Our Forest by CTAA ARCHITECT / LAB explores how a single expansive roof can unify diverse spatial functions. The building in Taiwan employs exposed concrete load-bearing walls combined with cypress CLT (cross-laminated timber) roof panels. A large curved roof, rotated 45 degrees, interacts with the orthogonal interior layout to generate varied double-pitched roof forms. This creates dynamic visual effects, with shifting patterns of light and shadow across the spaces.

 

The design introduces new material applications and construction techniques using both CLT and GLT (glued laminated timber). These methods allow for extended cantilevers and greater roof curvature, producing a roof that spans 16 meters by 18 meters. The approach redefines conventional timber construction, combining architectural expression with structural performance. To address site conditions, the single-story volume is kept slightly lower than surrounding houses, but the roof is raised to 5.8 meters. Different roof heights and layered eaves add vertical depth, ensuring the structure maintains presence without appearing diminished. Exposing the wooden framework further emphasizes the scale and craftsmanship of the roof.

The hyperbolic GLT roof is constructed from 396 individual timber pieces, each with a unique curvature, and connected by over 3,000 steel joints. Supported by 46 CLT pitched roof segments measuring 2 by 3 meters, the structure achieves a balance between linear and planar elements. The bowl-shaped canopy rests on the perimeter roof edges without additional columns, creating multiple shaded zones and framing distinctive spatial experiences beneath.

 

The design team at CTAA ARCHITECT / LAB conceived the structure as an interconnected environment, in which the expansive roof links the building’s different areas into a cohesive whole. Its scale and geometry establish a sense of continuity, while its materiality and construction techniques demonstrate the potential of contemporary timber architecture.

Minimalist flip clock concept brings retro charm for modern desks

The classic Hitachi DW221 flip clock, a staple of 1970s office desks, is enjoying a fresh reinterpretation as a design concept. Its mechanical flip mechanism, bright orange digits and simple rectangular case have become icons of mid‑century style. A recent portfolio piece presents a minimalist version of this vintage timepiece, using pastel tones and clean lines to fit today’s streamlined workspaces.

The original DW221 was celebrated for its reliable flip mechanism and bold visual presence. Built in Japan in the mid‑1970s, it featured a sturdy plastic housing, a split‑flap display that turned each minute, and a distinctive orange‑white color scheme that made the changing numbers easy to read from a distance . Its design was both functional and playful, a hallmark of the era’s consumer electronics. Over the decades, the DW221 has become a collector’s item, symbolizing a time when analog motion added character to everyday gadgets.

The project, titled “Minimalist Flip Clock: A Modern Take on Hitachi DW221,” emphasizes realistic lighting, texture detail and composition to highlight the clock’s sleek new look . The designer simulated realistic shadows and subtle reflections, giving the clock a tactile, almost photographic quality. By focusing on lighting that mimics natural office illumination, the render conveys how the clock would look on a real desktop, inviting viewers to imagine it as a functional piece rather than just a visual study.

Because it is a concept, no physical prototype has been produced. The project serves primarily to explore how classic mechanisms can be integrated into today’s design language. The flip cards still rotate in the same clockwise cascade, preserving the satisfying “tick‑tock” rhythm that made the DW221 a favorite. We just have to wait a couple more months for the fifth and final season, although it’s divided into three parts, so we have to be even more patient. In the meantime, you can already start planning your snack situation for your binge‑watching sessions, as Williams Sonoma has announced a Stranger Things limited‑edition collection.

Since this Netflix hit relies heavily on nostalgia and all things ’80s and retro, the collection of cookies, candies, and kitchen tools also follows that theme. So if you were born that time or if you just enjoy all things from that decade, this collection would be right up your alley. The main draw is the Stranger Things Advent Calendar, which helps you count down to the Christmas season and is packed with ’80s‑themed sweets and treats that would feel at home in Hawkins, Indiana.

Handheld gaming PCs have become incredibly capable over the past few years, but they’ve always occupied an awkward middle ground between tablets and laptops. Most handhelds excel at gaming but struggle with productivity tasks that require extended typing or multitasking, while traditional gaming laptops offer better keyboards and screens but sacrifice the portability and flexibility that makes handhelds appealing in the first place.

The Lenovo Legion Go stands out in this crowded field thanks to its removable controllers that transform it from a handheld console into a Windows tablet. MysteriousAlarm897 on Reddit saw this modularity as an opportunity to push the concept further. KAPIA installation spans the Sainte-Thérèse du Québec footbridge

 

KAPIA is a site-specific timber and mirror installation designed by GRRIZ for Annecy Paysages 2025, located on the Sainte-Thérèse du Québec footbridge along the Thiou river in Annecy, France. The project seeks to transform a simple point of passage into a place of pause, encounter, and contemplation. The design draws inspiration from the kapia of traditional Ottoman bridges in the Balkans, architectural pauses at the center of bridges, historically conceived as civic spaces for exchange and dialogue. On the existing footbridge, two fixed benches were already placed at the midpoint, discreetly suggesting a moment of rest. GRRIZ chose to enhance this latent potential by constructing an architectural canopy that defines the space, offers shelter, and amplifies one’s perceptual engagement with the landscape.

The structure is entirely built from Douglas fir timber, assembled as a lightweight frame that rests delicately on the existing bridge without altering its geometry or circulation. This reversible approach was a technical challenge for GRRIZ creative studio, requiring precise detailing to anchor the intervention while respecting the existing infrastructure. The timber elements are finished in a coral-toned protective coating, chosen to establish a chromatic resonance with both the urban fabric and the natural vegetation of the site. Above, the canopy is clad in mirrored dibond panels, a reflective composite material that captures and refracts the changing qualities of sky, light, and water. These mirrored surfaces generate shifting, almost painterly reflections that evolve with weather conditions and the presence of passersby, introducing a dynamic, expressionist dimension to the work.

KAPIA thus emerges as a functional sculpture: a suspended threshold, open to all, belonging to none. It invites pedestrians and cyclists to slow down, sit, observe, and reconnect with the river and the city. The project was developed by GRRIZ following the invitation of curator David Moinard, and produced by Bonlieu Scène nationale Annecy.

The design prioritizes clean geometry and an architectural presence, allowing HomeBox to blend with a wide range of housing styles without appearing intrusive. Inside, a weight sensor detects package placement and triggers communication with the companion mobile app. Users receive instant notifications and can track delivery status remotely. To provide immediate visual feedback, LED indicators are embedded on the exterior: white signals readiness, green confirms delivery, and red alerts when the box is full.
