For ice, the same touch releases a batch of crystal‑clear cubes that have been formed using purified water, ensuring that the ice is free from off‑flavors or impurities. The system’s temperature controls are calibrated to work efficiently year‑round, providing hot water in winter and refreshing cold water or ice during the summer months.

Maintenance has also been simplified. The removable water tank and ice storage compartment can be taken out for cleaning without the need for specialized tools. Salut, Ça va, c’est moi opened this week at Friedman Benda, filling the New York gallery with the warm glow of Carmen D’Apollonio’s newest illuminated sculptures. For this solo show, the Swiss-born, Los Angeles–based artist dots the space with playful artworks of handmade clay and blown glass, each of which shows either a drooping gesture or the imprint of the human hand. designboom visited the gallery to explore Carmen D’Apollonio’s Salut, Ça va, c’est moi, which will be on view from September 11th — October 16th, 2025.

Carmen D’Apollonio’s new work, currently on view at Friedman Benda, pushes further into material experimentation. The artist‘s ceramic bases still bear the slight irregularities of hand-building, but this exhibition introduces sculpted glass shades that catch and scatter light in unexpected patterns. It was noted at the gallery that each glass element required custom molds and weeks of slow cooling, a process that gives the finished pieces their distinctive clarity and weight. Together, clay and glass create a dialogue between opacity and transparency that unfolds with every step a visitor takes.

 

On the whole, the installation is like a silent performance. Lamps lean into walls, sprawl across pedestals, or hover from the ceiling, their silhouettes casting shifting reflections across the concrete floor. One piece, ‘Again I go unnoticed’, bends outward as if caught mid-breath, while the glass shade of ‘It’s All a Big Mystery’ refracts light into soft edges that draw the eye beyond the fixture itself. The effect is intimate rather than theatrical, encouraging slow looking and a sense of shared presence with the objects.

Language is another material in D’Apollonio’s practice. Works titled ‘Why fall in love when you can’t fall asleep’ or ‘If you ever have forever’ offer flashes of humor and vulnerability, small confidences that meet the viewer halfway. ‘I like when a lamp feels like it’s talking to you,’ she says, her comment emphasizing how these pieces bridge function and personality.

 

Despite their sculptural energy, the lamps remain practical. The team at Friedman Benda notes that the bases and shades can easily be mixed and matched, and that the artist’s LA studio is filled with variations. Meanwhile, the wiring is discreet, and the switches are hidden but accessible. Their presence reminds us of the functional opportunities for such whimsical works of art and design.

A Designey Ultrasonic Cleaner for Retainers, Mouthguards or Nightguards

If you use a dental retainer or sleep with a nightguard, you know they can get funky pretty quickly. If you don’t properly clean it, you can do more than give yourself bad breath: James, the founder of a company called Zima Dental, actually gave himself strep throat from wearing an inadequately-cleaned retainer.

James subsequently founded the company to create this Dental Pod, which cleans oral devices ultrasonically, using just water:

“The Dental Pod uses high-frequency 42,000 Hz ultrasonic waves to vibrate the solution and produce millions of nano-scale bubbles. These bubbles rapidly collapse, releasing a large amount of energy, breaking down bacteria and plaque while being non abrasive to your dental appliance. Ultrasonic cleaning technology is safe and reliable and has been widely used in laboratory, commercial, industrial and other fields for decades.”

Gabriel Chaile’s Marianne Boesky Gallery exhibit blends indigenous form, protest, and storytelling

We love exhibits that are able to blend together culture, politics, and storytelling seamlessly into eye-catching visual representations. Argentine artist Gabriel Chaile (b. 1985, San Miguel de Tucumán) makes his New York exhibit debut exhibit at the Marianne Boesky Gallery with “Esto es América, o qual é o limite?”. The exhibition features a striking suite of adobe sculptures, charcoal drawings, and protest photographs that fuse indigenous aesthetics with contemporary political commentary.

Chaile’s work is built on what he calls the “genealogy of form,” the idea that visual motifs recur across history, gaining fresh meaning each time they reappear. In this show he reinterprets the ceremonial vessels and architectural gestures of Northeast Argentina’s native communities, using the earthy medium of adobe to create large‑scale pieces that feel both ancient and urgent. The central sculpture: a towering form that hints at a lizard or bird caught in transformation, commands the gallery space. It is surrounded by four anthropomorphic “bread‑oven” shapes, together suggesting a procession, a march, or a protest.

The sculptures were built on site in New York, allowing the material to absorb the city’s energy while retaining the tactile qualities of traditional earthenware. Their surfaces are covered in dense black line drawings that interweave symbols, maps, and abstract marks. The intricate networks make each piece a visual encyclopedia of memory, inviting viewers to linger and decode hidden stories.

A key inspiration for the exhibition was Chaile’s observation of a No Kings Day protest while in residence at Tinworks Art in Bozeman, Montana. Photographs and charcoal sketches documenting the event line the walls, providing a contextual backdrop for the sculptures. In the protest, participants stood quietly on sidewalks, holding ambiguous signs that spanned ages, from children to elders. Chaile recalls feeling a subtle alignment with the gathering, not necessarily with its political stance but with its broader call for inclusive coexistence.

The charcoal drawings were executed directly on canvas attached to the walls while the adobe pieces dried, allowing the artist’s hand to echo the same motifs that appear on the sculptures. This parallel process creates a dialogue between the three‑dimensional forms and the two‑dimensional marks, reinforcing the notion that history and present moment are intertwined.

The bilingual title deepens the conceptual layer. “Esto es América” declares in Spanish, “This is America,” while the Portuguese phrase “o qual é o limite?” asks, “What is the limit?” The juxtaposition of Spanish and Portuguese, which are languages that colonized the continents, mirrors the exhibition’s exploration of borders, limits, and shared futures. Chaile’s work asks viewers to consider where the boundaries of cultural identity end and where the possibility for collective belonging begins.

“Esto es América, o qual é o limite?” offers a compelling blend of material craft, anthropological insight, and timely protest imagery. It invites the general audience to reflect on how ancient forms can speak to modern struggles, and how art can serve as both a memorial and a catalyst for change. The exhibition runs at Marianne Boesky Gallery through October 31, 2025.

Build the legendary Suzuki Hayabusa 25th Anniversary bike with this 1,043-piece set

LEGO Technics has changed the complexion of LEGO building for adults who love the intricacies of putting together their unique creations. The ones high up on my list are the Speed Champions and automotive-inspired designs. Whenever a LEGO bike set is made official, it creates unprecedented excitement among collectors and motorheads. Take, for instance, the Ducati Panigale V4 S or the BMW M 1000 RR bike. These detailed sets by LEGO are unmissable for a fan’s garage shelf.

When I first laid my eyes on this Suzuki Hayabusa, it looked like another creation from the house of LEGO. However, it is a collaborative set designed by Suzuki and CaDA, a building set maker. Dubbed the CaDA Suzuki Hayabusa Building Set (C64051), this one is for diehard Hayabusa fans. Until now, there hasn’t been a Hayabusa LEGO set on the market for fans, which is surprising, and CaDA has grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

This 1,043-piece model is a highly detailed miniature version of the 25th anniversary edition Hayabusa from 2023 which is a cosmetic upgrade to the standard version. When released, the bike had a unique Glass Blaze Orange and Glass Sparkle Black paint scheme, anodized gold parts, a 25th-anniversary emblem, a 3D Suzuki logo, and original engravings on the muffler and drive chain. The LEGO set on offer by CaDA replicates those details to perfection. Limited to 300 units, the anniversary edition bike had a price tag of around $18,000. Given its exclusivity, that price should be bloated now, given how many collectors would want this in their garage.

Although the 1:6 scale buildable set in question is not limited to a number, it should also carry that lucrative appeal. What’s surprising is the approximate $42 price of the set, which is quite less than what LEGO would have priced. Just for reference, the Panigale and M1000 RR sets cost $200 and $300, respectively. Returning to the detailed design of the LEGO Suzuki Hayabusa, it features a custom-molded nose cone that houses the windshield and headlight. A sense of realism is maintained with the functional spring-actuated suspension systems, steerable handlebars, 3-speed gear shifter, and the replica 1340cc liquid-cooled, inline-four, DOHC engine. The Technic-like details flow to the twin exhausts, side mirror, saddle, wide rear wheel, and ventilated disc brakes.

On either side of the fairing, the Hayabusa character is etched, and the Suzuki logo on the gas tank, license plate, and the front cowl enhance the visual realism. A slightly different anniversary logo on the gas tank takes this build closer to the real thing. Once you put together the replica bike measuring 13.23 x 5.67 x 8.19 inches, it can be shown off on an exclusive collaboration plaque.

Using a Robot Arm to Create a Rotary Texturing Process

This texture below is what the Japanese call naguri, which literally translates to “beaten,” revealing its metalworking roots. In wood, the texture is achieved with an adze or gouge.

Woodworker Takurou Seino invented a router jig to produce the texture using electricity.

Leigh Aitken, an Australian design engineer and robotics specialist, has taken it even further. His company, Twig&Bot, specializes in CNC-created furniture and building elements. In the studio, Aitken’s been getting the ‘bot to produce naguri-like work:

“Experimenting with a parametric random scalloped texture generator I’ve been working on for the robot. This is the first trial straight off the cutter (no sanding). The lemon scented gum cut incredibly cleanly.”

“Some more robot texturing experiments. Full chaos (top) and escalating chaos (bottom). Looking forward to applying these to some furniture pieces and sculptural elements soon.”

As of yet there’s no finished product, just the teaser below. Aitken’s figured out how to produce the texture in a way we haven’t seen before: Cylindrically.

More Design Tricks for Tight Living Spaces: A Camper with a Sliding Bathroom

In an earlier post, we showed you four nifty interior design tricks by German RV manufacturer Bürstner. One of them was this bathroom where the sink slides over the toilet, turning the space into a shower.

They’ve pushed this idea even further with their Habiton camper van.

Now the entire bathroom itself slides, in addition to just the sink. When the bathroom is in its forward position, it provides enough space behind it to have two full-length twin beds.

There’s also a third sleeping location within the heated pop-up roof.

Sliding the bathroom rearward provides the space to deploy the two-person dining set-up.

Obviously this requires folding one of the beds out of the way.

Within the bathroom itself, when it’s time to take a shower, the sink folds up, and the toilet slides beneath the under-bed space behind the bathroom.

It’s a pretty smart arrangement; inside a camper you’ll eat, sleep and use the bathroom, but never at the same time. Similarly you’ll use the toilet and the shower, but never at the same time. It makes sense that the fixture not being used at the moment should temporarily disappear, to make space for what is being used.
