Aesthetics

You probably wouldn’t even be able to tell the Even Realities G1 is wearable tech if you meet someone on the street wearing a pair. Sure, they might look like slightly retro Pantos, but they’re a far cry from even the slimmest XR glasses from the likes of Xreal or Viture. You can clearly see the eyes of the person wearing them, and the tech is practically invisible, which is exactly the point.

The design of the Even Realities G1 is on the plain and minimal side, a stark contrast to the majority of smart glasses and XR/AR headsets currently in the market, even those claiming to be fashionable and stylish. Sure, it’s not going to compete with high-end luxury spectacles, but they’re not entirely off the mark either. Unless you look really closely, you might simply presume them to be a pair of thick-framed glasses.

The form of the glasses might be simple, but their construction is anything but. The frame is made from magnesium alloy with a coating that’s fused with sandstone, while the temples use a titanium alloy on the outer sides and soft silicone on the inner surfaces. The mixture of quality materials not only gives the Even Realities G1 a premium character but also a lightweight form that’s only ever so slightly heavier than your run-of-the-mill prescription eyeglasses.

While the G1 most looks like normal eyewear, the temple tips are dead giveaways that things are not what they seem. The blocky, paddle-shaped tips that house batteries and electronics are definitely larger than what you’d find on most glasses. They’re not obnoxiously big, but they do tend to stick out a bit, and they’re hard to “unsee” once you’ve noticed their presence.

Despite looking quite aesthetic, the Even Realities G1 isn’t pretending to be some posh fashion accessory. After all, the circular G1A and rectangular G1B options hardly cover all possible eyewear designs, and the limited color selection won’t suit everyone’s tastes. Rather than something you flaunt or call attention to, these smart glasses are designed to be an “everyday wear” and disappear into the background, making tech invisible without making it unusable, perfect for the dad who wants to stay connected without looking like he’s wearing a gadget at the family barbecue.

Ergonomics

If you’ve ever tried any of those hi-tech wearables promising the next wave of computing, then you’d probably know that you’d never wear any of those glasses or visors for more than just an hour or two every day. They may have impressive technologies and apps, but they become practically useless once you take them off, especially when you have to step out into the real world.

In contrast, the Even Realities G1 is something you’d be able to wear for hours on end, indoors or outdoors. Made from lightweight materials with a construction that even throws away screws to reduce the heft, it’s almost mind-blowing to think that the glasses houses any electronics at all. This level of comfort is honestly the G1’s most important asset, because it allows people to experience its smart features far longer than any Quest or Viture.

When it comes to eyewear, however, prescription lenses have always been a sore point for many consumers, and this is no exception. Because it integrates waveguide optics into the lens, you’ll have to pay extra to have customized prescription lenses when you buy an Even Realities G1. It can be a bit nerve-wracking to ensure you get all the measurements and figures right, especially since you can’t return or exchange glasses with customized lenses.

While the G1 eyeglasses are definitely comfortable to wear, the same can’t exactly be said when it comes to manually interacting with them. While most smart glasses and headsets have controls near your temples, the G1’s touch-sensitive areas are at the temple tips, which would be sitting behind your ears when you’re wearing the glasses. They might feel awkward to reach, and those with long hairstyles might find it difficult to use. Fortunately, you will rarely touch those tips except to activate some functions, but it can still be an unsatisfactory experience when you do.

Performance

The Even Realities G1 takes a brilliantly focused approach to smart eyewear, prioritizing elegant design and practical functionality over unnecessary tech bloat. The 640×200 green monochrome display may seem modest, but it’s deliberate choice that enables the G1 to maintain a sleek, stylish profile. The absence of cameras and speakers isn’t a limitation but a thoughtful design decision that enhances both wearability and privacy, allowing users to seamlessly integrate this technology into their daily lives without social awkwardness. The magic of the G1 lies in its delivery of information directly to your field of vision in a way that not only delights but also transforms how you interact with digital content.

The core Even Realities G1 experience revolves around bringing only critical information to your attention and keeping distractions away, all without disconnecting you from reality and the people around you. Its text-centric interface, displayed by two micro-LED displays, one on each lens, ensures that information is distilled down to its most essential. The QuickNote and Calendar features are particularly valuable for fathers juggling work and family responsibilities, allowing them to process their to-do lists perfectly on schedule without missing a beat of family time. Spending quality time with your child then suddenly remembering you need to buy batteries on your next errand run? No more frantically scampering for pen and paper or even your phone; just tap and speak.

Of course, the smart glasses really shine when it comes to the, well, smart functionality, most of which unsurprisingly revolve around words, both spoken and displayed. Transcription, which is used when making Quick Notes, records your voice and saves it alongside the transcribed text. Fathers who find themselves in never-ending meetings no longer need to worry about missing a beat. Not only do they get to keep notes, but they also receive a summary and recap thanks to the G1’s AI capabilities, a game-changer for busy dads who need to process information efficiently.

Translation can make international trips quite fun, at least for some interactions, as you’ll be able to see actual translated captions floating in the air like subtitles on a video. Dads who give a lot of talks, business presentations, interviews, or broadcast videos will definitely love the Teleprompter feature, which can advance the script just based on the words you’re speaking. No more worrying about missing important points during that big presentation, leaving more mental bandwidth for what really matters. It’s also perfect for a captivating Career Day show that will do your kid proud.

The accuracy of Even Realities’ speech recognition and AI is fairly good, though there are times when it will require a bit of patience and understanding. There’s a noticeable delay when translating what people say in real time, for example, and it might miss words if the person is speaking too quickly. Navigation can be a hit or miss, depending on your location, and the visual direction prompts are not always reliable.

The latter is also one of the cases where the absence of built-in speakers feels a bit more pronounced. There’s no audio feedback, which could be useful for guided turn-by-turn navigation. Even AI can hear you, but it can’t talk back to you. Everything will be delivered only through text you have to read, which might not always be possible in some cases. Admittedly, the addition of such hardware, no matter how small, will also add weight to the glasses, so Even Realities chose their battles wisely.

The Even Realities G1 is advertised to last for 1.5 days, and it indeed lasts at least more than a day. The stylish wireless charging case, which has a built-in 2,000mAh battery, extends that uptime to five days. Charging the glasses is as simple as putting them inside the case, no need to align any contact points, as long as you remember to fold the left arm first before the right arm. Oddly enough, there’s no battery level indicator on the glasses, even in the dashboard HUD.

Even Realities focused on making the G1 simple, both in design and in operation. Sometimes even to the point of oversimplification. To reduce complexity, for example, each side of the glasses connects to a smartphone separately via Bluetooth, which unfortunately increases the risk of the two sides being out of sync if one or the other connection drops. Turning the glasses into shades is a simple case of slapping on clip-on shades that are not only an additional expense but also something you could lose somewhere.

Sustainability

By cutting down on the volume of the product, Even Realities also helps cut down waste material, especially the use of plastics. The G1 utilizes more metals than plastic, not only delivering a premium design but also preferring more renewable materials. The company is particularly proud of its packaging as well, which uses 100% recyclable, eco-friendly cardboard.

While magnesium and titanium alloys contribute to the durability of the product, the Even Realities G1 is not exactly what you might consider to be a weather-proof piece of wearable tech. It has no formal IP rating, and the glasses are only said to be resistant to splashes and light rain. It can accompany you on your runs, sure, but you’ll have to treat it with much care. Not that it will have much practical use during your workouts in the first place.

Value

Discreet, useful, and simple, the Even Realities G1 smart glasses proudly stand in opposition to the literal heavyweights of the smart eyewear market that are practically strapping a computer on your face. It offers an experience that focuses on the most important functions and information you’d want to have in front of your eyes and pushes unnecessary distractions out of your sight. Most importantly, however, it keeps the whole world clearly in view, allowing you to connect to your digital life without disconnecting you from the people around you.

The Even Realities G1 would almost be perfect for this hyper-focused use case if not for its price tag. At $599, it’s easily one of the more expensive pairs of smart spectacles you’ll see on the market, and that’s only for the glasses themselves. For custom prescription lenses, you need to add another $150 on top, not to mention the $50 (normally $100) clip-on shades for those extra bright days. Given its limited functionality, the G1 definitely feels a bit overpriced. But when you consider how lightweight, distraction-free, and useful it can be, it comes off more as an investment for the future.

For family and friends looking for a meaningful tech gift this Father’s Day, the G1 offers something truly unique: a way to stay on top of work responsibilities while remaining fully present for family moments. And now smart glasses are coming, promising access to all of that and threatening to further drown us with information we don’t really need.

The Even Realities G1 is both a breath of fresh air and a bold statement against that trend. Not only is it lightweight and comfortable, but it even looks like normal glasses! Rather than throw everything and the kitchen sink into it, its design and functionality are completely intentional, focusing only on essential experiences and features to keep you productive. It’s not trying to turn you into Tony Stark, but it will help make you feel like a superhero as you breeze through your tasks while still being present to the people who really matter the most in your life.

The Classic VW Beetle Gets a Savage Off-Road Makeover

Twisted Automotive, a UK-based company known for its custom Defender builds, has unveiled its latest project – a radically reimagined Volkswagen Beetle called the T-Bug. This bespoke off-roader is a modern interpretation of the classic Baja Bug, engineered to deliver enhanced performance while preserving the original model’s distinct aesthetic.

Built from a 1960s Volkswagen Beetle chassis, the T-Bug is a one-off vehicle crafted as part of Twisted’s “Special Project” line. The custom-built retains the recognizable Beetle silhouette but undergoes a comprehensive transformation to handle rugged off-road conditions. Twisted reinforces the chassis, integrates new suspension geometry, and fits it with large off-road tires and beadlock wheels to ensure improved ground clearance and terrain capability.

The Most Ridiculously Cool Spacebar Ever Made Looks Like Some Quantum Alien Tech

The first time you see it, your brain doesn’t register it as a keycap. It looks more like a diorama ripped straight out of a Pixar-directed sci-fi short – complete with a lone astronaut, and some sufficiently advanced quantum tech, all sealed in resin like they’re cryogenically frozen for your desk. That’s the Dwarf Factory Astrovert Quantum-ixer Spacebar. And calling it “just” a spacebar would be like calling the Millennium Falcon a cargo ship.

This 6.25U artisan slab isn’t trying to be discreet. It demands attention, and frankly, earns it. Dwarf Factory’s MO has always leaned into visual storytelling, and the Quantum-ixer continues that trend with unapologetic whimsy. The SAR3 profile makes it ergonomically familiar if you’re already swimming in Cherry MX-compatible gear, but ergonomics are arguably beside the point. You’re not slamming this $99 artifact into your keyboard for WPM gains. You’re doing it because it lights up like a moonlit spaceship hangar when your RGB kicks in.

Dwarf Factory doesn’t really do one-off designs. They build universes. The Quantum-ixer spacebar is the final chapter in their Astrovert series, and it plays like the climax of a well-paced space opera. According to them, this piece is the technological leap the Astrovert crew needed – essentially, the device that stabilizes their jumps through space-time. It’s less of a decorative flourish and more like the mission-critical core of their interstellar saga. The astronaut, the sidekick, the bizarre apparatus – they’re all locked in, mid-adventure, frozen inside resin like a scene from a comic book panel. This isn’t an homage to sci-fi; it’s an artifact from it, rendered in the same obsessive detail that defines everything Dwarf Factory touches.

There are four colorways, each with its own visual flavor. T-800 channels a brutalist, chrome-heavy vibe – dark and industrial, almost noir. The 94B feels cooler and more clinical, with icy blue tones. PickIE takes a more playful turn, leaning into candy-colored optimism, while 14512F lands in deep-space territory with its moody purples and inky blacks. All of them look like artifacts pulled from different galaxies, unified by their surreal attention to detail.

If your keyboard has backlighting (especially RGB) the translucent elements let that light filter through like some unholy alien core reactor. Sure, the spacebar has always been the most iconic key and never really needed labeling or backlit text, so something as whimsical as the Quantum-ixer feels appropriate for the keyboard. Why keep that piece of real estate empty? Why keep it boring? When you could, instead, outfit it with sci-fi tech?

The spacebar fits like a dream on Cherry MX switches and clones, holding a 6.25u layout that’s standard for most mechanical keyboards. That SAR3 profile gives it a slight sculpt, comfortably sitting under your thumbs without disrupting the rhythm of your board. It’s plug-and-play in the most interstellar sense.

Each one ships in a kraft box with stickers, finger gloves, and even a loose stem tightening kit, which somehow makes the whole thing feel like you’re unboxing lab equipment or a prop from a cyberpunk film. It’s silly. It’s self-aware. It’s perfect.

At a glance, it might seem excessive to drop nearly a hundred bucks on a single keycap, but this isn’t about function anymore. It’s about expression. Dwarf Factory’s Quantum-ixer doesn’t improve your typing speed or enhance your workflow. What it does is transform your workspace into a miniature cosmos – something you interact with every day, but now through the lens of fantasy, imagination, and a little weirdness. And maybe, just maybe, that bit of storytelling is worth the splurge.

With a radical new proposal by Danish maritime architecture studio MAST, Rotterdam’s Spoorweghaven neighborhood is poised for a transformation. In the heart of a disused dock just southeast of the city center, the team envisions a floating community. Together with locally-based contractor BIK bouw, the prefabricated, modular project will bring over one hundred apartments supported by public green space, moorings, commercial units and a new harbor for leisure. It’s a plan informed by its local context and scaled to continental ambition, making Spoorweghaven the largest floating housing development ever proposed in Europe.

 

The proposal reflects the spatial pressures faced by cities throughout the Netherlands. Confronted with the need to produce a million new homes within the decade, and with little vacant land left to build on, the country is turning to its most abundant resource: water. MAST’s design responds with a flexible model for growth that bypasses the ecological cost of dredging or land reclamation. In Spoorweghaven, can expand its housing stock without erasing the harbor’s identity.

MAST’s floating community at Spoorweghaven will blend into Rotterdam’s existing fabric by bicycle and by boat. The site plan extends local cycling routes and introduces new blue corridors of transport, creating seamless links between land and water. The design incorporates bridges at both ends of the dock, enabling pedestrian access to floating walkways, public piers, and bicycle storage. These threads reweave the harbor into the city’s daily flow, restoring continuity to a once-isolated stretch of waterfront.

 

The project is imagined as a layered civic space. Communal gardens, floating parks, and shared roof terraces are arranged to encourage both quiet retreat and spontaneous gathering. The architecture withdraws in places to give room for the harbor to remain visible and accessible. Rather than cordon off the water, the project draws it in, inviting it to become part of the everyday social fabric.

Prefabrication for low-impact urbanism

 

MAST’s plans for Spoorweghaven will also support aquatic life of Rotterdam. In collaboration with Biomatrix, MAST will install over 900 square meters of floating reedbeds along the harbor’s perimeter. These islands act as natural filters, removing pollutants from the water while forming habitats for birds, fish and invertebrates. The design contributes to the city’s broader ecological network, showing how architecture on water can become an engine for environmental repair.

 

Once underway, construction will take shape off-site. MAST’s floating structures will be built of CLT and assembled away from the dock before being floated into place. This prefabricated method drastically reduces construction noise, traffic and material waste in the neighborhood. It also allows for reversibility: the homes can be relocated or dismantled entirely if the conditions of the site change. Such adaptability is at the core of MAST’s strategy for circular design.

RIP FaceID, Hello Palm Recognition: How Veins In Your Palm Are The Next Biometric Boom

For years, unlocking your devices felt like a tug-of-war between convenience and security. Face recognition stumbled if you wore sunglasses. Fingerprint scanners balked when your hands were sweaty or greasy. Passwords? A relic, and an insecure one at that. Yet here we are, watching palm recognition quietly outmaneuver every other biometric tech on the block. No flashy marketing blitz. No grand promises. Just a stealthy revolution that feels almost too good to be true.

Two products recently caught my eye – both harnessing palm biometrics to astonishing effect. One was a smart video doorbell called the Lockin Veno Pro, the other, a POS-style authentication device from AliPay. Both are eerily fast, devastatingly accurate, and probably most importantly, contact-free. How do they work? Well, the TL;DR of it is – instead of scanning your face (which can be spoofed) or fingerprints (which can be copied), these systems scan the ‘pattern’ of the veins running inside your palm – something that’s unique to you, and absolutely can’t be faked.

How Palm Recognition Works: The Veins Have It

Palm recognition doesn’t just skim the surface the way fingerprint scanners do. It dives deeper, literally, mapping out the intricate vein patterns that run underneath your skin. Unlike facial recognition, which relies heavily on external features that can be masked, altered, or spoofed (facial recognition also has a fairly high error rate – i.e., twins), palm vein patterns are virtually immutable. They’re established early in life, remain consistent over time, and sit safely hidden beneath the skin’s surface, making forgery exponentially harder.

The hardware involved usually consists of near-infrared (NIR) sensors paired with high-resolution cameras. NIR light penetrates the skin and highlights the hemoglobin in your veins, creating a unique, high-contrast map. Combined with palm geometry (shape, size, fingerprint texture), the resulting biometric signature is like a multi-layered password that you literally carry in your hand. And the numbers back it up – authentication accuracy rates often exceed 99.99%, with false acceptance rates (FAR) as low as 0.00008%, based on Fujitsu’s and Amazon’s published tech specs.

On a technical level, it’s utterly brilliant. On a human level, it feels almost like science fiction sliding naturally into daily life. Hover your hand over a sensor, and *beep* you’re in. No contact, no fuss, no need to adjust your posture like a mannequin posing for a face scan.

Why It’s Winning: Frictionless, Foolproof, and COVID-Proof

Speed is king in the world of consumer tech, and palm recognition delivers with sub-second authentication speeds. Huawei’s new smart doorbell demo showed a recognition time of about 0.3 seconds – faster than a facial scan and certainly faster than fumbling with a keypad. Even if you’re wearing a motorcycle helmet or an N95 mask, the system doesn’t care. Your palm is enough.

From a security standpoint, palm biometrics offer a triple threat: hidden patterns (veins), surface textures (fingerprints), and overall geometry (hand shape). Trying to spoof all three simultaneously would require not just a lifelike mold but one with the internal vascular structure intact, an order of magnitude harder than faking a fingerprint with gelatin.

And then there’s hygiene. Post-pandemic, “contactless” went from nice-to-have to absolutely mandatory in consumer tech. Palm recognition hits the sweet spot between maximum security and zero-touch UX. You don’t need to touch grimy surfaces, reducing germ transmission. The psychological friction – the subconscious “ick” factor of using shared touchpoints – simply vanishes.

Where It’s Already Showing Up: From POS Systems to Front Doors

Lockin’s Veno Pro wasn’t some moonshot prototype. It’s real, shipping, and designed for mass-market adoption. The system lets homeowners register their palm signatures so that trusted users – family and friends – can unlock the front door with a simple wave. No key fumbling, no password sharing, no ugly keypads bolted to the wall.

Amazon, too, is betting big on palm biometrics with its Amazon One platform. Deployed in Whole Foods stores and stadiums, the tech lets customers pay for groceries or event tickets with a hover of the hand. Again, no wallets, no phones, no QR codes.

Even smartphones are beginning to toy with palm scanning as an alternative or supplement to face and fingerprint unlocks. Though not yet mainstream, the conversation is heating up fast among mobile OEMs who recognize that future-proof authentication needs to account for masks, hats, helmets, and, frankly, human laziness.

The real kicker? Once trained, palm recognition systems tend to outperform facial systems in low-light conditions and are less sensitive to age-related changes. Your hand at 70 looks, for authentication purposes, almost identical to your hand at 20.

The Few Flaws: Gloves, Injuries, and Public Perception

Nothing’s perfect. While palm recognition shines in most scenarios, it does stumble occasionally. If you’re wearing winter mittens, motorcycle gloves, or surgical gloves, the system is dead on arrival. And while minor cuts or calluses won’t throw it off, major injuries, burns, or medical conditions that alter vein structure could affect performance.

Another hurdle is cultural. Hand scanning still carries a whiff of “corporate security” to it, thanks to its long-standing use in high-security environments like labs and airports. For mass consumer acceptance, companies will need to shed that clinical vibe and make palm scanning feel warm, intuitive, even joyful.

There’s also the issue of privacy. Consumers are rightly wary of giving tech giants access to one more piece of their biological identity. Vein patterns are even more immutable than fingerprints – once stolen, they can’t be “reset” like a password. Ensuring that palm data stays encrypted, anonymized, and device-bound (i.e., not uploaded to central servers) will be crucial for trust.

What’s Next: The Invisible Key to Everything?

Imagine a future where you can unlock your car, access your office, check into your hotel, pay for your coffee, and sign into your laptop without ever touching a device or revealing a password. Your hand, something you’ve carried effortlessly your whole life, becomes the universal credential.

Tech trends suggest that multi-modal biometrics will dominate the future – combinations of face, voice, and palm, dynamically weighted based on context. Your phone might prefer facial recognition when you’re casually browsing at home, but shift to palm scanning when you’re masked up on a city subway. Just make sure to wave your palm discreetly rather than openly doing a certain ‘Roman salute’.

Palm recognition fits beautifully into that landscape because it’s discreet, flexible, and ridiculously hard to fake. As machine learning algorithms sharpen and sensor hardware gets smaller and cheaper, we could see palm authentication tucked into wearables, laptops, car dashboards, and even public kiosks within the next three years.

ARROWatch introduces Segmented Geometry as Time Interface

 

The ARROWatch, developed by Ion Lucin and Acero Ionyc, introduces an alternative approach to time representation through minimal, geometric design and a nontraditional interface. The concept is based on rethinking how time is visually communicated and interpreted.

 

Unlike conventional analog watches where hour and minute markers are continuously visible and time is indicated by rotating hands, the ARROWatch employs a single rotating dial segmented by eight transparent dividers. These dividers divide the 12-hour dial into eight equal 45-degree sections. Three of these sections are colored to form an arrow shape.

Rethinking Time with Ion Lucin’s ARROWatch

 

The arrow is positioned opposite to the current time markers but points directly to them, enabling time reading through geometric orientation. The time markers are simplified, replacing full hour and minute numerals with key intervals: exact hours, half hours, and additional markers at 15 and 45 minutes. The rotating dial displays this information in conjunction with the fixed arrow form, presenting an approximate yet intuitive reading of time.

 

The ARROWatch, developed by designer Ion Lucin, is currently in its development phase, with a crowdfunding campaign launched on Indiegogo to support production.

Spanning nine meters, it includes an open kitchen, king-size loft bedroom, lounge, and a custom bathroom featuring a keg sink, ice tub bathtub, and corrugated iron shower walls that amplify its rugged appeal.

Crafted entirely by hand, it features a hydro-mechanical column with a manual drive, constructed from brass, copper, bronze, and glass where each component is soldered and threaded with meticulous care.
