When Emma and Blake decided to trade Seattle’s urban landscape for the mountain vistas of Whitefish, Montana, they carried with them a vision that would honor both Emma’s Swedish roots and Blake’s passion for energy efficiency. Named after their young daughter, whose blonde hair perfectly embodies her Swedish heritage, Freja House stands as more than just a family residence. The project represents a thoughtful fusion of Old World craftsmanship and modern sustainability practices, creating a home that serves as both a comfortable family sanctuary and a testament to responsible building.

Love Schack Architecture embraced the challenge of creating a structure that would satisfy Blake’s technical expertise as a mechanical engineer while celebrating Emma’s cultural background. The architects developed a design that prioritizes energy efficiency without sacrificing the warm, inviting aesthetic that defines Scandinavian architecture. Rather than simply applying Nordic aesthetics as surface decoration, they created a home that genuinely reflects the family’s values and lifestyle.

The home’s exterior immediately announces its Nordic influences through clean lines, a classic gable roof, and most notably, its distinctive cladding. The architects specified prefabricated wood panels treated with järnvitriol, a traditional Swedish iron sulfate technique that accelerates weathering while enhancing durability. This treatment gives the house its characteristic weathered appearance, allowing it to age gracefully while maintaining structural integrity against Montana’s harsh winters.

Inside, the design team created spaces that maximize both natural light and mountain views. Large windows framed in wood flood the interior with daylight while establishing strong visual connections to the surrounding pine forests and distant peaks. The layout incorporates generous storage solutions and a practical mudroom, acknowledging the realities of mountain living where outdoor gear and seasonal equipment require dedicated space.

The home’s energy performance reflects Blake’s professional commitment to efficiency. While achieving full Passive House certification proved challenging due to site constraints, the house excels in airtightness and insulation, keeping energy costs remarkably low throughout the year. An accessory dwelling unit above the garage adds versatility to the property, providing space for guests or potential rental income, demonstrating the architects’ understanding of modern housing needs where flexibility has become essential.

The project stands as a compelling example of how thoughtful architecture can honor cultural heritage while addressing contemporary environmental concerns. Freja House succeeds because it tells a genuine story, emerging from the authentic intersection of the family’s personal narrative and the architects’ skilled craftsmanship. The result is architecture that feels both deeply rooted in Scandinavian tradition and perfectly suited to its Montana setting, offering a model for how homes can embody meaning beyond mere shelter while treading lightly on the land.

Concept cooker is an all-in-one kitchen vision for modern homes

Vuk Dragović’s latest concept for Nanlong imagines a single countertop appliance that can grill, steam, bake and host a hot‑pot dinner. The design, created for the dynamic cooking culture of China, showcases how everyday meals and entertaining could be simplified with one versatile unit. The centerpiece of the concept is a clean, user‑friendly control panel. In a few taps a user could select a cooking mode, set temperature and adjust the timer, eliminating the need for multiple knobs or confusing menus. Its compact footprint is meant to sit comfortably on most countertops, freeing up space that would otherwise be occupied by separate appliances.

Interchangeable accessories illustrate the breadth of functionality. Snap‑in grill racks would give meats and vegetables a smoky finish, while steaming baskets preserve nutrients in seafood and dumplings. Baking trays would transform the unit into a miniature oven for pastries, breads and casseroles, and a dedicated hot‑pot insert would bring the communal dining experience to the home, allowing diners to share a simmering broth at the table. The concept shows all accessories attaching quickly, keeping setup and cleanup straightforward.

From a product architecture viewpoint, Dragović guided material, color and finish (CMF) decisions to balance visual appeal with manufacturability. By standardising components across the four cooking functions, Nanlong could reduce the number of unique parts, simplifying assembly lines and lowering potential production costs. This approach would support scalability, allowing the appliance to reach a broader market without sacrificing quality if it ever moves from concept to reality.

Market potential appears strong, as consumers increasingly look for space‑saving solutions that do not compromise capability. The Nanlong concept aligns with the growing demand for multifunctional kitchen gadgets that support healthy cooking methods like steaming and grilling while also catering to social dining traditions like hot‑pot. Its intuitive design lowers the barrier for users who might be intimidated by more complex devices, broadening its appeal across age groups and cooking skill levels.

In practice, the imagined Nanlong cooker could transform a typical weeknight dinner. A user might start with a quick steam of frozen vegetables, switch to a grill mode for searing salmon, then finish with a bake setting for a sweet‑potato side dish—all without moving pots or turning on separate appliances. Overall, Vuk Dragović’s concept presents a thoughtful blend of function, form and affordability. By consolidating four core cooking methods into a single, elegant unit, the Nanlong concept points to a future where modern kitchens maximise space, reduce clutter and enjoy versatile cooking experiences, all within a single, well‑designed appliance.

Ferrari brings back testarossa car with 849

 

Ferrari unveils the 849 Testarossa, a revival of the company’s 1984 car, now a hybrid plug-in super sports berlinetta. Replacing the SF90 Stradale model, the sports car derives its name from Maranello’s history, Testa Rossa, which was first used on the 500 TR in 1956 to describe the color of the cam covers of some of Ferrari’s high-performance vehicles before being given its own proper car with the 1984 Testarossa.

 

Today, the once wedge-shaped vehicle gets a modern makeover, all the while keeping the familiar silhouette and look of its elder sibling. The Ferrari Styling Center, led by Flavio Manzoni, has worked on the design of the Ferrari 849 Testarossa car, starting with the lines that run vertically and horizontally across surfaces. They form geometric patterns, with the sharp edges separating different surface areas while the smooth curves connect the sharp edges.

Tails that replicate the 512 S race car’s design

 

Starting at the front of the Ferrari 849 Testarossa car, the front bumper connects the headlights of the vehicle and creates a bridge shape. There’s a black splitter that sits below the bumper, and here, the body-colored flicks are also extended. Two tail sections appear at the rear, a means to replicate the 512 S race car’s design. An active wing moves between the tails, which can change its position in a second, and the center houses the three round exhausts. Ferrari forms the aluminum panels around the 849 Testarossa car separately, having machines cut them to exact shapes and workers weld them to the chassis frame.

 

It is this aluminum that the team uses for the door, designed with 3D curves and doubling as an air duct to allow the air to flow from it to the intercooler. It also has a main crease line, which runs from front to back, and black intake vents sit in the door side. Even the wheels are made from aluminum with diamond-cut surfaces covering the wheel faces and air channels running through the wheel spokes. The windshield visibly curves around the cabin, and the side windows fit flush with door surfaces. As for the rear window, it is integrated with the tail sections.

Inside the Ferrari 849 Testarossa car, the dashboard has two parts, with the upper one floating above the lower part. A band connects them, and it also holds the controls and screens. In the upper dashboard, the C-shaped vents sit, enclosed by aluminum frames. These vents direct the air into the cabin. Two sail shapes hold the controls in the lower dashboard, one for the passenger side and the other for the driver. Then, there’s a tunnel that runs between the seats, holding the secondary functions and using less space than before. Each door has one sail shape, which anchors one speaker covered with an aluminum grille.

 

Ferrari makes two seat types for the 849 Testarossa car: the comfort seats use fabric or leather, while the racing seats use carbon fiber backs with side bolsters. Since the door panels use less width at the bottom, they create more legroom, resulting in the rear seats having more space, too. On the dashboard, the driver and the front passenger have their own screens, both of which show the vehicle’s driving info. There’s another variant of the Ferrari 849 Testarossa car, and it goes by the name and style of the Assetto Fiorano.

The Assetto Fiorano is an optional trim level of the 849 Testarossa, which has components that are not present in the red-colored vehicle. The model sheds 30 kilos from the original variant’s weight because it uses composite materials like carbon fiber and titanium, which are significantly lighter than the ones used in the primary car. Inside, the lightweight tubular seats upholstered in black Alcantara, which shaves 18 kilos of weight from the standard seats, are some of the specific components for the Assetto Fiorano, as well as the 20-inch carbon-fiber wheels that reduce mass and improve responsiveness when accelerating and braking.

 

The front of this model has larger flicks too, and its underfloor comes with an additional pair of vortex generators, which increase the airflow for aerodynamics. At the back, there are no longer twin tails, unlike in the Ferrari 849 Testarossa car, but two twin wings set between two vertical endplates. They help triple the vertical downforce without significantly affecting the aerodynamic drag. The Assetto Fiorano option can be completed with a livery in Bianco Cervino or Rossa Corsa, a reinterpretation of the classic double longitudinal stripes that start at the end of the bonnet, cross the roof, and then end on the rear deck.

Designer turns a Fader into a quirky 3-seater chair for the musically inclined

The master of quirky furniture design is back with yet another visual pun that you can sit on! For the uninitiated, Muddycap’s instagram is perhaps one of the most creative parts of the internet, as this mysterious faceless artist turns regular objects into chairs. We’ve covered a few of our favorites in the past (you can see them here), and while all his designs usually make me smile, this one hits close to home as a music lover.

The Fader Chair is instantly relatable to anyone who’s ever looked at a producer’s deck at a music studio or a live event. The three-seater features multiple channels with the iconic fader slider that works as the seat. You lean back on the hardware itself, which models itself almost exactly on a multi-track fader, with three channels, mute and solo buttons for activating/silencing them, and a few other buttons along with a master volume knob. Now I only wonder whether the chair’s height can be adjusted by sliding the fader up or down!

Designer: Muddycap

A lot of Muddycap’s designs lean into realism, creating an object that feels larger than life, but is, actually just furniture. The Fader Chair does this too, and while I personally don’t like the overt realism, the idea absolutely has my heart! I could totally imagine the 3-seater being at multiple levels, creating a chair that’s either designed for a family of three, or a two-seater with the center fader being raised to the height of being a table or armrest.

Details show Muddycap’s creativity even further. Most faders are rectangular shaped, but have a slight concavity that lets your fingertips rest in them comfortably. This concavity is a small touch, but Muddycap retains the detail on the chair, creating a mild divet that’s perfect for the backside to rest on! I assume the mute and solo buttons on the top are cushions too, providing a perfect resting spot for your shoulder blades as you relax on the Fader Chair!

Located in the historic district of Miragaia, Porto, the Monte dos Judeus residential renovation project offers a contemporary take on the traditional terraces that define the area’s hillside landscape. Inspired by the organic layering of platforms that shapes Miragaia’s built environment, the design by António Bessa Cruz Architects and José Carlos Cruz Arquitecto unfolds through a sequence of stepped concrete levels, each hosting a separate apartment. These platforms follow the natural topography while maximizing views of the Douro River and surrounding roofs. Each apartment sits on its own level, with private outdoor spaces and a close connection to the landscape, recalling the terraced gardens and backyards that once covered the hillside.

Monte dos Judeus’ intervention is built upon a pre-existing structure that had fallen into ruin, from which the original facade tiles had been carefully removed for later reapplication. For the street-facing elevation, the strategy was to reconstruct the original facade and add an abstract volume whose cladding of corrugated metal sheets is highly characteristic of this area. The collaborative team between creative practice António Bessa Cruz Architects and design studio José Carlos Cruz Arquitecto adopts a sober, contemporary language that respects the site’s scale without relying on imitation. The choice of materials, volumes, and the back facade treatment reflects a sensitive reading of the context and a strong connection to the site’s memory.

Hyundai’s latest vision for electric mobility, the Concept Three, debuted at IAA Mobility 2025, marking a significant step toward the brand’s electrified future. The Concept Three stands out with a sleek design that blends futuristic elements with practicality, hinting strongly at the production model expected to launch under the Ioniq sub-brand. It reflects the South Korean manufacturer’s commitment to advancing electric vehicle technology while offering a compelling alternative to traditional car designs.

Concept Three is a fully electric compact hatchback designed to offer versatility and performance suitable for urban and suburban driving. Its exterior design embraces clean lines, a minimalist front with slim, horizontal lighting, and a distinctive silhouette that emphasizes aerodynamics. Hyundai calls its exterior design the “Art of Steel,” referring to the material’s strength and flexibility, which allows for bold yet precise bodywork. The design also nods to the cultural impact of science fiction, with some observers comparing its aesthetic to the ships seen in the Star Wars universe, reinforcing its futuristic appeal.

Pop-up Corner Lamp is a Minimalist and Tactile Take on Accent Lighting

Smart lighting has taken over our homes with promises of infinite color options, app controls, and automated schedules that supposedly make life easier and more convenient. Yet for all their digital sophistication, these systems often feel cold and disconnected from the spaces they illuminate. César Moncaut’s Pop-up Lamp takes a refreshingly analog approach, proving that sometimes the most elegant lighting solutions come from folded paper, solid wood, and simple manual interaction.

The lamp’s design centers around a precision-cut paper shade that pops into a three-dimensional geometric form when assembled by hand, not unlike children’s pop-up books, hence the name. The folded paper creates clean, architectural lines that feel both modern and timeless, while the cardboard “cover” gives it a bit of rigidity, enough to hold its place on walls or even in corners.

The design draws clear inspiration from Bauhaus geometry with its bold rectangular form and clean lines, rendered here in a striking blue that immediately signals this isn’t your typical desk accessory. Two vertical columns support rotating light panels that can be independently adjusted, allowing two users working from opposite sides of the same table to each have their own customized illumination.

Modern smartphones have become frustratingly similar, haven’t they? Every flagship device feels like a variation on the same glass rectangle theme, with manufacturers competing on camera megapixels and processor speeds while completely ignoring the tactile satisfaction that made classic phones so memorable. YouTuber Marcin Plaza apparently got tired of this sameness and decided to build something genuinely different by combining a broken Galaxy Z Flip 5 with a BlackBerry Q10 keyboard.

Plaza’s DIY slider phone project has gone viral across major tech sites for good reason, representing both impressive engineering and a nostalgic callback to when phones had personality. The build process involved salvaging components from a damaged Z Flip 5, integrating a physical BlackBerry keyboard, and creating a custom magnetic slider mechanism that echoes classic phones like the Nokia N97. The result runs Android with full keyboard functionality, creating a device that feels both retro and surprisingly modern.

The magnetic slider provides that tactile click that smartphone users have been missing for over a decade.
