adding weight. The plateaued back surface houses the cameras and speakers with precision milling, while the titanium frame ensures durability under daily use.

The new Ceramic Shield 2 glass is treated with an anti-reflection coating and delivers three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation. Combined with the titanium body, these updates make the iPhone Air the most durable iPhone to date.

The iPhone Air features a 48MP Fusion Main camera capable of multiple focal lengths, alongside an 18MP Center Stage front camera. The front camera can automatically switch between portrait and landscape orientation, and AI expands the field of view for group shots. Both systems capture video in 4K HDR, with options to record simultaneously on front and rear cameras.

Inside, the A19 Pro, N1, and C1X chips deliver higher performance with improved efficiency. This combination supports intensive applications while extending battery life, and the graphics system allows for advanced mobile gaming and AI tasks.

the ultra-thin and light design is more durable than any previous iPhone.

new iPhone 17 in comparison

Apple also introduced the iPhone 17, which features many of the same upgrades but with a more conventional form. It has a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display, all 48MP rear cameras, and the new Center Stage front camera. It is slightly thicker than the Air and uses the A19 chip rather than the more advanced A19 Pro found in the iPhone Air.

The iPhone 17 begins with 256GB of storage and is offered in five colors — black, lavender, mist blue, sage, and white. While it shares features like Ceramic Shield 2 and ProMotion, its design follows Apple’s existing line rather than pushing toward the slimmer form factor of the Air.

The key difference between the Apple iPhone Air and the iPhone 17 is the approach. Of course the Air emphasizes thinness and lightness, while the iPhone 17 continues the company’s established trajectory with performance and display improvements.

iPhone 17 pro and pro max

Apple also introduced the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, both built around a redesigned aluminum unibody with an integrated vapor chamber for improved thermal performance. These models use the A19 Pro chip, which powers advanced camera systems, intensive mobile gaming, and Apple Intelligence features while extending battery life.

Each device includes three 48MP Fusion cameras — Main, Ultra Wide, and a new Telephoto lens — delivering the equivalent of eight focal lengths, including an 8x optical-quality zoom. Video tools such as ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, and genlock are designed for professional workflows, making the phones adaptable to a wide range of production environments. Ceramic Shield 2 now protects both the front and back surfaces, and the devices are available in deep blue, cosmic orange, and silver.

iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will be available in deep blue, cosmic orange, and silver

AirPods Pro 3

Alongside the new phones, Apple introduced AirPods Pro 3, a major update to its in-ear headphones. This third generation brings improved Active Noise Cancellation, removing twice as much noise as the previous version and four times more than the original model. The fit has also been refined for greater comfort and stability during activities like running or yoga. For the first time, AirPods Pro 3 can measure heart rate and track more than fifty types of workouts.

Perhaps most notably, the earbuds support Live Translation, which allows wearers to have face-to-face conversations across English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish by bringing real-time interpretation directly through the headphones. Apple notes that by the end of the year, the feature will be available in four more languages: Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (simplified).

If only one person in the conversation is wearing AirPods, the iPhone can be turned horizontally to display a live transcription of what’s being said. When they reply, their speech is translated back into the AirPods user’s language in real time.

When both people are wearing AirPods, the experience becomes more fluid. Active Noise Cancellation lowers the sound of the other person’s voice, making the translation easier to hear while the conversation can still to continue naturally.

Flowing Oasis Car Cabin Concept Reimagines the Car as a Modular Sanctuary

Cars have evolved far beyond simple transportation, becoming mobile offices, entertainment centers, and quiet retreats from the chaos of daily life. Yet most automotive interiors remain frustratingly static, designed around assumptions about how everyone should use their vehicle rather than adapting to individual needs and preferences. Fengrui Wang’s Xiaomi Flowing Oasis concept, developed as a thesis project at TU Delft, takes a radically different approach by reimagining the car interior as a modular, user-customizable sanctuary.

This speculative design draws inspiration from Xiaomi’s IoT ecosystem and “Warm-Tech” philosophy, though it remains an independent concept rather than an official company project. The Flowing Oasis envisions a future where car interiors function more like customizable living spaces, with modular bases and adjustable connectors that accommodate products of various sizes. Users become active participants in shaping their environment through what Wang calls “co-idea creation,” where the cabin adapts to personal habits, moods, and daily routines rather than forcing everyone into the same predetermined layout.

Designer: Fengrui Wang

The modular system includes small, medium, and large bases with flexible connectors, allowing users to install everything from entertainment modules to wellness accessories depending on their current needs. Want a meditation corner for your morning commute? Swap in some calming elements. Need a mobile workspace for video calls? Reconfigure the layout with productivity tools. The concept treats the car as a flowing, adaptable environment that changes as your life changes, rather than a fixed space you simply occupy.

What makes this concept particularly compelling is how it leverages the potential of IoT connectivity to create seamless integration between your car and the rest of your connected life. Drawing from Xiaomi’s ecosystem approach, the Flowing Oasis would theoretically sync with your smart home, wearables, and mobile devices to anticipate your needs and preferences. The “Warm-Tech” philosophy ensures this technology feels approachable and human rather than cold or overwhelming, focusing on emotional comfort alongside functional utility.

The business implications extend beyond just selling cars to creating ongoing relationships through modular products and services. Instead of buying a vehicle with fixed features that become outdated, users could continuously evolve their mobile sanctuary with new modules, accessories, and experiences. This approach could differentiate future electric vehicles in an increasingly crowded market by focusing on adaptability and personal connection rather than just performance specifications or autonomous driving capabilities.

Wang’s concept succeeds because it addresses a fundamental disconnect between how we live and how automotive interiors are designed. While our homes, workspaces, and digital environments become increasingly personalized and adaptive, most cars remain stubbornly uniform. The Flowing Oasis suggests a future where our vehicles become true extensions of our personal spaces, capable of evolving with our needs and providing genuine emotional comfort during the transitions between destinations.

Concepts like this matter because they challenge industry assumptions and push designers to think beyond current limitations. Even if the Flowing Oasis never becomes reality, it plants seeds for more human-centered, adaptable automotive design.

Apple AirPods Pro 3: Revolutionary Audio Breakthrough Delivers “World’s Best” Noise Cancellation

Apple just unveiled the AirPods Pro 3 at today’s highly anticipated keynote, promising to deliver the “world’s best active noise cancellation of any in-ear wireless headphones” through revolutionary acoustic engineering that CEO Tim Cook describes as their most significant audio advancement yet.

Speaking to a packed Steve Jobs Theater, Cook emphasized that today represents “our biggest product launches of the year” featuring “breakthrough technologies and product designs” that showcase Apple’s design-first philosophy where functionality matches form.

The Design Philosophy Behind the Innovation

“At Apple, design has always been fundamental to who we are and what we do,” Cook declared during the keynote opening. “For us, design goes beyond just how something looks or feels. Design is also how it works.”

This philosophy drives every aspect of the AirPods Pro 3, which builds on Apple’s hearing health innovations from last fall when AirPods Pro introduced “the world’s first end-to-end hearing health experience.”

Revolutionary Technical Breakthrough

The AirPods Pro 3 introduces what Apple calls “custom multi-port acoustic architecture” – a completely reimagined acoustic system that “precisely controls the airflow that carries sound into the ear.”

Key Technical Advances:

Transformed Bass Response: The new architecture widens the soundstage so “you hear every instrument and brings vocals” to life
Breathtaking Spatial Audio: Apple describes the listening experience as delivering unprecedented spatial positioning
Revolutionary ANC Performance: New “ultra low noise microphones and advanced computational audio” combined with foam-infused ear tips

Unprecedented Performance Claims

The numbers are staggering. According to Apple’s live demonstration:

2x better ANC than AirPods Pro 2 (previous generation)
4x more effective** than original AirPods Pro
“Over-the-ear headphone performance in a pocket-sized design”
Enhanced Transparency mode where “your own voice and people speaking to you sound more natural than ever”

“These are by far my favorite AirPods,” Apple’s audio engineering team stated during the presentation. “For those with the original AirPods Pro, the difference is night and day.”

Breakthrough Health & Fitness Integration

In a surprise announcement that expands AirPods Pro beyond audio, Apple revealed the AirPods Pro 3 now includes heart rate sensing during workouts – positioning the earbuds as a comprehensive fitness device.

“More people work out with AirPods Pro than any other headphones in the world,” Apple stated during the presentation. The new health capabilities build on this reality with hardware specifically designed for fitness tracking.

Apple’s Smallest Heart Rate Sensor:

The company custom-built what they describe as “Apple’s smallest heart rate sensor” integrated directly into the AirPods Pro 3 design. Machine learning algorithms combine data from the sensors and accelerometers to deliver precise heart rate measurements.

AI-Powered Activity Tracking:

Perhaps most impressive is the new on-device AI model for activity and calorie tracking, trained from “more than 50 million hours of data from the Apple Heart and Movement Study” – described as one of the largest studies of its kind with over 250,000 participants.

Comprehensive Workout Experience:

The integration extends to iPhone’s Fitness app, where users can now “track up to 50 different workout types” using only the AirPods Pro 3. This represents a significant expansion of Apple’s fitness ecosystem beyond the Apple Watch.

The feature includes integration with Apple Intelligence for motivational audio experiences called “Workout Buddy,” creating a more engaging fitness experience directly through the earbuds.

Third-Party Developer Integration:

Apple is opening new APIs that allow fitness developers like Ladder to incorporate key health metrics into their apps, expanding the ecosystem beyond Apple’s own fitness offerings.

Extended Battery Life for All-Day Performance

Apple delivered significant battery improvements across the board with the AirPods Pro 3:

Music with ANC: Extended from 6 hours to 8 hours on a single charge
Transparency Mode: “10 hours” for hearing aid users (4 hours more than previous generation)
Long-Haul Ready: Apple specifically mentions the battery will “take you through that transatlantic flight while listening to music with active noise cancellation”

The battery improvements address one of the most common user requests while maintaining the compact form factor that makes AirPods Pro portable.

Pricing and Availability

Despite all the revolutionary improvements – from custom acoustic architecture to heart rate monitoring to extended battery life – Apple announced the AirPods Pro 3 will maintain the same $249 price point as the previous generation.

This aggressive pricing strategy positions the AirPods Pro 3 as exceptional value, delivering flagship-level improvements without the typical price increase associated with major generational upgrades.

Avatr Vision Xpectra is a Limousine-Inspired EV that Outshines the Phantom

Cars powered by electric or hybrid powertrains are the way to go for the future. Perhaps the perfect opportunity for brands to superimpose the futuristic design with the eco-friendly aesthetic in their concept designs. Mercedes-Benz took the bold step with the Vision AVTR paving way for other contraptions like the one by Lazzarini Design Studio and Alfa Romeo  . Now Avatr, a Chinese automotive manufacturer, wants to take the swanky concept car designs beyond the sedans, hatchbacks, and coupes. Designed in collaboration with Changan, CATL, and Huawei, the EV is right at the cusp of cutting-edge tech.

They showcased the Vision Xpectra at the 2025 Munich Motor Show, and unsurprisingly, it was a showstopper. The reason, well, the concept car is an elongated, comfort-laden EV meant to be chauffeur-driven. Clearly, the concept is targeted towards the elite class who don’t want to burn unnecessarily on a Rolls-Royce. Talking of which, the Vision Xpectra is longer than the Phantom. The car comes with an emotional intelligence feature that illuminates the body pieces softly to greet the driver.

Designer: Avatr

Measuring 19 feet long, it has a wheelbase spanning 3,450 mm, a width of 2,132 mm, and a low height of 1,405 mm. Those dimensions imply a very sports ride experience, which is complemented by the exterior design honed by the panoramic glass roof that extends the whole way back. The car is designed by Nader Faghihzadeh in Munich to be tough while retaining the flexibility of the body panels. The flowing silhouette leading to the sculpted fenders is complemented by the large alloy wheels that bring an element of sexy persona. On the front, the split LED headlights run along the bumper’s profile and then merge into the lower end. Another set of headlights runs over and along the hood and the fenders. The overall design language is dubbed “The Energy Force,” which redefined clear lines and power shapes.

The interior of the limousine-inspired concept is as swanky as you would expect. The suicide doors open up to reveal the spacious cabin, which is a lounge-like space for the most luxurious travel on wheels. That luxury element is present in the upholstered, rich leather seats done in straw marquetry. The transparent inflatable cushions made out of velvet have ambient lights that sync with your mood. The dashboard and the front console are flush with transparent displays that seem to levitate. There are lamella sculptures on the doors that flow into the interior, most evident when the door is opened or closed.

Central to the visual aesthetics is the Vortex AI assistant that interacts using light and motion. Another touch-controlled control unit dubbed Cortex is positioned on the central console to give the riders full control of this beautiful machine in motion. The opulence is matched by the furniture, champagne glasses, and carry-ons for an altogether different experience. There is no word about the specifications or the release timeline of the Vision Xpectra, but the automaker has hinted about the 17-model lineup of the EV by 2030.
