CAMPUS designs CHIMI’s new Stockholm flagship

 

CAMPUS completes CHIMI’s new Stockholm flagship eyewear store with an approach grounded in reduction, clarity, and sustainable practice. The design process began by removing accumulated additions to uncover the site’s original architecture, allowing the new interventions to emerge through precision and restraint. The architects treat the act of reduction as a design tool rather than an aesthetic gesture. By peeling away non-essential layers, they reveal the inherent character of the space, balancing material honesty with environmental responsibility. Subsequent additions are deliberate and minimal, each serving to enhance circulation, function, and brand identity. A central parabolic counter defines the spatial organization, while a preserved staircase, refined with burgundy stucco side walls, acts as both structural and visual anchor. Together, these elements illustrate the project’s guiding principle: to achieve expression through measured subtraction rather than addition.

CAMPUS utilizes subtraction as a design principle

 

The parabolic curve, first introduced in CHIMI’s New York flagship, reappears here as a key spatial motif. In Stockholm, this geometry is developed through the sweeping central counter, which unifies display and customer interaction within a single form. The staircase, with its warm, mineral finish, complements this curve to create a visual dialogue between the existing and the new. Lighting plays an equally structural role in the design. A four-meter-wide circular luminaire and five-meter ribbon-like ceiling lights define the ceiling plane, offering both illumination and acoustic softness. Their presence forms a counterpoint to the tactile, mineral palette below, reinforcing the spatial hierarchy without dominating it.

 

The CHIMI Stockholm flagship demonstrates how a process of careful subtraction and targeted refinement can produce a space of clarity and coherence. Through this balance of material reduction and formal precision, CAMPUS architectural studio redefines retail architecture as an exercise in restraint and environmental consideration.

Oslotre builds Six-Story Timber Office Building in Kristiansand

 

Lumber 4 by Oslotre studio is a commercial and office building in Kristiansand, Norway, spanning six floors. A recessed ground floor constitutes the commercial level, with the five floors above dedicated to office spaces. The structure is composed of a mass timber construction with columns and beams made of glued laminated timber. The floors are constructed using a composite structure of CLT and concrete, creating a slim and efficient floor system that spans long distances while also addressing fire and acoustic requirements. Diagonals on the ground floor facilitate better vehicular access around the building. The existing communication core from adjacent building phases contributes to lateral stability and access to the office floors. Between the third and fourth floors, an atrium with an internal staircase made of masstimber has been introduced. Wood elements are prominently displayed in the interior, providing warmth in winter and cooling in summer.

Green Curved Pine Facade Defines Lumber 4 Office Building

 

The facade is composed of prefabricated curved wooden elements in pine, treated with green paint. The eaves above the curved elements are straight, creating a curved shadow on the panel. Over time, the paint under the shadow will weather, leading to a changing facade with lighter and darker curved sections. For the insulation, Oslotre’s design team uses wood fiber throughout. The cladding consists of fire-treated pine. All load-bearing structures are exposed, and exterior walls are clad with white-pigmented spruce panels. Wood wool acoustic panels are used in concealed service areas and meeting rooms. Visible conduits are painted in a light beige color. The large floor-to-ceiling windows open up to the view and provide ample natural light. The construction of the building was completed in record time, with detailed planning and construction taking only 12 months. Lumber 4 demonstrates that it’s possible to construct competitive timber buildings when compared to the same technical standard concrete and steel structures. The building was 90% leased upon completion. Oslotre served as the architect, interior architect, and timber structural engineer for the project.

daniel arsham sculpts his first hublot wristwatch to capture movement of rippling waters

hublot’s MP-17 Meca-10 Arsham Splash Titanium Sapphire

 

The MP-17 Meca-10 Arsham Splash Titanium Sapphire marks the first wristwatch collaboration between Hublot and artist Daniel Arsham. Limited to 99 pieces, the 42 mm watch continues the designer’s dialogue between art and mechanics that began with last year’s MP-16 Arsham Droplet. Where that design reimagined a pocket watch as a sculptural object, the MP-17 translates similar ideas into a wearable form that captures the movement and clarity of water.

 

Housed in a titanium case framed by a sapphire crystal bezel, the MP-17 embodies both precision and flow. The timepiece’s defining feature is a splash-shaped dial aperture — an irregular, organic opening that reveals the intricate architecture of Hublot’s Meca-10 manual-wind movement beneath. Through this aperture, the eye follows the rhythm of gears and bridges as they turn, framed by Arsham’s signature shade of green.

Hublot’s use of sapphire crystal gives the Daniel Arsham-designed MP-17 a sense of openness uncommon in mechanical watchmaking. Light passes through the case, illuminating the skeletonized movement, while the smooth titanium lugs and exposed H-screws emphasize its engineered clarity. The transparency of the watch feels architectural, as if the case were a pavilion designed to expose its inner framework rather than conceal it.

 

The artist’s concept of ‘collapsed time’ finds expression here through material and structure. ‘My work is about collapsing time,he explains.You’re not quite sure if it’s an object from the past or the future.’ The MP-17 embodies that tension, as it is designed to feel at once futuristic and archaeological. Arsham hopes that the timepiece might seem to be discovered or designed centuries apart.

The rubber strap and H-shaped titanium clasp ground the piece in familiar Hublot design language, lending continuity between the brand’s mechanical heritage and Arsham’s sculptural sensibility.

 

The dial’s asymmetry is defined by the splash motif, which draws the wearer’s attention inward. It becomes a small study in spatial proportion, like an architectural cutout that mediates between inside and outside. The polished titanium surfaces contrast with the matte textures of the movement in a deliberate play of reflection and depth.

 

Priced at $69,000 USD and available in a numbered series of 99, the watch is offered exclusively through Hublot boutiques and select retailers.

Atelier Guo’s Moon Pavilion rises over the waters of Huizhou

 

Atelier Guo transforms an abandoned greenhouse in Huizhou, China, into the Moon Pavilion, a compact, two-story structure. Conceived in collaboration with artists Meilin Gao and Gang Xu, the project draws from an ancient Chinese verse describing a poet, smiling and intoxicated among flowers, and translates this literary image into spatial experience. 

 

The lunar element is central to the concept and the physical composition of the pavilion. On one facade, a rotatable art installation evokes the moon as a reflective, shifting presence, an artificial counterpart to its celestial original. Seen from a distance, both moons shimmer over the pond encircling the structure. As visitors walk along the water’s edge, the pavilion’s curved silhouette itself recalls the slow ascent of the moon over the horizon.

Material Reuse in the Greenhouse Redesign

 

The design began with Shanghai-based Atelier Guo’s decision to reinterpret the existing greenhouse. Its lightweight pin-jointed frame, made from agricultural construction materials, informed the proportions and tectonics of the structure. While the original was dismantled, its language of temporary assembly with flat roof layers, arched middle span, and translucent polycarbonate cladding is reimagined as a more permanent yet equally permeable structure.

 

Artist Gang Xu’s collaboration extends the logic of reuse by employing steel members from the old greenhouse that are refashioned into stool legs, while the seat surfaces are made from compressed waste materials. Carbon-curing boards are used for the upper floor, reflecting an ongoing interest in sustainability and material afterlife.

 

The second-floor concrete slab serves as a raised terrain, an idea borrowed from the seasonal practice of lifting boats during the dry season. Supported by a dense, irregular array of steel columns that conceal mechanical systems, the geometry of the slab recalls the hull of a vessel. Above, the roof truss rises higher than the original greenhouse, enhancing lateral stability while amplifying the impression of a boat poised to drift.

Continuity unfolds through vegetation and light in china

 

Though the physical structure of the greenhouse was not retained, its spirit of cultivation remains. Atelier Guo extends this continuity through a planted gradient that dissolves the architectural perimeter, composed of shade-tolerant species that occupy the space beneath the slab, while native vegetation spreads beyond.

 

From afar, the dark polycarbonate cladding of the Moon Pavilion gives it the appearance of a pair of sunglasses, a choice that references the agricultural context and amplifies the moon installation’s luminosity by contrast. The tinted skin reveals the steel hierarchy of the structure beneath. Working with sustainability consultants from Atelier Li Yin, the team integrates passive ventilation, shading, and mechanical misting systems to maintain comfort through airflow.

Adam Rix is head of NOT Wieden+Kennedy, the design studio spun out of the famous ad agency. It works with clients like Upwork, Dark Arts Coffee and the Eurovision Song Contest.

What would your monograph be called?

WIP. I wouldn’t be able to commit to a title, because I’d change my mind six months, or maybe even six minutes after it went to print. Because whilst I have strong points of view, they’re all pretty loosely held.

When I first came across the old adage, “the only constant is change,” it really stuck with me. It’s true of our industry, our culture, technology – and to be honest, most of my workdays.

So if we’re not constantly evolving the way we think, work, and see the world, I think we’re kind of screwed. But I actually think that’s a really positive, exciting thing. I never want to feel like I’ve figured it all out and I always believe my best work is still ahead of me.

I’m constantly evaluating our processes, replaying things I could have done better – and often, there’s plenty – learning from others, challenging my own thinking, blaming myself first when things go wrong. I get bored when I feel too comfortable – and I’m always ready to have my opinion changed.

Because if I ever get to the point where I think I know it all, that I’m no longer a work in progress – it’s not just me that will be screwed, the work will be too.

Or, in the charismatic words of Dan Wieden, “When you don’t know, you try desperately to find out. But the minute you think you know, the minute you go – oh, yeah, we’ve been here before, no sense reinventing the wheel – you stop learning, stop questioning, and start believing in your own wisdom, you’re dead. You’re not stupid anymore, you are fucking dead.”

What recent design work made you a bit jealous?

Turns out it’s not recent, it’s from 2022 – and it’s the livery for the German airline Condor.

It’s pretty unusual, as people in the industry, that any of us get to experience work for the first time outside of a bento box. But last year I landed at Frankfurt airport, looked out of my window and saw five planes all wrapped in different brightly coloured stripes – and it instantly just made me smile.

I’m a big believer in the power of design to go beyond ideas and aesthetics and make people feel something – and this did just that.

I love that the client must have believed in the idea so much to invest in full plane wraps in a multitude of colours, so hats off to both Remo Masala of Vision Alphabet in Berlin, and Condor.

Ironically I can only find it on one design website, but I’ve found lots of coverage in mainstream media and plenty of chatter on social and Reddit threads of people going out of their way to share their love for it – the best measure of success in my eyes.

What’s an unusual place you get inspiration from?

This might not be unusual for everyone, but it is for me. I used to find inspiration by doing, but as life has got busier over time, I find I now need to make time and space for my mind to be able to wander a little – but never sitting around with a notepad, and never ever endlessly scrolling online.

I feel like my strongest, clearest thoughts come to me when I’m walking up a hill, going for a run, or checking out an exhibition. I need to create that time and space and then trick my brain into thinking I’m not thinking. Complicated, aren’t we?

Name something that is brilliantly designed, but overlooked.

The banana‑peel wet floor sign. On a good day it delivers a moment of joyful silliness as you remain upright walking past. On a more spillage-y day it’s the moment that saves your back, and your dignity. And studies show – that’s how into this I am – that it commands 22 times more attention than traditional slippery floor signs.

What object in your studio best sums up your taste?

Technically it belongs to my kids, but our Kit-Cat Clock – Earl Arnault’s 1932 tail-wagging, eye-swivelling answer to lifting peoples’ spirits during the Great Depression. More proof that great design can be joyful, weird, and a little bit stupid.

Leadership

1. What feedback felt brutal at the time, but turned out to be useful?

“Other people feel your emotions.” Which is great when it’s the good, positive, excited kind. But when it’s stress, panic or negativity – the people around you start to feel that too – and that’s not so great.

The feedback I got was more around the latter. It sounds stupidly obvious when it’s said out loud, but it’s not something you tend to think about earlier in your career when you’re focussed on the work, taking on more responsibility and feeling the pressure of looming deadlines.

Our job isn’t just to create great work ourselves – it’s about creating the right environment for others to do their best work too.

What’s an underappreciated skill that design leaders need?

Invisibility. But balanced with availability. Hire good people, then get out of the way.

I believe people do their best work when given autonomy, ownership and responsibility. I don’t think “leaders” should feel the need to have their finger prints all over the work, or that they need to be the loudest voice in the room.

But they do need to be available to guide, support, and soak up the pressure when things go wrong. And if things are going brilliantly – just leave everyone to it.

What keeps you up at night?

Scroll up to the very first question. That, and too much coffee.

What trait is non-negotiable in new hires?

Paul Arden said, “No talented wankers.” Netflix’s culture document puts it a little more gently – “Brilliant jerks. Some companies tolerate them. For us, the cost to teamwork is too high.”

Whichever you prefer, both reflect my view that talent alone is not enough, and that ego is an absolute no-go.

Complete this sentence, “I wish more clients…”

This might sound a bit kiss-ass, but I’m really not into the client-bashing narrative. Like all of us, I wish every client bought the most creative idea on the table – but if they don’t, then more often than not, I think it’s on us to do better.

To put ourselves in their shoes, to understand what’s keeping them up at night, and to make the wildest, most unexpected idea feel like the most logical thing in the world. To help them see that buying that work isn’t the risk – not buying it is.

Industrial Design Student Work: An Elegant Space Heater Concept

This re-thinking of central heating systems is by Moritz Walter, done while pursuing his Master of Industrial Design degree at the Weissensee Kunsthochschule Berlin. Rather than relying on central boilers and radiators, Moritz took a cue from space heaters—minus the metal fins. Instead, Walter did testing with electrically-heated fabric, then experimented with a variety of elegant forms to support the fabric.

HOTSPOT – DECENTRAL HEATING

How do we want to heat in the future? We will have to switch to sustainable and renewable energy sources, as fossil fuels do not offer a long-term perspective. Furthermore, conventional heating systems with complex infrastructure only insufficiently meet individual heating needs. The project HOTSPOT explores the possibilities of decentralized, electricity-based heating.

By creating small heat zones in the room, heating is both more comfortable and efficient. I developed a product-family with two objects: a heat panel for large-area radiant heating as well as mobile, modular heat-storage units for near-body heat transfer. The objects are capable of responding flexibly to individual heating needs and they fit seamlessly into residential environments.

Walter, now a dual-degree industrial designer, won a 2025 Rising Talents Award for the project.

A Novel Membrane Enables This Greenhouse-like Temporary Library, by DS+R Architects

This La Libreria project, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro Architects, is based on a concept by Diane von Furstenberg and is currently being showcased at the Venice Architecture Biennale. The project’s execution relied on a special textile membrane called STFE developed by the Serge Ferrari Group, a French materials manufacturer. (STFE is made of polyarylate, a type of durable polyester with good optical clarity and UV resistance.)

La Libreria is a creation by the American firm DS+R Architects, aiming to promote reading and access to knowledge. Its lightweight and mobile design allows the library to be moved and brought directly to its audiences. It draws inspiration from tensile lightweight architecture, and in particular from the experimental work of French engineer Robert Le Ricolais in the mid-20th century, who explored the concept of “tensegrity.”

“We considered several ideas around nomadic, tent-like structures,” says DS+R Architects’ Matt Ostrow. The main challenges were: it had to be quick to assemble and dismantle, potentially reusable, and respect a tight budget. The site itself also posed difficulties for transporting and assembling materials. We wanted people to feel like they were in a garden—even inside. The transparency allows natural light in, which is important since the structure is primarily used during the day. It also connects people to the surrounding environment. But we needed more than just transparency: we also needed shading, durability, and security. Additionally, we had to adapt to the site’s linear constraints, which influenced the overall design.”

“We naturally began exploring the use of a transparent material for the outer shell. As we were working with a spindle-like system—a 24-meter cable-reinforced steel structure—we knew that deflection would occur and heavy materials would compromise stability. To preserve the span and overall lightness, we turned to a textile membrane. We explored several materials, but many lacked the necessary stiffness or didn’t offer adequate security. We needed something more robust to protect the books and furnishings inside. Ultimately, STFE emerged as the solution, offering greater natural light and improved interior visibility.”

“This project is an experiment. It embodies themes we’ve explored in past proposals: creating social spaces centered around books and learning—not digital media. It’s like an outreach library concept—something that could pop up in a park or public space rather than a central, permanent building. For the Biennale, we also wanted to experiment with structure. The lightweight, cable-stayed system allowed us to enclose a significant area without heavy components. And of course, the Biennale encourages experimentation—so the use of advanced materials and a design intended for multiple future lives was a natural fit.”

Says the manufacturer: “STFE is extremely lightweight—ten times lighter than glass—and reinforced with polyarylate fiber, providing high structural strength. This composite material can span wide distances without the need for extensive secondary support structures. Its transparency, strength, and flexibility make it ideal for maintaining tension while allowing for great freedom in the final shape. These characteristics make it an optimal solution for meeting the technical demands of advanced architectural applications.”

The material looks ideal for greenhouse construction, but I suspect its cost is more in line with high-end architecture projects.
