This Brazilian Invention Straightens Scrap Rebar for Reuse

We now use more concrete than ever in our built environment, and that concrete is held together with rebar. When structures outlive their usefulness and are demolished, the rebar can be extracted and recycled. However, the recovered rebar needs to first be cleaned of contaminants, either through grinding or the use of chemical solvents. Only then can it be melted down in a furnace.

All of those steps take a lot of energy and resources. It would be better if the rebar could simply be reused in a new construction project, rather than melted down, but recovered rebar is often mangled into unwieldy shapes.

Brazilian company JP Botelho Machines is here to fix that problem. They develop machinery to make spent construction materials usable again, and their flagship product is this Rebar Recycler:

“We’ve created an alternative to using [virgin] metal, offering a new opportunity to achieve virtually the same results, but at a lower cost. Rebar recycled by our machine can be used to manufacture water tank towers, equipment towers, trusses, railings, columns, poles, and more.”

At present, the company only distributes within Brazil.

Their machine reminds me of another southern hemisphere invention: This Australian fence post straightener.

Executive creative director and partner Vincent Lammers explains how they’re using AI, and how he feels about it.

Broadly speaking, are you excited for how AI will change the design industry, or nervous?

That’s a layered question, so I’ll give a layered answer.

First, I think we’re piling way too much on those two letters. The hype is distorting how the industry thinks about and implements it. We need more nuance in this conversation.

AI is an incredible innovation. It opens up opportunities across so many parts of our industry, and in specific applications, it’s wildly impressive. Automating repetitive tasks, collecting and framing data in meaningful ways, those are exciting because they create more space for humans to make meaningful contributions.

There’s also potential in how the technology shows up as a product in itself. We’ve been involved in visualising different versions of AI Assistants, giving them character, form, and presence. That sparks fascinating conversations about what people connect with, how they interact, and what makes them disengage.

Where I do get nervous is around the process. There’s this narrative of, “Now you can do this at the push of a button.” And yes, technically you can. But it won’t look or move as thoughtfully or purposefully.

Focusing only on the output of generative AI is misleading. I tell clients all the time – we could give you 100 designs in a day. We have some of the best artists in the world. But that doesn’t solve your problem.

Our process is built to take complex business and communication challenges and break them down into manageable pieces. We inform ourselves, challenge both ourselves and the client, and ask the right questions to ensure every element is purposeful.

That approach creates trust, builds solid foundations, and allows us to prototype and pressure test along the way. It’s what helps the final work stand the test of culture, quality, and time. Just as importantly, it creates buy-in across every layer of a brand’s organisation. Without that, even the best creative won’t stick.

Because let’s be honest, if someone generates something quickly, puts it into the world, and it fails, who takes the blame?

They used all the test data to write the prompt, so it can’t be the human…right? That’s why I’m wary of this technology as a shortcut.

Shortcuts usually mean cutting out something vital from the process. If you’re aware of that and willing to accept the risk, fine. But don’t pretend it’s the same thing.

So yes, I’m excited about the potential. But I’m equally concerned about the shortcuts people think it will give them.

Do you have an agreed policy around AI as a business? If so, how did you create it?

We do and it’s constantly evolving and changing. Early on, we brought in legal counsel to make sure we had our ducks in a row and were informed from a business and compliance standpoint. In many ways, that was the easy part.

The trickier and ongoing work is the policy around how we use AI and what we do with it. That part is a constant work in progress, shaped by our collective knowledge, experience, and clarity of purpose.

We’ve set up global groups across the company who meet regularly to discuss AI.

Right now, we’re in a stage of exploration, inspiration, and implementation all at once. Our approach is driven by our people and informed at every level, from labelling AI-generated art during the process to making sure tools are accessible to our teams, all while maintaining a high level of security and rigour around their use.

And we’re clear with clients about how we use these tools. Some brands are excited to embrace them, while others prefer to stay away. Our policy is flexible enough to align with both.

When did you realise AI was going to have an impact on design?

It happened very quickly. When the Midjourney Experiments channel became one of the most active on our Slack within just a few weeks, I personally knew something was shifting.

We immediately created space for conversations with our staff, listening not only to their concerns but also to their excitement. We assigned people at different levels to stay informed and share knowledge.

As a company, we’ve always been deeply connected to new tools and innovations, so it came very naturally to us as a company. But we also recognised right away that this wasn’t just another plug-in or software update, it was something bigger.

Another moment that stood out was the ability to train models or Loras on our own work. Suddenly, we could generate variations within the same visual language. That really struck a chord in terms of how this technology could help us continue to create and design in new ways.

Have you undergone any AI training, either as a studio or individuals?

We have a natural culture of training and development at Buck. We’ve always made space for artists and staff to share new ways of working, whether it’s a process, a workflow, or a specific technique or tool used on a project.

From how we used Rive on the Notion Assistant project to an artist experimenting with different animation styles from a simple line test, these spaces quickly turned into hubs for trying out new tools, including AI.

It’s been incredibly powerful to watch our most craft-focused, traditional artists and art directors dive into these tools and share what they’re learning. They’ve shown how to experiment while keeping control and ownership of the work and that peer-to-peer exchange has had a huge impact.

One of my favourite examples of this is our TGI Friday’s education series, a crowd-sourced initiative started by our artists to share and showcase new AI workflows. It’s become a space where teams come together, swap ideas, and stay inspired as the tools keep evolving.

We think of this as a “middle-out” culture. It doesn’t just come from leadership at the top or from the newest talent coming in. It happens across every layer of the company.

How do you use AI in the studio’s creative process?

We very much believe Humans, with a capital H, should stay in the driver’s seat. Clients want and need to collaborate with people they can build trust with. That relationship can’t be automated.

That said, there are many strategic and tactical areas where we see opportunities, and where we’re already implementing new tools. From analysing audience data and research, to unpacking briefs, to prototyping and exploration. We use it during our ideation or exploration phases, quickly testing or prototyping visual ideas.

Never as a final output though – it always starts and ends with human input.

These tools have also been empowering our 3D teams by speeding up repetitive or monotonous tasks, freeing our artists to focus on the things humans do best – creativity, storytelling, and craft.

We’ve also noticed that generative tools produce better results when they’re grounded in human input, design sketches, animated line tests, things with intent baked in. But also in versioning and delivering at large scales.

We build a lot of brand design systems, and those can become ingredients for further tools. Increasingly, clients handle asset creation themselves with their internal teams. We provide the building blocks – frameworks, assets, templates. That’s something you could easily train a system on.

Instead of just a Brand Design System, you start to imagine a Brand Design Brain.

Do you think clients care if/how you use AI in your work?

Some do, some don’t. What matters is the question behind the question – why do they care?

Sometimes it’s because they want to move faster or to get to ideation and iteration quickly. Others are looking to innovate or pioneer new processes. And yes, some assume that it will make things cheaper or easier.

What matters to us is using the tools for the right reasons. Our job is to make sure the work stays successful, meaningful, and impactful, with or without AI.

Do you use AI for any non-creative aspects of running your business?

Absolutely. I think there’s a lot of tunnel vision on the generative type tools, when in fact some of the biggest opportunities are operational like finance and IT.

We’ve been building assistants in areas like talent resourcing, feeding in years of data on what kinds of projects our people have thrived on, so we can place them on the right work.

We’ve built assistants that analyse client briefs, drawing from two decades of briefs to flag similar past projects or uncover opportunities we might otherwise miss.

We’re also experimenting with Culture Assistants that track what’s happening on specific platforms, surfacing trends or cultural conversations that could be relevant for our clients. And Audience Assistants that model specific target groups, allowing us to test prototypes or creative ideas and see what resonates.

The potential here is huge. Again, these tools don’t drive our work or make decisions for us, but they give us better intelligence and keep us more informed. And that, in turn, makes us better partners to our clients.

Beyond the best known tools, what is one AI tool that you would recommend to other design studios?

We’ve always taken a fairly software-agnostic approach as a studio, meaning we don’t put all our chips on a single tool or platform. So rather than pointing to one “silver bullet,” I’d recommend approaching with curiosity and experimentation.

At this stage, the most valuable thing is simply getting your feet wet. Try different platforms, see what’s possible, and explore how they might fit into your creative process in playful, low-barrier ways.

Tools like Krea, for example, make it easy to test a variety of models for image generation, editing, or even video. They’re great for sparking ideas and opening up new directions.

Once you’re ready to move from playful exploration into production, we’ve found ComfyUI to be a powerful base tool. It lets you integrate multiple models, work with more control, and build structured workflows that can deliver production-quality results.

So my recommendation is less about a single product and more about mindset – experiment broadly, stay curious, and use these tools as a sandbox.

Then, when you’re ready, take that curiosity into more advanced frameworks like ComfyUI. That’s often where you discover the workflows and creative solutions you wouldn’t have found by locking into one tool too early.

Reconstructing Value turns banknotes into benches

If you’ve ever dreamed about sitting on a fortune, literally, you’ll get a chance to do so at London Design Festival with the Bank of England Museum’s newest pop‑up, “Reconstructing Value”. A collaboration between designer Saskia Boersma, the Surface Matter collective and the material studio Plasticiet transforms £2.5 million worth of withdrawn British banknotes into a series of sculptural benches that echo the pound sign (£) while questioning what we consider valuable .

The process begins with the systematic removal of old notes from circulation. Once shredded, the paper fibers are reconstituted using a proprietary plasticiser that binds the material without compromising its texture. The resulting sheets retain the iconic hues and subtle security patterns of the original currency, allowing the benches to retain a recognisable, yet abstract, financial language. Surface Matter then curates complementary surface palettes like roman mosaic tiles, Portland stone and patinated brass, mirroring the historic interiors of the Bank while reinforcing the dialogue between past and present .

Designer Names: Saskia Boersma, Surface Matter, Plasticiet

Saskia Boersma’s design language, known for its playful reinterpretations of everyday objects, frames the benches as both functional furniture and public art. Each piece is cast into a curved form that, when viewed from above, outlines the £ symbol, turning the act of sitting into a visual reminder of monetary flow. The benches occupy the museum’s historic Stock Room, a space once reserved for vaults and ledgers, thereby redefining the room’s purpose from storage to social interaction.

Beyond aesthetics, the project tackles the environmental impact of paper waste. By diverting millions of pounds of banknote paper from landfill, the installation demonstrates a circular economy model where discarded money gains a second life as design material. Plasticiet’s plasticiser, a low‑impact polymer, ensures durability while maintaining a tactile softness that encourages lingering. The initiative aligns with the London Design Festival’s broader emphasis on sustainable innovation, positioning the Bank of England Museum as a laboratory for post‑waste design solutions.

Visitors experience the benches as part of a larger narrative that includes lunchtime talks and curated material displays. Surface Matter’s series of recycled surface palettes runs alongside the furniture, offering designers and the public a tangible library of sustainable textures inspired by the bank’s historic colour schemes. These talks explore how value can be re‑imagined through material choice, encouraging participants to consider how everyday objects might be repurposed in their own practice.

In a city where historic institutions often cling to tradition, this project demonstrates how heritage can be a springboard for forward‑thinking design. By converting decommissioned currency into public seating, Boersma, Surface Matter and Plasticiet not only give discarded paper a new purpose but also provoke a broader conversation about the economics of sustainability. The benches stand as a reminder that value is not fixed. It can be shredded, reshaped, and re‑valued through creative intervention.

Located in Morocco’s capital, Rabat, the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium is a 68,700-seat venue by Populous in association with Oualalou + Choi that was delivered in just 24 months and combines a parametric LED facade with a fan-centric bowl.

 

The stadium’s shimmering, golden facade is inspired by Rabat’s iconic palm-lined boulevards and Morocco’s artisanal heritage. Composed of 19,200 aluminum triangles, each uniquely sized, and wrapped in 70 km of LED strips, the shell transforms at sunset into a glowing spectacle. Its placement along the city’s eucalyptus-lined green belt symbolically connects the stadium to Rabat’s urban and natural landscape.

The global architecture and design team at Populous, in collaboration with Oualalou + Choi, have crafted the bowl of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium to maximize crowd engagement. The dual-tiered south ‘Kop’ stand, with a cantilevered upper tier hovering eight meters above the lower, accommodates 23,000 fans in one of the continent’s largest continuous supporter sections. This arrangement turns crowd energy into a palpable sonic wall, linking fans directly to the pitch. The West and East Stands bring together hospitality and elite seating with skyboxes that form a U-shaped ring around the field.

 

Populous’ design strategy was highly collaborative, leveraging teams across multiple offices to deliver detailed design documentation compatible with local construction processes led by Société Générale des Travaux du Maroc. This integration enabled the rapid 24-month design-and-build timeline — a feat rarely achieved for a stadium of this scale.

 

With its parametric facade, acoustically tuned bowl, and public connectivity, the stadium is designed to meet FIFA specifications and is ready to host matches up to the semi-finals of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium will also accommodate the opening, semi-finals, and final of AFCON 2025. Beyond football, it serves as a civic space, with the forecourt being connected to a new railway station and urban infrastructure, embedding the stadium into Rabat’s wider urban fabric and encouraging public transport access.

CZECH DESIGN WEEK 2025 RETURNED FOR ITS 12TH EDITION

 

From September 11-14, 2025, Prague has once again transformed into a vibrant, city-wide gallery, celebrating the 12th edition of Czech Design Week. By situating the works of the newest generation of designers and artists within the capital’s most iconic cultural landmarks, the event created a unique dialogue between past and present. The festival’s core message — that contemporary design thrives on collaboration between tradition and technology — was further underscored by the involvement of its general partner, Xiaomi. Their engagement challenges the notion that tradition and innovation are mutually exclusive.

HISTORIC VENUES AS A CANVAS FOR CONTEMPORARY CREATIVITY

 

The festival’s main stage was the functionalist Mánes Gallery, a 1930s architectural gem that hosts around a hundred exhibitors. This historic space becomes a canvas for a broad survey of contemporary design, from glass and porcelain to fashion and technology. It’s here that emerging talents from Czech and Slovak academies were displayed alongside established studios and global brands like Italian lighting pioneer Artemide and technology leaders Xiaomi and SONY. 

 

Just a short walk away, the baroque Clam-Gallas Palace offered a more intimate and experimental experience. As the home of the third edition of the New Generation exhibition, the palace hosted nearly thirty artists who deliberately blur the lines between design and fine art. Curated by Anna Pulkertová and Lukáš Pipek, the show featured prominent figures like photographer Marie Tomanová, painter Matyáš Maláč, and sculptor Magdalena Roztočilová. The palace also hosted solo exhibitions by young artists who embody this unique hybrid practice, including Pavlína Šváchová, František Jungvirt, and Jiří Bartoš, proving that Prague’s historic heart is a fertile ground for artistic exploration.

CZECH DESIGN AWARD 2025 FOCUSES ON TRADITION

 

The festival culminated with the Czech Design Award: Ploom Edition, which focuses on the theme of Tradition. The four winning projects demonstrate how Czech and Slovak designers are reinterpreting cultural and craft heritage to address urgent social and lifestyle questions. The winners include Adam Veselý’s knitted helmet for cochlear implant users, Adéla Lakomá’s engraved glass inspired by folk lace, Dveperly’s porcelain boxes that revisit the archetype of the soup tureen, and Studio Licht’s modular furniture reviving the forgotten tradition of home bars. The festival demonstrated to an international audience why Czech design, rooted in craft, rich in experimentation, and open to dialogue, deserves attention far beyond its borders.

Love Hultén’s produces a custom and guitar-like synth instrument with ferrofluid that dances whenever a sound plays. A seeming reimagination of the Y17 sound machine, the device is a commission by a client that now forms part of his growing sonic projects. The synth instrument runs on batteries, and it houses a modified Arturia Microfreak synth along with a ferrofluid visualizer. There are also built-in speakers, so users can already hear the sounds as soon as they play the device.

 

The hand-built sound machine has a boxy body, with the upper left part’s corner being cut off for the speakers. There are two arms: one for the sound buttons and the other to tweak the reverb. A set of switches and dials are arranged on the body, with the mounted switches and rotary knobs sitting next to the encased ferrofluid. There’s also a shoulder strap for the user, so they can carry it with them anywhere and while they play.

Love Hultén’s synth instrument doesn’t have strings or keys, but knobs and controls. Upon a closer look, there are straight lines mapped around the body, leading to the function of the controls, such as the select button, type of sounds, and even the customizing of the movement of the ferrofluid. On the top face of the device there are twelve rotary knobs. They connect to the microcontroller, and turning the knobs changes settings for pitch, filter, volume, or modulation. Below the knobs is a row of toggle switches, and these switches change modes or link circuits.

 

One black joystick in the center allows the player to bend notes or control other parameters. On the right side, one of the long arms, a steel rod with rings, acts as a pitch or effect handle. Moving this rod changes a signal value read by a sensor. The top of the instrument has an arm with two rows of small buttons, which trigger sounds in sequence. The sensors are placed in a straight line so the player can touch or block each one to start or stop notes. So far, the synth instrument is a commissioned project by Love Hultén for a client of his.

V Taller completes regenerative tower in the jungles of Tulum

 

At the fringe of Tulum’s rapidly evolving landscape, V Taller architecture firm redefines what a tourism development can be with Babel, an establishment shaped by the jungle, mythology, and climate resilience. Commissioned by a client with a clear vision of referencing the biblical Tower of Babel and classical arches, the project departs from superficial symbolism to offer a deeper, site-sensitive response. The result is a vertically composed complex of 59 units organized around an elliptical courtyard, where architecture and nature coalesce to form a living system that is both contemplative and adaptable to future climatic and economic shifts.

 

Internally, the design maintains a sense of calm through natural materials, tropical wood carpentry, clay vessels, and white linen textiles, reinforcing the artisanal and contextual sensitivity of the project.

Babel draws from the hammam typology

 

Upon encountering a site already scarred by human intervention amidst an otherwise untouched jungle, Mexico City-based V Taller rethinks the role of built form. The studio opts for vertical circulation cores to minimize land use and regenerate native vegetation, supporting environmental restoration and commercial viability, and offering a hybrid hospitality-residential program that flexibly accommodates various types of stay, rhythms of life, and occupancy cycles.

 

At the center of the scheme stands the tower, set precisely at the geometric centroid of the eye-shaped plan. The cylindrical structure draws from the typology of the hammam, using filtered natural light and material tactility to create an atmosphere of introspection. Its design culminates in a triangular stargazing aperture, a symbolic gesture linking the earthbound structure to the cosmos.

light tunnels, thermal pools, and layered vegetation

 

Light, shadow, and tactility guide the user’s experience throughout the complex. Stairwells act as light tunnels; arched thresholds frame shifts in scale and perception; and layered tropical vegetation choreographs transitions between public and private spaces. A circular pool at the tower’s base mirrors the form of the central void and supports passive cooling, while vaulted ceilings, cross-ventilation, and bioclimatic strategies enhance thermal performance without reliance on rooftop mechanical systems.
