A Hot Wheels inspired six-wheeled cab fit for Mad Max franchise

There are eye-popping restomods, and then there are ones that are in a league of their own. This one by Aaron Buck of Milk Man Concepts is surely something that you don’t see on an ordinary day. Meet the Cab Over Evolved, built out of a Ford pickup cab having a 5.9-liter Cummins 6BT turbodiesel inline-six salvaged from a 1991 Dodge D250 as its guts. This thing looks straight out of the Mad Max world, fused with Hot Wheels action. I still can’t imagine this is not an AI-generated vehicle design; in fact, it is a road-legal monster ready to take on anything in its path.

The six-wheeled cab-over-engine custom truck rides on front 24-inch wheels, and 28-inch wheels on the rear for more stability. You could compare it to a flatbed trailer in a small package but with the same aggressive stance, and of course, the intimidating look. When initially created in 2021, inspired by the Hot Wheels Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth, this behemoth was called the 1991 Dodge D200. Aaron wanted to make this one street-legal, hence the proportions of a toy car slathered onto the robust Ford steel cab. Later on, this monster came to be known as Cab Over Evolved.

Designer: Milk Man Concepts

Starting from the raw steel body of the Ford, he shortened the chassis roof for a low-slung look. Then he extended the body into new sections and modified the fenders for the new body shape. The added body section was secured using running boards for the structural integrity of the final unified body. Mind you, all these body parts are made out of steel, making the vehicle a moving rampage machine if some protagonist takes the wheel. Other than the main body chassis and the engine, the donor RAM and Dodge components were used to build this vehicle. The Hotrod cab has a tubular chassis and independent front suspension for a smoother ride. To secure the twin rear axles, there is a four-link suspension system, and the rig supplies the power via a 46RH four-speed automatic gearbox. A thing this big requires potent braking power; therefore, the disk brakes are not ordinary either.

The wheel rims on this one have pointed steel teeth, which further justifies the Mad Max-inspired persona. Cab Over Evolved has a triangular grille upfront, complemented by the vertical guards and front bumpers done in metallic orange. The vehicle kind of reminds me of the Jeepers Creepers movie, and a sequel to that crazy flick would do with this monster on the road. Moving onto the rear, the elongated cab has truck-like fenders which engulf the whole of the wheel arches. Taking it over bumpy roads or speed breakers could be a handful by the looks of it. The oval taillights and the body carry a similar intimidating presence, done in a rustic paint job.

On the inside, the six-wheeled cab has a custom dashboard with an elliptical, centrally mounted instrument panel. Everything is kept very minimal with a retro flair, be it the gear knob in metallic silver, steering wheel in the same orange as the exterior, or the elliptical seats in matte leather orange. The doors carry the same persona, making it a handsome affair on the inside. At the time of writing, the Cab Over Evolved has a bid of up to $137,000 with a few more days to go. Clearly, this thing will go for a high price given its unique road presence that guarantees more than just second looks.

Peru-based practice Roman Bauer Arquitectos takes to Lima’s bohemian district of Barranco to design a studio, workshop, and exhibition space for photographers. The project is organized around two landscaped courtyards that frame a lofty central workspace. Visitors enter through a forecourt where cantilevered planters infuse the space with greenery before reaching the main hall. Sliding doors retract fully to create a continuous flow from the entry courtyard through the interior and into a second sunlit garden at the rear.

 

This main space is joined by a small kitchen and two flexible rooms that function as more private offices or even temporary bedrooms for visiting artists. Only the bathrooms and a darkroom are fully enclosed, preserving the open, adaptable character of the plan. The layout supports both focused photographic work and the possibility of public gatherings or gallery-style installations.

With the structure of its photographers workshop, Roman Bauer Arquitectos combines reinforced concrete block walls with a timber roof supported by large steel trusses. The roofline folds gently, descending from the second-floor office toward the rear courtyard, and is punctuated by four rectangular skylights. These overhead apertures, fitted with operable upper windows on pulley systems, fill the studio with daylight and encourage cross-ventilation. The architects note that their proportions recall the lanterns and ceiling lights of Barranco’s traditional houses.

 

Huayruro wood, a common wood in Peru, is used extensively across carpentry elements, including partitions, framing, furniture, and the staircase to the upper level, lending a warm tonal contrast to the cool concrete walls. Inside, walls of exposed stone are smoothly finished, while the courtyard’s walls show a textured relief that doubles as a surface for hidden lighting or climbing plants.

Flooring throughout the first level is laid in handcrafted yellow terrazzo tiles that extend into the rear garden. There, a planter of concrete slats surrounds a ceibo tree, creating the atmosphere of an outdoor room. The success of the interiors lies in the contrast between the austere stone walls at eye-level and the complex, warm-toned structure which caps the space and draws the eye upward.

 

The project comes to life with its spatial sequencing, ambient sunlight, and a palette of expressive materials. Through its courtyards and finely tuned roof structure, Roman Bauer Arquitectos has created a workspace that is at once adaptable and quietly expressive, bringing a versatile setting for creative production as well as exhibitions. In this way, it serves the needs of both local and visiting photographers, and respects the artistic character of historic Barranco.

Here’s How They Clean the Balls in a Ball Pit

Ball pits, invented by designers Charlotte Rude and Hjördis Olsson-Une for Ikea in 1970, went on to become wildly popular. Fast food restaurants, amusement parks, play centers and community recreation facilities have all featured them.

To the wary parent, they seem like hotbeds of germs. Anecdotal stories (like these or these on Reddit, from people who worked at facilities with ball pits) of the slapdash way they’re cleaned—or not cleaned—don’t help the rumors:

– “A place I worked with a ball pit would just load up the balls in mesh bags and have one of the janitors drive through a car wash with the balls in the bed of their truck.”
– “I worked at this play place called Catch Air. We would clean the balls individually by hand every few weeks. Really shitty job.”
– “Sometimes little kids being little kids, there will be someone who’d poop or throw up in the ballpit. And a messy job too, its almost guaranteed you’ll get covered in it if you are the lucky one who goes in to fish out every ball.”
– “Babies will also chew and sneeze on everything, including the balls in the pit.”
– “When I worked at Chuck E Cheese we had a late night scheduled every six months to clean the ball pit. We would empty them all into bus tubs and run them thru the giant dishwasher. They smelled VERY strongly of urine, as I recall.”
– “Worked at McDonalds for years. The only time the ball pit got cleaned was when kids started coming out with poo on them.”
– “If you think they are nasty under normal circumstances, wait until they have about 12 years of dust sitting on them. The kind that gets sticky after awhile … Yeah it was as disgusting as you are picturing it.”

That said, ball pit cleaning machines do exist, and responsible facilities like TQ Playtopia in Oklahoma City use them regularly.

“Our amazing cleaning crew uses Tuesdays to deep clean the entire playground, and sanitize EVERYTHING,” the company writes. “Every ball from every pit gets run through our ball washer- that alone takes 5 hours!”

Hybrid Footwear Design: Combining the Best Parts of a Slipper and a Boot

Up until now, a slipper and a boot have been opposite pieces of footwear, functionally speaking. Slippers are soft, easy to pull on and made for padding around inside. Boots are stiff, require onerous lacing and are made to provide traction on rugged terrain.

This ReEmber Camp Slip On, by California-based footwear brand Teva, takes the best of both. It’s soft and features a quilted upper for warmth, a grippy rubber outsole for traction, a cushioned footbed, a collapsible heel if you just want to jam them on, and a single strap if you need a little more fit.

Though designed with campers in mind, it will also appeal to those who live in suburban or rural areas. There are plenty of times when you need to step outside for just a moment, like retrieving a package at the end of an icy driveway, or traveling a gravel path to the garden, where these would be just the ticket.

They run $80 and come in whole-number sizes only. Both men’s and women’s versions are available.

Who First Invented the Ball Pit? Two Young Ikea Designers, in 1970

In 1968, Charlotte Rude and Hjördis Olsson-Une were two young graduates of Sweden’s Konstfack University, where they had studied art and design. The two moved to Älmhult, Sweden, where a glassworks was located; having caught the material exploration bug at design school, the two wanted to experiment with glass.

The pair had very little money and shared an apartment. To furnish it, they bought inexpensive leftover particle board from a nearby construction site, and built pieces they designed themselves.

Älmhult was also where Ikea had opened their first store, back in 1958, and was where their headquarters were based. Some of Rude and Olsson-Une’s neighbors worked for Ikea, and when they saw the designers’ self-created furniture, encouraged them to try to sell the designs to Ikea. The neighbors introduced them to Ikea manager Gillis Lundgren.

Lundgren didn’t buy their designs. Instead he offered them full-time jobs. The duo accepted, and soon began designing furniture.

In 1970s, the Ikea store in Stockholm suffered a fire and needed to be rebuilt. The brass decided they may as well add a large play area for children. The task of designing the play area fell to Rude and Olsson-Une, who were then Ikea’s youngest designers. The two designed a sort of indoor playground filled with pillows, ropes and platforms.

But “the biggest star of the play area,” according to Ikea, “was the ball pit.”

The idea came when Charlotte and Hjördis were opening boxes containing a new type of protective packing material. It consisted of small plastic balls, and reminded Charlotte of the then wildly popular bean bags that kids would sit and lie down in.

They imagined how one could jump and swim around in a sea of balls if it was deep and wide enough. However, these balls were too small. Children might put them in their mouths and choke. At the time, plastic was growing fast as a material, and the young designers soon found lighter and bigger multicoloured balls to use.

A huge wooden box – deep enough to jump into – was built with particleboard and filled with thousands of balls. When the play area opened in 1971, the ball pit became a huge hit. Kids loved it, and families were soon rushing to IKEA to let their children try out the new invention. Later in the 1970s, ball pits of all sorts started popping up in everything from amusement parks to fast-food restaurants, but the ball pit in the Stockholm IKEA store in 1971 was likely the first one in the world.

Rude and Olsson-Une didn’t stay at Ikea for long; after just five years, in 1973, they moved to Copenhagen to pursue graduate studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. They took on freelance design work–and apparently faded into obscurity. I can find no record of their work after their time at Ikea.

Composed of intersecting gable and mono-pitched volumes, the form echoes the quiet vernacular of Newfoundland’s built tradition while articulating a modern silhouette. Textural contrast defines the exterior. Vertical, dark-grey cladding is juxtaposed with crisp, horizontal white wood siding to sculpt a nuanced interplay of light and shadow. Strategic window placement frames extended views of the harbor, drawing the sea into daily life, while sheltered courtyard spaces mediate between interior comfort and coastal exposure.
