Disney’s Spooky Chair Removes Comfort From Halloween Viewing

When Disney says they want you on the edge of your seat, they’re not speaking metaphorically anymore. The streaming giant unveiled “EDGEOFYØR Seat,” a handcrafted wooden chair built to keep viewers literally on the edge of their seats while watching Huluween programming. And yes, they actually carved away most of the chair to make this happen.

Let’s be honest, most of us watch horror movies curled up under blankets with all the lights on, occasionally peeking through our fingers at the scary parts. But the chair was developed by Austin-based creative agency CALLEN with San Francisco furniture maker Fyrn, two companies that apparently don’t believe in cozy viewing experiences. The EDGEOFYØR Seat is a tongue-in-cheek twist on Fyrn’s award-winning Mariposa chair, with over 80% of the seat hacked away, leaving only the very edge intact.

The design is delightfully absurd. The solid wood EDGEOFYØR Seat is finished in Charcoal Black and paired with Fyrn’s patented brackets in Copper Bronze. It’s gorgeous in that theatrical, slightly menacing way that makes you want to photograph it but not necessarily sit on it. The tagline stamped on this limited edition piece reads “Handcrafted by Fyrn. Engineered for Fear,” which is both brilliant marketing and a fair warning.

To launch the chair, Disney created a darkly funny 30-second social film called “Chainsaw.” Picture this: a dim workshop, the short features a masked craftsman wielding a buzzing chainsaw as he slices away most of a wooden chair, leaving behind only the seat’s edge. It’s horror movie camp meets IKEA assembly instructions, and it works perfectly for the Halloween season. Disney+ positions the chair as a playful reminder that Huluween programming doesn’t allow for casual viewing. It’s a fair assessment, though whether that’s because of the genuinely terrifying content or the extremely uncomfortable seating arrangement is up for debate.

What makes this whole concept especially clever is that it takes a common phrase and transforms it into a physical object. We’ve all heard “edge of your seat” used to describe suspenseful entertainment, but CALLEN and Fyrn actually engineered a chair that removes any other option. It’s experiential marketing at its most literal, turning a streaming experience into something you can touch, photograph, and probably regret sitting on after about five minutes. For Fyrn, a company built on craftsmanship and storytelling, reimagining their Mariposa chair as the EDGEOFYØR Seat offered an opportunity to tackle a more playful design challenge. The fact that a company known for precision furniture design agreed to essentially destroy most of their own chair speaks to the fun spirit behind this collaboration.

This Halloween stunt ties into Disney+’s Huluween programming lineup, which includes everything from classics to fresh releases. This year for Huluween, classics like Scream, The Sixth Sense, Hocus Pocus, and Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas join new arrivals such as The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, Marvel Zombies, The Man in My Basement, and Stay. The programming is extensive enough that you might actually need that uncomfortable chair to keep you alert through a marathon.

At its core, this is design theater in the best possible way. Nobody actually needs a chair with 80% of its seat carved away. But creating one sparks conversation, generates social media buzz, and makes people think differently about how physical objects can enhance digital experiences. It’s the kind of whimsical, slightly chaotic energy that Halloween deserves. The EDGEOFYØR Seat represents something larger happening in brand marketing, where companies are finding creative ways to make digital content feel more tangible. Sure, you could just sit on your regular couch to watch scary movies, but where’s the commitment in that? This chair forces you to literally buy into the experience, even if your back might not thank you for it later.

Twig&Bot’s Elegant Robot-Arm-Carved Guitar Holder

This elegant wall-mounted guitar holder is by Twig&Bot.

That’s the one man shop of Australian design engineer and roboticist Leigh Aitken, who didn’t carve these by hand; that’s the work of his CNC robot arm. The groove that you see in the images below would be virtually impossible to consistently produce by hand.

The groove is for a protective silicone insert.

Aitken’s not messing around with the mounting system; while the ‘bot could’ve undoubtedly carved a keyhole slot, Aitken instead opted for a steel plate.

These are in batch production now, and will shortly be for sale. At press time prices hadn’t been announced.

Understanding the Brilliant Design of an Automatic Center Punch

An automatic center punch is a handy tool for metalworkers and woodworkers. It’s used to make a divot in the material, providing an entry point for a drill bit that might otherwise wander.

Traditionally this was done with an awl or punch in one hand, and a hammer in the other. The automatic design was a huge improvement, in that they can be used one-handed.

But how do they work? Look at the cutaway drawings below:

It might not be obvious at first glance, so look at the red circles below:

Note two things: In the larger red circle, you can see that the spring is actually tapered. Its diameter gets wider moving from right to left. In the smaller red circle, you can see that the anvil of the point is actually domed.

This means that the trip pin, resting on the domed anvil, can laze around a bit. It’s only when pressure is applied that the conical ceiling of the trip pin’s chamber forces it plumb, and into the chamber of the hammer’s chamber:

Machined out of an inch-thick block of brass, the staple-less stapler uses a punch that perforates the paper and folds a tab over to lock the pages together.

“Ergonomically shaped for one-handed use, the Oceanus Brass Stapler is balanced and deeply satisfying to use,” the company writes.

The diminutive stapler is just 2 ¾” square by an inch thick, but being brass, weighs 13 oz. Not as heavy as that mug, but will certainly last you just as long.

The $90 stapler has been a rousing success on Kickstarter; at press time it had garnered $160,000 with 26 days left to pledge.

Concept power lines shaped as animal sculptures can supply energy across the nine states in Austria. Dubbed the Austrian Power Giants, these electricity structures are molded depending on the animal representing the state. Take the stork, a long-necked wading bird, which represents Burgenland for its annual stork migration, with Rust being considered a city of storks. Then, there’s the stag, the animal symbol for the wooded foothills of the Alps in Lower Austria. The nine federal states where the design teams hope to install the power lines shaped as animal sculptures include Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg, and Vienna.

Stork and stag energy lines have been designed for pretesting

 

The design teams – a collaboration between the companies Austrian Power Grid, GP designpartners and BauCon – say that the stork and stag designs have already been developed and pre-tested for structural stability and high-voltage performance to check whether producing power lines shaped as animal structures is even possible. They expect that these nature-inspired designs can increase ‘public acceptance of grid expansion projects in their respective regions’ and become symbols of fauna-themed infrastructure. They add that traditional power line designs are not publicly well-received across the country’s regions, so by crafting animal sculptures as power lines, they hope that their reception will be more positive. 

 

For them, it’s a way fo the towering infrastructure to ‘harmonize with nature’ and ‘to strengthen the economic and tourism location in the regions and ultimately lead to increased acceptance of grid expansion projects by the general public.’ So far, only two of these Austrian Power Giants, the stork and the stag, have been designed for pretesting to see if they can be built and if their structural and electrical engineering are feasible. The miniature models of the Austrian Power Giants are set to be on display for public viewing at the Red Dot Museum in Singapore until October 2026, after having received the Red Dot Award 2025 for concept design in electrification and decarbonization.

This $500M Airport Just Became the Greenest Gateway to Cambodia

Picture this: you’re landing in one of the world’s oldest civilizations, and the first thing you see isn’t sterile white corridors and fluorescent lighting. Instead, you’re greeted by 200 hand-crafted sculptures, including a central bronze-cast Buddha, surrounded by mature trees rising through a soaring central space. Welcome to Techo International Airport, the new gateway to Cambodia that just opened in Phnom Penh, and honestly, it might make you rethink everything you thought airports could be.

Foster + Partners, the legendary British architecture firm, just completed what could be one of the most sustainable airports in the region. The building features a curved steel structure wrapped in lattice panels that mimics something you’d never expect in an ultra-modern transportation hub: a tree canopy. And not just any trees, but structural trees spanning 36 metres that support a lightweight steel grid shell, creating this incredible sense of being sheltered by nature itself.

What makes this airport absolutely fascinating is how deeply it’s rooted in Cambodian culture. The undulating roof form references Cambodia’s temples and palaces, while 180 skylights and a latticed soffit inspired by traditional basket weaving diffuse daylight across the interior. It’s like the designers took the essence of ancient Khmer architecture and translated it into a contemporary language that feels both timeless and cutting-edge. The warm interior materials evoke that traditional vernacular style, but in a way that doesn’t feel like a theme park version of history.

But here’s where things get really impressive. The terminal will be almost entirely run on energy generated by an onsite photovoltaic farm. We’re talking about a massive international airport that’s basically solar-powered. The sustainability approach goes beyond just slapping some panels on the roof, though. Deep roof overhangs reduce solar gain and mechanical cooling demand, while native planting including Romduol trees and palms is used throughout the terminal to enhance air quality. The whole building is designed to work with Cambodia’s tropical climate rather than fighting against it.

Walking through Techo feels completely different from your typical airport experience. There are minimal level changes throughout the terminal and views out to the apron to improve clarity and make movement intuitive. No more getting lost trying to find your gate or dragging your luggage up endless stairs and escalators. Everything flows naturally, and the greenery makes you feel less like you’re in a massive transportation facility and more like you’re in some kind of futuristic garden pavilion.

The scale of this project is pretty mind-blowing too. Located about 20 kilometers south of Phnom Penh’s city center, the first phase can accommodate up to 13 million passengers a year, with subsequent phases adding a second airfoil wing to increase capacity to 30 million. The whole thing was built in phases using a modular construction system, which means Cambodia can grow this airport as their tourism and economy expand without having to start from scratch.

What I love most is how this airport doesn’t apologize for being beautiful while also being functional. So many modern airports feel like they’re designed by accountants, all efficiency and no soul. But Foster + Partners managed to create something that serves as both a practical transportation hub and a celebration of Cambodian identity. It’s the kind of design that makes architecture feel meaningful again, not just as buildings we pass through, but as spaces that tell stories and create genuine emotional experiences.

For travelers, this means Cambodia now has an airport that actually makes you excited to arrive. And for the design world, it’s proof that sustainability and cultural authenticity don’t have to be sacrificed for functionality. Sometimes you really can have it all: a building that’s gorgeous, green, and genuinely useful. Now if only every airport could take notes from Techo’s playbook, flying might actually become something to look forward to again.

Inside Green House, the spatial experience unfolds as a single continuous room, a flowing volume punctuated by niches and varied ceiling heights. The Japanese research and design studio Shin Aoki and Partners connects spaces vertically and horizontally, inviting movement and new ways of using them. Windows positioned at multiple heights and orientations filter in changing patterns of natural light, framing fragments of sky, foliage, and neighboring life along the greenway. Throughout the day and year, the interior shifts in tone and atmosphere, reflecting the rhythm of time outside. The architects conceive Green House as a living organism, a structure that invites its residents to continually discover ways to inhabit it.
