The shimmering waterways of Rotterdam are about to gain a new landmark, one that floats gently above the waterline and reimagines how cities might respond to the pressures of growth. The Spoorweghaven community, designed by Danish maritime architects MAST, presents a vivid vision for the future. With over a hundred low-cost apartments, commercial spaces, and a recreational harbor, this floating development is more than an engineering feat—it is a celebration of Scandinavian ingenuity and urban adaptability.

What draws me as a design enthusiast to Spoorweghaven is not just its scale, but the quiet radicalism of its concept. In a country where water and land have always danced a delicate waltz, this project proposes a new choreography—one where homes, public spaces, and even gardens gently float above the ground. The design respects the Dutch tradition of living with water, yet speaks with a distinctly Nordic sensibility, favoring clean lines, communal zones, and a seamless connection to nature.

The project’s sustainability credentials are as compelling as its visual impact. MAST collaborated with the Scottish company Biomatrix to create over 900 square meters of floating reed beds that encircle the perimeter of the site. These reeds do more than beautify the edge—they cleanse the harbor water, attract birds and fish, and bring a soft, living border to the modular forms. The buildings themselves are constructed off-site and then towed into position, a method that minimizes disturbance and celebrates the logic of Scandinavian prefab traditions.

Spoorweghaven is designed to be porous, welcoming, and deeply connected to the city around it. Public walkways and cycle paths thread through the floating neighborhood, linking it to Rotterdam’s extensive bike network. Residents will glide from apartment to city center by bicycle, or step out onto communal terraces and rooftop gardens that offer both privacy and a sense of shared belonging. The floating moorings create pockets for recreation and social gathering, encouraging spontaneous encounters on water and land alike.

The sense of community is gently woven into every aspect of the development. Shared green spaces and walkways become informal meeting points, while the continuous blue ribbon of navigable water invites both residents and visitors to experience the city from an entirely new vantage. The architecture does not impose, but rather settles in lightly and thoughtfully, making space for both human and non-human life.

As cities across Europe wrestle with housing shortages and the realities of climate change, Spoorweghaven stands as a persuasive argument for embracing the possibilities of water. It is a place where Scandinavian design values—simplicity, sustainability, and a close relationship with the natural world—find a new expression. The project is an invitation to rethink what urban living can look like when it is guided by respect for both place and people, floating gently into the future.

This Twitch-Themed Macro Pad Is the Minimalist Stream Deck We Needed

It isn’t often that a company’s logo translates well to actual hardware. Like the Ferrari logo is niche, and doesn’t apply to actual products, but the Mercedes-Benz logo, which could easily be a keyring, a steering wheel, or rims. Another example is the Batarang, which, out of either sheer coincidence or great branding, looks exactly like Batman’s logo. That being said, I wouldn’t necessarily call the Twitch logo a great example of what I just explained, but designer Andrea Dalle Fabbriche turned the iconic blurb that streamers know too well into a macro pad that handles every aspect of streaming.

The product looks exactly like the Twitch logo, which feels less like hardware and more like functional memorabilia at this point. 8 keys and 3 sliders handle all your streaming needs, from emoting to muting-unmuting, starting/stopping a stream, and adjusting mic levels. The keys are mechanical, and adjustable too, which means aside from reprogramming layouts, you can swap keycaps too, creating a Twitch hardware device that uniquely suits your needs.

The design prioritizes simplicity: a 3×2 grid, tactile feedback from linear or tactile switch options (likely in the MX family), and a vertical slider on the left that adjusts volume or mic gain control. It’s unbranded, deliberately stripped of logos aside from the silhouette itself, because the shape is the brand. Why is it genius? Because it emotionally binds the streamer to the service. Nobody’s going to use a Twitch macropad streaming on Discord or YouTube. Why would they? It looks weird, and contrarian.

The clicky keys have that satisfying tactile feel that mechanical fans love, and there’s a vertical slider tucked into the left side of the pad – probably for mic gain or stream volume. What makes the design smarter than it looks is its layout. The grid is intuitive. No wasted space.

Because it’s modular, every key is a blank canvas. Swap the caps. Reassign the functions. If you’re used to muscle-mapping macros on your keyboard or stacking hotkeys in software, this thing simplifies that whole mental load. You could set it up to control OBS, Discord, lighting, music, anything that accepts keyboard input.

Even though it’s a concept, the product feels grounded in actual pain points. Streamers don’t need flashy RGB bricks with 32 touchscreens, they need something quick, responsive, and dead easy to read mid-stream. This pad leans into that need with a style that doesn’t overpower its function. If it ever sees production and lands under $100 with decent mapping software, it’ll punch far above its size.

Set at the foot of Houyanta Hill in Zhejiang Province, the Shanxia Cultural Station by MUFU ARCHLAB is informed by its proximity to landscape and ritual. Located directly across from the open field where Shanxia Village’s centuries-old Bench Dragon Lantern ceremony unfolds each year, the project functions as a cultural threshold, bridging everyday life and the temporality of celebration.

 

The Chinese practice’s design approach responds closely to spatial context and local identity, resting the building on a former residential plot, with a scale and orientation that subtly signals its public intent. To its north, the ceremonial field remains untouched; behind it, the unique rock formations of the hills form a natural backdrop. This pairing of geological and cultural terrain informs the stepped brick layers of the facade, as well as the project’s logic which reinforces patterns of movement.

The decision to locate a new public building here is inseparable from the village’s long cultural trajectory. Historically known as Shiyou (travel-friendly), Shanxia has produced notable scholars and retained strong ritual traditions despite recent urban encroachment. The Bench Dragon Lantern, held on the seventeenth day of the first lunar month, is its most visible expression, a vivid procession in which villagers shoulder wooden benches arranged to form the body of a dragon. Each family contributes a segment, and each new marriage extends the dragon’s length, turning the ritual into a living diagram of kinship, growth, and shared presence.

 

MUFU ARCHLAB’s design is shaped by this annual convergence, with the Cultural Station becoming an instrument in the festival’s perpetuation. The tiered brick structure supports its performance logistically while reinforcing its spatial centrality in village life. Further, it provides infrastructure through a subtle framing. In this way, the project reflects a larger sensibility in the architects‘ work to treat architecture as one of the ongoing mediums of culture-making.

LEGO Twister Diorama spins up a nostalgic storm, relives chaos of the movie as an interactive collectible

When Twister hit theaters in 1996, it introduced audiences to the thrilling world of storm chasing. The film followed meteorologists Jo and Bill Harding as they tracked a series of powerful tornadoes across Oklahoma. Directed by Jan de Bont and written by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin, the movie combined disaster action with a scientific subplot centered on an experimental weather instrument named “Dorothy.” Its dynamic visuals, especially the CGI tornadoes and flying cow sequence, left a strong mark on pop culture and inspired a lasting interest in severe weather and meteorology.

Now, decades after its release, Twister has inspired a unique creation in a different medium: LEGO. The Twister Diorama, designed by LEGO fan ComicMischief and hosted on the LEGO Ideas platform, reimagines the chaos of the film using brick-built ingenuity. More than just a nostalgic nod, the set offers a detailed and interactive representation of one of the movie’s most iconic scenes.

At the heart of the diorama is a motorized tornado constructed with a clever mix of earth-toned bricks. The twister appears to spin and move across a base representing a rural stretch of road and farmland, complete with a damaged cornfield and scattered debris. The rotating element is designed to chase a red pickup truck, a reference to the vehicle driven by Bill Harding in the film. Attached to the truck bed is the Dorothy weather sensor, a central device from the movie, faithfully recreated in miniature form.

Adding to the set’s character are three minifigures: Bill Harding, Dr. Jo Harding, and Dr. Melissa Reeves. Each figure features recognizable outfits and accessories that align with their roles in the film. A flying cow, suspended in midair by a transparent rod, adds a playful but instantly recognizable touch that echoes one of the movie’s most memorable scenes. The design does more than reference the source material—it captures movement, suspense, and even a touch of humor, all within the limited scale of LEGO bricks. Guesthouse Lake Tahoe Redefines Mountain Hospitality Through Architectural Innovation

The concept of residential hospitality just shifted dramatically in downtown Truckee, California. Guesthouse Lake Tahoe launched this spring as something entirely different. Located at 10403 High Street, this nearly 4,000-square-foot property represents the first flagship location for Guesthouse, a members-only collection of rental homes that prioritizes design innovation as much as white-glove service. What happens when you combine Ryan Group Architects’ spatial mastery with an eclectic team of interior designers led by Halfdan Pedersen in the Sierra Nevada mountains? The result challenges everything we thought we knew about luxury mountain retreats, creating a new category of hospitality that feels more like discovering a meticulously curated private residence than checking into any traditional accommodation. This project demonstrates how collaborative design can completely reimagine what premium group travel means in 2025.

Why This Design Team Collaboration Actually Works

Ryan Group Architects approached this project with a philosophy that mountain architecture doesn’t have to choose between authenticity and innovation. Their design for Guesthouse Lake Tahoe establishes what they call a “timeless sensibility” that respects Truckee’s historic character while introducing contemporary spatial concepts that feel both familiar and surprising.

The interior design represents a fascinating collaboration between multiple creative voices, with Halfdan Pedersen leading the charge alongside Olympia Pearl of Olympia Pearl Design and Sally Lyons of Blue Skies 3D, while the Michael Hsu Office Of Architecture curated all furniture and art selections. Pedersen, known for designing soulful and eclectic hotels, restaurants, shops, and residences across the United States and Iceland, pulled inspiration directly from Truckee’s historic origins and stunning mountain scenery to create what he describes as a “laidback second-home atmosphere that allows the views to take center stage.” The design language reads as both sophisticated and approachable, using traditional mountain house proportions but reimagining how those spaces connect and flow together. Rather than overwhelming guests with rustic mountain clichés, the interiors create a refined backdrop that enhances the natural beauty visible through floor-to-ceiling windows. Tall ceilings amplify the sense of space while cozy, nature-inspired elements help bring the outdoors inside, resulting in an authentic “Old World meets New World” design aesthetic that celebrates rather than competes with its Truckee-Tahoe environment.

How 4,000 Square Feet Becomes Something Much Bigger

The spatial experience unfolds across what sources describe as either 4,000 or 4,500 square feet, depending on how you measure the extensive outdoor areas. Four bedrooms include three king-sized suites, with 5.5 bathrooms distributed throughout the residence to ensure privacy even when accommodating the full capacity of 10 guests.

What makes this layout exceptional goes far beyond simple square footage calculations. The central great room features a wraparound fireplace that serves as both an architectural focal point and a functional gathering space, seamlessly connecting to a dining room and an open-concept kitchen designed to support everything from intimate family meals to professional chef preparations. An upstairs loft provides the perfect breakaway space for smaller group conversations or work sessions, while a media room offers flexibility for screening films, holding business presentations, or collaborative brainstorming sessions. The fully finished flex garage space includes its own kitchenette and mountain views, essentially functioning as an additional living area that can adapt to whatever groups need most. These aren’t afterthought spaces but carefully planned zones that recognize how modern travelers actually use vacation properties, offering flexibility that traditional hotel layouts simply cannot match.

The outdoor experience deserves equal attention to the interior design achievements. Three expansive decks create multiple zones for various activities throughout the day, from morning coffee rituals to evening gatherings around the dedicated fire pit, complete with built-in seating. The property even includes a hitching post where guests can tie up horses before or after rides, acknowledging Truckee’s authentic mountain culture rather than sanitizing it for urban sensibilities. This attention to authentic details extends the usable space well beyond the interior square footage while maintaining the residential character that sets Guesthouse Lake Tahoe apart from conventional luxury accommodations.

Where Hospitality Services Meet Invisible Technology

The integration of hospitality services directly influenced every architectural and design decision throughout the property. Spaces were planned specifically to accommodate a private chef, 24/7 house captain, private driver, and local guide without these services feeling intrusive to guests or disrupting the residential character that makes the experience feel genuinely homelike rather than institutional.

Technology integration remains invisible yet comprehensive, supporting the level of service expected by members while ensuring that sophisticated climate control, lighting, and entertainment systems work flawlessly without drawing attention to their presence. The design team understood that luxury today means having complex systems that respond intuitively to guest needs without requiring technical expertise to operate. The members-only model allowed this collaborative design team to make bolder choices than traditional hospitality projects typically permit, resulting in a level of customization and attention to detail that elevates the entire experience beyond what conventional vacation rentals offer. Without needing to appeal to the broadest possible market, the architects and designers could create something more specific and refined, incorporating technology solutions that support rather than dominate the living experience.

The Truckee Location Advantage and What Comes Next

Truckee’s location provides the perfect context for this architectural experiment, offering authentic mountain character that serves as a counterpoint to the more commercialized resort areas around Lake Tahoe. Downtown Truckee maintains its historic charm while embracing thoughtful development that respects the natural environment. Guesthouse Lake Tahoe sits just one mile from Truckee-Tahoe Airport, offering easy access to seven world-class ski resorts within a 45-minute drive.

The neighboring Titus House adds another layer to the Guesthouse Lake Tahoe experience, creating a compound approach that will soon include Guesthouse Pantry, an artisanal bakery and cafe opening to the public in late 2025. This multi-building strategy reflects a more nuanced understanding of how groups actually use vacation properties, offering additional privacy options and community connections that single-structure designs cannot provide. The success of this approach suggests that discerning travelers increasingly value authentic design experiences over generic luxury amenities, prioritizing spaces that feel genuinely curated rather than commercially optimized.

Guesthouse Lake Tahoe represents more than just another luxury rental property entering an increasingly crowded market. The project demonstrates how thoughtful architecture and collaborative interior design can create entirely new categories of hospitality experience, proving that residential hospitality can offer something that traditional hotels simply cannot deliver. By combining Ryan Group Architects’ spatial expertise with Halfdan Pedersen’s design leadership and the creative contributions of Olympia Pearl, Sally Lyons, and the Michael Hsu Office Of Architecture, this project has created a template that other mountain destinations will undoubtedly study and attempt to replicate, though the specific magic of this collaboration may prove difficult to duplicate.

Meet oncue, a couple of modular keyboards with wearable cuffs designed for people with Parkinson’s disease. Showcased during Milan Design Week 2025, designer Alessandra Galli has developed the device to aid the user’s motor challenges caused by tremors and bradykinesia. It includes two main parts: a compact keyboard split into two and a pair of wearable wrist cuffs. They use vibration and visual cues to help users while they type. The modular keyboard is in two halves to accommodate the position of the hands and arms. The keys are arranged in straight lines called an ortholinear layout, which can make it easier to move from one key to another with less finger strain.

 

When a user presses a key, the modular keyboard and wearable cuffs vibrate. This helps users stay in rhythm while typing, which can be difficult for people who experience tremors or slow movements, known as bradykinesia. If a finger stays on a key for too long, the vibration increases, a signal to lift the finger. The user can adjust the strength of the vibration depending on their preference. The modular keyboard with wearable cuffs also lights up when the user presses a key. Then, the installed AI system can also predict the next key that the user might press, letting it glow in advance so they know where to press. The system also learns and saves the typing habits of the user.

Customizable settings depending on the user’s needs

 

Designer Alessandra Galli hopes that with oncue, people with Parkinson’s disease are able to type fluidly and with less strain. The modular keyboards and wearable cuffs aim to reduce the shaking hands and slow hand movement of the users. They both vibrate to tell the users they’ve had their fingers on a key for too long. This also helps prevent ‘freezing,’ which is a symptom where movement suddenly stops. The users can wear the cuffs on different parts of the arm. Oncue also includes software that allows users to adjust vibration patterns and other settings.

 

Since Parkinson’s symptoms can change daily, users can customize the system to match what they need each day. They can use only the features they want, such as just the cuffs, just the lights, or both. Design-wise, the designer applies a bright orange palette for the case of the modular keyboards and a watch-like style for the wearable cuffs. For the keys, the gray color indicates the letters, while the dark blue is for the command buttons. The keys glow in yellow when they’re pressed, while they light up in green for the predictive text. So far, the designer has presented oncue during Milan Design Week 2025 and collaborated with the Parkinson’s Association in Treviso, Italy. As for the timeline of its rollout, there’s no news yet when the modular keyboards and wearable cuffs can be available.

Satechi Adds Apple ‘Find My’ to its Glasses Case so you Never Lose your Spectacles Again

Here’s why I think Satechi‘s latest product is genius. An object tracker or a tracking device is fundamentally just a tech accessory designed to be used WITH something. An AirTag is useless on its own, but attach it to your keys, your backpack, your wallet, or your car and suddenly it becomes useful. So, rather than attaching a separate device to your belongings to let you track them, Satechi just decided to make your daily objects trackable.

Released alongside other trackable products like a keychain, a luggage tag, and a wallet card, this spectacle case absolutely caught my eye because, as a person who wears spectacles, it just makes incredible sense. Imagine putting your glasses in a case and then misplacing the entire thing. Now you’ve not only misplaced your glasses, you’re also effectively blind, making finding those glasses even more difficult. However, if you’ve got your phone handy, you can just use Find My to track your spectacles case. Tech overkill? Probably… but I will always side with tech that solves actual problems rather than tech that’s looking for a problem to solve.

The case is called the FindAll Glasses Case, and it comes with a collapsible design made from vegan leather. It sits flat when not in use (making it great to store and perfect for shipping too), but when you need to stash your spectacles, the case opens up, becoming a prism-shaped container that holds your spectacles, sunglasses, or even XR/AR smart glasses (as long as they aren’t too thick). For the latter, Satechi officially states the case can fit the VITURE Pro XR, XREAL Air 2, and Ray-Ban | Meta Smart Glasses.

The kicker, however, is the fact that the case also houses a tracking chip relying on Apple’s Find My network, so you can effectively track where your glasses are. Even most smart glasses (like the Meta ones) don’t have tracking capabilities, so to put a tracking chip in your glasses case is just a genius move, if you ask me. Lose your glasses? They become visible in the Find My app on Apple devices, and if you’re in their vicinity, you can even trigger an alert sound, and the FindAll glasses case starts chiming loudly, alerting you of its presence. A ‘Left Behind’ notification system even triggers you if you ever leave the cases behind at a coffee shop or at work.

As mentioned before, the FindAll glasses case comes made from vegan leather, and is available in 3 colors – black, sand, and desert rose. Each case packs Bluetooth 5.4 LE for efficient pairing and tracking, and while the internal battery isn’t replaceable, it does support wireless recharging, allowing you to simply place your spectacles case on any wireless charging surface to juice the battery. The $49.99 price tag feels a little steep, but then again, it’s literally the only product in its category. The other alternative is to slip a Chipolo or AirTag into your specs case… but let’s face it. Aside from potentially damaging your spectacles, it just isn’t very elegant if you ask me.

The new all-pink Mercedes-Benz CLA concept by Gustaf Westman offers a playful vision for future summer adventures. Though currently just a concept, this imaginative project blends whimsical aesthetics with features tailored for those who love the idea of elevated outdoor living. Westman’s take on the CLA is not a vehicle you can buy or drive today, but it suggests exciting possibilities for how design can reshape our seasonal getaways.

The CLA concept arrives in a cheerful bubblegum pink, a hue Westman chose for its gentle, inviting quality. The color brings warmth and a sense of fun, highlighting the CLA’s familiar form, which Westman has softened and rendered chunkier for a nostalgic, friendly feeling. The overall effect is modern yet approachable, and immediately sparks ideas of summer picnics, laughter, and relaxation beneath open skies. It is easy to imagine this car parked on a grassy field, at the center of a memorable day outdoors.

Westman’s vision extends to a complete set of camping accessories, all designed to match the car’s playful character. The collection includes star-shaped plates, a chunky hot dog tray, and a roll-up backpack that doubles as a picnic blanket, all rendered in the same signature pink. These details reinforce the sense of a curated, cohesive outdoor experience and show how good design can elevate even the simplest summer rituals.

For glamping enthusiasts, the appeal of this concept is clear. Glamping is about savoring nature with comfort and a sense of style, and Westman’s CLA and its matching gear capture that spirit perfectly. While this car cannot be driven or camped in just yet, it points to a future where vehicles will support travel, but also the full experience of living well in nature.
